Tomlinson Will Come to Florham Park

LaDainian Tomlinson left Minnesota without a deal. That means his visit to the Jets will go as scheduled.

Mike Tannenbaum usually gets players he really wants. Brian Schottenheimer knows Tomlinson having spent 4 years with him on San Diego's coaching staff.

I'll open it up to you. What do you think the purpose of this visit is? Do the Jets have real interest? Are they looking to generate headlines? Is this just leaving no stone unturned? Will Tomlinson be a Jet by the end of the day?

Just listening to the idiots, Boomer and Carton interviewing Tanny on WFAN. LT walked into the office at the end and Tanny told them he had to go. They made a joke about offering him 2 million dollars, and Tanny made it sound like he was willing to do that. I have a feeling he’ll be a Jet. The Jets running offense and lack of a superstar running back (although I hopes Shonn Greene will become that next year) makes NY a more desirable place to play than Minnesota, which has Peterson and uncertainty at QB.

Dumped Edgar Renteria and adopted Buster Posey. Biggest upgrade since George Jefferson moved up to a deluxe apartment on the east side!

I am pretty sure he will be. They need a vet in the backfield to help with short yardage and lead the team like TJ did and don’t forget they have an empty new stadium. What better way to get people in than bring in one of the best backs ever (while in his prime) and let him play behind a great O line. Big fan draw and a proven vet leadership in the backfield, while he may be declining I believe not being an everydown back LT can still have 2 or 3 solid years left.

bring in LT, and start fitting his finger, cuz we’r goin all the way

by realsouthace on Mar 12, 2010 9:55 AM EST reply actions

This might be a Woody call to be honest. LT is a marketing machine. We have a new stadium with alot more seats in it that need to be filled and this guy can sell jerseys like it’s his job. I think his legs are shot and he’s half the guy he once was however. But I’m sure he can still play and be a threat in the passing game. A change of New York pace could be good for him. I think I’d like to see him here.
On an interesting note I would like to point out that the Pats are reportedly very interested in LT. If we pick him up were practically begging them to screw with Leon In the upcoming months.

are you kidding me BS taking the snaps LT and SG in the back field and leon coming out of the slot in motion !!!!!!!! are you serious what defense wouldnt be scared of that

by realsouthace on Mar 12, 2010 10:01 AM EST reply actions

I don't get it.

I think Tomlinson’s probably got a little left in his tank, but what does he bring to the team that Thomas Jones didn’t?

by thebyron on Mar 12, 2010 10:17 AM EST reply actions

Marketability, a threat in the passing game.
Im not sure I understand what your asking. Last year TJ was the #1 guy. This year Greene will get the reps. LT isn’t comin here to replace what TJ did here last season. The two situations are not connected in any way what-so-ever. The Jets are interested in alot of what LT has to offer. But hes not being asked to be the top RB.

Not a Jets fan, so I might have missed something.

But I thought TJ was let go because of age and $ issues. If you guys can get LT for a smaller contract (or if TJ wouldn’t have accepted less carries) then I guess it makes more sense, but LT’s average YPC has been plummeting the past couple years and I didn’t really see why you’d want him over Jones. Thanks for the insight though (and that goes to all the others below also).

by thebyron on Mar 12, 2010 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

Sure. It deff seems that the Jets are handing the running game over to greene. They really seem to think he can handle the load. Lt would serve as a mentor and the kid to help limit reps to a young RB with alot on his shoulders.

LT offers a different skill set

He can do more as a receiver than Shone Greene and he is reputed to be a good pass blocker. With him they have a someone to spell of Shone Greene and insurance in case they lose Leon. LT gives them flexibility on the field and during the draft. They wouldn’t have to trade up to get a good back. By filling this hole it means they have one more pick to take the BPA without worrying about getting a hole filled.

I don’t think he will sign tonight but if he does I think he will be worthwhile. If he isn’t worthwhile then the benefit of incentive based contracts come into play.

I may be old but I... oh d*mn, I forgot what I was going to say.

by Cold_Old_Steelers_Fan on Mar 12, 2010 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

I think LT offers a similar skill set to Leon. He would definitely be insurance for losing Leon, but who knows if that will happen. I would prefer another back, but I’d be okay with LT.

Hopefully run the out side....

A yo, LT got good vision , blast some hole’s open he will find it and get yard’s ,LT will be a good fit for the JETS , I got my fingers crossed and prayin to the football god’s .Get # 21 in green ,Mike-T get it done!

by bomberjet on Mar 12, 2010 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

Thomas Jones has been the starter the last few years and gotten the bulk of the carries. I think it’s pretty obvious that Jones was going to lose his starting job to Greene and would be only used when Greene needed a rest. I’m not sure the Jets thought that Jones would accept losing his job after having such a successful season, especially in the last year of his contract. They might have been afraid he would go from clubhouse leader to clubhouse griper. I think they thought it would be better to bring in another veteran, one that would be happy with this role.

LT finishes his runs TJ doesnt

by realsouthace on Mar 12, 2010 10:28 AM EST reply actions

TJ didn’t do much past what the OL gave him already. LT can take the 2-3 yards and make them 10-20 like we saw SG do. When need be LT can push the pile just fine. Really hope this happens.

LT>TJ dont get me wrong TJ was great but LT has alot more attacks then he does.

by realsouthace on Mar 12, 2010 11:10 AM EST reply actions

LT may have something left and, with our OL, we’d get to see it. He can catch coming out of the backfield. We wouldn’t expect him to gallop 50 yards but he will ‘finish his run’. He’s got great ‘presence’, both on the field and off; and, should be good in the locker room. AND, he’ll be a good influence on Greene and the RB we’ll be drafting. For the right price, it’s worth it. This should not be looked as trying to replace TJ or LW, should we lose the latter. This is a ‘Are we set in the backfield, going into the season?’ issue and nothing else.

by GPB on Mar 12, 2010 11:43 AM EST reply actions

If Leon stays we’ll have 3 backs that can’t stay healthy. LD hasnt finished a run in years. And i don’t care about his presence and influence if he can’t produce. And LD CAN’T PRODUCE.

by Crackback on Mar 12, 2010 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

I hope this doesnt happen.

If it does, then i hope Leon gets signed somewhere else and we get a 2nd rounder that we can use o get a real RB. LD might work as a 3rd down specialist on passing downs. Those of you thinking he has anything left in the tank haven’t watched him in 2 years. Those of you who think he’s still good haven’t watched him in about 5 years. The comments that i saw about him finishing runs and moving piles is utterly absurd.

He’s shot, always injured, and will be backing up an already injury-prone starter. Drafting an RB is the only move that makes any sense at this point. Theres too much talent in the draft this year to pass up on grabbing a good back.

Interesting...

I just picked up this post off twitter…

http://buzztap.com/link.jsp?id=1122281&cid=27&source=feed

The post reports that The Jets denied the right to at least MATCH the offer that TJ got. To me this brings up an interesting angle when considering LT’s possibilities of coming here.

by colinyoung on Mar 12, 2010 12:31 PM EST reply actions

I didn’t know if this was already reported but I didnt know we passed on the oportunity to match TJ’s offer. Thats interesting to me. Its clear that the Jets had moved on from TJ the day they released him. To do that with your top performer from the previous year takes balls. From a GM’s standpoint, Mike had to have known for sure that there was something wrong with TJ or they had other ideas already set in place for a veteran back on this team. I smell a signing ready to happen. BTW I could be making something out of absolutly nothing. lol

by colinyoung on Mar 12, 2010 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

It may not be LT in the end, but Tanny made it pretty clear when I heard him this morning that the Jets would be bringing in another running back.

LT is goner be better with our offensive line and he always fall forward. I wanted to keep TJ but TJ sometimes ran into his blocks. LT is more elusive. One thing nobody is talking about is LT ability to throw out of the back field.
