Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

What about Joey Porter or Jamal Lewis

I am trying to figure out what the Jets are waiting for when it comes to looking for a pass rusher. We cant wait for this guy to get snagged up by another team, or wait for him to recieve interest before waking up. Most players constantly say they want to be wanted, and pass rusher is a huge need for us.

Granted Porter and Ryan may have gotten into a little spat, but this is his chance to play with the best D in the league, and he has an opportunity to get serious numbers. Also he might be thinking about getting back at the team that released him. OK, he is pretty old, but still this is a guy who is coming off of a 9 sack season.  He could also be a mentor for players like Gholston, or a rookie pass rusher that we pick up. Isnt this a guy we should at least be talking to?

Jamal Lewis I am not as high on, he is coming off a really down season, and is 30+. However he has spent his whole carrer as a lead rushing bruiser back, and most recently behind a poor o-line. If you think about the RB's we have on the roster Shonn Greene, Power/Speed back low to the ground who excels against DBs, but is a serious injury concern. This is mainly a concern if he is over used in short yardage, obvious run situations. We know Leon is the opposite side of the spectrum, slasher/pass catcher with East/West/North/South speed. If  however we bring Jamal Lewis in to take care of the dirty work we can keep both Shoon and Leon healthy and fresh. Also I am sure he would gladly accept the backup role, and he can prolong his career by taking a lesser role. Can we say the same is true of most of the other high profile backs that we are capable of signing: LT, FWP, or BW. Not to mention none of them give a different dynamic, and really fit only if we lose Leon.

That said I would consider other RBs, ie Lamont Jordan somewhat falls into that category, but I feel Jamal is the best fit.

Hey Vaughn, seems a bit quiet in here tonight, Saturday and all. Porter is a guy that has been brought up a few times over the last month, and generally people were against it. Mainly because he still has a very high opinion of himself so would want a fair bit of $$$, and he was complaining about playing time, we have two starters already, and the coaching staff seem to have already committed to getting Vernon more reps this season. Good or bad decision you can be the judge of. However I doubt Porter would be happy with the reps he would get with us, and like he did in Miami, he could turn into a little bit of a distraction. Then add that to the fact that he has been outspoken in the past for his hatred of the Jets and their fans, not sure he would fit in with us to be honest.

NO to either one. Both are drama queens and underachieve. Porter have always been a crybaby since he was with the Steelers, that is way they got rid of him. Lewis would not be a goof fit for the Jets, they already have an inmature back in Washington, dont need someone else asking to be the feature back in a multiple back system.
We have the talent what we need is leadership, the entire backfield dephtchart for the Jets has not one player with over four years of experience right now, it would have one if they sign T-Rich. The only really experienced players in the offense are in the O-line. I dont count Jerrico as a leader.
The defense has enough playmakers at linebacker. with a possibility for Gholston to turn into something. Rex says he can turn him into a player and I am really on the Rex Ryan wagon, so I will believe in him.
What we need is a future Safety, Blocking TE (Dennis Pitta would be awesome) and depth at the lines. RB, LB and WR are secondary right now. If we lose Leon then RB becomes a need.

Theres plenty of leadership on both sides of the ball. Leadership on offense is generally only necessary from the QB. The other positions just need to do their jobs. I don’t see what leadership at the other offensive positions actually bring anyway. Saying a team needs a leader or a mentor is one of those things that sounds kinda cool but is really unquantifiable. RB is a position that doesn’t require a lot of experience, just need to be able to run. There aren’t many tricks of the trade to learn in order to be a better RB.

If we spend high draft picks on a safety and a blocking TE (especially since we re-signed Harstock) I will shoot myself.

Leadership unquatifiable? There has been a lot of studies that state otherwise, the military has it down to a science. (I was in the Marines)
But no really you can have all the talent in the world and great coaches but if there is player that leads the team to the field the team sucks. What I mean lead to the field is get them motivated and dedicated to the plan and the team. Is hard to understand if you never played team sports (with friends doesn’t count).
It doesnt just sound cool, it is a necessary part of football. A team can be lacking in talent but if they have good leaders they can accomplish a lot.
all those cinderella teeams are good cases, on the other hand look at the Chargers, the most talented team and cant put it together,

I played football in high school and college. In my experience the only true leader on offense is the QB. Others may lead by example, that is by their play, but the motivational mover of the offense is the QB, which is only the case bc the QB has so much influence and control over what happens from play to play. And even in that case, the effect is minimal. True leadership of the team stems from the coaching. The coaches devise the scheme, hold players accountable, and determine the team’s overall identity (style of play, attitude, etc). And you can’t lead from the bench. All we need from our backs is production. Leadership stems from the top.

San Diego is ther perfect example of why player leadership means very little. Phillip Rivers is a strong leader, so was LD, so was Gates. Yet they never make any hay in the playoffs bc they lack true leadership at the top.

Btw, its still uncertain whether Leon will be ready by the start of the season. So RB is the highest priority right now.

When has Jamal Lewis ever been a drama queen, who was immature? I will digress to all the comments about Porter, they make a lot of sense, but nobody has spoken on the real issue at RB which is having someone for short yardage that does the dirty work. Do you really want to make Shonn Greene that guy? Honestly he looks like a great player, but he was injured twice last season, and really we now know Leon is a serious injury risk if he comes back. I am not making a big deal about leadership on offense, I get the whole qb is the offensive leader, but this team has too much young talent on offense, and not enough veterans who will be consistent. Cotchery is turning into that, but really only because he is not becoming the playmaker I had hoped he would. Leon, Braylon, Clowney wildly inconsistent. I thought Leon would TAKE the job from TJ, but even when he was healthy he could not put together big play games. He has all the upside and little to show for it, I feel we could wait his whole career for a breakout. Brad Smith real good in the wildcat but not really a slash slot wr with a great first step, Shonn Green great at everything right now but injury, and possibly fumbling. Give me guys that can get the job done and a positions we are lacking. If they arnt getting Golden Tate, give me Torry Holt, I don’t want to draft a rookie RB unless we dont keep Leon. But a 3 RB system with the 3rd guy who does nothing much different the one of the other 2 is not what we need. Jamal is the best for that job.

Lewis was attacking the Ravens execs for not giving him the money he wanted, he has also been in prison for conspiring to distribute drugs. Drama Queen, inmature? Yes and yes.

I am sorry the question was when. in 2005 he made some comments about the Ravens and also in 2005 he served four months.

Also how do people feel about bring Lamont Jordan back, I know its not a popular thing, but I really believe in our O-line, and I feel sometimes you can just bring a guy in and he can show that he still can play when you have a good running system.
