A Coin Flip to Open the New Stadium

The Jets and Giants will flip a coin to decide which team opens the new stadium.

The date, time and other details of this flip have not been determined, according to the report.

"It's quite possible . . . fans may be invited into the stadium to observe the proceedings and cheer on their side," the report said.

Who would possibly take time out of their day to go to an event like that?

What's the over/under on number of Giants fans outraged if the Jets win because they incorrectly think this stadium belongs solely to their team?

The stadium looks better every time I see it.

Can’t imagine anyone making the trip to the stadium, to see a coin toss…..

Hoping we do get it though, it’s been a while since we had our own home, so how about giving us a break and letting us do the honor. More chance of it opening with a win that way as well ;-)

I still say they should have the Jets and Giants open the season on Thursday night

Even if they did do that, they’d still have to decide which team is home….especially to see which team’s fans get the tickets

Also have to decide the color for the exterior….blue or green…

Yeah well it’s dream. I’m sure it would never happen. They probably have already started planning the schedules and they would have to change everything around. I still think the NFL made a big mistake in not letting the Giants close out the stadium instead of the Jets.

This isn't related to the post

But David or anyone else hear when exactly Tomlinson will make his decision? Is it going to be by tomorrow?

Also ESPN has a rumor that says the Jets are discussin making a play for Brandon Marshall. Why? What is the purpose of having Edwards?

by chrebetsthebet on Mar 14, 2010 12:26 PM EDT reply actions

I haven’t heard any timetable mentioned, I’m guessing that he planned to take the weekend to think it over, and we could see a decision either tonight, or sometime tomorrow afternoon. That’s just a guess though.

I think those rumors came from an article saying that we had discussed the possibility internally, and in true media fashion, they have exploded everywhere. Mike is definitely a leave no stone unturned type of guy, so would be surprised if we had not discussed any player that has been made available. Of course because of Marshall’s profile, it takes on a life of it’s own. I would be surprised if there was any real substance to that though.

Giants fans (and for some reason a Dolphins fans) think it is a travesty we may open the stadium, haha.

Darrelle Revis once won a game of Connect Four in three moves.

Love arguing with them as they have no basis for their arguments. They just say they should have the game because. They also don’t believe the new stadium is a 50/50 partnership.

The only one I have heard so far, is them saying they should have the first game because we had the last game at the last place….umm No…

To be honest Troy, I was just thinking “does it even really matter”? each team will have their own home opener. Who really cares who gets to do it first, if it’s about opening the stadium in general, is Bon Jovi doing that at some point soon.

This is a problem through SB Nation. Tech support is looking into it.

Tried it. I think the Java application kept failing and kept shutting down the browser.

The league office says Commissioner Roger Goodell, not a coin, will make that decision.

The New York Daily News reports that an NFL spokesman (who curiously isn’t named in the report) said on Sunday that NFL Goodell is the one who “determines the schedule,” and that “Other than that, we have no announcements on the schedule now.”

A Giants source told the Daily News that the Jets have been pushing the coin toss idea because they think the league is planning to give the game to the Giants.

The Jets, however, stand by their story, and team spokesman Bruce Speight says, “We look forward to the coin toss.”

Even though it’s annoying to share, it’s cool at least having as much rights to the building as they do.

Strange issue.

Is it any surprise that this non-story is sports-media driven. I find it hard to believe that the league would allow a coin-flip to settle a scheduling issue. That means fate will befall not only the Jets or Giants, but that of every team that plays them and the teams those teams play. This coin can affect the home/away games, weather conditions and potential match-ups of nearly every other team; real or perceived.

It may not matter when or were the Vikings play the Packers on the NFL Network one of these Thursdays, or whether Miami is in Buffalo in early October or Mid-December, but if there is a crucial win or loss based on a believed influence of the schedule based on a coin-toss, I’m sure we can all be assured that the media won’t make too big a deal about it.
