Jets Ink Hartsock To New 2 Year Deal

According to the National Football Post, the New York Jets have signed TE Ben Hartsock to a new 2 year deal:

The New York Jets have re-signed tight end Ben Hartsock to a two-year deal, according to a league source.

Hartsock is a former Indianapolis Colts 2004 third-round draft pick from Ohio State who signed with the Jets last season and started seven games.

The 6-foot-4, 270-pounder caught one touchdown.

He also started one playoff game for the Jets.

A good blocking tight end, doesn't offer much in the passing game, but he opened up a few holes this year, had one dumb penalty and some other silly ones. Overall I was happy with him, good to have him back on board.

You have got to be kidding!

He did nothing for us this year. Why didn’t they go after Watson or Baker instead? they are duel threats.

He started 9 games for us and one play-off game, he is extremely valuable in the running game, just because he didn’t show up on the stat sheet doesn’t mean he did nothing. He was superb in run blocking and opened up numerous holes for our top ranked running game. I don’t understand how anyone can say that he did nothing for us this year, he did a lot for us.

Preach on Mr. Wyatt. Preach on.

I agree.

I probably would have still preferred Baker though. He always did a good job blocking, plus he was the touchdown maker! I’m not going to lose sleep over it, Hartsock is solid, I just always had a soft spot for Chris Baker for some reason.

Because

As you said he added very little to the passing game he is not a duel threat that the defense has to account for during the game. I hope they plan on getting one of the other tight ends and maybe move Keller to the slot he is more of a receiver than TE.

We knew what we were getting when we signed him, we asked him to come in here and block, he came in here and he blocked, and he did a damn fine job of it as well. It seems we are rewarding him for a job well done. It’s not going to cost a while lot, bringing him back was a very smart move, no guarantee we can get another guy in, signing out own who did a stand up job was vital for the 2010 team, especially if we plan on having a successful running game.

Did anyone else read

that the Patriots are planning on making a run at Leon? That would be disastrous! They have 3 2nd round picks

by chrebetsthebet on Mar 8, 2010 3:43 PM EST reply actions

The Jets would probably match then.

Yeah but what if they do one of those “poison pill” contracts?

by chrebetsthebet on Mar 8, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

Then it will be a litle payback for us taking Martin off them……..

Would I miss Leon sure, would it leave us short, absolutely, would I like another draft pick in the 2nd round, absolutely lol

Losing Leon wouldn’t hurt half as much as losing Leon to the Patriots.

Is Kevin Faulk a free agent?

if the Pats steal Leon, I would just sign Faulk (I think he is a FA), take the 2nd, and then next year draft a 2011 version of Leon.

Im with you Dave. I will sadly let Leon walk for a 2nd rounder. Unfortunately at any price for me. I like Gerhart too much, and we got along fine with Brad Smith last year.

The league has passed regulations that make it very difficult to poison pill these days. It’s going to be even tougher in an uncapped year.

I highly doubt anyone would take a gamble on giving Leon such a big contract that the Jets can’t match. It would be safer for them to draft a running back instead. With Leon coming off an injury and not being ready until late summer, you’re taking a chance either way, so why not just draft a running back who will cost less and be available as early as rookie camp.

Rich Cimini confirmed it earlier, as well as NFP

As of two minutes ago— Boone, Glauber, and Wasczak are still waiting to confirm.

I didn t see Cimini. So if he confirmed, I guess it’s good.

I just wouldnt use NFP as primary source. Theyre up and coming and definitely legit, but I trust the beat writers who are at Tanny’s press conferences.

NFP was where I first saw it, and that’s when I wrote the article, it was later confirmed by Cimini:

Just weird. Usually when one confirms, they all confirm around similar time.

But some of the guys I listed above I’ve noticed have been careful with their words, not 100% yet.

What that usually means is that it’s all sorted out but it has yet to be filed to the league office, so can’t say it is 100% done.

WAS THERE BEER SERVED AT MIKE T’s PRESS CONFERENCE TODAY? :shakes head:

I’ve only been on twitter a few months but Cimini has pretty much been the guy who’s first to tweet or blog about Jets news. I have to give him credit for that.

Most of has to do with the newspaper’s mantra though.

The Star-Ledger (Manish and Hutch) are very careful about what they put out there.

The Daily News (Cimini) seems to allow Cimini to run the show and if he gets a lead, to go with it.

Also it has to do with how many contacts and who each newspaper has on their rolodex. In this case the source was the Mike T press conference, but depends on what the piece is about and who the source is.

I’m not necessarily opposed to this move, but I wouldn’t have minded a bit more shopping for a better receiver as the second blocking tight end. Guys like Hartsock aren’t terribly hard to find.
