Why Tomlinson is Unnecessary

LD is unnecessary because Leon Washington is SICK!!!!!!  I think a lot of us have forgotten (especially me) how freakin good Leon is.  As great as Tomlinson was 4 years ago, even at his peak he wasn't the home-run threat that Leon is.  If ANYBODY is catching passes out of the backfield on 2nd and 3rd and longs it damn well better be Leon.

Its been a long time since we've seen Leon crack one off, and things have kind of changed with the emergence of Greene and the Ground and Pound philosophy.  But Leon is absolutely electric!!!  And i'm PISSED that LD will be stealing his touches.

As great as Leon is in the open field.

He was no L.T during his prime. Although I am puzzled by the move, we’ll just have to wait til the season to see what he’s got.

Not trying to discount LD’s greatness from years ago, but he was never one to go the distance like Leon could. Leon is a TD threat from 70-80-90 yards away.

by Crackback on Mar 16, 2010 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

leon probably isnt quite large enough in size to handle a lot of inside runs, which is how he got hurt. On some teams, that donn’t run the ball 60% of the time, 2 backs would be fine. But since we run so much, having another guy is necessary.

by Ryan Alfieri on Mar 16, 2010 12:01 PM EDT reply actions

Which is exactly why bringing in a 3.7 ypc guy who gets dropped immediately upon contact makes little sense.

by Crackback on Mar 16, 2010 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

im reading some of the conference call clips of this guy…….i think hes in a great situation.

by Ryan Alfieri on Mar 16, 2010 12:04 PM EDT reply actions

Crackback your going to have to deal with it man Jets still think he has gas left in his tank I do also so we got him hes are guy now no reason to keep doing post’s to compare him to Leon or TJ etc he’s are guy and im glad and honestly if leon has a chance to sign with another team I would take the 2nd round pick in a instant.

by Tj Doyle on Mar 16, 2010 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldnt mind unloading Leon for a 2nd or 3rd at this point. But if Leon stays and is healthy, he’s WAY better than LD. LD should not be eating Leon’s touches.

by Crackback on Mar 16, 2010 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know if I agree with that I think Leon’s in better shape hes younger but I think L.T. well help with more screen passes if anything but he well get his touches I really do think you underestimating him greatly,

by Tj Doyle on Mar 16, 2010 1:01 PM EDT reply actions

Im not underestimating him. He’s been rapidly declining for years now. His former team cut him, rather than trying to shop him for some type of return. He’s no where near Leon in th open field. It isn’t 2006 anymore. And even then, I think a healthy Leon is STILL more dangerous than LD was in his prime. Leon is much more explosive.

by Crackback on Mar 16, 2010 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s hard to get anyone to bite on a trade of sorts when even starving African children without internet access knew the Chargers wanted to get rid of LDT.

by Exystence on Mar 16, 2010 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

No not at all Leon is not better then LT in his prime thats a crazy crazy thing to say I like leon alot but for me to say he is better then LT in the open field when LT was in his prime is crazy LT is a Hall of famer with out a doubt you must not of seen him play then.

by Tj Doyle on Mar 16, 2010 1:22 PM EDT reply actions

Leon was absolutely more of a HR threat than LD ever was. LD was never a HR guy. Leon could go from 80 yrds away.

by Crackback on Mar 16, 2010 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

at least you used the right tense in this one. Leon is a BIG ? until training camp, practices, whatever. There is no guarantee he’ll come back anywhere near the player he was. I hope he does, but it still doesn’t make the LDT move a waste. If they’re both on the field and Leon’s covered, wouldn’t it be nice to have LDT available to catch that pass rather than take a sack?

I really can’t understand why it’s always seen as an either/or. The Jets run enough to keep 4 backs happy.

My point was really geared more towards obvious passing downs. Everybody is touting LD’s pass catching ability, but the guy can’t do anything with it when he gets it. Theres a reason they started throwing it to Sproles all the time out in San Diego. Leon is a much much stronger option than LD. LD can’t break tackles, can’t make anyone miss, and he can’t run away from anybody.

Its going to be like watching Michael Jordan with the Wizards. Yeah, its still Michael Jordan. But… really… its not.

not being a wise-a__

But would you be big enough to admit you were wrong if it turns out that LDT does well? I’ll admit my mistake in backing him so much if I’m wrong.

Gentleman’s bet?

Of course. Im not rooting against LD. I just hate the move if we don’t unload Leon and get a solid backup. i think it actually hurts the team.

Plus i wanted to give Leon some love. And i must admit that part of the reason i wanted to talk up Leon was that so maybe others would join in and maybe shine some attention on him. Maybe create a little buzz around SB Nation as visitors drop by. Lol.

agreed

I’d love to see Leon have a great comeback season, I’m just not as confident in it as you are I guess.

Im not confident in it at all. But as of right now, it seems that the organization is. Until Leon is gone, we have to assume he’s staying.

Crackback

While it is true that LT is not the player he once was with all due respect most of the stuff you are writing is wrong. You say LT has not been good for 4 years? 2008 1,536 yards & 12 td’s. 2007 1,949 & 18. So 2 years ago he had a career year for Jones & 3 years ago he had a year Jones could only dream of having 4 years ago he had the best season ever for a RB. What the hell are you talking about really

by tom spicer on Mar 16, 2010 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

1. Who said anything about Jones?

2. ’07 was 2 seasons ago. What did he do last year? Right, it was his o-line. What happened to his receptions and receiving yards? Right, they had Sproles. Hmmm. But we have Leon. And Leon is better than Sproles.

by Crackback on Mar 16, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Leon & Greene

Greene can not catch or pass block & Leon can not pass block LT is a great pass catcher & pass blocker something neither of them offer (Jones did not offer that either). Also 6 months after his break Leon is still not even jogging yet he is walking under water on a treadmill he is not even CLOSE to coming back & if he does he may never be the same he is 28 & had 1 good year in his life. LT is a 1st ballot LOCK hall of fame player. If we get a 2nd round pick for Leon I would take it in a heart beat.

by tom spicer on Mar 16, 2010 3:33 PM EDT reply actions

When did all of the sudden Greene and Leon become unable to pass block. I don’t remember them missing blocks. Nor do I recall LD being some supreme pass blocker. Saying Leon can’t catch is utter NONSENSE. Leon has better hands than LD and is bigger threat to hit a HR than LD. Leon was always more of a HR threat than LD. LD had great burst but he was never a “take it the distance” kind of guy.

Jim Brown and Emmit Smith are HOFers too, we should go get one of them.

by Crackback on Mar 16, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Saying that Leon is a better receiver than LDT is silly. You know that LDT caught 100 passes in a season right? At the very least, they’re equal. Leon’s a great receiver out of the backfield but LDT has set the friggin benchmark in that regard.

by Exystence on Mar 16, 2010 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

LD had more catches bc LD was thrown to more often. Have more catches doesnt mean you have better ability to catch. Leon has fantastic hands.

by Crackback on Mar 16, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, but at a certain point volume matters. You don’t get thrown at over 100 times by accident.

by Exystence on Mar 16, 2010 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Crackback you are WAY overvaluing TJ

I don’t know about you but I was pissed when TJ was stealing touches from Leon early in the year and basically all of 2008. We have to be honest with ourselves—TJ was basically, on his own, a barely above-average back at best. He’s not a guy that ever was going to create his own plays like a Barry Sanders or even a Leon Washington. He takes the first hole that’s given to him and pretty much nothing more. Particularly last year, he broke tackles pretty much never. I can’t tell you the amount of times I yelled at TJ on the TV after he just fell down for a 1~3 yard gain after getting touched.

LDT may not be necessary, but neither was TJ and he’s gone now. It would have been nice to keep him and pay him but in the end I think it was the right decision. LDT can do what TJ did, and he potentially has more upside. If not, then he’s still the 3rd RB on the depth chart, thus who cares.

by Exystence on Mar 16, 2010 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

How am i overvaluing TJ? I didnt even mention TJ. But i agree with your assessment of him. And TJ is BETTER than LD. I don’t think LD can do what TJ did, and I don’t even want what TJ did. TJ was over-rated. We need a guy behind Green that can: 1) have the ability to actually run; and 2) have the ability to stay healthy and produce if Green goes down for an extended period of time. LD doesn’t bring either to the table.

by Crackback on Mar 16, 2010 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m almost positive that if TJ and LDT had switched places last year, LDT would have at least equalled TJ’s performance and TJ would have been WAY worse than LDT in his situation. If TJ averaged more than 2.5 YPC over in SD last year, I’d have been AMAZED. You saw how badly our run D completely owned their awful run-blocking OL the playoff game, but did you see how bad TJ himself did against their mediocre as hell run D even behind the best run-blocking and possibly overall OL in the game?

At the very least, I would consider LDT an upgrade over TJ. I’m not going to complain about getting better at a position even though it wasn’t in the most ideal way. One way or another, if LDT doesn’t perform then he’s not gonna see the touches. This isn’t Mangina’s Jets, Rex won’t be afraid to sit down a guy because of his reputation.

And I still think Leon’s gone and we’re gonna draft an RB anyway, and if that happens then the point of this fanpost is kind of moot, isn’t it?

Crackback

No one said Leon could not catch I said Greene could not catch & yes LT is a great pass blocker which Greene & Leon are not 1st Pats game 2009 Adalius Thomas grabbing Leon slaming him to the ground than throwing down Farve (at the same time) Leon could not pass block to save his life. LT never a “take it the distance kind of guy” WRONG! You are comical at this point

by tom spicer on Mar 16, 2010 4:59 PM EDT reply actions

Why this post is unnecessary

LT is not here to take a starting job or to be a major back he was brought here to sell tickets. The wait list was approx. 20 years for season tickets for the jets in the old meadow lands stadium, now there is no wait and they are reducing psl and ticket prices to get people to buy. They did it with Favre to sell tickets and jerseys now they are doing it with LT. Favre didn’t need to be here, we had Clemens (at the time our next franchise qb) and Pennington who everybody loved and obviously still had alot left in the tank. LT is the same scenario, we have Greene and Leon both of whom are excellent and legit threats in the run game. All we would’ve needed was a vet back who was solid and can handle carries when Leon or Greene were dinged up or winded in a game. Why cut TJ for contract problem and bring in LT for more or less the same kind of contract when they could’ve signed a cheaper younger back…TO SELL TICKETS.

^^^THIS

And if sales is the motive (which is the only thing that makes sense), LD will be starting. Sales won’t increase if nobody thinks he’ll play.

by Crackback on Mar 16, 2010 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I am skeptical

The fanbase isn’t stupid and I’m fairly certain that the FO knows that everyone in the world knows that LDT is on the decline. I think it was a B-Schotty move, personally. I’m sure he enjoyed working with LDT in SD and he probably lobbied pretty hard to get him here.

by Exystence on Mar 16, 2010 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Leon is sick.....But

Leon is nasty I hope we don’t let him get away. But think how nasty the Chargers were with Turner,Sproles, and LT in the same back field. Now we have the chance to do Greene, Leon, and LT. Leon is a fun player to watch but you can never be too sure when it comes to injury with the RB position.

Crackback

You say LT has not been good for 4 years than I post his numbers for the last 4 years showing that 3 of the last 4 years. He put up numbers Jones could only DREAM of ever doing than instead of saying you were WRONG. You say what does 2007 have to do with it? Well YOU said he has not been good for 4 years!

by tom spicer on Mar 17, 2010 9:44 AM EDT reply actions

1) Jones stinks.
2) LD rushed for 730 yards 3.3 per last year; 2 years ago he rushed for 1110 at 3.8 per. Both stink. Therefore, he hasn’t been good in years.
3) Lets take the o-line out of it. Throughout most of his career LD’s YAC has been over 9; last year it dropped all the way down to 7.9. Why the huge drop-off? With SD’s vertical passing game, less defensers were near the line of scrimmage, which means LD should have had more room to run. The fact that his numbers not only didn’t increae in this area last year, but actually dropped off cliff, tells me that he’s shot.

by Crackback on Mar 17, 2010 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Crackback

That tells you nothing so I could say since we are a running team Sanchez should have had more room to throw & since he didnt do well well than he stinks that makes no sense

by tom spicer on Mar 17, 2010 3:33 PM EDT reply actions

No. Sanchez did have more room to throw, but the reason he didnt perform well was because he was a rookie. LD’s numbers declined, and have been declining, because he’s shot. Stop apologizing for him and look at it for what it is. Why else would his YAC decline as the offense shifts to a vertical passing game? He’s lost 2-3 steps over the last 3 years.

by Crackback on Mar 17, 2010 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

T Jones

Jones stinks but he had 1,400 yards lasy year LOL. What has Leon ever done? With his career high 650 yards rushing
