The Jets Announce Plan to Release Thomas Jones

The New York Jets have made an official announcement regarding RB Thomas Jones.  From the official team website:

"We have informed Thomas Jones and his representatives that we will release him on March 5," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a statement released by the club. "Thomas joined us three years ago and has been a productive, passionate leader both on and off the field who has served as a positive influence for our younger players. We were fortunate to acquire him and we wish him the best."

Jones, who will turn 32 on Aug. 19, enjoyed one of his best statistical campaigns in 2009. He not only ran for a career-high 1,402 yards but established a franchise record for rush touchdowns as his 14 broke the mark of 13 he set in ’08. His 210 yards on the ground in a Week 6 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills also set a Jets single-game mark and personal best.

"When I got here, Thomas immediately became one of my guys. He had one of his best years last season — might have been his best," said Jets head coach Rex Ryan. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a player and a person. As I said the other day, this is one of the tough decisions we had to make for our organization."

We all knew this was going to happen.  With the emergence of Shonn Greene and the best O-line in the league, TJ just got too expensive for Gang Green to keep.  He will definitely land somewhere else soon.  We wish him success, but hopefully not at our expense.

Wish him the best of luck on any non-AFC-East squad.

We will miss his consistency, and also leadership qualities for the young RB’s. Hope Tanny knows what he’s doing.

Best of luck

Unfortunately it’s a business first and foremost, but I think that we all wish nothing but the best for TJ. I also hope that he plays in another division next season.

Like Crackback said,

I only wish he is in another division next year because I want to be able to root for him, not because I’m scared of having to face him. I think our defense would rip Jones up. He did most of his damage last year because of our awesome line, I think people were a lot more scared of the Jets running game (meaning the whole unit involved in running the ball), not their running back. When you play the Titans, you are scared of Chris Johnson, and what he can do. You are scared he will make you miss, and explode to the endzone, because nobody is capable of catching him. When you play the Jets, you are scared that their O-Line and T-Rich are going to maul you, beat you up to the point where you just can’t stop anybody who has the ball. Out man you and punish you physically, you aren’t scared of Thomas Jones, per say.

Wrong Choice

This is the wrong choice jones and greene were the best 1 2 backs in the league and now all of this is gone.

by LostOnRevisIsland24 on Mar 1, 2010 6:12 PM EST reply actions

Meh.

Jones is old and slow. No agility, doesn’t break tackles. Thomas Jones season was a product of our offensive line.

Just to give you all an idea, Thomas Jones rushed for 4.2 yards per carry. Pretty good, nothing special at all. Wouldn’t such an amazing back have a better YPC then 4.2 with the best offensive line in the NFL? Just for fun, here are some guys with a minimum of 100 carries who had an equal or higher YPC then that…..

Shonn Greene -108 carries, 5.0 YPC
Willis McGahee -109 carries, 5.0 YPC
Justin Forsett -114 carries, 5.6 YPC
Felix Jones -116 carries, 5.9 YPC
Correll Buckhalter – 120 carries, 5.4 YPC
Michael Bush -123 carries, 4.8 YPC
Jason Snelling -142 carries, 4.3 YPC
Tim Hightower -143 carries, 4.2 YPC
Pierre Thomas – 147 carries, 5.4 YPC
Ronnie Brown -147 carries, 4.4 YPC
Ahmad Bradshaw -163 carries, 4.8 YPC
Beanie Wells -176 carries, 4.5 YPC
Michael Turner -178 carries, 4.9 YPC
Jamaal Charles -190 carries, 5.9 YPC
Jerome Harrison -194 carries, 4.4 YPC
Marion Barber -214 carries, 4.4 YPC
Deangelo Williams -216 carries, 5.2 YPC
Jonathon Stewart – 221 carries, 5.1 YPC
Frank Gore – 229 carries, 4.9 YPC
Fred Jackson -237 carries, 4.5 YPC
Ricky Williams -241carries, 4.7 YPC
Rashard Mendenhall – 242 carries, 4.6 YPC
Ray Rice – 245 carries, 5.3 YPC
Ryan Grant -282 carries, 4.4 YPC
Cedric Benson -301 carries, 4.2 YPC
Maurice Jones-Drew -312 carries, 4.5 YPC
Adrian Peterson -314 Carries, 4.4 YPC
Steven Jackson -324 carries, 4.4 YPC
Chris Johnson -358 carries, 5.6 YPC

Just to give you guys an idea, there were 29 running backs in the NFL this year, who had 100 carries or more and were able to average either the same yards per attempt as Jones, or more yards per attempt then Jones, who has the luxury of running behind the best O-Line in the league. I hate when it gets to a point where I have to seemingly trash guys like Jones here, but since it seems most of you are unable to separate your heart from your brain, it becomes necessary. I get that we love Jones, what I don’t get is that we made some big mistake by letting a clearly declining running back at the age of 32 walk after 1500 carries in the last 5 years (and in the 5 years before that, he only had about 750, half of that). Jones will probably start declining very soon, let him to to the Pats. I would rather face Jones then have to try to cover Faulk out of the backfield. Jones doesn’t intimidate anybody.

will c half trough the year when greene hits the wall from over use.

jones carried the team on his back that affects ypc.all them players u bring up were in 3 or 2 back systems.so there for fresh. if not a multi back system then very young. wax poetic all u want .

Hate to say it but… TJ was over-rated. He left a ton of yards on the field. Part of the reason he’s so durable and doesnt fumble is bc he falls upon phantom contact. He rarely fights for yards. Which is smart for the longevity of his career, but kind of selfish in a way too. I cant tell how many times ive seen him dive to the ground before getting hit.

by Crackback on Mar 1, 2010 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly.

Jones seems to run until he encounters another human being. At that point he goes down. It may be at the line of scrimmage, may be yards behind it, may be a 6, 12, or 26 yard gain, but when another person gets to him, he goes down.

3 mill.small price 2 pay to have 3 headed monster that could have been the best in the game

easly could have put up 2 1000 yrd rushers. you need all the backs you can get. in this the so called “ground and pound”.game.

If he goes to the Dolphins...

So help me…

2009 Dallas Cowboys: better than the Philadelphia Eagles

2009 New York Jets: my super early trendy Super Bowl XLV pick; oh yeah, also better than the Dolphins

2009-2010 Dallas Mavericks: 57-25 LOVING THE TRADE!

by Grady90 on Mar 1, 2010 7:07 PM EST reply actions

I would love that.

I would much rather face Thomas Jones then Ricky Williams or Ronnie Brown, who are both physical backs who both run harder then Jones does and break a lot more tackles.

We should have got rid of him Gohlston and Ellis last year

Both of them should have been gone since last year, both of the are washed up and Gholston might need a change we drafted him because we didnt want the Patriots to have him!!!

by bllackkman on Mar 1, 2010 10:15 PM EST reply actions

Ellis isn't washed up at all.

I would have understood cutting Jones last year, but I’m hardly complaining about the 1400 he gave us this year. Your complaints on Ellis are completely unwarranted.

The right move

Wish him the best of luck, but I think he’s verging on over the hill. If the Pats take him, go nuts. That’s all they need right now, another veteran players who is just not that great anymore. It’d be a Fred Taylor redux. If Leon’s back, and with a touch of Woodhead (DANNY WOODHEAD!) thrown in, we can let Greene work in slow enough.

I feel like there are other holes to fill with the picks. A change of pace, give-Shonn-a-rest back could be gotten for less than a 2nd or the money for TJ.

Again tho, Thanks for the ride.

How many times are you going to use the phrase was poetic?

I mean seriously? Why don’t you learn how to spell simple words and how to at least use a little bit of grammar.

Nrmax88, can you please stop going around attacking people, using demeaning remarks, talking down to people and generally being sarcastic. It doesn’t make you come off too well, we all know you are better than that.

Right, because Troy's

comments weren’t sarcastic. And sadly enough, I don’t think I am better then that.

Sorry,

you don’t have nearly the effect you would have to have on me in order for me to want to knock your teeth down your throat. I just disagree with you on TJ.
