NFL to Change Playoff Overtime Rule?
The NFL is reportedly considering changing its rules for overtime in the Playoffs.
Under the new format, both teams would get the ball at least once unless the first team to get the ball scores a touchdown, Greg Aiello said. If the first team to get the ball makes a field goal and the other team ties the game, action would continue until a team scores again.
Under the current rules, the first team to score wins.
I'm not the biggest fan of sudden death, but it seems to me this proposal offers a lot of the same problems. After the first series, it becomes sudden death again. A team can still win the game without the other side touching it. One team still will get to touch it more than the other.
I say just have a pair of 7:30 periods. The team with the most points after the two periods wins.

Overtime? Why?
In many sports there are no winners, and teams get to “share the points” for a tie like in soccer. Understanding that ties are almost un-American, I still see nothing wrong with it, and it is way preferable to the current coin-toss system we have now. My thinking is that both teams have ample opportunities to win in the allotted time, so why not have a system where neither teams “win”. I know that isn’t the most popular, but given the current length of the game, it seems fair.
In absence of that, John, I like your idea over most of the others and certanly more than the rules we have now.
American football has ties, only baseball and basketball usually dont but there are provisions for it to happen. Just in the 2008 season there was a tie made famous by Donovan McNabb’s ignorance of the rules.
Ties are not Un-American they are just bad for business and pro sports are all about business.
In the amateur levels (College is not exactly amateur, they make millions) they have tons of ties, there is a school of thought that wants all kid’s games to be ties.

If ties are bad for business then how is soccer the most profitable sport on the planey but yet has ties all the time. It’s not bad for business at all.

Soccer is the biggest sport in the world, but
it is not close to that in America. There is a group of people who like Soccer, but not even close to the fanbases of the NBA, NFL, or MLB.

I’m not a fan of sudden death for football either. I like the college overtime rules, but this would be a step in the right direction.
I’m not a big fan of the college OT. It’s totally different from the regular flow of the game. Plus kickers are so good in the NFL that games would never end using the college system.

Good point. I still think this change would be better than leaving it as is though. Sure, the regular flow of the game is disrupted, but I view it kind of like the nfl’s version of a hockey shootout (more like a step in this direction). Granted, I don’t watch the NHL, but I did enjoy the shootouts from Disney’s The Mighty Ducks!
I say leave it the way it is. A little built in controversy is good for the sport. Drums up interest. Yeah it would suck to lose in OT without touching the ball, but it would also be great to win without the other side touching the ball. If you don’t like it, win in regulation.
I think the best proposal I've heard is the "+4" system
As in, first to score 4 points in overtime wins. That way, you don’t get to just win by winning a coin toss, returning the kick, getting two first downs and hitting a cheap FG to win. On top of that, I say we should get rid of the coin toss and just give the ball to the home team to start OT off. That’s a true home-field advantage right there, and it’s fair because both teams have equal opportunities to have the ball in OT throughout the year, and it might cause some away teams to go for the win instead of the tie in regulation thus reducing the amount of OT games in general.
Just have another quarter which is 12 minutes long.
Every team gets two timeouts, one challenge and a two minute warning.

That sounds fine. The thing I hate is when the normal flow of the game is disrupted, which happens in the current system. Teams play for field goals, which you’d never see 5 minutes into the fourth quarter. A system like basketball where they play a whole period is my favorite approach.

Give each team a drive
And if it’s still tied after that (FG by each, TD by each), make it sudden death.
Also, allow the option of 2-point conversions, with the quirk that if one team scores a TD and kicks an extra point, going up by 7, and the other team also scores a TD, the second team to score HAS to go for 2, therefore must win or lose.
