I’m not too sure how interested we are, but LT did say he’s fine with being a 3rd down back.

I think I would be alright with LT with Green and possibly Leon.

No idea how much he has left in the tank, but behind our O-line he should be able to give us something

Exactly

I think at worst he can be as effective as Jones, not running for 1400 yards, but I think he can be a solid back, get 8 touches, hit the hole that’s there, and help mentor Greene. LT is one of the best and smartest backs I have ever seen. I would love to have him here behind our line as a 3rd running back.

Do you really want to roll into the post-season watching him pedaling his bike? Its only a matter of time until Greene gets dinged up and misses a few games. Then we’d have to rely on LD getting 20-25 touches perhaps 3-4 weeks in a row. Id much rather get a youngin who can take the punishment and gives us some pop.

We Messed Up When We Dumped TJ

Now we’ll have to actively pursue LT and probably have to pay him more then we could have paid Thomas.

We need a veteran leader at the RB position, and for goal line/short yardage situations.

Would have rather kept TJ, but understand our needs, and hope we can snag LT and he doesn’t choose Minny. I really think its either us, or him. Two playoff contenders.

Possible move for PSL?

I don’t mind Tomlinson as 3rd back but maybe Woody wants to fill up those seats with a big name signing.

by Jerrad p on Mar 11, 2010 11:30 AM EST reply actions

I don’t think that would make him a RB3 necessarily.

3rd down back, but I still think he would be in front of Leon, especially coming off that major surgery.

Like your thought on the PSL’s though, certainly possible. I did read that interest in PSL’s has been severely down from what they expected to see so far and that they would have trouble selling all of em this year.

That's definately possible Matt.

Its just 3.3 ypc is kind of alarming, but I didn’t think about that it could depend on how leon recovers.

by Jerrad p on Mar 11, 2010 11:33 AM EST reply actions

Yes,

that’s surprising we just had a big run to the Championship. But with the economy like it is I can’t really blame anyone. Woody must of thought the New stadium would increase the PSL.

by Jerrad p on Mar 11, 2010 11:35 AM EST reply actions

Matt I disagree no offense to TJ at all he was a great running back and leader but LT is more a of a complete running back and with are o-line he will do alot better then people think TJs stats came from are o-line everyone knows it im all for this good move on the jets part.

by Tj Doyle on Mar 11, 2010 11:35 AM EST reply actions

I don’t know about that. TJ has consistently been good. Even in ’07 with that horrible line we had, he still went over a thousand yards.

Yer I agree Dave, TJ just produces and that 07 line was worse than any San Diego line that I can remember LT dealing with.

My thoughts on this right now, TJ is gone, as much as I would of loved to keep him, that’s in the past. Can LT do a job as a 3rd down back? absolutely. I expect that 3.3 to jump, but not significantly.

I have no idea what kind of run blocking they deploy on San Diego, whether it’s zone blocking or not, but LT still has a little gas left in the tank

Yeah, but

that was 2007. The 2009-10 version of TJ couldn’t have ran for 1000 behind that line, in my opinion. He ran 300 times, and he only had 3.5 yards per carry, so while the line was bad, it was a bad team committed to the run. TJ was the feature back. LT got less carries this year then TJ did that year (albeit less YPC, but not by much), and they were in a pass oriented attack, where LT was splitting carries. LT had 223 carries for 730 yards last year, I think if given 223 carries next year (which he likely wouldn’t get to without injuries in front of him), in my opinion he is between 900 and 1000 yards, behind our offensive line.

by nrmax88 on Mar 11, 2010 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

I just think of how many times TJ

got stuffed behind the line, but would later make up for it by following Richardson and Faneca down the field for a 27 yard gain. It was kind if the same with LT, only he didn’t have a dominant O-Line to let him break a big one now and then. Without those two 70 yard rushes against Buffalo, his yards per carry for the season is down to 3.8. Now I’m not taking anything away from Jones, because those runs happened, but seeing as how he had never had a run that long in his career, and had two in one game, I’m going to say at least part of that was due to great blocking and awful run defense. They count, but they also easily could have not happened, only 2 plays out of 331 that accounted for a very big difference in overall yards per carry.

Let’s assume that the same thing happened for LT. The Jets had a better line, more committed to running the ball. Just for fun, let’s say that LT was given 250 carries, instead of 223. In 24 of those carries, he averages 3.5 YPC, but on the other 3, he happens to bust a 70 yarder, a 60 yarder, and a 50 yarder. All the sudden his numbers for the year are 250 carries for 994 yards and a 3.9 YPC instead of 3.3. Because of the team he played on and their style of offense, and the weak line, he didn’t get the opportunities to run for 2, run for 2, run for no gain, run for 3, run for 4, run for 3, and then bust a huge one like Jones did a couple of times.

Now, I can’t prove that he would have eventually broke any big runs, I can just point out what I did, and state my opinion, which is that I do think that running behind the Jets line, while he may have the same kind of 2, 3, 4 yard runs Jones did, eventually he will be able to find a hole and break a long run to make up for some of the 2,3, and 4 yarders.

I can’t see how you can reconcile being for TJ leaving and LD coming. Theyre the same guy. LD used to be special but has lost that explosiveness that made him great. Now he’s just an ordinary runner thats kind of athletic and can’t break tackles and is ALWAYS nicked up. At least TJ was durable.

by Crackback on Mar 11, 2010 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

I’m a little conflicted, but in the end I think I would have to agree with you on this one Crackback. I did not agree with the decision to let TJ go, so bringing in Tomlinson doesn’t make much sense to me. He’ll probably do okay with our line, but watching him get stuffed so many times in SD does not bode well for my confidence in him. I don’t like him as a goal line back. I’d like to see us go after Mike Bell (assuming his injury checks out) or a bruiser back like that.

by random122 on Mar 11, 2010 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

Great point random122, he doesn’t fit the mentality/idenity of the team (assuming we still have Leon). We’re supposed to be a ground and pound running team. LD was all about using his quick burst to blow by guys and reach the next level before other guys could get going. Only he can’t do that anymore. He’s never been a punisher, but always tried to avoid contact. And he’s always suffering with nagging injuries. In short, LD is a pussy. He doesn’t fit in with the hard-nose culture Rex is trying to create.

Ask yourselves this… Would Jim Leonard ever ride an exercise bike on the sideline, while in full gear, hoping he can feel good enough to play?
I don’t Jim Leonard personally, but i know that THAT guy is playing if he can get his pads on. If he can move, he’s gonna play. And i can say that about just about everybody on our team except for Greene. LD has proven on multiple occasions that he will sit out if he can. We don’t need Greene learning from LD.

by Crackback on Mar 11, 2010 7:46 PM EST up reply actions

Get ready to be a little bit annoyed Crack, because I really have a feeling that he won’t be leaving Florham tomorrow without a contract. He did well under Schotty, and the RB situation is up in the air, I’m not sure if I’m for or against, but I think we might have to come to terms with it when all is said and done.

I would have been fine bringing back TJ as a 3rd runner. I think LT is better.

Id feel a lot better about it if Leon left and we added another big back. LD as the main guy if Greene goes down makes me sick to my stomach.

by Crackback on Mar 11, 2010 8:42 PM EST up reply actions

I truly believe that LT can bring what Jones did.

I don’t think Jones had much left in the tank, but I think he had enough left to run very productively behind our offensive line. I feel the same way about LT, only I believe he brings more to the passing game. If worse comes to worst, and LT had to start a few games and get a lot of carries, I would be okay with it, just like I was okay with a questionable Thomas Jones running for all of 2009, because he is smart enough and behind a good enough line to be productive. I put LT in the same category, but I think he has something to prove, and I don’t believe the tank is empty.

Motivation Goes a Long Way

LT will be that.

He wants to win a ring, and he wants to go out with someone great. These two things are obvious.

Hate this.

I would rather draft a back. I would be more open to it if we lost Leon and we made LD our 3rd specialist, but even then im not crazy about it. The guy is shot. He used to be good bc he had a really good burst, but thats gone now.

by Crackback on Mar 11, 2010 12:11 PM EST reply actions

If we grabbed LD, we’d have our #1 RB in Greene who was riddled with injuries last year, LD hasn’t remained healthy in years and is a shell of his former self, and a scat back in Leon whose recovering from a snapped leg and who won’t be ready until the start of the season at best. No thanks. Rather not begin the season the Wheelchair Crew manning our backfield. Get me some fresh legs and someone that can take on the carries if (when) Greene decides he can’t tolerate the pain from knick-knack injuries.

by Crackback on Mar 11, 2010 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

This is one of our rare disagreements.

I like Ladainian. There isn’t any arguing that he is indeed a shell of what he was 4 years ago, but I think he at least has as much left as TJ. He ran behind a weak run blocking line last year and in an offense that was committed to throwing. You’re right, he doesn’t have the burst that he used to have anymore, but he still has great vision, and as a 3rd running back, I think he can still make a couple of big plays for us behind the O-Line. I also think the wisdom he imparts to Green, even to Leon could be invaluable. He was a great blocker and receiver, something he could hopefully teach Greene how to improve at. As long as we don’t have to rely on him for 200 carries I’m fine. To bring him him here to get a few reps, get 100 carries and catch 30 or 40 balls, but mostly bringing him in for the practice field and preparation, I’m cool with that.

From a Vikings beat reporter

Tomlinson just left winter park holding a Vikings jersey as he got in limo. He shook hands with a team official.

However Sports Illustrated just said:

SI_JimTrotter Just spoke to LT. Says he really liked what he heard from the vikes, but will visit the jets tomorrow.
