Mike Iupati -- Can We Afford to Pass Him Up?
The 6'6" 330 lbs Samaon (gotta love Samoans) left guard out of Idaho very well could be available when we make our 29th selection in this year's draft. Im not much of an evaluator when it comes to offensive lineman, but he has a reputation for being a mauler in the run-game. He's tremendously athletic despite his gargantuan size (I've always liked that word, "gargantuan") and many predict that he can play tackle at the next level.
Our current left guard, Alan Faneca, will be 34 this year and although he was just recently named to the Pro Bowl, he was invited mostly based upon name recognition. Our left tackle, Damien Woody will be 33 this year. These guys are aging, and we've been pretty lucky not to have sustained serious injury along our offensive front. Keep in mind that we have a QB still in his infancy, an offense heavily predicated on having a strong running game, and the fact that we've gone two years without sustaining any serious injury in our o-line. Big Mike can fill in at either the tackle or guard position. And if we can squeeze another good year out of Faneca and Woody, and let the big fella learn his craft and adapt to the system, we could ensure that we have a great o-line for years to come.
I know its not the sexy pick, but can we really afford to pass on this guy?

I won't vote yes or no.
I wouldn’t love it on draft day, because I never get excited about lineman, it’s hard to tell whether they can contribute or not (for me), and like you said, they aren’t the sexy pick. That said, he can probably be 2nd on the depth chart at both T and G positions, and can fill in for whoever leaves first. I would probably like this pick a lot in a year or two.
"Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring; besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic."

I think you'd be crazy to pass on him at 29.,....
Although I very much doubt that he’ll be there. As a Bronco fan, he wouldn’t be my top choice, but if the 3 or so players I want are gone I’d have no problem with us taking him at 11.
We are at that level now
where there are no huge, glaring weaknesses on the team. take the best player on the board. build depth everywhere. unless someone is better than iupati is left, take him.
Yes yes yes!
You take him everyone falls in love with the “sexy picks” when this is the best value at 29 he is the best guard in the draft.
We have a young QB and with Faneca and Woody getting older we could use him not to mention that he would get to learn from the best.
He could also come in on subs as well as in jumbo set like Wayne Hunter did Last year our running game would be that much better next year and in the future.

I posted the article that confirmed the jets working him out, it has the link to the original article, so there is definitely a chance we get him after jets brass privately working him out.

One last point in the near future we may not be able to take the best player in any postion; especially the O line. Therefore if you have the chance to take the best guard in the draft and he is high on your value board you go for it.
Then you get booed by the fans in NY, fast forward Shonne Grenne collects 1300 yards LT 750 all is forget forgotten ten jets prepare for AFC Divisional Round.
After season Iupati proves he is ready to start Alan gets traded for a 3rd rounder we lost in the Cro Trade Jets line is set for the future and Cro cost nothing but salary.

I love Hughes but could you pass on the best guard in the draft for a question mark at pass rusher. The jets still have round 2,4,5 to find a pass rusher. I just couldnt see them passing on Iupati a staple at G for years to come for a pass rusher when they could get guys like Hardy later on.
What would you rather have long term Pro bowl play at G or OLB remember pro bowl play at G improves the Running game and Passing game.
Pass rushers statistic are inconsistent from year to year, although we need one ill take the guard and look for the OLB later.

Only thing is, i see Hughes being a Pro Bowler as well for years. So having a dominant edge rusher will allow us to bring less blitzers in order to exact pressure, which will allow more defenders to drop into coverage, which will make our defense all world. Its not that i don’t agree with your points, its just that I find it to be a very very tough call.
Yes it’s a very tough call Mike T has made some good draft choices in the past so Ill back whatever decision he makes
I like Iupati-Hughes-Graham (first tier) then Odrick-Tate(second tier) then Wilson(if not them then)

What do you think about this guy?
Vladimir Ducasse, UMASS. Raw, but high upside. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-qdDdaz3Rw&feature=related
I would like this pick. Iupati can play RT, but not as well as the guard position. He will be dominate in the run game but like most rookies, he could benefit by not immediately starting. It would be a perfect fit for the Jets because we wont need him to start unless someone gets hurt, in which case someone gets hurt. It’d be a huge insurance policy that will pay dividends after the first year. Also may be we can finally see less of Wayne Hunter too!
Sexy pick huh!
I belive Vernon Gholston was considered a sexy pick. Lets leave the sexy out of it. You take the best player available no matter what position he plays.
wouldnt be too bothered
Would rather take a D lineman but if he’s there then could be aN amazing pick up.
Some people may not agree with me on this point however and that is that slauson our draft pick from last year has potential to be a starter in the next couple of seasons for us watching some college tape on him and he just seems to dominate.
so wouldnt be bothered if we did or didnt pick lupati
+1
Couldn’t of said it any different than Leamg , I still believe that we get a WR with are 29th pick unless Hughes is still available.
I would pass on him
I admit I have a definite draft-for-need bias. I would rather draft a pass rushing DL or OLB in the first round. I could see taking a guard in the second or third round, although my preferences would probably be safety in the second, WR in the third.
Officially contributing to worldwide confusion since 1997
I am hoping...
that the Jets don’t get to take Iupati because I hope the Steelers will take him first. I think this guy has a tonne of upside and could probably play now… well maybe not for the Jets, but for most teams.
I may be old but I... oh d*mn, I forgot what I was going to say.

Guards
I was listening to Tim and Pat on NFL Radio the other day and they made a good point that I rather agree with. Theres no question that Iupati has talent, size and great upside, but why take a guard in the first round? Sure it addresses our need of depth on an aging O-line but tackle is a far more worthy selection in early rounds. The guard position is much easier to fill with late round picks, look at brandon moore, he was undrafted! It might be good for our ground and pound style, but as Sanchez progresses and we move towards balance in our offensive scheme, the need for guard diminishes slightly and we will be able to make due with a player picked in the later rounds. Good player, wrong selection at #29.
And the hooooome of the.......JETS!
