Taylor Mays Twitter

Hi, first post on GGN and SBN in general, mostly been just reading your guys' posts for the past couple of months.

Anyway, I found Taylor Mays' twitter page (not sure if it really is his though, but i've searched around and it doesn't seem like there's another:

http://twitter.com/RealTaylorMays

Something interesting I found was that he's been asking a lot of Jets players to follow him and he's been talking with them, then he was talking with Kerry Rhodes and Rhodes said:

"@RealTaylorMays lol ill get ur twitter following up. Good luck with the draft boy and ball out. Its ur turn."

Got me thinking a bit, and then Mays replied:

"@kerryrhodes thnks bruuh for helpin me out, all i want is your follow though man you one of my idols and im not lookin to take your place..."

What do you guys think? Does this mean the Jets have been in contact with Mays and might be looking to draft him? Just something I found interesting...

Nice find

…and welcome! Any gratuitous rumor-mongering is OK with us here at GGN.

...you're a jet all the way.

Hard to say.

I would say the Jets probably have made contact with him, but that is just doing their due diligence, they probably have been in contact with dozens of different potential draft picks. And njd is right, the other day I saw ochocinco twittering with somebody like Nick Barnett. Good find though, and welcome. I find it interesting, whether it means something or not.

Welcome to GGN and SBN as a whole.

That’s pretty interesting, if it becomes verified then I think there may be something to it, but I have heard a few Jets fans really want us to pursue him, so I wouldn’t be surprised if one of them set up a twitter and tried to suggest that is where we are going. Those seem like pretty big hints, and if that is the case, I’m thinking Mike T wouldn’t want someone giving away hints like that if he had said that we were going to do everything to get him.

Guys just found this blog and SB Nation. I’m a big contributor to Nets Daily and we just moved onto this platform…..

I have been saying for months that Taylor Mays would be a Jet. The guy is like 6’3’’ and 230 and is a hard hitter. He is the perfect fit for Rex’s defense. He could be like an Ed Reed type player on this defense. Especially now that we have dealt Rhodes, we need to get a safety.

If you are a college defensive player, are there many teams other than the Jets you would like to end up on? Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to want to play in NYC, for Rex, and with one of the most exciting young teams.

With the best cover corner in Revis, a potential stud in Cromartie – this team needs a hard hitting safety to come on blitzes, act as last line of defense, punish receivers going over the middle, etc. Only problem is he killed it in the 40 – which is going to make him move higher on draft boards. But I believe Rex/Tanny are going to work a trade to get him in the 1st round – another reason why getting that 4th round pick for Rhodes was important.

Hi Ryan, welcome to SB Nation and GGN

Won’t say much as I’m really not a fan of Taylor May’s game, like everyone knows on here, and they don’t need me boring them with another explanation as to why, but I wouldn’t put it past Mike to make some kind of move. Which is why I’m hoping that Oakland take him at 8, and make it nearly impossible, that’s just me though.

Also a note to all, check out the twitter today, he is making the rounds to any and every celebrity, trying to get them to follow him, I have a feeling this is not the real deal Taylor Mays.

Hey David. Thanks for the welcome.

My thought process is just that we really need to cement the safety position/secondary and I think with where we are picking and the schemes that we run; Mays is our best bet.

by Ryan243 on Mar 9, 2010 12:45 PM EST reply actions

If we take him then will trust our scouts and management and give him a clean slate, and support him like I would any other player. However having two good corners on the outside, I have a feeling teams are going to target the middle of the field, and his well documented problems in coverage, and the angles he takes to the ball carrier make me a little nervous. I also don’t like spending a first on a position we just opened up with a trade. Obviously just my personal opinion though, a few people on here like Taylor. Apart from Gholston, the scouts/GM really haven’t given us a reason to not trust their evaluation of talent though, so if we do take him, will give him a chance.

disagree

mays has i think 3 INTs in his last 2 years at USC. He lacks ball skills and range. Hes a thumper, and an athletic freak, but he can’t find the football.

A lot of people think Rex just like guys who hit hard at saftey, but thats not the case. Hard-hitting is nice, but if youre always out of position and never near the ball, it doesnt matter one way or another.

by Ryan Alfieri on Mar 9, 2010 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

Mays might make a good SS rather than FS. If thats the case, and Leonard can play FS, i’d be more open to taking him.

But I still prefer going with Hughes with our first pick if he’s available.

by Crackback on Mar 9, 2010 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

He lacks ball skills and range.

You are half right. His ball skills are lacking, but the range is there. His closing speed is incredible.

Lol,

speaking of good highlight packages, I always liked this one. the main thing I liked about Mays, watching lots of USC, is that while sometimes he knocks somebody out, sometimes he may miss,, and his ball skills are lacking, he always seems to be around the ball. Guy flys to the ball, he is always there.

That is a cracking video, they do say you can make anyone look good when you omit bad players lol

I’m a strong advocate of physical smash people up football, so in that regard I like Taylor, I’m just not sure whether he could learn to cover, and it is definitely a risk………sometimes you have to take risks. I’m trying to be more open to the guy. Just going to carry on watching highlight packages lol sooner or later it will work.

Something that means nothing, but is encouraging nonetheless, is that the USC defensive players of late have seemed to have transitioned their college success to the NFL.

nrmax88, your not jokin when you say he flies to the ball.

Shamefully, he hits harder than Kerri Rhodes.

If we think it is worth grooming him for the future, then that is fair enough. However I wouldn’t be confident with him starting in 2010, I want to win it all in 2010 and Mays will be dodgy his first year wherever he lands.

I think such a big part of any draft prospects success

is landing in the right situation, and if he ends up in Oakland, he may bust, but I think here, he can, and will thrive. For what its worth, he played with a balky knee this year, which I honestly wasn’t aware of until later in the season. I watch a lot of USC, but while I like them I wouldn’t say I’m a fan of them per se, so this slipped by me for most of the year. Maybe explains why he wasn’t as good as he was in his junior year. At the end of 2008 season, people were raving about him as he thrived in USC’s amazing defense, that included Cushing, Maualuga, Matthews, Griffen, Fili Moala, Kaluka Maivia, Kevin Ellison, etc. He stayed in school to get his degree, but like Leinart, was probably hurt by that decision.

I’m still not sold on him in this situation though, I’m not 100% against it, and don’t get me wrong, I would love to see him lay out a Dolphin over the middle, but I would have to see some serious coverage improvement before I trusted him. I say his Bust/Star ratio is about 50-50 right now, If he is there at 29…then I would live with that without a doubt, but it’s the fact that some people are saying we should move up to get him into the high teens, that’s where I have my problem. We should use this draft to the max, not trade away to get one player.

I agree, I wouldn't trade up for Mays.

If we finished with the a pick from 10-15 like we thought we might week 14, it would be different, but I wouldn’t give up picks in later rounds/drafts to move up for anybody besides Eric Berry.

Another note on Mays...

he actually wraps up fairly well, you don’t see it much in his highlights because usually wrap up tackles don’t make the highlight reel, but watching him run the 40, and watching him hit people and just crush them with his shoulder, this dude must be crazy strong. His chest looked enormous during the combine, and some of the ways guys went down that he hit were hard to believe, it was like he put his shoulder into them and knocked all the air out of their body’s. He has to work at playing the ball more instead of just looking to lay the wood, but he had side line to side line range, he just has to use it better. Find the ball a half second sooner and he can generate a lot more interceptions because of his closing speed.

"Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring; besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic."

by nrmax88 on Mar 9, 2010 7:26 PM EST up reply actions

Mays is basically a linebacker playing at safety

…except he has sub-4.3 speed. Imagine how many QBs he’d absolutely maul if we used him like James Ihedigbo at the end of the year. Looking at the highlight reels of his play has gotta make you believe that Rex Ryan would absolutely ADORE having a guy like Mays in the defensive backfield. The guy is the very definition of the KILLLLLLLLLLLL mentality.

by Exystence on Mar 9, 2010 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

I was thinking that,

in his rookie year he can have an Ihedigbo type impact, if nothing else because of his speed. He has raw parts of his game, without a doubt, but to me, a physical specimen that flies to the ball like him would fit in here because he is being coached by the best. He may not always make the right decision at the point of impact, but he is almost always at the point of impact, I’ll take a guy that is always near the ball and let Rex coach him up. I agree, but there are some who fairly question his polish, I just think he could thrive here. I have been watching him for 4 years and have probably grown partial towards him, I admit that.

"Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring; besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic."

by nrmax88 on Mar 9, 2010 10:59 PM EST up reply actions

I was thinking he might be better suited to play SS. He can basically kill what ever enters the box, without having to worry about covering the deep third/half. Plus this will let him fly to the run. He could be like a hybrid LB/SS. Which works for us bc we climb on the QB pretty quick and have excellent cover corners.

But I agree with you and Exystence. He would be a monster in the blitz game.

by Crackback on Mar 9, 2010 11:06 PM EST up reply actions

In that first video,

just check out 0:55 and 1:15. First one just shows his raw strength, second one shows his range getting over to the sideline. That was Nyan Boateng, of Cal that got abused a couple of times, poor guy. Not a small man, listed at 6’2, 215, and he is from Brooklyn, Lincoln HS boy so you know he (Boateng) isn’t a softy.

"Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring; besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic."
- CRASH DAVIS

by nrmax88 on Mar 9, 2010 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

No doubt he can hit and he can fly. But he has a reputation of taking poor angles and being out of place. I was thinking that by switching to SS you limit his weaknesses and accentuate his strengths. So let him play down hill and murder crossing routes and running backs, and keep him away from back-peddaling and reading and reacting (where angles are important).

by Crackback on Mar 9, 2010 11:35 PM EST up reply actions

I wasn't really arguing your point,

more just thinking out loud in a reply to your post. Another random piece of unimportant information, though it interested me, Troy Polamalu only had 6 picks in his 3 year career at USC, and was also known as a lay the wood guy. I would have thought Troy would have been a ballhawk always.

"Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring; besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic."
- CRASH DAVIS

by nrmax88 on Mar 9, 2010 11:42 PM EST up reply actions

I wasnt trying to argue at all, basically thinking and typing too. Troy is actually what made me think of him playing SS. I was suprised at how fast Troy was actually. I think he ran a 4.3 at the combine. So the parallels are there.

by Crackback on Mar 9, 2010 11:50 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t want the Jets to be interested but I think they are. 5 INTs at USC in his 4 year career with 51 games total. 1 INT every 10 games in college and they don’t come any easier in the pros. I would rather have a ball hawk playing in Rex’s defense.

by TheSanchize6 on Mar 9, 2010 3:49 PM EST reply actions

Part of that is

his area wasn’t thrown at all that much, unless he got beat in man coverage, but playing in a zone back there teams were weary because of how many guys he just leveled at the point of impact. There were times he made breaks on a play and questionably went for a knockout blow instead of the ball, but his acceleration and straight line speed gives him great range. I think he can definitely be coached up. I happen to like Mays a lot, but I have faith in whoever Mike T and Rex select.

Think of it this way though..You already can’t throw on Revis’ side of the field. If Cromartie returns to 2007 form – not sure you can throw on that side of the field either. Leonhard is a hawk and is all over the field. If you add a guy of Mays speed and strength it could take away the middle of the field underneath routes as few receivers not named Welker enjoy taking these type of hits.
