Gang Green Nation Community Mock Draft Pick #1

We're kicking off our community mock draft today. The Rams are up first coming off a 1-15 season. Unfortunately, the person who signed up to pick for them missed their deadline. I don't want to go off on a tangent here. I understand that real life sometimes intervenes. Still, we had more people wanting to participate in this than we had available spots. If you can't make your pick for whatever reason, please let me know. We're on a tight schedule here and trying to get two rounds done before the  actual event.

David will pinch hit for St. Louis.

With the first pick in the Gang Green Nation Community Mock Draft, David Wyatt selects for the St. Louis Rams...

Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska

Suh is about as dominating as you can get, and St Louis needs all the help it can get. St Louis allowed nearly 140 rushing yards per game in 2009, they need someone to solidify the middle for the next decade. Suh has the potential to do that, he is impossible to move, and has great instincts. People like to say that it starts in the trenches. Well it needs to start in the trenches for St Louis, they get a stud here and make the team immediately harder to run on while also adding a top notch pass rusher who has the potential to cause havoc, even when double teamed

My reaction:

I really think the Rams need to go quarterback with this pick unless they think neither Sam Bradford nor Jimmy Clausen is a franchise player at the position. They've passed Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez in the past two years. They aren't going to improve much until they address the position. A franchise quarterback is more valuable than a franchise defensive tackle.

With that said, I still have a tough time saying this was a bad pick. I caught a lot of Nebraska games last year, and Suh was just incredible. Everybody saw what he did against Texas in the Big XII Championship Game, but he was just as dominant against anybody else. Steve Spagnuolo built the Giants into a championship caliber defense around their defensive line. Suh is a one man wrecking crew. If the Rams can turn their second round pick into a quarterback by either trade (Donovan McNabb) or selecting a guy (Colt McCoy), I think this will turn into an excellent pick.

The Draft:

1. St. Louis (David Wyatt)-Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska

St Louis goes Bradford here

The point of this mock is to play GM for the team you represent. Meaning its your decision on who to take. So if you don’t agree with the general consensus you can go a different way.

David likes Suh better than Bradford. I happen to agree. Detroit needs a ton of help on D, and Suh is a rare talent. I don’t think Bradford will amount to more than a back-up, IMO.

If so, St. Louis’ draft would remind me a lot of the year everybody ripped San Diego for taking LT (BPA) over Vick and addressing QB with Drew Brees later.

I’m just not sold on a QB like Bradford coming back from a serious injury, being worth investing the money of a first round pick. Bradford is not head and shoulders above other QB’s in this draft, and several question marks. Take the more sure pick, and address the QB position later.

As I said, if you don’t buy them as a QB, it’s a perfectly legitimate move.

Let me rephrase that. Taking a guy like Suh is always legitimate. I do like Bradford and Clausen, but if you don’t feel comfortable with the early QB’s this year, this was the move.

If there were a QB in this draft class that I believed in, then he would of been the guy, but the last thing a team like the Rams need is to invest heavily in a certain position, only for it to fail. There is risk with every single pick, but some are bigger than the other, I have absolutely no confidence in Bradford coming back from his surgery, in fact I thought more Clausen than Bradford when making that pick, in the end I went with what I thought was the best/safest, most logical choice for a team still quite a way from competing for any Championships.

I also like some later QB’s like McCoy/Skelton/Crompton

I feel like they are further away from being decent than just having a new QB so I like this pick.

Darrelle Revis once won a game of Connect Four in three moves.

Good Pick

Not sure if I like Suh or Gerald McCoy better, but I definitely don’t like QB at this pick. St Louis needs help all over and year after year teams who fit that description who take a QB high invariably end up with a bust. I think it’s more the guys around the QB than the QB in most cases. That said, I’m also not high on either Bradford or Claussen.
