Another GM on Brodney Pool

The Daily News asks a GM from another team about Brodney Pool

"Pool has had four concussions, so that's iffy. As a player, he's a good athlete. He plays with tunnel vision like a lot of players do. He's not real aware in pass coverage, but he's solid against the run. He's got talent. He doesn't have Rhodes' ball skills in coverage, but he'll come up and hit you. In a way, he's the opposite of Rhodes. If you had a guy with a concussion problem, you'd want it to be Rhodes because he doesn't hit anybody. Pool will hit you."

I don't think there's any question given his talent, the contract could turn into a bargain and could end up well worth the risk. Those concussions are still scary considering his style of play. I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable with the depth at safety at this point. We're just one bad hit away from Eric Smith being the full time starter.

Pool

it is a short, cheap contract, so that is good, but people should not discount the concussion problem just because he has rarely missed time. First, the league is cracking down more and more on this, so he might miss time even if he and the team doctors think he can play. It should also be noted that the Jets team physician in charge of this is the guy who just got booted from being head of the NFLs “concussion” board because of his view that this was ll being overstated and basically denying the studies that show the long term increased risk. I agree-it would be nice to have more back there than Smith, etc.

Wow, our team’s head (as in cranium) doctor is an ass >_>

For not being very aware in pass coverage, 4 ints in 11 games is pretty good!

I was a little confused by that comment, his coverage stats are more than just a little decent, so to say he is not aware seems to be over stated here.

The Draft

I think this articl really doesnt give pool enough credit for his coverage but lets not forget there are three good safetys in the draft, Berry from Tenn Thomas from Texas and Mays form USC now Berry and Thomas might be a long shot but Mays might fall to the Jets even Kiper thinks so they might nbe worth the risk especially cuz brodney is very risky with his concussions and Smith cant fill the hole if pool goes down

I don't mind us being one hit from Eric Smith being a starter...

I’m glad they signed Pool and would of course like to see us look at a safety in the draft, or even go after Sharper. But I Also think Eric Smith is a great back-up, he has boarder-line starter talent at either position, and is great for depth, no he is not an all-pro or on the talent level of Pool (or Rhodes), but he is certainly not a liability on the field.

I’m comfortable with him for the most part. I think his lack of speed is a liability against certain teams though and would definitely like to take a look at another safety for the future.

Smith is decent enough, and although the concussions are a worry with Pool, I think we have decent coverage. We definitely don’t need to spend a first or second round pick on a safety, it’s just not needed, unless Berry falls to you which is obviously not going to happen, then pass on that position.

I also think Pool will be a big improvement over Rhodes in the defense when you consider the addition of Cromartie

who’s not a good tackler, we need a person who could tackle first at FS to make up for that, that was certainly Rhodes biggest weakness. We now have ball hawks at both CB, so its not a big need in the secondary.
