Marques Douglas: Stay or Go?
The Jets have a decision to make on starting defensive end Marques Douglas. The team originally signed Douglas a year ago to provide depth. He stepped into a starting role when Kenyon Coleman went to Cleveland in the Mark Sanchez trade.
I felt like the 32 year old was one of the unsung heroes of the defense. For starters, he came with Rex from Baltimore and was kind of a coach on the field helping to teach the new scheme. Defensive linemen usually get noticed for their sacks. Douglas isn't much of a pass rusher. He is excellent holding the point of attack and playing the run, though, registering 64 tackles, which makes him a valuable two down 3-4 player.
I would love to see Douglas back in green and white next year. The Jets could let him walk as an unrestricted free agent and gain an extra free agent spot to use. The problem is that would create a hole. Douglas isn't a spare part. The team would be forced to make another move to replace him.
I want him back for another year. I vote stay.

When Rex Ryan came to New York, he brought a player from Baltimore at each level of the defense.
He brought Jim Leonhard to help with the secondary.
He brought Bart Scott to help with the linebackers.
and…
He brought Marques Douglas to help with the Defensive line.
I hope he gets inked in – for three more years – he is a great situational player and mixed in with a Travis LaBoy or a defensive linemen / pass rusher would be so much fun to watch. He was an undrafted free agent (like Scott and Leonhard), and I believe he is a key to help defend against the run.
Can’t forget to mention, he does have that beautiful fumble recovery for a TD against the Colts which reminiscing about.. makes me smile.

Voted yes, but...
If we take Odrick with #29 Douglas becomes expendable.
I don’t know.
I think if LaBoy is healthy enough and looks good still, take a shot on him and sign him for a contract with extendable option.
Then find that cornerback to match up with Revis, if the Jets do trade down 10 picks to pick Devin McCourty at a more reasonable spot,
I could see them getting a couple picks, and developing more with late round receivers and linemen.
I do have faith that Ryan will find the guy that fits spots on defense.
Out of what’s come in Ryan’s defense, I highly doubt to see busts like Gholston on defense.
Maybe offensive busts..but defense, for a guy like Ryan, I don’t see busts arriving at the doorstep with the NYJ

LaBoy wouldn’t really be a replacement for Douglas. LaBoy is a pass rusher, a 4-3 end/3-4 OLB.. Douglas is a space eater who plays the run, a 4-3 tackle/3-4 end.

I was not considering LaBoy as a replacement, more as the situational switch-off with Douglas.
Tag-Team. more or less.
Rex does sub a lot in game and tries to get all his players in action.

Douglas is too valuable to let go, and I completely agree with John when he says that Douglas was an unsung hero. You won’t hear his name a great deal, and he wont feature on too any highlight packages but he holds the point, he forces the play into an area of strength with the linebackers, and he is a decent tackler. Like a lot of people have been saying over the past month, 3-4 DE’s are not flashy, they hold the point, take up blocks and allow the linebackers to go to work. That is exactly what Douglas does, way too valuable to let go even if we go with a DE with the first pick.

We need to sign him for two-three years, so there isn’t this dilemma next year.

If we plan to groom a defensive end in 2010 then would get him back on a one year deal, just to see how it plays out, he is about to turn 33, so a one year deal probably is best for flexibility, potentially a two year deal, but wouldn’t go longer than that.

I’d love the contract option for two years.
But yes, I know what you mean with age and all.
The DLine is pretty old, and pretty underrated. I’d prefer if the Jets could lock d-linemen this year in the 2nd and 3rd round, but I feel the first position needed to be drafted is Corner.

But if we grab Odrick, we could use Pouha at nose and Jenkins at DE in early downs, then bring in Odrick on passing downs. I’d like Douglas back, but he’s not an absolute necessity.
It is a necessity, the Jets don’t have Odrick -yet.
If they get him , he becomes expendable, but I’d prefer to have LaBoy-Douglas (tag team),
and go for a corner with the first round pick.

I just don’t trust Jenkins to stay healthy, if we did lose him, then we would have Pouha at the nose and a rookie at the end with little cover apart from a Mike DeVito. I agree it’s not absolutely essential, but it would make sense to bring him back even if we do go D-line with 29.

DeVito looked solid.
I like rotations on the line
DeVito – Ellis.
LaBoy – Douglas.
Pouha – Jenkins.
[No particular order in depth or anything]

Nah
Most people that don’t want us to address a secondary position either want a pass rusher or a wide receiver. When people are calling for a pass rusher, unless they’re going to replace Bryan Thomas which is a much more complicated position than pass rushing alone, then they mean to replace Douglas. I somehow doubt they mean Jenkins or Ellis or even Pouha.
I like Douglas. He’s underrated. But for people that want the meanest front seven in the league, including me, all this talk means to replace Thomas or Douglas. You can’t have it both ways and we sorely need some players signed away so we can get at least a free agent or two.
I reluctantly vote go.
from one of cimini’s articles:
DE Marques Douglas, 32, one of the unsung guys on the Jets’ top-ranked defense, will be a UFA on March 5. From what I’m told, the Jets plan to let him hit the open market.
