Brad Smith: Round 2 Tender

via NJ.com

The team also put a second-round tender on wide receiver Brad Smith, a fourth-round pick in 2006.

I tend to believe that will be enough to keep Brad in green and white. He's a useful gadget player and a special teams standout, but you can find starter caliber players in the second round. If some team does step up to the plate, the Jets face an interesting dilemma for that reason. I think they'd have to at least consider letting him go.

What do you think?

Here's where I'm at

Still having a very hard time believing Brad Smith and Leon are both the same “price”

Even with Leon coming off major surgery, still feel he is one caliper or one notch better.

If you and I notice it, surely plenty of GM’s will. And we’ll be down to one RB who has carried the ball 20+ times/game only twice in his career?

Obviously a lot of FA RB’s out there this year, as you posted. But still, would be very upset if we let Leon slip through our fingers after releasing TJ.

Difference between 1st and 2nd round tender is around 700K, Jets are just asking for 2nd rounders with this deal……

I’d like a 4th rounder for Smith

If somebody offer a 2nd rounder… Bye Bye Brad. Could do a lot of things with a 2nd rounder this year. There’s a lot of first round talent that will be in the second round this year. So the question really is whether you’d give up Brad for a first rounder? Which is a no brainer.

Really depends on what happens w/ Leon. If we lose Leon, I don’t think we can afford to lose Brad. We need that utility-type player.

But if we can keep Leon, I totally agree with you, makes him expendable.

To be honest, I don’t think we need a utility/wildcat-type guy. Most teams with good QBs don’t do the wildcat-type stuff. And thats all smith is really good for. He’s value-less as a WR. We can always find return guys and special team guys. We could draft another RB and a WR with the 2nd round picks that will give us equal/better talent than those guys. Or we can grab a few monsters for defense and shore up the losses of those 2 in the later rounds. We could always make a run at Sproles to replace Leon.

The prospect of having 3 second round picks this year excites me more than the thought of losing those guys scares me.

We’d have to bring in someone to return kicks obviously, but that wouldn’t be too hard.

We will loose one of them, I think.

I DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS TENDER. My gut says we will loose Leon. They both run the wildcat in there own way but Brad’s not really needed if Washington comes back to the team healthy. I just dont see much of a market for an unproven WR who runs the option. Washington has the respect around the league as an all purpose yards monster and the stock on a Josh Cribbs type has never been higher. Plus, I see plenty of teams with aging backs that would be happy to give up a 2nd for him. Leg breaks are not like ligament ruptures. Bones heal 100%. Its all up to Leon if he wants to be the same guy he was in the past And he has the drive of a champion. LET’S HOPE ITS A HIGH 2ND CAUSE HE’S AS GOOD AS GONE.
