Santonio Holmes to Jets!

Mike T. does it again.

The Jets have worked out a deal with Pittsburgh.WR Santonio Holmes will come to the Jets in exchange for our 5th-round pick in this year's draft.

There is also a rumor circulating regarding Leon Washington, citing that he will also be going to the Steelers in addition to the 5th-round pick. It should be noted that this is FALSE, as Leon has not signed his tender yet. BUT, the two teams could have worked out a "future arrangement," in which Leon would go to Pittsburgh after signing his tender. So technically, he could still be part of the deal, only time will tell. Remember, with Willie Parker gone, Pitt is in need of a RB. While it is currently impossible with Leon's tender still unsigned, it could come to fruition in the future. We'll keep you posted.

It should be noted that Holmes recently violated the Substance-Abuse policy again, and will most likely only be eligible to play in 12 games this year. He has a history of marijuana use.

And the Jets suddenly are a team that is no longer looking wide/slot receiver in the first two rounds.

To be honest, this opens the door for trading up in round 1. Defense will be the target. Hopefully Graham or Odrick will be the target. Outside shot is guard/right tackle.

I was impressed with Sanchez

not only with his upside but his toughness and how quickly he adjusted to the pro team. Not only that, he actually has a decent deep ball. Jets haven’t had that ability in a QB in as long as I can remember. Even Favre didn’t really have the deep ball.

I’m certainly more than happy to give him another year at the helm. Especially with improved weapons for him.

by Bro Namath on Apr 12, 2010 1:53 AM EDT up reply actions

It all banks on his progression

he is still the unknown factor in this equation. you know what you’re getting with a Rex Ryan D. top 5 at least. you also know what you’re getting with that big line, and number 1 rushing game. the wideouts are proven. it all hinges on how big a step forward, or backward Sanchez makes. it’s always interesting to see how a QB progresses the sophomore year, which is to me, the most important year.

by wilddre22 on Apr 12, 2010 7:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I think

Sanchez shows serious potential as a team leader as well. He may not be a Manning, River or a Brady but he is still showing a lot of upside.

No he insinuated Greene and the Defense did it by themselves

The defense was great, but they lost just any many games as Sanchez.

by YankeesJets on Apr 12, 2010 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions

If you look at the playoffs though, lets take the Colts game, the game was lost when what’s his name at CB went out with an injury and then Greene went down with an injury.

Mauldin Played for Columbus a few years ago, He has six career games.

by Mark D on Apr 12, 2010 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions

What could Sanchez do with no running game?

And against a great team, Sanchez showed me a lot in that game. I still blame the coaching staff for getting conservative after halftime.

by YankeesJets on Apr 12, 2010 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly though, it was a team made to run first, and not let the other team score and those two injuries basically meant the game. I’m not saying there was anything Sanchez could have done that he didn’t, just that the team wasn’t dependent on him to win. He could lose the game by throwing a bunch of INTs, but it was the running game and defense that was supposed to win the game.

Mauldin Played for Columbus a few years ago, He has six career games.

by Mark D on Apr 12, 2010 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I dont care if he was Tom Brady

If the defense knows you have to throw it everytime, the odds of throwing a pick are real good. I think he was very good for being a rookie taking on a team like the Colts. I still think they should remain a running team first.

by YankeesJets on Apr 12, 2010 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I don’t think they had another running back worth dressing at that moment but I could be wrong.

I may be old but I... oh d*mn, I forgot what I was going to say.

by Cold_Old_Steelers_Fan on Apr 12, 2010 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

You’ve got me wrong,

First off, I just want a Vet Backup because Jet’s QBs have a history of going down hurt after great seasons.

Secondly, yes, Sanchez did good in the playoffs, but he did good as a Ball Control QB who didn’t make mistakes in a run first offense. Eli got the Giants a Super Bowl win, but he’s not the most impressive QB. I get the same feeling with Sanchez, unless your the Jags who want to not throw costly interceptions more then anything else, I’d much rather see us 50/50 Run to Pass ratio. The less running we do earlier in the game, the more we can run later in the game to bury it. Early TDs and getting ahead are going to be big for us, and the way to do that is via the pass. Running tends to work on field position and we’re usually happy early in the game just getting FGs waiting for the big run to break.

Not only that, but like I said Holmes is Clutch and Reminds me of Chrebet, now when we get into 3rd and 5+ Yards, we can have faith in Sanchez passing and Holmes getting himself open in those important situations.

Edwards is good, but he’s a home run threat, not an every down WR type guy and neither was Crotcherly. I like Holmes and how he plays and he’s a perfect grit it out and get those last few yards on 3rd down for the first.

Does that explain my position a lot better?

I Do Hate Clemens and Ainge but thats another story.

Mauldin Played for Columbus a few years ago, He has six career games.

by Mark D on Apr 12, 2010 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I am not a fan of those guys either

I think the reason they dont want a vet, is because they want no part of a QB controversy. I wouldnt mind a vet backup, but I prey we dont need him, lol.

by YankeesJets on Apr 12, 2010 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Unless the Jets collapse though, there shouldn’t be any reason for a QB controversy.

Mauldin Played for Columbus a few years ago, He has six career games.

by Mark D on Apr 12, 2010 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions

There were plenty of bad games last season and no one, except for the maniacs around here, was calling for Clemens to go in. Okay, what about Chris Simms? He’s a career backup, his former Health Condition means he’s happy just to be in the NFL, and he has great ties to the NY Area.

There are plenty of players around who are career backups that can get a game or two or three, but no one would want them to be the long term answer over Sanchez.

Agreed.

It will be interesting to see how Sanchez progresses or if he suffers a sophmore slump this year. He’s got all the weapons now to take charge of the team, now we just have to see if he can do it.

Of course, the same could be said for Henne if we can actually get him some reliable weapons of his own.

Great job once again Front Office

They never seem to amaze me in that Jets board room. You have to be willing to pull the trigger on some players with slight character flaws. No way we dont go all defense in the first two rounds now. I just would have liked to have D. Thomas on our team, but I will take a proven Super Bowl MVP over a rookie up and coming any day. Patriiots give us our spot back. Matter of fact we are coming to take it from you.

would he be 2nd or slot? What ya think?

by J3TSFANFORLYF3 on Apr 12, 2010 1:00 AM EDT reply actions

Hard to say, because he will begin his career as a Jet while serving a suspension, as Pace did.

Because of Holmes’ vertical speed, I think he’s better suited as WR2. Then move Cotchery to slot because of his consistency and excellent hands.

Just speculating here though.

LEON WASHINGTON RUMOR

There is a rumor that Leon was also included in this deal. Unfortunately, that isn’t necessarily true, because Leon hasn’t signed his tender yet.

BUT, they could have “verbally agreed,” and LW could still become a Steeler at a future time. We’ll see what shakes out, after moving Willie Parker, Leon would definitely fit in in Pitt.

Is the Holmes acquisition dependent on LW? Or are they separate transactions?

by Crackback on Apr 12, 2010 1:33 AM EDT up reply actions

We got Holmes, that’s not going to change.

But whether or not Leon was included in the deal, we don’t know yet.

TECHNICALLY, it would be a “separate transaction,” because it would be a verbal agreement for the future as LW hasn’t signed his tender yet.

Unofficially, it would be part of the same deal though if LW goes to Pitt.

The Steelers have Moore as a 3rd down back and Logan returning kicks. It would be interesting to see what role Leon would acquire. I still think of him as a 3rd down back/kr so if he goes to the Steelers then I see Moore and/or Logan being expendable.

And a another great pick-up for the Jets that I get to wake up to in complete shock.

I love this in so many ways. Holmes has indeed freed up one of our premium picks that might have gone to a WR. He is an amazing talent with unrivaled hands. Hes young. He will thankfully stop the Marshall talk on this team. Sanchez has another young talent to grow with should they sign him for the future of this team. I don’t need to say how huge it is that this guy knows what its like to come up big in the biggest game of the year. And BEST OF ALL? Not a soul saw this coming. From Shefter to the speculators on every team site on the net. We truly have no clue what these guys are thinking. Everything is a guess at this point.

seriously?

A top notch wide receiver in his prime (with some issues) for a 5th round draft choice and a 3rd down scat back/kr with a broken leg and the mistake belief he should be paid like an every down back isn’t a better trade for the Jets than the Steelers? Well, just send Bluntonio back and you can keep your pick and Leon.

Leon is a good player. He can make things happen. Holmes wins big games and makes the big plays when you need them. You guys would have got a steal for Leon and a 5th. As far as anyone really knows you got him just for a 5th.

Quit whining for crying out loud and enjoy this season. Barring a serious injury to Sanchez or Revis (and I think you might survive that) you should have a Super Bowl ring at the end.

by Cold_Old_Steelers_Fan on Apr 12, 2010 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

There’s a good chance Holmes ends up not playing at all next year, buddy. And then after that, he’s a free agent who’s also gonna be asking for way too much money. Is it too much to ask for a 7th rounder too to balance the risk out some more? A late pick next year even? Just SOMETHING to mitigate the chance of a complete and utter loss.

by Exystence on Apr 12, 2010 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Risk

Without the risk of him not playing Holmes would be worth a lot more. There isn’t a WR in this draft I would prefer to have over Holmes if there wasn’t the risk issue. On the field he is a proven #1 rounder SB MVP. Off the field he, apparently is something of a twit.

Should be a good motivation...

…for Braylon to catch the football, or lose his starting job. Also, Braylon, Cromartie, and Holmes need to stay out of trouble. No punching body guards, making bastard children, or getting high and throwing glasses at women. Overall, very excited about this deal! The Jets are gonna be stacked, draft is all defense now. Hope this doesn’t end up shipping Leon to Pitt!

Remember that Holmes is in the last year of his deal, so you’re only guaranteed to get 12 games and maybe even less if this thing about him beating up that woman has legs. So maybe Leon Washington and a 5th rounder for 12 games at best? I still would like the trade as a Jets fan, but I’d hardly call it a steal.

by JasonB on Apr 12, 2010 9:55 AM EDT reply actions

And if he doesn’t perform or has another indiscretion he won’t get paid next year. And if he does perform well, we’ll probably be winning games and he’ll likely want to come back. Don’t really see how we lose in this.

by Crackback on Apr 12, 2010 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, you could lose a 5th round pick and possibly a useful player in Washington while getting only 12 games(again could be less if the abuse charges stick) of Holmes in return.

If he comes back, that’s a separate transaction. Any team that wants can sign him as a free agent after this year. Jets could have done next year and given up nothing.

Again, I’m not saying I’d be upset if I were Jets fan by any means. It does improve your team next year no doubt. I’m just saying that it’s not a no brainer steal of a deal.

by JasonB on Apr 12, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Its absolutely a steal. We now have two bona fide number 1s whose contract will be up after the season. Likely one will have a good season while the other has mediocre numbers due to being in a run-heavy offense. It gives us leverage in negotiations and allows us to be ensured to re-sign really good talent relatively cheaply and move forward without substantially weakening. We’re unlikely to lose both unless both have tremendous seasons, which will likely mean we won a bunch of ball games and had a deep playoff run. There’s no downside to this.

by Crackback on Apr 12, 2010 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Peter King has said that Leon is not involved at all. We also won our first three games last year with a receiving core of Cotchery and Stuckey, so I think we can manage with Edwards and Cotchery until Holmes comes in. 12 games of Holmes is an absolute steal for a 5th round selection. Those assault chargers are never going to stick, the details are completely out of whack. I can’t see how any Jets fan would not be absolutely delighted with this.

a lil overdramatic, don't ya think?

A guy with overactive sperm, another who has the audacity to fight with LeBron’s friends, and a guy who likes the bong too much (all abuse cases have either been dropped or more likely to be dropped); I think the “selling of the soul” is a bit much.

by Togaman7 on Apr 12, 2010 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Theres no soul selling here...

Every team in the league has questionable character guys on their roster. Troy, by your account that would make 80% of the league “soulless”? I don’t think so. The soul of a team lies with what makes that team great and dosn’t get sullied by the willingness to take on players with questionable pasts. Are some players worse then others and more likely to cause distractions? Yes. IMO the jets have steered clear of thoes players who might have proven to be too much to handle despite being readily available. Btw, the resolve and soul of this team was proven when Edwards stepped forward and assumed a leadership role for the Jets during some hard times.

Oh yeah

I of course love the deal, but aside from money is concerned for next year, this year we have already added a few more big names and talented guys with potential personalities. My question is could this be a little too much star power?

LT, Cromartie, Holmes already on the team

Possibly we could sign:
Jason Taylor in the next week, we know they want him.
Darren Sharper a long shot, but he could wait until July and they may have him on the radar.

You gotta add guys like Bart Scott, and names who are good guys but people who get media attention. Revis, Braylon, Kris Jenkins. Its gonna be an interesting locker room.
