Official: Tomlinson Signs On With Jets

According to Schefter:

Filed to ESPN: it's official. LaDainian Tomlinson is a Jet. He reached agreement on a two-year contract. Done.

Finally after over 24 hours of anxious waiting, Jets fans got the news they were waiting to hear, as it was officially confirmed by ESPN, that future hall of famer LaDainian Tomlinson had signed with Gang Green.

This will now raise more questions as to the status of Leon Washington. It also ignites questions as to whether even behind a dominate offensive line, considered one of the best in the league. Tomlinson can raise his average yards per carry from a very disappointing 3.3 in 2009.

The much anticipated finances of the deal, have yet to be revealed.

More to come

I’m still mixed, I like the idea of Tomlinson, and I think he can be a good target out of the backfield. However it raises questions about Leon in my mind.

Willing to give Tomlinson a chance behind our offensive line

That’s basically what TJ received, no? Without the incentives?

My guess would be right around there. Less than $5 million with the possible incentives driving it up.

by random122 on Mar 14, 2010 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Hate this move David that means Leon will either get traded or they won’t match the offer. They must view Greene as TJ and now LD will take Leon’s role which means they will draft a RB or go with C. Washington.

Read somewhere Jets offered LD a 2 year 7 million contract. If thats true they are gonna get hell.

Wow that would be a hard pill to swallow for a lot of people. Can understand people not liking this deal, really can. Let’s give him a chance and see if we feel the same come week 7 or 8.

I have to be honest and say that I’m excited to have him, LT is a guy i’ve admired in the league for some time.

Don't agree

This is a team that carried 4 inexperienced QBs last year, and 5RBs if you count Richardson and Woodhead.

But I think a 2nd round for Washington is good. First off, we picked up Shonn in the 3rd so a 2nd for Leon is good value, and I think this allows us to go sign another teams’ restricted free agent (lose one to get one) and we have other needs, namely CB. I’d like to see us draft a star CB and DE in the first and 2nd round, but I’d be okay with doing the above AND getting a new RB in round 2 AND having some $$ to spend on another teams’ RFA to fill other needs (like a DT or WR)

I’m probably seriously underestimating this. Even though I’m not against the signing, my lack of desire to sign him speaks here. Haha.

Hey it’s valid, he was a 3.3 man last year, but would have to really watch the Chargers to know if that was because of his inability or the situations he was put in.

At least you think he will do better than last year lol

4.2.

Same as TJ. 37 catches, 285 yards.

It’s so hard though, the YPC could vary, depending on touches. As we saw with Jones, sometimes he broke that big one late in the game with a tired defense out there. I was thinking this earlier, I wonder if they plan of having LT start games, like they did with Jones, and letting Greene come in to finish games when the defense is tired, and just physically maul them, like the Cowboys did with Julius Jones and Marion Barber a couple of years ago. The more I think of this, the more I think LT might be a bigger part of our offense then we anticipate.

How many touches do you anticipate him getting a game? 10-12 perhaps? I read some people thought he may only get 5-6, I really can’t see that. Interesting idea with having LT set it up, but will he really tired defences that much. It’s definitely going to be interesting to see how we game plan.

I might record these predictions and then set up a small prize for the guy who gets it’s right at the end of the year. If that’s possible.

I don't think LT tires out defenses,

just having the line in general tire out defenses, and then having a fresh Greene pound them to death. Yeah, I see him probably getting 10 touches a game, 2 catches, 8 runs, and occasional games depending on matchups, or if he is effective during the course of a particular game where he can get 20 touches. For the season, I’’d say probably 200 touches, give or take 20 or so.

I’d agree with that, think we can keep him a little fresher as well, and give him more room to work, his burst isn’t like it once was, but this zone blocking scheme opens up a fair few holes, and LT may well be able to exploit that. Looking forward to seeing him do his thing.

The Jet offensive line can make any 3.0 into a solid 4.5 or higher. I would say Greene averages around 4.8, Tomlinson averages 4, if Leon somehow magically stays probably 5.2. Oh and in KC, Jones averages 3 bcs their Offensive line is terrible. To be honest, he can’t handle running without a huge gap, something Jamaal Charles can deal with there.

If we can move Leon for a 2nd round pick, then I don’t mind this signing at all. But if we roll into the season with these 3 as our backfield, i’ll be very concerned.

Besides, if we draft Jerry Hughes, we won’t have to play offense.

This is why I love this game.

This team now has one of the most prolific rushers to ever play the game. No doubt this team is excited about the fact that this man is potentially coming here to end his career in NY. As the teams stars will no-doubtably “tweet” about their excitment, know that their are five men on this team that are being challenged to the utmost. These five men will sit in a quiet moment tonight and wonder if they can be enough to elevate the end of LT’s waining career. This O-line has been asked to do something that never gets done but is often attempted. Strap in ladies. This is the story of the offseason. The polarizing move that will make or break our season. LaDainian Tomlinson has come to NY. And nowhere does that news rest heavier, then on these five men… D Bricks, Mangold, Fanaca, Damien, and Brandon. These are the reasons why I watch this game. The Little nuances that few people notice that I am goin to pay special attention to every sunday. I can’t wait to see how this plays out.

That behind our O-line LT could do better than he did last year. He can still get to the end zone, scored 12 last year, two more than TJ. He also adds a receving aspect that TJ didnt. Let wait and see. I think this could work if he come in healthy and things go right. I could see him be a 4.0 ypc guy again.

I agree, I can’t see any way with our O-line he is down at a 3.3 average. I think it’s a good bet that he gets back up around the 4.0 mark. Also something fresh, something new for him, a new challenge, he has been in San Diego for a long time.

Wait a sec. This is important

Doesn’t Lowery have #21? Im just assuming Tomlinson is going to take the number from him, due to seniority. No seriously, Tomlinson is basically a senior citizen. Man, Leon is so much better..

Dwight will be forced to give up the number, he might not even need to be forced, most younger guys will just offer straight away. I wonder if that was part of negotiations lol

Wasn’t that long ago Leon’s leg was L-shaped. If we can unload Leon (who might never be what he was) for a 2nd rounder, we can draft a damn good back.

I think Lowery has to give it up if LD wants it, unfortunately.

by Crackback on Mar 14, 2010 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Lowery shouldn’t have to give up his number unless he wants. LT has no claim to that number as a Jet. He seems like too classy of a guy to make his first act stealing a teammate’s number unwillingly.

With that said, I think Dwight will volunteer to give it up.

I don’t think he is that attached to it, he wasn’t 21 in college, think he was 25 right?? so with Kerry gone, and LT coming in, Dwight will probably be good going with 25 and letting LT have 21

LT will probably pay him a little green, or buy him a car or something. That’s usually what the vets do when they want a number from a young guy.

Leon is good but...

LT is a HOF man. Leon is not an every down back. Leon is a grea situational back. And we dont know how Leon will bounce back from his broken leg.

by TheDudeAbides9 on Mar 14, 2010 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Let face facts...

This is Rex Ryan building his team, alot of guys were left over from Mangini, ie, Rhodes, TJ, Leon and more. He wants to bring in guys he feels comfortable with. TJ was great but he broke down at the end of the season. I loved Kerry but he flat out blew it last year, he played terrible to the point he lost his spot. It was obvious that he didnt work for Rex. I will be content with letting Leon go for a draft pick to build up through the draft. LT must give Rex something he feel more confident in than TJ. I will wait till the season to really judge this move. Lets remember that before his last 2 years w/ Bears, TJ NEVER ran for 1000 yrds until he come to the Jets.

by TheDudeAbides9 on Mar 14, 2010 7:28 PM EDT reply actions

I think PSLs have a LOT to do with this. And nrmax88’s point up above might be on point. LD might get some starts in the beginning.

by Crackback on Mar 14, 2010 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

which proves that..

The Jets O-line can make anyone look good. I know for a fact LD’s ypc will go up this year. But it wont be due to the fact that he has gas left in the tank. It is because the Jets O-line is making it too easy.

by VinnyG917 on Mar 14, 2010 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

To be honest I don’t mind if it is LD with gas left in the tank or the O-line making it too easy, as long as yards and scores are put on the board, that’s all that matters.

But then why spend the money?

If you can run with Greene and Washington (both of whom are better then LD at this time.. even with Leon’s leg) then Why bring someone else into the equation?

The only way I could justify this signing is if he is here to replace TJ and NOT Leon. If they run with 3 backs, Greene should get the majority, then Leon is certain situations, and whatever the hell LD is good for…

by VinnyG917 on Mar 14, 2010 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Ask Mike that, I wasn’t too happy with letting TJ go in the first place, and it will have a little something to do with PSL’s. I think his pass protection, and receiving out the backfield is a good asset to have. Could Leon do it, probably, if he comes back healthy and is the same player. That’s a risk however.

Are you a doctor?

Or did you just stay in a Holliday Inn Express last night? How do you know how Leon comes back from his broken leg?

"Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring; besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic."

by nrmax88 on Mar 14, 2010 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Im not doctor but...

Bones heal stronger than they were beforehand. And since a bone isn’t a joint or muscle that gets stretched when you move the leg really shouldn’t get in the way of his speed. He will need rehab to get his speed back maybe, but in the end it really shouldn’t make a difference. That is assuming the doctors set it straight, and there are no bone spurs.

^ Don’t criticize me on that bcs I’m not sure on all of it.. Ask a doctor if you want, but that thing about bones healing strong is definitely true.

by VinnyG917 on Mar 14, 2010 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d more inclined to agree if it was just a fracture. Be he snapped that bad boy all the way through. Yea he might heal to the point of being able to run and all, but will he be able to do what he did before? Its hard to believe he will.

by Crackback on Mar 14, 2010 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

And that only takes into account the physical aspect.

As you have brought up, will he mentally be able to put 100 percent of his body weight behind his broken leg when he has to cut on it, or will he favor it, and not be as strong because of it.

Assuming Leon can't do what he used to..

would you rather them let him walk, take a 2nd round pick, and grab another Fast RB? I guess that would make the most sense. the 2nd round has some good pickin’s for RB’s

by VinnyG917 on Mar 14, 2010 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Personally, yeah unload him for a 2nd without blinking. I like Gerhart, he’s my personal favorite. But i’m inclined to go with a big back over a scat back. I think LD can do the receiver thing, and I’d like to see our backs pound on teams. I would like to see a 2nd rounder spent on Gerhart, Ben Tate, Ryan Matthews, Anthony Dixon, or a later round pick spent on LaGarrette Blount, or Joaqui Bell.

I just like the idea of truelly grounding and pounding with two big, explosive backs. Each keeping the other fresh and wearing down defenses. Breaking the other team’s will.

by Crackback on Mar 14, 2010 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

If a guy like Ryan Matthews dropped to the second

or Gerhart was there I would jump on it, otherwise I like Daves guy Darius Marshall or his type in the 6th round or something, good hands, hard to bring down in space.

"Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring; besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic."

by nrmax88 on Mar 14, 2010 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Most of the mocks I’ve seen have only one back going in the first round. A small few have 2 going in the first, and those have Matthews going in the mid to late 20s. So it could happen that he slips to early 2nd round. Especially if other guys make late surges with good pro days. Like Dwyer from GTech, who everybody was high on early. Or if Jahvid Best goes in the first along with Spiller. Could happen.

by Crackback on Mar 14, 2010 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

So is LD named a starter in order to sell PSLs?

Or maybe they market it as an open competition in training camp…

by Crackback on Mar 14, 2010 7:38 PM EDT reply actions

Who knows.

We know though, the starter label doesn’t really matter. I mean, at the end of the year, Jones was the “starter”, but Greene was the dude. Whether LT starts or not, I think Greene is the feature back, unless LT just goes silly and all 2006 on us.

"Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring; besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic."

But i think he’s less intriguing from a PSL standpoint if he’s not “named” starter. I agree, Greene will get most of the carries anyway. But nobody is going to buy PSLs if they think LD is going to ride the bench.

by Crackback on Mar 14, 2010 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m optimistic about the signing. LDT hasnt been the same since he got injured 2 seasons ago. His carries are somewhat limited, and he understands the situation he is in, and the team is in.

TJ on the other hand has had a ton of carries the past few seasons and still expected to be the #1 guy. He was spent during the playoffs and I think he will have a horribly disappointing season in KC. I think LT will have respectable numbers and allows us to spend our draft choices on depth to positions we need most.

If not TJ, LT’s the man for the job.

by BEB on Mar 14, 2010 10:11 PM EDT reply actions

My sense is that the Jets wanted to feature Shonn Greene, Leon as #2, and TJ as #3. TJ disagreed, especially after having a great season to prove it. However, although Rex and B-Schott said they were going with the hot hand at the time, the truth was the TJ was essentially demoted in favor of Greene. I think they made the right decision obviously.

The Jets wanted Jones to be the third running back and wanted to pay him with that role in mind. That’s why they declined to match the offer made by Kansas City.

I just don’t understand why they think Tomlinson could contribute more than Jones could have. I don’t know if they even tried to give Jones incentives where if he turned out to be right about his productivity and gained fifty million gazillion yards they’ll give him a couple bucks more or something. I just don’t know why they couldn’t have worked something out.

But anyway, I don’t think the team will be agressively looking to move Leon. I’ll be surprised if they do. I think Leon will end up staying, as we haven’t heard anything solid regarding interest in him.
