Who Does LT Replace?
It's going to be interesting to see which for which back the front office views LaDainian Tomlinson as a replacement. The smart money would be Thomas Jones. He would fit the role TJ would have taken, third back, veteran presence, and pass blocker.
Then again, maybe he'll be Leon Washington's replacement. In theory at least, LT is an elusive back and would be a change of pace from Shonn Greene's brusing style. The Jets could let Washington walk for a second round pick. This would presumably mean an increased role. For all the talk about a three back system, the Jets used two backs for the majority of last season. Shonn Greene got into the rotation only after Washington's injury.

This is the reason I dont like the signing
We don’t need either one replaced! Leon and Shonn Greene should be the only ones splitting carries in the backfield.
But I supposed if LT was replacing TJ it would at least be acceptable, because I still want to see Leon playing in a Jet jersey.
Leon is most likely done, no way he returns to being the same player he was...
at that player was nothing more than an avg. 3rd down back, he’s going to be slower and less explosive now, lets get something for him while we still can.
Thomas
The talk on Twitter about how the LT signing will replace Leon is ridiculous. Their roles could not be any different. If we lose Leon, it’s because some team wanted to take a chance on him next year. We tendered him at 2nd round, it is what it is. This signing has no impact on that.
The only similarity between the two is that both are good pass-catchers and good on screens.
LT replaces Thomas the veteran leader and short-yardage back. Also great at pass-blocking.

Why does he need to be a replacement?
If he’s really OK with being part-time and not the headliner, what’s wrong with using all 3 in some fashion? Greene, Leon, and LDT? It would keep them all fresh and the opposing “D” couldn’t really know for sure what we were throwing at them.
Go Jets
Go Devils
Couldn't have said it better....
Why does this need to be seen as a replacement. Barring injury, what team wouldn’t want to have a tandem of running back like the Jets will have this season?
Me too, also...
These three backs and the Jets strategy are a perfect match.
S Greene has never carried the load for a full season and may have some injury concerns so there is no need to give him more than 280-300 carries.
LT is older and doesn’t need more than 120-150 carries. Plus with his pass catching abilities he can get additional touches in the pass game.
LW is coming off a severe complete break of two leg bones, he should stay in the 100-120 range this year.
Max everybody out in carries and that’s 570 carries still short of the 607 carries of last year by 37 carries. Yes our passing game should improve but make no mistake, we will stil be run first while Sanchez continues to grow. Don’t forget our great O-line which will help improve LT’s YPC and our D which should give the our O more plays per game.
Like I said, with this team and these backs, a three headed RB situation can work. Remember the Giants had a pretty effective 3-headed monster a year ago.

Leon is washed up, lets get what we can for him before everyone else realizes...
he’s was nothing more than a 3rd down back, and after the broken leg will never be the same player.
I don’t agree. Leon is a good running back. I can think of games when Thomas Jones wasn’t getting it done and Leon would come in and gain nice yardage. Even more importantly, he was one of the best kickoff returners in the league.

But the break in his leg was very nasty no way he comes back close to what he was...
he will most certainly have lost a step, thats going to make him useless.
None of the above. He replaces Shonn Greene. Greene replaces TJ, and Leon remains an effective change of pace, receiving option.
Why is that funny
it makes perfect logical sense!

Yeah, I agree with jets47.
Green takes TJ’s role, LT takes Greens, though he brings more then Green did last year to that role, in terms of blocking and catching, and if Leon is here, he does what Leon Washington do.

Green had already replaced TJ. That happened towards the end of last season. That’s nothing new.
Shonn Greene is the workhorse, that was apparent when the Jets released TJ. So in my eyes, he’s not replacing Greene - he’s replacing Thomas.
Thomas’s role this year would have been the veteran in the backfield/short yardage back. That’s what LT will be.

In that context, I agree,
but I see whats jets47 was saying, in terms of roles from last year, Greene will have a workload like TJ’s 2009 workload, and Tomlinson will probably have the same kind of workload as Greene, where Leon, if around, probably will be the same, return game, 3 or 4 catches a game, 5 or 6 carries a game.

Agreed with both Matt and jets47. It just depends on whether you’re looking at it in terms of last year or this year.
Right, that’s why I framed the question as I did. Jones was going to be the third back this year.

I know thats what was kind of assumed, but did any Jets official ever say that? I just don’t see them signing him for over $5 mil to be the third back.
i agree
LT starts with the majority of the carries , buy if greene deserves more it’ll show. the fact is that LT is more of a proven back and he deserves to have the opportunity to start.

Jones.
Unfortunately you don’t make this kind of splash and pay this kind of money to a guy to ride the pine. He will be named a starter. Its a ploy to increase sales. Greene will effectively get equal carries and fade into more carries as the season wears on. But in the beginning, LD will be the starter.
Winning games increases sales, not putting the biggest name in your lineup. Shonn Greene was the starter yesterday, and he’s still the starter even though LT is now here. They’re not going to feature LT because he’s more famous, they’re going to feature their best running back, and even LT knows that at this stage of his career Shonn Greene is better than he is.

I agree but there’s a bunch of guys you can sign or draft that can bring at the very least what LD brings, and can do so for a fraction of the price. This signing has a cache, it creates a buzz. What good does it do if Greene is named starter and LD is only to receive carries on a limited basis? If thats all they wanted to get out of this signing they could have just drafted a kid in the 4th round to spell Greene, and reinvested all that cash elsewhere (Adalius Thomas?).
They wouldnt have done it unless they expected a return on their investment. LD is a bad signing if they only expect to use him on a limited basis.
It's true,
a guy like that will bring in massive revenue in Jersey sales and shit like that, that Darius Marshall, Dexter McCluster, Trindon Holliday, and a lot of these others guys won’t.

Two things to consider. 1) The amount we rush, a limited secondary role with our O is going to be much lager than on any team. Not only that, no way Greene gets as many carries as Jones did the last two years. Greene is only in his second year and I don’t think we want to run any back that much. 2) You don’t want a rookie backing up a second year player ,(Greene), that only had 108 carries, fumble issues and injury issues, and a player that missed the bulk of the season with two complete broken bones in his leg,(LW). Too much uncertainty in going with Greene, LW and a RB from the draft. If you just want to be a playoff team maybe but not if you missed the Super Bowl by 30 minutes and want to get that final 30 minutes to the big dance.

How can you say LD brings certainty? Guy has been on a rapid decline for 4 years. Its not all the o-line out in SD. And if Greene does go down, I sure as hell don’t want LD assuming the lion’s share of the carries. I’d much rather it be a rookie with fresh legs whose used to carrying the load. I’d much rather young and fresh and hungry, than i would old and slow and flacid.
I pray Leon stays
He is my favorite Jet, he’s classy and if he goes to another team i will be vehement and my heart will break.
I like the guys post jets47 hopefully he replaces Greene, Greene is the starter and Leon is Leon

I get what you mean,
it’s hard not to love Leon. It just doesn’t make business and football sense, if you take heart out of it, it doesn’t make sense to pass up a second round pick for a 28 year old scat back coming off a broken leg. There is a wealth of talent at that position every year, in this draft a second rounder can potentially get a cornerstone type of player for a team for years to come, and you can replace Leon with a 3rd or 4th round pick in most normal drafts, as much as I love the guy.

The only player I'd be glad for
Is Dexter McCluster, he is Leon-esque but not Leon. I am optimistic about Leon i think he could get back to himself and I think he has the best years of his career ahead.
It’s tempting but I think playing it safe is the way to go here

Agreed
I always loved Leon. He is an amazing playmaker. He makes something out of nothing. A quality TJ never really had (he only had what the O-line delt him). LD used to have that ability, but not anymore. So I hope all 3 stay on the Jets. Greene as the main back, Leon for certain situations situations, and LD for whatever the hell he is good for.
i think he replaces jones
i think that lt will be a better player on our team then thomas jones for 3 reasons, his presence of being a hall of fame back he would be able to teach not only greene things but also leon washington whereas thomas jones could only teach greene some things being he was never an open field player and was always a bruising short yardage guy… lt was both and he can teach greene how to be more of a short yardage guy but also show him some elusiveness…. and i think that our o-line is just that good that LT should have a better year… his yards after contact proves that… of all the starting running backs in the league thomas jones only gained 50% of his yards after the initial contact (worst in the nfl among starters) which goes to show you how good our offensive line really is…. and lastly thomas jones was never really a threat out of the back field whereas LT could always catch out of the back field and could do a lot of damage to opposing teams and thats why i think LT will be a better fit for us
LT is just a new piece
Jones is clearly being replaced with Greene
LT may take more of Leons roll being that Leon is coming back from a very serious leg injury and now we can allow him to get back to speed while still remaining effective and dynamic in the return game.
Schottenheimer is a creative coordinator to say the least and with the three backs we have now I think we will see much more quality touches for all of them.
