I can't believe we missed this!!!
Since everyone was obsessing about the whole Rex Ryan one-finger salute and the consequent fine, no one picked up on the TRUE story, that of why Coach was down at the MMA event with Jay Glazer in the first place. If you listen to the audio clip on WFAN's Boomer and Carton show (courtesy of jetstwit.com), you'll hear Glazer drop a HUGE hint as to what the Jets are planning to do with our favorite underperforming LB, Vernon Gholston.
"So [Ryan] wanted to get involved in those talks and he wants to send a bunch of the Jets out there - I know Gholston he wants to send..."
So it would appear as though the NYJFO wants to give #50 one final chance to prove his mettle for the 2010 season, a fact also corroborated by GM Tannenbaum's comments and general tenor about Gholston in the end-of-season presser he gave a week ago.
The only reason I bring this up is to try to narrow the focus of the 1st round pick away from DTs and LBs and focus solely on CBs (I'll put it at 95% that we'll go that route). Ryan and crew will move forward with Scott, Harris, Gholston, Pace, and Thomas as their primary LBs, and with Ellis and Jenkins getting back to prime form for the beginning of the season, I think that most of our bigtime offseason acquisitions will be in the back 4 (see numerous CB scouting reports on revisisland.com, GGN, jets blog, etc.).

It doesn't follow
That quote you mentioned is incomplete. Send a bunch of Jets out where? Could mean that he wants to send Gholston to another team, or that he wants to send him to some sort of additional workout or early offseason training camp or something similar.
Tannenbaum’s comments showed something. This doesn’t.
Actually, on the Showtime interview where Ryan told Miami fans we’ll beat them twice next year, he first mentioned sending a few Jets players to train with Jay Glazer and some other guy (forget the name). If you remember last year during his suspension, Calvin Pace tried to stay in shape by training in MMA.

Clarification
Glazer’s MMA training facilities are in Miami and he’s previously trained Jared Allen, Matt Leinart, and Patrick Willis, among others. Glazer was the one that said that Ryan was looking to send Gholston to train at an MMA facility in the offseason, if that wasn’t already clear.
All I’m saying is that the move is indicative of the fact that the Jets are not yet giving up on Gholston and will (definitely) keep him on for the 2010 season in the hopes that his training will help him overcome whatever barriers he needs to overcome (whether it’s mental, physical, “passion”, or otherwise) to be the dominant pass rusher that we drafted him to be.

Last resort
From the quote, it almost seemed like it meant he thought Gholston should switch from football to mixed martial arts. Yes, the training could improve Gholston, but it give me a feeling of “if even this won’t work, nothing will”
Allen, Leinart, and Willis? 2 out of 3 isn’t bad.
I completely agree
at least they’re pulling out all the stops before they give up on him, huh?

Hey, if dancing worked for Al Toon
Seriously, Toon gave a lot of credit to college courses he took in jazz dance and (ready for this one???) ballet in improving his bodily flexibility and the quality of his play on the field.
Don't forget about Lynn Swann
the legendary Steelers wideout who also took ballet lessons

Gholston
Forget this guy. He has no passion for the game. The Jets should look to draft a pass rushing DE, who can consistently pressure the qb, and, that will free up our db’s for coverage ability.
Even though a pass rushing 3-4 DE is basically an oxymoron?
Why does nobody get this. There is no such thing as a pass rushing 3-4 DE. You don’t want a DE in a 3-4 to be a pass rusher. You want them to be primarily a run stopping big body and you wantr the OLB to rush the passer. Why can’t people grasp this simple concept. Pick any stud 3-4 DE you want, none of them make their living rushing the passer. Even Ngata and Seymour, who are 2 of the best (although now Seymour is in a 4-3) never sacked the QB very much.
"Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring; besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic."

Deadline?
Is there a deadline as to when a team has to announce that they’re cutting a player? Specifically, I’m trying to figure out the timeframe that the Jets have with Gholston. I read somewhere that some other teams were very recently parting ways with some of their players.. ‘just wanted to know if there’s a hard deadline on that.

There's no deadline for releasing a player from contract
but often teams do it before certain dates, often in March or June, to avoid paying out large roster bonuses to players. It usually depends on whether or not they’ll lose more money releasing them but when there’s no cap penalty you’ll see them er on the side of releasing the player more often.
A lot of times there’s wide speculation surrounding players expected to be released before a roster or signing bonus is due.
He's already in great shape
Training has to be on his heart and desire!!
