What is Leon thinking??

We are exactly five days away from the deadline for restricted free agents to sign their tender. Yet for some reason Leon Washington has still not signed. The only reason for this, is the irrational advice he is receiving from his agent, Alvin Keels. He must be telling Leon to wait until this week and they will hold a workout for teams that are interested. The Jets clearly look like the good guys in this situation, making Leon look selfish for thinking he can get a good contract after recovering from a major leg injury. So with all that said what teams would be interested in signing LW and surrendering a 2nd round pick??

Cleveland Browns- Jamal Lewis retired leaving Jerome Harrison and Chris Jennings as the only RB’s on the roster, . Mangini is obviously very familiar with Leon and besides Josh Cribbs, the Browns have no other dynamic playmakers. Leon would breathe life into a stagnant offense and he would give opposing defenses someone to fear whenever he is on the field. Cleveland, however has only one 2nd round choice and they have more pressing needs than RB, such as QB and WR. So I cannot see them parting ways with their 2nd round selection.

Oakland Raiders- Al Davis loves speed and Leon definitely brings that to the table. There is an argument that Darren McFadden and LW bring the same skill sets to the offense. But when it comes to the Raiders, you put conventional thinking to rest. LW would also be an upgrade in the return games, whether it be returning kick offs or punts. Wouldn’t it be ironic if Leon signed with the team that injured his leg.

San Francisco 49ers- There were reports when the FA period began that the niners were interested in signing Leon. They have one of the best RB’s in the league, in Frank Gore. He is more of a bruising back, not really much of a speed threat. So I could see the niners having interest in Leon for the return game and to also be their scat back. Someone who could come in and provide a change of pace and be a deadly weapon in the passing game.

New England Patriots-We are all very familiar with the pats. I could see them signing Leon just out of spit to the Jets. Lets see , the Patriots have Fred Taylor, Benjarvis Green-Ellis, Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, and Laurence Maroney on the roster. Why would they possibly need LW? With the exception of Green-Ellis, the other 4 RB’s seem to get hurt every year. Maybe they are looking at some stability in the running game, something they have not had in years. I cannot see Belicheck giving up one of his 3 2nd round picks to the Jets.

St. Louis Rams- The Rams are also set at RB like the 49ers. They have one of the best RB’s in the league, in Steven Jackson. I could see them being interested in Leon as a 3rd down , change of pace back. Worth a 2nd round pick? I doubt it, plus the Rams have far too many issues to be giving up draft picks.

I am sure there are teams who would have a need for Leon whom many of you will bring up. My take is the Jets are set to move on from Leon. This became evident with the hot pursuit and signing of Tomlinson. They are similar RB’s who serve the same purpose. The Jets would be pleased if he signed somewhere else. Come Thursday, I think Leon will have not received any other offers and will come back to the Jets with his tail between his legs and sign his tender. With that being said this will be his last year as a Jet. Your thoughts??
