Jets Sign Rodrique Wright
According to Adam Caplan's Scout.com transaction wire blog,
New York Jets
Monday: Signed DE Rodrique Wright.
Comments: Wright was out of the NFL last season.
Wright a former Dolphin and Texas Longhorn won Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 2002, where he posted impressive numbers including 13 TFL and 4.5 sacks. He followed that with a 80 tackle, 7.5 sack Sophmore year. He completed his Texas career as a Lombardi trophy finalist and Rose Bowl Champion. Although a highly regarded prospect with a good upside, Wright dropped to the 7th round as it was revealed that he had a torn rotator cuff, spending the entire 2006 season on the injury list. In his one full season with the Dolphins, he recorded 37 tackles, 1.5 sacks as well as recovering a fumble.
He has excellent size as a 3-4 DE at 6-5 and 300lb's, and he can be filed under camp fodder or interesting project, it depends how you want to look at it. Never hurts to add depth though, especially to a position of need, never know when you are going to strike gold. Solid signing, let's see what he has.

Went over to you-know-where
to see if I could read anything on him. doesn’t seem like they thought very highly of him. I wonder if it is just bad luck with injuries, or he just doesn’t have the heart to play at this level. The size is impressive and it would be nice if we could get something out of him. Nice project, didn’t lose anything so why not.
Yup, might as well give him a shot.

Go, Pac, Go!
a literally no risk-high reward signing. 300 lb DE who can rush the passer is perfect for this system. i can definitely see him as a an extremely effective rotational/ 3rd down player at either the 3-4 end or 4-3 tackle position if he is healthy. i love these types of signings.
I’m with you joey, I like picking up players once regarded highly who have dropped and trying to make them into something. I especially like it with Rex Ryan at the helm, got to trust that man’s judgment on talent.

Lot of talent, came from that Georgia Tech triple option which a lot of people think made it easier for him to get yardage because the defense had to sell out to stop the running game out of the triple option. He has great size, good speed, he stretches the field. Didn’t run too many routes in college, and that will need significant work. Blocking is below par which is surprising coming from a run orientated program. A lot of upside, but a hell of a lot of work to do, if he puts it all together, he could be a star, if he struggles trying to learn the offensive pro running routes he could well be in trouble. Not sure I would want us to take a risk on him.

Yeah I just can’t see us going offense in the first round. Plus if Jerry Hughes is available and we pass on him CB is gonna go berzerk.

Offense first... why not?
The defense was #1 last year and we’ve lost just one player. The offense is lagging majorly and when we got crushed by the Colts it should have been fairly apparent that we didn’t have the firepower to play catch-up. It’s not completely improbable that we go offense first.
Personally, I would love to have Hughes, but I think we take Odrick over him if they both fall to us and I’m fine with that, or maybe we’ll even go with Mays. I could see any of those happening. However, I’m also fine with them going offense and I could totally see them picking up Dez Bryant or Golden Tate or whatever other top-tier WR there is with our first pick. I honestly have no clue what they’re going to do at all.
we definitely need more depth and youth on defense though. sure our offense is our weak point but we have a 2nd year starting QB and RB, braylon and j-co are young, and despite the ages of faneca and woody we still have the best o-line in the league. we need a slot receiver, yes, and im all for drafting someone like tate or whoever, but we also need a pass rusher, a 3-4 end (hopefully wright can fit the bill), and another corner. i definitely think we have a better core on offense than defense.
And I say this because an injury on the OL is imminent. It’s going to happen. It’s pretty much guaranteed. If it doesn’t happen, it would be somewhat significant biological marvel.
I like Slauson and he’s definitely got potential, and Turner and Hunter are great situational guys, but are any of them ready to step in full time for our main guys? Who else do we have besides those three? There’s 5 OL positions and we’ve got 3 backups for them… seems a little precarious to me.
To be fair though are any of the guys who we could draft this year going to be as ready as Slauson/Turner/Hunter to step in if god forbid an injury did occur on the line. I can’t think of too many college teams who run a zone blocking scheme, and so having guys who have worked in the system for a while is probably more beneficial. Not saying we shouldn’t go offensive line, but I don’t think we should go there early.

agreed. we shouldnt invest our 1st round pick in an area of need because of the chance of injury. i agree we need depth but through free agency and the middle rounds of the draft. we want to draft an immediate impact player in the 1st round.
Absolutely, we will find depth in the later rounds, and if Slauson continues to improve we have a filler for this season.
I honestly think our first round selection is going to come down to two players, and that’s Jared Odrick and Golden Tate. Not sure why, just got a feeling that those two are the two players the organisation are really looking at.

I really hope they don’t go Tate in the first round. I like Tate a lot but I don’t he has enough upside to be taken in round 1 unless a team has a serious hole to fill. I think Tate is basically J-Co. Very very solid, can do everything well, but will never be a Pro Bowler. I see him as a nice #2 WR. He might be real nice in th slot, but he’s no where near where Shipley is when it comes to working from that position.
and i would be very happy with either of those players especially if we stay at 29. i definitely think we are planning to move up though. we surprisingly have held on to all our draft picks so far this offseason and we even added a 4th rounder in the rhodes trade. somethings up. this isnt how mike tannenbaum plays ball.
I just asked Ed Thomas, who is a draft guy for Scout.com who he thinks the Jets are highest on in the first round, and he replied Golden Tate. I’m telling you guys, everything I am hearing about our draft all leads back to Golden Tate mainly. He also interviewed well at the combine, and we met him a couple times.

i think it comes down to three players tate odrick and hughes pass rusher is still a need no way the jets dont at least consider him…. i trust Mike T value board tho so im not concerned.

I hope we consider Hughes, I just can’t see us passing on Odrick if he is there, he just makes too much sense, especially as Douglas is still not re-signed and we could lose him.

Odrick is an easy pick there. He’s the perfect size and has tremendous upside. Really can’t miss with Odrick. He’ll at least be a quality starter.
Do you think they might try Gholston at DE. He seemed to do fairly decent from that position from what i remember. He took on blocks, collapsed the pocket… He wasn’t menancing or anything (obviously) but he seemed to hold the point of attack ok. Am i wrong?
I thought he was decent enough when he was played there, see no reason why not, limits the pressure on him to have to get to the QB, he has good strength, he can hold the point, and if it does get to the outside, he has a little speed. Wouldn’t be against us putting him there.

Meh, I replied to the wrong comment with that one but anyway, as far as Gholston is concerned...
Moving him to DE makes sense, but I think he has too much athletic ability to limit him to that. I really hope they give him more opportunities to rush from the edge. I dunno, someone just needs to light a fire under his ass or something.
