Backup QB?

Has anyone heard if we have actual interest in bringing in a veteran quarterback to back up Sanchez? The markets pretty dry at this point since a lot of our options have been signed, including Pennington, Jim Sorgi, and David Carr, 3 guys I really wanted us to sign. I think I would rather eat my right arm than see Kellen Clemens take another snap in a Jets uniform. But our best options at this point are Derek Anderson, Charlie Batch, Daunte Culpepper, Rex Grossman, and Chris Simms. God help us if Sanchez misses a snap this year.

Charlie Batch and Rex Grossman were made in the same mold. Cant take a hit dont know how to check down to other options, Culpepper is injury prone and was never that accurate or capable QB, he had good receivers.
Simms is tough and has yet to show what he can really do and Anderson is a mystery, did he do badly because of his situation? or because he could not progress in the NFL?
Honestly I would like to see Anderson in a starting situation to see if he really has what we thought he had his first year.
If I had to chose I would take Simms, learned from very good coaches, shown to be a good backup. He is the least risky of all the QB’s mentioned.
But Anderson has the most upside for whatever that’s worth

Simms

I loved Simms till last season. Something has to be wrong that the Broncos went with a hurt Orton over a healthy Simms.

Well, their coach

did bench their best player for no reason, cutting his nose to spite his face, in a must win week 17 game, so, ya know.

back up QB

From seeing him in pre-season last year, Ainge is the best back-up we have and Clemons should be traded if there’s a taker out there.

by wwhyme on Mar 17, 2010 7:21 AM EDT reply actions

Ainge

I really feel Ainge will take a leap this year to take the 2 spot he knows the system extremely well and seems to get better year after year, I really don’t think we need a vet. I mean Matt and Schoty are both doing a great job with Sanchez so signing a vet who would have to learn our system is a waste of both time and money.

by JETSFAN IN SC on Mar 17, 2010 8:48 AM EDT reply actions

I agree

Many forget that before his senior season, I Ainge was thought of as a first-rounder, and a high one at that. And then Tennessee tanked for multiple reasons, many of which were not his fault.

I say bring in someone like Simms who has potential, let him learn the system as #3, Install Ainge at #2, and trade Clemens for whatever value he may have to upgrade another position or get some more draft picks.

We are gonna shock them with 5,000 mega watts of raw ROO POWER.

by psuwxman on Mar 17, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Ainge? Again?

Is awful. Ratliff looked good as our #3 guy too. Yet he has been awful beyond belief from every report coming out of Cleveland.

Isn’t Leftwhich still out there? He did a great job as backup for the Steelers.

My argument for Anderson is that if you believe Clemens can backup, then Anderson can backup. Anderson not only can handoff as well as anyone else, but other teams know that he has a big arm that can reach downfield in case teams stack the box.

I say just make B.smith the back up hes a beast the other team would be confused all the time and not know what to do haha.

by Tj Doyle on Mar 17, 2010 10:57 AM EDT reply actions

The worse the back-up the better. If Sanchez goes down for an extended period, i’d rather tank the season and get a high draft pick, than scrape to win maybe half the games Sanchez misses and get bounced in round one if we make it.

Amen

This is something that should be addressed sooner rather then later. Clemens looked really bad last year when he played. I think that Ainge might be able to do the job better, but we really need some kinda help in this area…that is a scary thought

Not Just Yet

This is a very good post Joey D but the jets have to focus on other things right now besides the backup qb i kno we need a solid backup just incase sanchez has further knee problems especially after surgery. And know with the good options like delhomme c penn and sorgi gone we might have to wait and go another year with clemens and wait til next year for a solid vetreran to appear. But the jets right now need to focus on signing leon washington i kno a lot of ppl want the second rd pick but thats retarted we need him as a special teams ace to set up our running offense at the 35 or further almost every kickoff and as an amazing 3rd down rb that can catch and always break a big run, and now with tye hill on the market i say pursue. So a backup Qb is importnt but many other needs must be fufilled first

but thats retarted

and that’s ironic.

How do we need Leon as our special teams ace, when we have Brad Smith. There are a lot of people in this draft who can come in and return punts and kicks. It’s certainly not retarded to consider the benefits of getting a 2nd round pick in a very deep draft for a 28 yard old RB who relies on his quick cuts and elusiveness, who is coming back from serious surgery on his leg. I think it’s a little silly to call that retarded, in fact not considering it is probably more retarded than considering it.

Especially considering he can't even spell retarded correctly.

Garcia?

I know everyone is going to detest the mere mention of this but Jeff Garcia seems like a good fit to me. I know he just turned 40 but we aren’t looking for our qb of the future here. He would come dirt cheap. He is experienced and has always exceeded expectations. If nothing else, he would be a good mentor for Sanchez and if Ainge beats him out to be #2 then so be it.

im the biggest garcia groupie out there. i thought last season we shouldve gotten him. imagine garcias intangibles in a player with the talent of sanchez.

Charlie Whitehurst

This is a puzzling move for me, Seattle trades place in 2010 with the Chargers, as well as giving up a 2011 third round choice, and they also agreed to pay him $10 million over two years. That’’s pretty strange for me considering the guy was San Diego’s 3rd stringer, and has never attempted a pass in the NFL. I think they must be trying to catch lightning in a bottle again like they did with Matt Hasselbeck.

You'd think

If there was a Charger you wanted, it would be Volek. He deserves a 2nd chance to start in the league. But if I was SD I wouldn’t be keen on giving him up.

San Diego have robbed them blind here, what is the jump in places this year? something like 20 odd. That’s huge this year, for a 3rd stringer who has never taken a snap. Absolutely crazy

That seems to be the notion all over the Chargers’ board (and I’m sure the Seahawks one too). Charlie Clipboard is his moniker over there for obvious reasons.

nrmax88 , your not having a constructive day are you ?

possability , a veterain backup like my vikes had in ferotte to carry the clipboard and mentor young sanchez.

I'm not having a constructive day, why?

Because I didn’t want to take Tate in the first round, and be more like “your vikes”?
