Thomas Jones To Be Released

It is a sad day for Jets fans. Thomas Jones, our workhorse RB for the last few years, is to be released.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter's Twitter page, Thomas Jones will NOT be restructuring his contract  and will be a free agent come March 5.

Adam_Schefter

Filed to ESPN: Thomas Jones will not be restructuring his contract with Jets + will be released this week. He'll be a free agent March 5th.

Personally, I loved Jones. I loved his work ethic, and I loved his vision --- he hit holes as well as any back in the NFL. I also admired his consistency, he NEVER fumbled, and was excellent in the red zone.

But he's taken a lot of hits, being the RB1 both here in NY and in Chicago. As a result, he's lost a couple of steps. The Jets are looking to the future with RB's Shonn Greene and Leon Washington here. Although, it's a shame we had to release him and couldn't get anything in return.

We will miss you, sir. Thanks for your service and consistency week in, week out.

I know Adam Schefter is considered the ultimate insider. Is there any chance he’s wrong?

TJ’s impact will be missed, and he does lead the franchise in certain categories.

Most rushing TDs in a season (franchise history).

Well…
Why release him and get nothing or just have a solid backup? He’s a team player.

Kind of frsutrating

being that we’re apparently keeping Gholston but I understand the football-business nature of things and wouldn’t mind the change before TJ becomes too old. Maybe even pour the cash into the defense wink wink nod nod.

Still, seems to me we could have tried to include him in some sort of trade package. He looked good in his tenure with the Jets and I wouldn’t have been surprised if someone bit with at least a low level draft pcik for him alone.

As disappointing as getting nothing for a fairly productive back will be I can live with the change.

It would have been very difficult to get a team to give up something for a back of his age looking for a new contract, particularly when the Jets clearly were going to cut him instead of paying his bonus.

A. They don’t really have a quality back.
B. He’d be a great presence in their locker room.
C. Belichick loves sticking it to the Jets.
D. TJ’s probably in search of a ring and wants to go to a contender.
E. It would give him a shot at getting revenge.

Did I miss anything?

Honestly let them. TJ doesn’t scare me at all. He’s not much without a great o-line. Doesnt make many guys miss, doesnt break tackles, not very fast. He has good vision and doesnt fumble, but he doesnt really put any pressure on defenses. And towards the end of the season you could really see that Greene was just in a different league. No way you pay that kind of money to TJ to be a back-up.

And if we’re going to be honest, this was inevitable from the moment they traded up for Greene.

Which of course in Jets language means, he will go to the Patriots, have a 1000+ yard 10+ TD season, he will have a 100+ yard 2TD game against the Jets which eliminated us from post season contention.

Perfectly said. I was going to say basically the same thing, but I don’t have a lot more to add. NE’s line is suspect and Jones would look more like LT of last year then Thomas Jones of last year if he went to the Pats. Plus he would have to share carries with Faulk, Maroney, BJGE, Morris and whoever the hell else they have back there.

The Pats will never be a run first team. Thats why they are never concerned about finding a every down back.

Not sure LT would be any worse. If we signed him on a one year deal he wouldnt hold out for a new contract. He wouldnt get a ton of carries. He may have something to offer in the post season.

by jets47 on Feb 27, 2010 9:45 PM EST up reply actions

LT would be much worse

If our front office signed him they should go in the Hall of Shame for stupidity.

LT is completely done for, out of gas, on the outs, toast. The only reason to sign him is to sell jerseys.
TJ – on the paranoid idea that he might be done for coming off his best season ever, is going to get cut because he wouldn’t take a pay cut after almost single-handedly carrying our offense.
If Greene gets hurt or starts fumbling again, and Leon is not effective (keep in mind that he was never considered a 20 carry per game back) I will be banging my head against the wall.

by Rabbit T on Feb 28, 2010 6:20 AM EST up reply actions

I doubt we’d do much until he shows he’s still got his elusiveness and speed, then we would start contract talks. What do you think the odds are of us picking up a veteran vs drafting another back?

He can be a third back and add some depth…plus, great mentor for Greene

I definitely agree with this.

If he is serious about wanting to win a championship, come play for us, get maybe 10 touches a game. Help Greene learn to be a well rounded back, and I think LT has more left then we saw in SD, especially with the way our offensive line tends to dominate people.

But as I have said here before, I thought it was time to go. He did have great vision and the ability to run behind his line, but he was getting up there, and he was starting to lose some quickness and power. I will always love Thomas, and I appreciate everything he did for the Jets, and in my heard, I ’m sad, but this was the right move in my opinion, better a year to early then a year too late, like the saying goes. Good luck in the future TJ, and thanks for the memories.

TJ's release will allow the JETS to sign an UFA

Thomas Jones was great as a Jet, so it’s sad to see him released. If he signs elsewhere, then the Jets can sign a UFA at the same salary level. At TJ’s age, he’s not going to be looking for a backloaded contract, so his 1st year number will be pretty good. My guess is that the plan is for Cleveland to sign him to a ridiculous deal so we can sign Peppers.

by bomberjet on Feb 28, 2010 9:21 AM EST reply actions

NFL contracts and player value.

This is an example of the NFL contracts. Even though the player is signed, there often are no guarantees. In this case, it would tend to favor the Jets.

But at some point, a player needs to take a serious look in the mirror and decide if his role with the team is equal to (or can surpass) the non-guaranteed amount.

It isn’t that the Jets don’t want him, it’s that for $5 million there isn’t the likelihood of him being worth that amount of money. So does Thomas Jones really think he’s worth/ will command that salary from another team or does he consent to restructure, and how severe is the restructure?

I will miss him and thank him for his play with the Jets, but while it’s a game it’s a business. And if he signs with a team with a less than stellar front line to protect him (as the Jets have), his next season might be injury riddled and cut short.

I agree that he busted his ass for the Jets and his career is relatively short-lived, but isn’t that the nature of the beast? Anyone add up the dollars he’s been paid in the NFL thus far.

I wish him all the best (unless he signs with New England)!

by oldskooljet on Feb 28, 2010 10:51 AM EST reply actions

Why is everyone so upset?

Let me say this to begin: I loved Jones as much as the rest of you. For the last few years he has been a rock, with consistent yards and never putting the ball on the ground.

Now, let me explain why letting go of him makes sense.
1) Obviously there is the money factor, less money on him means more money elsewhere.
2) Greene and Washington are PERFECT compliments of each other. We have Greene, who demonstrated great power back ability, plus he has a burst of speed. Leon has huge play-making ability and quickness. (Who remembers TJ Duckett and Warrick Dunn? falcons)
3) I’m sorry to disappoint some people, but I have a criticism of Jones. This last season (and a bit of the season before this) I noticed something that troubled me immensely about the way he runs. He gets the ball, runs up to the line, STOPS, and looks for a hole. Yes, sometimes he hit a hole for a long run. But more often then not, he got stuffed right at the line. The main thing I liked about Shonn Greene, he bursts through the line if there isnt a hole, and with his great power, he can make it though fairly often.

I see Jones playing for the Chargers, and best of luck to him. As for the Jets, their ground attack will not suffer from this. The combination of Greene and Washington will be effective, and the best part, they are young! If this combo works out, the Jets (with the right amount of $$) can keep it in tact for years!

ok, say leon is never the same...

Jones wouldn’t be the answer to that problem. Jones isnt a fast, agile back. We already have a great young power back in Greene (and also his name fits in perfectly with the same). If we wanted to replace Washington, Sproles would be a good answer.

Also, Chauncey is another Power Back, and would not be a replacement for Leon if one were necessary. Not to mention, we can’t really have 2 futures. So im sticking with Greene taking over and Chauncey sitting in 3rd string again
