Jets Checklist for 2010 Offseason
Now that the number 2 corner spot has been filled, heres the checklist of things the Jets need to do (in order of importance)
1. Build Depth
Yes, the Jets are, right now, in that “win now” mode. They got this way using Free-Agency and trading up in drafts. This leaves the back end of the roster with a lot of UFA’s. We have been ridiculously lucky that the o-line has had no injuries in 2 years. This draft provides the best opportunity for that. Kris is over 30, most of our o-line is around 30, and the D-line is getting old.
2. Resign Revis and Mangold Long-Term
They’re the best in the business at their respective positions. Mangold is definitely worth big bucks, but there should be absolutely no spending limit on Revis. Keep them both here for another decade.
3. Re-sign Thomas Jones
We just signed a polarizing talent in Cromartie, and there is no one better than TJ than getting everyone on the same boat. He did it Braylon, he can do it with Antonio. Not to mention, Leon might be gone and Greene can’t carry the load himself in a run-heavy offense.
4. Find a Pass Rusher
This should be addressed in the draft. I like Jerry Hughes personally.
5. Keep Kerry Rhodes & Leon Washington
Yes, I said it. People here, I believe, have seriously underestimated Kerry’s ability. If Rex didn’t want him, he would have gotten rid of him by now. In the Jets cover-1 schemes, Kerry’s range is vital. Yeah, he’s not physical, but sticking a bruiser back there doesn’t make guys less open.
About Leon, I believe he will be fine next year. We should pay too much to keep him, but it’s worth it to stretch our budget a tad to keep Leon around.
Side note – this is pretty interesting http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2010/03/ny_jets_acquire_cornerback_ant.html
Coles is contacting the Jets. Not the other way around.

+1 on the post. rec'd
No AD though? Some people think it’s a match made in heaven.
...you're a jet all the way.
i just get a feeling that he wont be half as productive as people think. Bryan Thomas is serviceable, and odds are that we are going to draft someone. Bringing in a free agent on top of resigning Revis and Mangold is a bit much

I think that is debatable at best. Rex is the kind of coach that builds all his player up like they are stars to the media. When asked if he wanted Rhodes back, he said something like, I’m not even going to get into that right now. To me, that says it all. I don’t think Rex likes Rhodes at all, I think he wants a ball hawk back there, but I won’t even get into this again. I just think it is far from certain that Ryan wants him here.

Rex on Kerry returning....
"I’m just going to keep it between us," Ryan said. "I’d rather not make a comment on it"
Rex on Braylon Edwards returning….
"I definitely expect Braylon back," Ryan said. "I see us tendering him a first- and third-round pick, as high as we can go with him. I definitely see us doing that."
That doesn’t tell you anything?

I’m not sure quite how powerful Rex’s opinion is actually. I don’t think he’d ever say he wanted to see Jones leave. TJ going was clearly a business decision by Mike T.
And back to Jones, supposedly he is signing with the Lions, so he will get his chance to punish the Jets next year, possibly on Thanksgiving.
Jones with the Lions
will have a season like LT last year, and you guys will all see what me and crackback and some others were talking about, that the 1400 was far more on Brick, Faneca, Mangold, Moore, Woody and Rich then it was on Jones. I don’t think many people in the business, outside teammates who were personal friends with TJ were very surprised that TJ was let go. I think Rex gets what happens to 31 year old running backs with lots of mileage. They break down. He saw it first hand with Jamal Lewis. Went from the top to the bottom, and fast.
Anyway, my point was not that Rex Ryan has a powerful opinion (although Mike T and Mangini discussed everything together, I don’t know why you feel Mike T and Rex would be different), but to reply to the original post that said Rex wanted Kerry back. Whether his opinion means anything or not, I don’t think he wanted Kerry back, at least at that time, because he didn’t say he wanted him back, which he was very quick to say about Braylon.

i dont want jones back just for his numbers-production. The line blocked FOR TJ, knowing he had thier back. TJ back there gave them an extra edge that cant be explained as an athelete. Its not like im out there playing guard, but as an athelte I can relate.

It all comes down to wheather Kerry is willing to work with Dennis Thurman, the DB coach. When Kerry finnaly began to, his play was much better and won his job back. Rex knows talent when he sees it. Which is why Kerry hasnt been dealt or anything yet. I think odds are Kerry stays a jet, and If he works with Thurman, hell stay. But thats the key.

Tate
If Golden Tate falls that far down to us I’d scoop him up in a heartbeat. If he aint we need more speed in the safety spot or a good LB who has speed.
So much for #5
Now that there’s a gaping hole at Safety, building line depth comes second behind finding Kerry’s replacement.
Yep #3 is gone, #5 half gone with the other half still possible...
still if they sign LT, and Pool can stay relatively healthy, I really think they improved the team over the alternatives.
safety vacancy
Don’t be surprised if James Ihedigbo or Dwight Lowrrrrrry is the starter next year with Smith in on expected running downs.
