Jay Feely To Visit Cardinals

I was starting to wonder when he would start testing the free agent market, making visits, Fox sports reports:

A source told FOXSports.com that Jay Feely is scheduled to visit this weekend with Cardinals officials.

Feely, 33, is coming off a solid season with the New York Jets. He converted 30 of 36 field goals during the regular season and made all 32 of his extra-point attempts. Feely also served as New York’s emergency punter during a first-round playoff victory against Cincinnati.

Although I was hopeful we would bring him back, I'm less optimistic every day, and wouldn't be surprised to see him join Kerry in Arizona.

Damn.

Darrelle Revis once won a game of Connect Four in three moves.

I think the Jets have forgotten how important it is to have a reliable kicker. They’ll be making a big mistake if they let Feely walk,

Dumped Edgar Renteria and adopted Buster Posey. Biggest upgrade since George Jefferson moved up to a deluxe apartment on the east side!

Damn. It would suck if Feely got picked up. He’s got the perfect mentality to be a kicker on this team. But it would free us up to maybe make a move on a UFA. Hard to let a hitting kicker walk though. He’s in a class all his own as far as that goes.

I REALLY do not want to lose Feely. Rex needs to step up and demand he stay with us, he is one of his guys..

Bingo!

Big mistake if we let this guy go. I don’t want to re-live another Doug Brien moment or wind up wasting a desperation draft pick on another Mike Nugent. Who feels comfortable going into a season (with some Super aspirations) relying on “question mark Nick”? Folk that.. .

Mike Nugent was pretty good.

Only reason Feely even ended up here was because Nugent got hurt. This is just strange, I wonder if something about him they don’t like off the field that we don’t know about, or if they just are doing this strategically because there is/are free agents they want to look at, but I can’t see them just letting him walk over a couple hundred thousand.

What Gives?

What is MT’s plan? I thought he would be trying to fill the weak spots in the Jets lineup and not creating new ones! I feel like we are treading water if not worse in the off season. SIGN HIM! Or Mike would you prefer to sign someone of lesser talent for the same money like you did with LT for TJ.

Feely is clutch, his only weakness is on kickoffs Hopefully folk can at least boot it into the endzone consistently that will make our defense that much better.

I get the feeling they’ll offer him a contract before he leaves. Tragic.

I like Feely. He had a good year. But did anybody else see the KO returns forTD’s we let up this season? In the Fins game when Teddy Ginn had two. Jay’s responsibility is to be the last line of defense in coverage and instead of holding back he would haul a$$ down the field and go for the big hit, ignoring his responsibility. he does it very single time and Ive seen him do it at least three times this year where it resulted in a TD. Thats the one basic, give-in rule of the kicker. Dont let the ball get behind you. I have a good idea about how particular Westoff is with his kick coverage. If they can’t get him to do what he’s supposed to do in coverage then I don’t want him back. Im sorry, I know thats not the popular opinion around here but I scream at my tv every time he pulls that crap. Im sick of it.

Sorry to say mate, that had it not been for Feely we would of given up 3-4 more TD’s last off-season, it should never be the kickers responsibility to bring the return man down because he shouldn’t get to him. If Larry Izzo hadn’t of whiffed on a tackle and I can’t remember who it was, but someone completely didn’t hold his edge containment, when they get down the sideline. Jay saved far more TD’s than he gave up last season, I want a kicker who is busting his butt and is making tackles, you hold back 20 yards, you really think a kicker is going to be able to keep up with a return man? if he doesn’t get him coming out of a cut close to the line of initial contact he is not getting him. I have never seen a kicker stay 20 yards behind the play and be effective trying to bring the ball carrier down. The TD’s given up were a complete break down in containment. You can’t blame the kicker for that, at least not in my mind.

To be fair

Ted Ginn Jr. is also ridiculously fast and at least one of the return TDs he did a good job of avoiding/breaking tackles. Can’t put it all on the Jets sucking for once lol :P

Its not the kickers responsibility to come busting down the line trying to make tackles. His role in coverage is to sit back and be the last guy between the ball carrier and the endzone. It’s what your taught from Junior high on up to the pros. We actually had the same problem a few years ago with Ben Graham bc he was a ruby player that was used to trying to make the tackle. I remember reading about it in newsday about how the SP teams coaches were trying to break him of that habit bc of the potential for a guy to run back punts for TD’s. Kickers make last chance tackles or force-out all the time. It’s their job to do that. In fact coverage guys are taught to, at the very least, force the return guy to the sidelines so the kicker can make an easy force-out to save a TD. Sure it’s nice to see him bulling down the field and truck sticking guys. Everybody stands up and cheers bc it’s the kicker and theres a wow factor but no coach wants to see his kicker running down the field trying to be the hero.
Look, I did say that my opinion wouldn’t be the popular one so I expected ppl to dissagree but let me just clarify what I was trying to say. I love Feely’s tenacity and he’s a great kicker but he is out right IGNORING Mike Westoff and blowing his coverage. It’s part of his responsibility. What happens on any team when a saftey gets beat in deep coverage over the top? He rides the pine bc hes not doing what he’s supposed to. I just have a problem with one thing he does bc it’s has the potential to loose your team a game. And we all saw the potential for that to happen in the Miami game. And im sure the coaches feel the same way.

Ask any coach if this is what a kicker is supposed to do in kick coverage and that coach will tell you that enrages them just to see it. If he was playing deep I would expect him to at least save one of the two TD’s on that video. I want him to break this habit. Thats all.

It sucks if he goes elsewhere but I'm not gonna cry about it

Kickers come and go, and they seem to do better with a change of scenery so I think Nick Folk will do fine for us for this year at least. But let’s be fair, Feely missed a couple of kicks he should have made last year in pressure situations, so it’s not like he’s an amazing FG kicker which is his main job. Of course, Folk did a lot worse last year…

But anyway, the main point is that kickers tend to be overvalued and their performance goes from really good to really bad at really random times. Feely does a lot of little things right and he plays with a ton of heart and is a good guy in general. It’d suck to see him go, but I’m not gonna lose sleep over it. Folk’s a better kickoff starter and we should be scoring TDs instead of FGs as much as possible anyway.
