Thomas Jones to KC

Farewell, Sir Thomas.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports (via Twitter) Jones has signed a Two-year deal worth $5 Million.

Adam_Schefter

Filed to ESPN: Thomas Jones signs in Kansas City: two years, $5 million. Chiefs have their running back. No need for Willie Parker to visit.

Adam_Schefter

Thomas Jones deal is for $3 million this year, $2 million next year and another $500,000 in incentives

Had a great career here, was as consistent as they come. We will surely miss his ball security, excellent vision and ability to hit holes -- but it's time to move on.

As long as he's not in a Blue/Red/White uniform, we're happy. Although it is interesting he will be with a lot of ex-Pats : Vrabel, Cassel, Romeo Crennel, and  Weis to name a few.

well that as they say is that

if it is confirmed. He was a good back for us, wish him well. glad we won’t see him next year. Hope he has a couple of monster games against the Chargers lol.

by Togaman7 on Mar 9, 2010 5:07 PM EST reply actions

Why?

He really shouldn’t be taking carries from Jamaal Charles. I guess it makes sense if he is only going to get 8-10 touches a game, but why would he go to KC to get 8-10 touches a game? You would think he could get more reps somewhere else, and it’s not like going to KC gives him a chance to win anything.

Sorry. I love Charles,

and I think with Pioli you guys are improving, but I don’t think its a spot where a guy would go to end his career, especially when there is a better RB then him there.

Eh,

I don’t know. I’m very skeptical as to what Jones can do without our monster offensive line. Charles made almost all of his big plays on lighting speed and pure elusiveness, Jones made almost all of his place following gaping holes by our line.

I love Jones,

and he did a great job fitting into our running game, using great vision and never fumbling, which was a good combination with our big, physical, awesome line. I just don’t know that he is capable of making anything happen by himself. I hope he does well, I’m just skeptical.

That's true, I totally agree

I guess what I meant by tandem was Jamaal Charles beasting on people and then TJ spelling him every once in a while to give opposing defenses a breather :P

And to answer your comment further up, it was TOTALLY about the money, that much is obvious now. I’m not too sad about it though, I’ve always had a somewhat positive view of the Chiefs for no particular reason (I like their helmet logos idk lol), so I’m glad he landed there instead of some squad I totally hated.

by Exystence on Mar 9, 2010 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

That’s the thing, With Jamaal Charles already on the roster, they won’t need him to make big plays. He should help them in short yardage situations.

by random122 on Mar 9, 2010 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

You said it right there: great vision

He’s the perfect compliment to Charles, in our scheme.

With the new regime, came a transition to a zone blocking scheme, which attempts to create more running lanes (at least, how I sees it). As you saw, this suits Charles speed a great deal, is he can just choose his lane and fly through the hole. His runs aren’t designed to shoot a specific gap where a big, physical, awesome line is better suited.

Jones and his vision is perfect for this scheme. He won’t need to break as many tackles, hsi vision allowing him to choose the path of least resistance. The playcalling can remain the same for both, and TJ can duck his way through the trash on short yardage downs.

Maybe I’m just living in a fantasy land, but that’s how it’s playin out in my head.

We moved to a zone blocking scheme, and that seemed to suit him quite well, we do have probably the best line in the NFL, but I think he will do a decent enough job for you this year. He will break off a couple of 50-60 yard ones that make you think back to his younger days. Good mentor, good leader, hard worker, the best role model you could look for to be perfectly honest. You guys picked up a nice back for the price.

+1 fair points. I think Jamaal Charles is scary good. I picked him up on the waiver wire right when LJ got cut and this guy got me into the money in my points league in the last 3 weeks. I actually had so much confidence that I started him over MJD for the last 3 weeks of the year. Good luck, kick some Charger ass.

It’s pretty obvious he wasn’t gonna get more than that from us. It sucks, but what can you do about it. If it wasn’t that, then he probably wanted a multi-year deal which I’m almost positive would never have come from us. A distant third possibility is that it might have just been a matter of principle not to re-sign with us for less money after we decided he wasn’t worth the roster bonus despite the career year. :(

by Exystence on Mar 9, 2010 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

Good point. I’d chalk it all up to your third possibility (pride).

by random122 on Mar 9, 2010 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

I really think this is just pride talking for Jones, realised on the open market, he wasn’t going to get much, but as principle wouldn’t re-sign for us. I have a feeling he will come to regret that decision. However best of luck to the guy, always liked him so best of luck.

I agree Dave,

seems weird he would go to a rebuilding Chiefs team to play a backup type role. I could understand if he went to a superbowl contender as a backup, but the Chiefs? And it isn’t like they gave him that much money, so it seems strange.

our OL will be much better next season

I have no doubts of that. I wonder though whether TJ will get more carries than people might think. I suspect we may create a number of plays with both him and Jamaal in the backfield and they could end up with a closer split in carries. They will both be very productive in my view – somehow.

by colinyoung on Mar 9, 2010 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

Good call Colin,

Lynch had a down season last year but is a solid pass catcher and he runs like an absolute animal. He is young and probably could be had from Buffalo because he was outplayed by Fred Jackson. He was pretty good in his first 2 years behind a bad line in Buffalo. I would not be opposed to Lynch and Greene bruising people. He also is young, doesn’t turn 24 until April.

I saw a blurb on him on espn which reminded me of his situation. He’s deff a bad character guy. He’s HUGE trouble. Conceled weapons and all that. Typical Jets

This was the year the Jest were supposed to load up for a run to the big game. They surprised everyone by getting to the AFC Championship, so why not try and take that run into next season with the team intact and push even harder with some additions? But here they are, the strength of their game is the run and they lose Jones, probably Washington too, and what is left? Greene is good, but can he hold up injury free for 16 games? And his hands- he has alot of Wendell Tyler in him- butterfingers. So you give up two knows for an unknown and your strength becomes a question. This is typical Jets though, i am not shocked because i expected they to throw away the success with bad moves.

Yawn.

Put your flame suit on, because the same old Jets shit won’t fly here. Funny how a scat back that hasn’t played a game since he snapped his leg through his skin isn’t considered an unknown.

Yawn back

Put a lid on it? You don’t rid yourself of a strength and think it will be fine. You are missing the point. How good will Sanchez be without a running game? Mark my words- and I hope I am wrong- this is going to hurt.

by unclelido1 on Mar 9, 2010 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

Why pay a guy whose shot $6 mil when the plan is to have the other guy get all the carries?

by Crackback on Mar 9, 2010 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

Best year in his career – 1400 yards and 14 TDs and that is shot? Shot? If Greene has that kind of year next season- without fumbling like he is prone to doing- then i will kiss your rings!

by unclelido1 on Mar 9, 2010 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

Pucker up. Greene had some growing pains but you didnt see him fumble in crunch time. He was the guy strapping the team on his back in the post-season, not TJ. TJ was decent, but not good. When was the last time you saw him break a tackle? Any decent back would’ve run for chunks behind our o-line last year.

by Crackback on Mar 9, 2010 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

Dude, I hope you are right. But you know TJ was hurt going into the playoffs- everyone knew it, thats why Greene got the carries. Greene is good- a great Hawkeye RB- but we need someone else “in the event” Leon is gone and we dont get a credible runner to compliment him. Sanchez needs the running game badly. But we shall see, all the talking we are doing isn’t doing a damn thing- we are all just spectators.

by unclelido1 on Mar 9, 2010 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

Sanchez is developing, but he’s shown he can play. He looked really good in the post-season. And the draft is very deep at RB this year. Losing Leon might be a blessing bc after snapping his leg, its hard to say he’ll be the same.

by Crackback on Mar 9, 2010 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

And one more thing- 2 years, 5 million? They couldnt afford that in an uncapped year? This is going to hurt, the Jets made a bad business decision.

by unclelido1 on Mar 9, 2010 8:28 PM EST up reply actions

The Jets offer was probably similar, but it was a case of principle, when you don’t get the bonus, you feel undervalued, this wasn’t about 2 years at $5 million, this was about 1 year at $5.8 million. We didn’t want to pay that, and there is a good argument for that being the right decision. Even if we offered two years at $5 million, he probably wouldn’t of accepted that deal because of the whole perceived ‘slap in the face’ with the denial of the bonus.

Let’s see what Mike T does the rest of the off-season before we cast off into same old Jets territory. He has renewed by faith in hosting Pool that’s for sure.

OK, I agree with you that it was a matter of principle for Jones. And if he wanted to win he would have swallowed his pride to chase a ring. But typically, they go for the money first, even though it is more then they can spend in a lifetime (unless you are Cormartie and have 7 more kids in 6 more states). I know the D will be #1 again if they add Pool and Jenkins returns to form. But we still need O- it showed vs the Colts. We need to score to win.

by unclelido1 on Mar 9, 2010 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

We do need some offence for sure, but I think we can get that, it’s still very early in the free agency period, and there are some attractive options in the draft as well. If we still look weak come opening day, then we can worry, but right now we are thin at the back, but I’m pretty confident that Mike T will rectify that with some signings and or draft selections.

If the rookie back-up’s name is Gerhart or Ryan Matthews or Anthony Dixon or Jonathan Dwyer or Joaiq Bell or LaGarat Blount… Im good with that.

Running back isn’t quarterback, the lifespan of a running back in the NFL is very short. It isn’t anything unusual to see a rookie running back contribute right from the start.

Jax fans as a whole must be classy. Because like you said the guys on here were awesome,

I actually went to that game, and the hotel I was staying at had a bunch of Jax fans. They also, were extremely classy and great guys. We had to wait for the shuttle back to the hotel after the game, and they were getting empty beer cans and cups thrown at them by cars, all the like. And they just smiled/shrugged it off and said they were going to the bars into the city to celebrate.

I don’t know why you guys think the Jets might have offered a similar amount to the amount the Chiefs gave Jones. It looks to me like the Jets didn’t want him back at any price. I guess they believe that old adage about how it’s better to get rid of a guy one year too early than one year too late. Obviously the Jets feel that Jones is at the end of his career, and that pretty much anybody can look good behind that offensive line of theirs.

Dumped Edgar Renteria and adopted Buster Posey. Biggest upgrade since George Jefferson moved up to a deluxe apartment on the east side!

The Jets also wanted Jones to be #3, whereas I believe in KC he will be #2.

If our O-line continues playing well, I think we’ll be fine even with Leon – although I think he’ll be back. Opponents were stacking the box last year and we still ended up as the best running team. I certainly hope we’ll be more balanced in 2010, which should make it even easier for us to ground and pound.

Arrowhead Pride Guys

If you’re still around, can you all explain what his role is going to be in KC?

Are him and Charles going to be directly splitting carries? Or will Charles be the workhorse and Jones for Short Yardage/goal line situations.

GGN Staff Writer
www.ganggreennation.com

by Matt Birch on Mar 9, 2010 10:55 PM EST reply actions

The way I see it

Charles gets most of the work between the 20s, with TJ spelling, maybe coming in for some 3rd down situations. Maybe they split carries in the redzone, with TJ getting most of the goal line carries…. maybe a 70/30 split, depending on the situation?

I dunno… That’s how I’d do it.

Yep, that’s exactly how I would figure it to go also. That would be the logical and effective way to do it.

TJ is still excellent at hitting holes, he just can’t break the big one. That would work well and would be a great tandem.

Thanks for the response, appreciate it.

yeah

Arrow might be right. That’s probably the conventional thing to do. However, I think Haley is pretty aggressive as well as creative. And, I think that Weis will be creative also. So, I suspect there might be a more even split with some 2 back formations where either can run or catch passes. I hope so anyway. But, of course, Jamaal is the home run threat so you’ve got to get him the ball.

a more even split allows us to use up TJ for 2 years and preserve JC for when the Chiefs are more in contention. Although, frankly, I think we’ll be contending in our division this year.

Just like we did when we needed that yard to win the game against San Diego….just took that ball and rammed it home…..

He’s been a little soft lately, as you saw him daintily dancing at the line on some key downs in the playoffs. But I honestly think that your defense has an attitude that’ll rub off on ANYbody, even him.

Do I think he’ll return to his 2007 form? Eh… But I do think your defense his improved with him on the field, long as he ups the intensity and gets physical vs the run.

Yer we just fronted him some money to pay for the maternity issues etc, that’s a bit of a problem, but would rather that than say some arrests for gun possession or something like that.

Most definitely saw him back out a few challenges, and when he was introduced he held his hands up, he said he should of made the tackle on Greene, and he needs to improve his tackling, so at least he admits to these things.

Lets hope the D rubs off on him, very excited at the prospect of him and Revis.

Those guys have been great, they always offer advice to me personally on how to improve etc, and they still stop in every now and again since we got talking earlier this season when they visited us for a game.

I'll have to do that.

My anecdote for Jax is that I lived there from about mid 1991 to 1993 or so. So, I lived there during the expansion selection process and it was pretty exciting that Jax got one of those teams as it was a little bit unexpected. Of course, I moved before they were up and running so I never saw a game there. Well, I saw the FL-GA game in the old stadium once – fun! So I have a bit of emotional connection with them but not enough that I follow them closely.

I do hope they will support the team and keep it there rather than lose it to frickin LA. It would be more hilarious for me to see the Chargers move up the road.

Your right there, those guys who are the true supporters put everything they have into supporting the team. I hope they can find a way to get more bums in deats, if they take Tebow, I think that puts more people in temporarily, but nothing improves attendance then winning.

They should support it better

because that area is a huge college football crazy place. But, I guess that can also be a negative. The Gators and Seminoles are always pretty good or one or the other and maybe draws people away. But, KC area is very similar and it works to help the pro game I think. KC is the heart of the old Big 8 and many people that go to all of those schools end up in KC and it makes for great rivalry fun.

yea it would be more at times but shake is a nazi about closing them before they go over 2000 (does what he can to anyway).

yea however the overall average is probably brought down some if you go off productive comments in posts in general. We also average more comments per post than AP in part because we don’t get as many out as fast as they do. I think they average 10 posts a day or something like that. we are around 5 or so but many comments on each.

No if everything goes well and I get a BPA list from everyone we will do 2 rounds a weekend.

I think it should only take like 2 or 3 hours but will probably take more with trades. As long as you get a BPA in incase if you can’t stay at the end of the day it will be ok. I am planning on starting at 1ET and your first pick will probably be more around 2ET.

An issue for GGN

I think, and I really don’t know, just me taking an educated guess, is that we are in NY, with all this media, they have the SNY jetsblog, and a million other Jets blogs. It’s the same with any sport. I jumped around through dozens of jets centered blogs before I came across this one, which I only found through Amazinavenue, which I only found through a frequent commented on MLBTR. SBN generally has good stuff, this is easily the best Jets blog I have found. There just may not be as much action in the comments section because of the other thousand Jets blogs. You have to sift through the weak to find the good, but even since I have been here, probably since the beginning of the season or so, there have been a lot of new names popping up in the comments section, which is always good.

Then you run across the problem of having a blog become to successful, and get flooded with stupid fairweather fan, silly comments, which is what happened at MLBTR, imo. I love it here though, I have found a number of guys who I love to discuss football with here.

good point

there are a lot of blogs for other teams as well but it sounds like it is nothing like for the New York teams. That though is probably just a part of it though.

Co-Leader of yearly 7 round live mock draft at MtD

by TheAngelsColts on Mar 10, 2010 1:01 AM EST up reply actions

that's probably true - NY saturation coverage

But, for us AP has become sort of a big central clearing house. A lot of the content from the KC paper (not much) and other blogs and national things end up linked into AP and that’s where the discussions occur. I used to look all over the place but have gradually stopped doing so because AP is regularly on top of everything as quick or quicker and collects everything for me anyway.

Hey

so, what’s the deal with stadiums. Are you and Giants going to continue to share the new stadium in Meadowlands or is there still a plan for a West Manhattan stadium also?

Share

The New Meadowlands is the venue of the future. Haven’t heard anything about Manhattan in awhile, and especially since it was built, so believe that’s done with.

The stadium funds were split down the middle 50/50 from both teams, so we will actually “share” this time and not be lil brother anymore.

The stadium also has color-changing properties — as it’s metallic exterior can change from bluish tint to greenish when needed. Looks insane.

It’s looking like we’ll be hosting the 2014 Super Bowl as well.

Love this. I think it a joke how people complain it has to be somewhere warm. So football is a cold weather sport, we play in the winter, and we take the advantage away from a cold weather team so the fans can be more comfortable? If they don’t want to be cold, let them stay home. The superbowl will sell out and make money no matter what. We talk about how it is a cold weather sport, the playoffs are cold, and then we give any team that plays in a dome or in warm weather the advantage in the superbowl, the most important game, after a whole season of cold weather football, because it is better for the tourists? Damn right we should get a superbowl.

And not that Miami or a warm place/dome should never host

but not every year. Mix it up. If a team like the Colts plays a team like the Giants in any dome, they have an advantage, how is it fair that dome/warm temperature teams have the super bowl advantage every year?

I’m afraid we are going to have to cut off if that is the case lol

Little nervous about this, he should be signed up by now, Mike T dragging his feet this year.

Was about to get stuck into some talking over at your place on the Mount Cody thread after we had been discussing him today, unfortunately, their is a one day waiting period, so will have to save it for tomorrow.

Was going to say that Rex Ryan was at the Alabama pro day today, and we are looking to get younger on the defensive line, so we could be looking at Cody with the 29th selection.
