Feely on the Outs
This article citing Mike Tannenbaum says Jay Feely is probably gone.
Tannenbaum did not sound as if pending free agent kicker Jay Feely would be back after the Jets recently signed former Cowboys Pro Bowl pick Nick Folk.
Now I will encourage you to take this with a grain of salt. There are no direct quotes here. The top of the article says Tannenbaum suggested Thomas Jones is on the way out when he said absolutely nothing to that effect in the cited quote. This kicker news still seems logical.
I know there's a lot of anger over this. I'm not necessarily thrilled to see Feely go, but let's not go overboard. He's not Adam Vinateri in his prime.
I think Folk could work out. The guy was a Pro Bowler back in 2007. I was chatting with Dave Halprin of Blogging the Boys the other night, and he told me Folk had hip surgery less than a year ago. Maybe it was still bothering when he kicked so poorly for the Cowboys a year ago. Maybe it will heal. Maybe a new team and a fresh start will do him good. Also remember letting Feely sign somewhere else will free up a spot for the Jets to sign an unrestricted free agent from another team at an equal or lesser salary. After the way Sebastian Janikowski blew up the kicker market, that could end up being a decent chunk of change.
While I am hoping for good things with Folk, I would have a big problem if the Jets just handed him the job. He is coming off an awful season. I hope the Jets look through the CFL, UFL, and colleges to find ample competition.

Que bunch of people
angrily calling for Tannenbaums job and spelling the downfall of the 2010 Jets.

Worst fear came to fruitiion
Horrible.
This is a very bad thing for Jets fans. EVERY TIME Folk lines up to kick, even a simple XP or what “should be” a chip shot, I will be nervous of him shanking it.
O/U of number of heart attacks we will get any time he comes up in a clutch situation this year? Throw his stats out, the guy couldn’tt make a kick to save a life with the game on the line. His confidence is shot.

and this is assuming, obviously, that Feely really IS on the way out.
It just seems that way unfortunately if you look at how the events have un-folded.
Jets talk to Folk, next day (I believe it was) — Jets sign Folk. Feely’s agent is suddenly upset, and probably doesn’t feel Feely should have to “compete” for a job he already secured last season. And understandably so.
I almost always agree w/ Tanny, but not here. We had to be difficult trying to spur up competition for the job, couldn’t just do the easy thing. Feely is as consistent as they come, and he can TACKLE. He also has strong character and is a leader for the younger guys. If we lose him, IMO, HUGE loss
I really hope Tanny can work something out, but I think we lost him. And it sting, we will miss him.

Matt, you make it sound like Feely was
lights out before he got here. He wasn’t. This is what kickers do. They get hot and cold. They have great seasons. They want money. Then they have bad season. They are like relief pitchers. I like Feely, but if he wanted a shitload of money then I am fine with this, and it also opens up a spot to sign a free agent, even if it isn’t a premiere one. I liked Feely too, but this is just the way the kicking market works. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Feely go 19-28 next year. Feely is as consistent as they come. Until he misses 7 out of 11 like Folk did. Folk was more consistent then Feely was up until he had a rough 6 weeks(by the way, at the age of 28, Feely was under 80 percent for his career, Nick Folk, at age 25, is sitting at 80 percent career, coming off the 4-11 and everything), but you don’t care about the stats, so we will just throw them out.
Feely is good, but stop acting like a drama queen. It is just a kicker. He is more or less and average kicker coming off one really good year. But actually, maybe I just feel like throwing all those stats out the window because he was 1-3 vs NE so the stats don’t matter and he is obviously shot. See, I can play that game too. I like him too, but get over it. Mike Nugent was coming off of a 89 percent year and an 80 percent year when he was replaced by Feely in the first place, and look how that turned out.
Folk is a good kicker, I understand you may prefer Feely, but Folk can kick, regardless of what completely important stats you decide to discard for no other reason then to support your argument.

Folk can kick....for another team.
nrmax88-when you say that he’s just a kicker, I think of the current Rex Ryan offensive schemes and how they games often would be decided by field goals. You’re right when you say that kickers get hot and cold, and it’s often difficult to maintain a level of consistency for very long.
Going beyond the statistics and putting costs aside, Folk has missed critical kicks in critical situations in the past. The Redskins thought they had their kicking problems solved last season with Suisham, but he missed what was considered to be a “chip shot” and he cost them the game. He was cut the following week, yet percentage-wise he was in the above 80% range in the past couple of seasons.
But Feely hadn’t regressed to that point, and either kept the Jets competitive in games or won them outright. He was a go-to player. And when there was “drama” in the Meadowlands last season, I felt good that he was our kicker. I can’t say that about Folk. Feely was also a good all-around athlete, making tackles and was even able to punt in an emergency. Seems like a “Rex” guy to me.
I understand the competitive nature of the game. But what I don’t understand is what the Jets achieve here, and I can’t see how this is an upgrade.

I like Feeley. He's a football player who kicks.
But apparently Folk had a glitch in his technique that he fixed (stayed hunched over in his approach) and he’s now back to his former self, booming kick-offs and all. Hate to see Feeley go, but if Folk is fixed and is that much cheaper, gotta do what you gotta do.
GIANT fan . i have seen this guy on more then 1 occasion.
the problem is its in his head as well as his hip. trust me if he was worth haven a nfc east team would have got him, and there a couple that need kickers. his #s dont add up, he was sick his rookie year. i have seen this guy mis the easiest of kicks. and most important. im a GIANT fan ask me if i miss feely…

nick folk as kicker
even though they just signed nick folk as kicker…and feeley possibly on they way out, they should look for a backup to support Folk with his nasty past season…for me i say sign Travis Atter, kicker out of Chadron State. He had pro-potential numbers this past season and set pretty much every school kicking record they had, including 5 alone his FRESHMAN year…the Jets currently have a Chadron State player on their roster Danny Woodhead and Travis Atter has the same work ethic he does if not better. With both being from small schools in D2 they were overlooked but Danny already has proven the haters wrong. I say sign another Chadron State player and you won’t be disappointed!

Feely on the outs, TJ to be cut...
Any good or at least less stupid news available?
The way this is going, it seems like Cotchery will be shopped next.
You want a tissue?
We lost a kicker who obviously wanted more money then we are comfortable playing him, and we cut a real old and slowing down running back, just like anybody else would have done. This happens in football, there is no reason to cry about it. Yeah, we cut Jones. He is being replaced by somebody younger and better. It is what happens in this league. Keeping him here would have just stunted Shonn Greeene’s growth.

No, I want a winning team
And that means you don’t get rid of your most solid players unless you have a solid plan in place to replace their production.
I like Greene’s playing style, but just when it seemed he had a lock on being the Back of the Future he got hurt at a crucial moment. So I’m not convinced that he and Leon, between them, can cover the same load that he and TJ did in total this last year. Obviously, if that did happen, I’d be very happy. Now there’s one more need to address through the draft when we have a shortage of picks.
In our offense,
the running back position isn’t as important as the offensive line. The RB is almost replaceable. You have the best O-Line in the league, good backs become great, as we saw with Thomas Jones this year. How much of Thomas Jones rushing was right through gaping holes made by the offensive line, and then exploded through by Tony Richardson? You’ll see next year, when Greene/whoever goes easily over 1000 yards.
