Wallace Wright to Panthers
According to Manish Mehta, Wallace has signed with Carolina.
#Jets lose their best special teamer -- Wallace Wright -- who signed with the Panthers today. #nfl
I personally liked Wallace a lot. He was excellent on special teams.
A lot of guys have also been saying he's been making improvements as a WR also (which is more than I can say for Clowney).
We're going to have to bring in some guys on defense who will not only give us depth, but the versatility to fill the voids on Westhoff's ST Unit. The reason being, rumors are that the Cheats met with LB Murrell today also.

Ah man. Wallace was a valuable guy. Do we get any compensation? Cant remeber if he was an RFA or not.
He was an RFA, but he wasn’t tendered. So I believe we don’t get anything in return. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong though.

Because he was undrafted we couldn’t, it’s either first and third, first, second, drafted round, or none.
Personally would of just liked to have signed him straight back up.

Oh yeah, me too. But if we have to let a guy like that go i’d to get something back. This is a pretty big loss. Guy was the man on special teams.
We don't know what happened.
Maybe Carolina gave him a chance to try to win a spot as the 3rd receiver, something we couldn’t do, and a career choice he had to make.

Ha I don’t blame you. Mike must have some plans, the most upset man right now much be Mike Westhoff…..first he trades Trusnik who was a good guy to have on special teams and now they let Wright go to Carolina.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him develop into a half decent receiver as well.

Not a big fan of this move at all, making more improvements than Clowney and was our best special teams player. I wonder if we at least tried to keep him.

Wallace Wright was a very underrated player imo. Why let your best special teamer go away for nothing in return. Especially if he was making improvements at WR.
How was he making improvements at WR?
Didn’t he only have like 2 catches in 09’?
Panther fan here… just curious because we desperately need Special Teams help and a WR help.

Wait a sec…. If he was an RFA, but he couldnt be tendered for a pick, does that mean we had right of refusal? If thats the case im curious what the offer was.
I don’t think so, I think for that to work, you have to put that tender on him….like the Rams did with OJ. We just gave him nothing, so when the new league year started he went from being a RFA to a UFA. So when he signed with the Panthers he was no longer a RFA. At least that is how I understand it. So I’m not 100% sure on this, but letting him go could mean that we now can sign someone for the sum of his first year deal with the Panthers.
That could of been one of the deciding factors, if I have this right, which I haven’t checked, so don’t quote me on it.

Very odd
It didn’t seem like they cared at all about keeping him.

Actually said the exact same thing 10 min ago on Twitter. They made NO effort to keep him and every time his name was brought up Mike T would just answer in a very short, disinterested manner. With the non-tender they were almost begging for someone to take him.
So I guess we can take two things from this:
A) Jets see a future in Clowney (I don’t, personally..)
or
B) Jets are drafting a WR.

When there is a cap we do absolutely everything we can to stuff it to breaking point, when there isn’t we make all the cuts imaginable to save the $$$‘s. Is something big on the horrizon, maybe a move in the draft to the top that would require the team drafting to spend some serious $$$’s…..just thinking out loud here, we know how Mike likes to make the splash.

I gotta feeling something is looming too. If it was strictly financial, I gotta believe that Gholston would’ve been cut ASAP.
I remember reading somewhere*
that cutting the ghost wouldn’t free up much cap space as he had so much money guaranteed money.

Why is everyone hating on Clowney
1st off yea i think this move was stupid and Wright was a great special teamer
But still I don’t remember him ever catching a ball or even lining up at wr other than the game against the chargers where he had a really good block for shonn greenes td run. I’m not saying Clowney is the best or going to be a great wr in the nfl but just because some one says ‘he is making improvements at receiving’ doesnt really mean much. I’m pretty sure people were saying that Brad Smith was making improvements at wr in this past off season but is he a legit wr in this league or on the team, no. Once again I’m not saying Clowney is considered a legit receiver either but give the guy a little credit he was drafted deep in the 5th round and worked his way up from practice squad to the regular roster and even played a little.

I am the first to get on Clowney, but you make some fair points. He obviously is a hard worker to get game reps considering how far he has had to come.

Salary Cap Number
According to NYJetsCap.com, right now it stands at:
$110,081,404
Remember that last year’s was just shy of $127,000,000. Anyone know anything about PSLs, how they’re selling (or not lol), and if that’s affecting the budget? Or the possibility of a lockout in 2011 and if that’s a cause for concern?
...you're a jet all the way.
'cause if not,
I’m thinking that there’s big fish on the horizon.

A lot of guys have also been saying he’s been making improvements as a WR also (which is more than I can say for Clowney).
Maybe this is why we lost him. Carolina has no WR’s outside of Smith and maybe they gave him the chance to compete for some reps on offense. If that’s the case, you can’t blame the Jets or Wallace. I can’t see why else he would leave the Jets to go to Carolina.
As for Westhoff, I think he’ll be fine. If losing Wallace Wright (don’t get me wrong, he is good) was going to mess up our special teams that bad, Westhoff wouldn’t be the best special teams coach ever.

Not necessarily. Wright only had 8 catches in 4 years, so it’s not like they have to draft a receiver to replace him. If anything, Carolina saw him as a receiver and we didn’t. We will have to replace his production on special teams, not as a receiver, something I think that Westhoff will do.

I'm not broken up about this
Wallace Wright may have been good on special teams, but Brad Smith was better.
Did Wallace actually have a single catch this season?
Brad Smith actually made some key plays, even though arguably WR is his weakest position.
Special teams players are not that hard to develop or to find.
As to Clowney, I think he’s reached his upper limit. You expect a #3 WR to have more than one catch per game, Clowney didn’t.
I expect the Jets to draft a WR, although I think it’s more likely to be in the 4th than the 2nd after the Rhodes trade. I wouldn’t be surprised if they added one in the offseason as well.
It's not fair to drill Clowney about not getting more catches
First of all, we rarely every went 3-wide all year long. Secondly, Sanchez was barely completing passes half the time. I think it had a lot more to do with his opportunities than anything else.
Totally agree
There are issues with Clowney running crisp routes and getting separation outside of vertical patterns, but it’s not like we’ve got Drew Brees back there slinging it, either..

Panther fan here. What's the scoop on Wright?
We badly need help in our return game, and also at WR. How’s he as a returner? Think he could develop into a #2 WR?
