Terrell Owens: Pursue or No?

One of the NFL's most controversial players is back on the market. Terrell Owens is a free agent once again. The 36 year old's production went down in 2009, 55 receptions, 829 yards, and 5 touchdowns. Then again, his quarterbacks were Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Those numbers don't look too bad. His 3 previous seasons with Dallas all ended with over 1,000 yards and at least 10 touchdowns.

There's no question T.O. is a talented guy. There's also no question he's a pain in the butt. He's a selfish guy who has destroyed locker rooms with selfishness. The thing that always concerned me is that he seems like a very intelligent guy. I always got the impression he knew what he was doing. The point was always to just drive attention to him, no matter how it hurt his team. The New York media and him seem like a toxic mix. I can just picture him complaining about splitting time with Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery or throwing his young quarterback under the bus for not getting him the ball enough (or Edwards after a drop).

The Jets just don't need this headache. Owens is a dynamic playmaker, not really a speed guy but gets open and is dangerous with the ball in his hands. His monster Super Bowl with the Eagles while playing hurt always gave me a respect for his big game skills even if I couldn't stand him personally. The need at receiver isn't big enough to roll the dice on him, though.

I vote do not pursue.

Who the HELL has voted yes

Oh my god I could not think of a worse move we could possibly make besides trading for Favre, good thing that never happened befo—

Yes

He didn’t cause any trouble in Buffalo as far as I know. He tends to be good for at least one season when he gets to a city.

I can see him having the same love/hate relationship with Rex Ryan that seemed to work out well in Philly with Andy Reid during their first season together.

He’s getting closer to retiring and if he wants to win the big one here’s a team that was a half away from making the Super Bowl.

Sign him for one year, you have nothing to lose, especially if your going all out for the Super Bowl this year.

Also, the Ravens are rumored to be interested in him, and given Flacco’s massive arm and that the Ravens are in our Conference, its another reason to sign him.

I think he can be good for one season, and that’s all we would need out of him. If he wants to win a Super Bowl, he signs with us. Sometimes you take chances with players who have issues and it does work out. Case in point, remember we basically signed Brian Cox out of retirement as no one wanted him. Also look at what trouble maker Moss has managed to do for New England.

Sometimes winning the big game is more important then always having the light on you. Owens played a season in Buffalo to show other teams that he isn’t a flat out cancer on a team. Buffalo’s problems weren’t anything to do with him and all about the inability of the Bills to either put him in the playbook or get a QB who can throw downfield.

One season, one chance for a championship for TO and the Jets. I can’t see the downside.

How about the part where he whispers in Sanchez's ear, all like...

“Hey… Throw the ball to me, I’m better than those other guys” and then he drops like half his passes and gets shoved by Revis to the ground (even though they’d be on the same team this time around) >_>

by Exystence on Mar 1, 2010 9:47 AM EST up reply actions

And remember that Revis called him a slouch too… There might be some controversy in the locker room right there!

by Exystence on Mar 1, 2010 9:51 AM EST up reply actions

Happens all the time. If Ochocinco was on the Jets and helped lead them to more wins during the regular season I’m sure he and Revis will be friendly.

by WebBard on Mar 1, 2010 9:55 AM EST up reply actions

Not the same

Revis and Johnson are friends, and Revis always has kind words for him in the press. Plus, I imagine Johnson is a much better influence in the clubhouse than Owens. He’s a clown, but you never hear anything about how he’s tearing his team apart.

by Exystence on Mar 1, 2010 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

Going by his History, the problem with TO is never the first season he’s on a team. Its when he’s been there for a few years. One year contract, problem solved. If he doesn’t want a 1 year, then let him walk.

by WebBard on Mar 1, 2010 10:12 AM EST up reply actions

He’s getting too old to be so patient I think… Either way, I doubt this is the place he’d want to land in any case. He probably wants to be on a team that actually throws the ball.

And thank goodness for that.

by Exystence on Mar 1, 2010 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

Too Old to be patient?

We’re a team that last season was 1 half from the Super Bowl. Unless he can sign with the Saints or Colts I doubt he’d have a better chance of winning the SB then with us.

Wow. How is this even close? Absolutely no here. He is a QB cancer and a distraction, something a 2nd year QB does NOT need.

by jets47 on Mar 1, 2010 10:15 AM EST reply actions

I don't know. Jeff Garcia, Tony Romo and Donovan McNabb all seem fine.

Before coming to Buffalo, TO spent a looooooooonggggggggggg time on winning teams. Dallas had no Bart Scott to check Owens. Neither did Philly. Damien Woody, Tony Richardson (assuming he’s back), and Bart Scott will take TO behind the woodshed and fuck him up if he gets up to no good. On a one year deal without much guaranteed sign me up. I know it probably isn’t popular, but TO is still among the top 10 WR’s in football. I’ll take him.

True, I remember hearing he got into a shoving match with

Hugh Douglas, but Douglas was old and washed up at the time, and yeah TO was a piece of shit with the Eagles, but he was also a damn good player and he got them to the superbowl, which they haven’t done since and couldn’t do before. The guy is a tremendously good player, bring him in with the idea that if he acts up he is gone. No downside.

He can’t be trusted. He can’t help himself. Think of all the media. ESPN right in Bristol, all the TV stations like SNY (now that he’s done TV work offers will be made), two major sports radio stations, all the papers. He’ll lose his shit. He’ll OD on all the coverage.

Actually.. on second thought… it might actually have the opposite effect. He might actually achieve some kind of fulfillment… a cathartic release. He might actually tone it down bc he won’t have to seek the spot-llight anymore, but will rather be unable to escape it.

by Crackback on Mar 2, 2010 1:39 AM EST up reply actions

I completely understand,

why you, or anybody else would say no way.

I just feel like we have a coach, and locker room that are all very close, and I don’t see one guy, even TO coming in there and messing anything up. Honestly, what I picture if TO were to start any trouble whatsoever is like a scene out of the replacements where they all just surround Martel at halftime and threaten to kick his ass if he doesn’t get the hell out. I feel like Rex Ryan has built up such a good clubhouse and a feeling of brotherhood in here that nothing will fuck that up, and this is just a chance to add a freak to our offense.

There may be some guys that think they are hard, but I think Bart Scott will absolutely check TO if need be. This is the mad backer, the guy who wants to hurt people. Again, I understand where you and everyone else are coming from, I just think our locker room and team unity are strong enough to go for it.

I have no idea what I was thinking when I typed that.

But seriously I dont think it would be a terrible idea to get him.

by Bob_The_Friendly_Baker on Mar 1, 2010 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

Unless he's willing to work for peanuts there's no good reason

and even then I’m highly reluctant.

The guy demands the ball but it too old to get effectively open on a consistent basis. Too much trouble without even beginning to consider whether or not he’ll run his mouth or be a distraction, which is far too high a possibility.

by Bro Namath on Mar 1, 2010 6:45 PM EST reply actions

I know this won't be popular, but give me TO.

Yeah, he was out of control in Philly, since then, he has been okay. Annoying at times, but who cares. The guy is a freak athletically and one of the best wideouts ever. I love him. I love football players. I want talent. This guy is so good it is absurd. Also, do you really think Bart Scott, Damien Woody and company are going to let TO get away with any shenanigans? Who was the leader in Dallas to keep TO in check? Philly? I think he is a weird guy who says some occasionally stupid shit, but after the Philly debacle, which was all on him, everything he says/does is overblown like WOAH. This dude is so good. Soooo good. He wants a ring. I would take him. Bart Scott will check him.

I mean, this guy is a lock

for 60 catches, 1000 yards, mark it down, every single year. He says stupid stuff, but he brings it on the field, I mean, he had 830 yards this year for a simply atrocious Bills team. Before coming to Buffalo, TO had 1000 yards in 9 out of 11 seasons. One season he didn’t was 2005, when he had 760 yards in 7 games and then got horse collared and lost the rest of the season. The other was as a 26 year old in 1999, when he got 750 yards. He is simply a machine. He literally cannot be covered by one man, having him outside with Edwards on the other side with Cotch working the slot is something amazing to think about. I don’t think TO will start any trouble, if he does he will probably not get another shot in the league, plus he is 35 now, he just wants a ring, but he is still productive, for now, so think he is done messing around.

WHAT??????

Are you nuts. We already have an athletically gifted, prima donna WR that can’t catch. Now you want two?? You want Sanchez to have to deal with the two of them? Are you insane. Nobody… NOBODY checks T.O. Nobody. TO in NY is like a flame-thrower in room packed with dynamite. You know he just wouldnt be able to help himself. He’s gettin too old anyhow. We got our TO already. BE is our TO. And i dont care where he goes bc Revis owns him.

by Crackback on Mar 2, 2010 1:19 AM EST reply actions

Braylond Edwards doesn't have out 9 of 10

1000 yard WR’s. Yeah yeah yeah drops, I don’t care, I’ll take some drops with a 1000 yard guy. How do you know nobody can check TO? Nobody has ever tried? They all just talk about him after he leaves, nobody has ever been man enough to get in his face, tell him to shut the fuck up and play. If he acts up, then you cut him, on the spot if need be. I don’t see a downside. I don’t think even Revis would be able to handle TO if Owens had a real QB throwing too him. He has breakaway speed and he is as physical as a tight end. Yup, I’ll take a flier.

Im sure theres a reason nobody has tried to check after all these years. Or maybe they have and got quietly embarassed in the lockerroom. Listen nobody doubts his ability, but c’mon. He’s a team-wrecker. He’s divided every locker-room he’s been in except Buffalo. And he would have divided Buffalo’s but they were just too bad for anybody to care. TO is done. No way I want that guy in NY with this media. It might kill him.

by Crackback on Mar 2, 2010 1:31 AM EST up reply actions

He's done?

I think that is a questionable assertion at best. He is coming off 800 yards with a crummy team in the worst place to be a QB/WR in the league because of the massive winds. I don’t know that he tore Dallas apart, he might have said some stupid shit but so what? Tony Romo thrived under TO. As others have said, he hasn’t been a problem anywhere in his first year, it usually takes longer. I know I won’t convince anybody, but nobody will convince me either. Despite TO and his antics, he has been on playoff teams that weren’t going to the playoffs before he got there. He is a stud, and he can’t be covered. I’ll take him. Again, if he starts acting up, you cut him, and who is going to realistically sign him if he joined the Jets and was cut because of bad behavior. If he wants to win a ring so bad like he says, perfect chance to prove it.

Randy Moss worked out when he ended up on New England. Now, you will probably say that Randy Moss never publicly dogged his QB’s, which may be true, but what he did do was take plays, games, years at a time off when he didn’t feel like playing. TO plays his ass off, and he is one of the best run blocking WR’s in the game, again, I feel like there is no downside here. As soon as he says something even a little bit controversial, you bring him in and tell him next time he says one wrong thing he is done. Or, you just tell him when he signs that he is on a one strike policy, one mistake and your out. If he isn’t comfortable with that fine, but if he were to agree to our terms I would sign him up in a second.

"Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring; besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic."

by nrmax88 on Mar 2, 2010 1:39 AM EST up reply actions

But NE had an established tradition and a QB that eclipsed even Moss’ talent. TO isnt stupid though. He knows all he has to do is have one good game and he’s in total control. Id rather make a run at V Jackson or somebody else. TO is just too risky. Too much baggage. Too much crying out for attention.

by Crackback on Mar 2, 2010 1:44 AM EST reply actions

I honestly don't care at all how much he can help the team

I just hate him as a person. He’s the least respectable elite athlete in the world by my estimation. How could anybody want such an unlikable person on their favorite team? It’d be like Brett Favre x 1208373842394.

And as far as obsession with the media… I hope the two of you who want TO aren’t guys who have cried out against Kerry Rhodes.

by Exystence on Mar 2, 2010 9:05 AM EST reply actions

TO is a first ballot sure fire hall of famer.

Kerry Rhodes is marginal pro. What kind of comparison is that? And honestly, I don’t let myself get swayed by silly things like whether I like a guy or not. It’s not like I have to go to his house for dinner. Neither do you. He is going to play football, not baby sit your children. Kerry Rhodes and TO comparison? Wow, talk about a stretch.

I'm not talking about playing ability, buddy

I’m talking about propensity to seek attention in the media and all that. Terrell Owens joined a friggin modelling agency, he’s had his own reality show, and he was on that other crappy game show. And like, Tony Romo’s his teammate man, that’s his quarterback! :‘( And there was that whole “non-attempted suicide” controversy. And the beef with Donovan McNabb. There’s something seriously wrong with that dude, all of that crying out for attention.

Whatever, you might not care about a guy’s personality but I’m sure a lot of people would disagree with you. I don’t believe in selling the soul of my favorite team for the chance of getting probably marginally better in one area by signing a douchebag.

And what do you think, even assuming he’s on his best behavior do you STILL think that he’s not going to be a major distraction? He’s going to have the most ruthless local media in the country egging him on at every single opportunity. The only upside I could possibly see to him coming to the team is that at least Kerry will have a friend in the locker room now.
