Jets Sign Nick Folk
Update- Feely still wants to be a Jet despite signing of Folk
"I'd love to get back there," Feely said from his home in Plantation, Fla. "We have had negotiations and discussions, and they were very pleasant, very positive. They're very pleased with how I kicked over the past couple years and the leadership I showed. [Special teams coordinator] Mike Westhoff and I got along great. It's just a matter of coming to an agreement on a contract."
Asked to comment on the signing of Folk, he replied:
"They're being prudent,"
Original Post
According to Adam Schefter the Jets have signed Nick Folk to a one year contract, he tweeted:
Filed to ESPN: With K Jay Feely scheduled to become a free agent, the N.Y. Jets signed former Cowboys K Nick Folk to a one-year contract.
Beyond annoyed at this news, makes no sense on any level for me, replaced on kick off's in Dallas, and then was fluffing FG's left, right and centre. Must of done something special in his work out. Dumb move, not exactly the best way to start off the free agency period. Going to be interesting to hear the reason behind this.

The only reason
Is that Feely is set to become a UFA and the Jets will be hard pressed to resign him. But Nick Folk?? I was hoping they would give an undrafted guy a chance to win the job. Folk was good but obviously he is having mental breakdowns. I will not feel comfortable at all with this guy kicking.
With an uncapped year I’m sure a salary can’t be a big problem for a kicker. Folks leg is not as big as some say it is, and he misses straight forward kicks. First step this off-season is one backwards in my opinion.

is it possible that this is just for kickoffs? Feely isnt exactly the best kickoff guy in the world.

That wouldn’t even make sense, since even the Cowboys figured he wasn’t good enough and got that beast kickoff specialist.
I doubt it, we won’t carry two kickers, I’m hoping that this is purely insurance just in case we can’t re-sign Feely.

it is only a one year deal so maybe they want to bring in competition? i guess we should be more upset if it was a multi year deal

If Feely was signed for next year and we took him to see some competition then fine, but with Feely unsigned, I’m not confident. Usually you bring back your guy then bring in the competition, not bring in competition and then try and get your guy back.

This was clearly done because we can’t sign any UFAs unless we lose some. I kind of hope this also is an insurance policy and he could be cut at any time. I really think Feely was the guy we needed.
It really is true when they say there is no loyalty in sports, most of the time it’s aimed at the athlete but every now and again you have to throw it at the organization.
I thought we were going for the big one next season, not taking on projects at unnecessary positions hoping they recapture form of days gone by.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks this is a good move.
This gives Mike Tannenbaum a lot of leverage in dealing with Jay Feely’s contract. He’s basically asking how much he wants to be a Jet next year. I like Jay Feely, but this make sense for the team.
As an insurance, I hear that Nick Folk was a former Pro-Bowler. Plus, the team isn’t necessarily done looking around for kickers either. As far as the timing that David mentioned above, if the opportunity presents itself you have to take it.
If we end up with two kickers, they can fight it out at training camp, and that’s always good.
If we are working on a trade, we can also use one of the kickers to sweeten the deal.
Personally, I hope we keep Jay Feely, but this makes sense businesswise.

I don’t see how it does make sense buisnesswise, when signing competition, you sign your guy first, Jay has been consistently good for 5 years, signing a guy like Folk before you sign him back up is a slap in the face. Nick was a former pro bowler, but that’s the past, most rcently he is a 64% completion kicker, who was replaced on kick off duty and missed 7 of his 11 final kicks.
If we can’t sign Feely now, and we end up going into the season with a guy who couldn’t hold his job on kick-offs (while kicking in a dome), and completed 64% of his kicks in his most recent season, how’s that business decision going to look a few games in with him missing left right and centre and us being force to frantically search the wire?? reliable kickers don’t come around every day, we had the chance to maintain some consistency and we seem to be flipping the bird to it. For a team harbouring championship aspirations, you don’t take unnecessary risks unless you have to, this is a unnecessary risk and we didn’t have to do it.

Only way this makes sense is if news filters through soon that Jay has also been signed and Folk is insurance. Otherwise it makes little sense to me to take a risk/reward type move like this.

Well, I think they signed him just so he doesn’t go to another team. But I’m sure they’re still negotiating with Jay Feely. The team still has to think about what happens if Jay Feely gets offered an ungodly sum and they have to move on. Despite Nick Folk’s imperfections, it’ll be good to have a former Pro Bowler on the team.
But like I said, it doesn’t mean Jay Feely will be gone or that we won’t be seeing any more kickers.

“if it aint broke dont fix it” was my initial thought especially given feely’s solid performances this year. folk was cut so many times last year, it’s hard to imagine he’d be any kind of upgrade aside from his youth. if he’s not being used purely as insurance (which i agree is a slap in the face to feely), i hope they have a feely/folk duel in camp. at least if folk won that way i would not feel so bad.
Sorry
I don’t see how it does make sense buisnesswise, when signing competition, you sign your guy first,
but no. Why do you sign your guy first? To show him how much you love him? To show him that your heart is in control over your brain? You sign whichever guy is going to give you the most leverage. There is no rule that says you have to take care of your guy first because it is the nice thing to do. You keep bringing up that Fold was a 64% FG kicker. Get over it would you? The guy sat way over 80 percent. He has a horrible 6 games. This is what sample sizes are for. The missing 7 out of 11 is a blip on the radar. It is a glitch. It is an aberration. You don’t just kick like money in college, for 2.5 years in the pro’s and then just forget how to do it. Folk “lost” his job to Bueller because that is all Bueller does, he a monster kick off man, who would take deep kicker job on literally any team in the NFL. He is a touchback machine. I mean Dave, you keep pounding the 64 percent in like you actually believe that he is a 64 percent kicker. If you believe that, then you aren’t the reasonable and logical football analyst I thought you were. Sample size my friend. Sample size. I understand you like Feely better, that doesn’t mean you have to try to make Folk look as bad as possible by constantly pointing out his career down year, which came from a bad 6 games, while you overlook his first 40 games where he was dynamite.

Nice to see a reasonable, logical post instead of everybody crying like babies that we downgraded, Jay Feely is the best kicked in the history of the NFL, and Nick Folk can’t even make an extra point without getting lucky. I swear some of the commenter’s here blow shit entirely out of proportion sometimes. I 100% agree with the entirety of your post. Good job.

Funny how nobody ever thinks
maybe we signed Folk so that we can have leverage over Feely. You can’t just base every thing you do on what happened last year. Otherwise you end up overpaying for career years and overreacting based on career worst years. Which is what is happening here. In reality, Jay might have a marginal advantage over Folk. We like him more because he kicked well for us this year. We don’t know what was going on with Folk. All I know is that he was as solid as any kicker in the NFL for the first 2.5 years of his career and now he comes off 6 bad games and he is horse shit.

Call me crazy
But on top of leading Jets in scoring and making the vast majority of the kicks we asked him to, he’s been pretty mild mannered and positive in his tenure with the Jets. Hell, even when the Jets sign a potential starting kicker to “replace” him he keeps a positive mind and says he’d like to be back with the team.
Hopefully this is just leverage, or a contingency plan. Otherwise I already have a bad feeling about our ’10 season outlook.
Feely has been a stand up guy, a good kicker, a good special teamer in general and a good team mate. No issue with personality at all. He is most definitely mild mannered, he has opinions, and he expresses them, but then again don’t we all, when he talks he talks about health care and tax cost cutting, would take that over players who when they talk they speak about playing time or contracts.

You guys really get annoying sometimes
This is started to remind me of the whole Revis/Woodson drama.
Just because you don’t agree with the signing of Folk doesn’t mean you have to dog him as a kicker. Honestly, up until his most recent 4 or 5 weeks, he looked like a very promising kicker. Certainly started his career off a lot better then Jay Feely did. The fact is, whether our kicker is Jay or Folk, you guys will complain about Folk, and some point around week 8 we start calling him automatic, forget about Feely, etc. Folk is a really good young kicker who just happened to hit his worst stretch of his life at the end of a season, got cut, and we got lucky enough to pick him up. He may not be better then Feely, but he is better then at least half of the kicker in the NFL, probably more.
"Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring; besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic."
- CRASH DAVIS
All I mean by that is
calling Folk names and implying he isn’t good at his job just makes you look like a bunch of spoiled kids. It is one thing to want Feely, it is another to use a small sample of stats to paint an unfair picture of Folk, just because you prefer Feely. Let’s be serious here.
In 2007 Folk was 26-31 (84 percent)
In 2008, Folk was 20-22 (91 percent)
In 2009, up until his melt down, Folk was 14-17 (82 percent)
So, what should we take as more important. The 2.5 years of data that show Folk as a totally reliable, 60-70 (you know, and 86 percent kicker), or the small sample that is almost surely a blip on the radar where he want 4-11 in 6 games? Something tells me a 70 kick sample size is far more meaningful then an 11 kick sample.
"Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring; besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic."
- CRASH DAVIS
That is true.
I don’t know how to judge kickers.
Some go bad and never come back.
Some go good and never look back.
Some mess around with stats and confuse us.
I am happy with Folk, I would have been happier if we waited until we re-signed Feely.
Either way, there is no doubt the Jets have a kicker next year—for now.

I agree with you Max
Nice name by the way. I like Feely. He is my guy. I grew very fond of him during the last season. I just dont like trashing players like Folk because we like Feely better. It makes us come off bad as a fan base. Feely is my top choice, but Folk isn’t chopped liver either.

The thing is that FG kicking is by far the most volatile and random thing in the NFL
Nobody knows when a kicker is gonna suddenly hook one, when they’re gonna hit a bad stretch, or when they’re gonna come out of a bad stretch. Look at Nate Kaeding. Look at Gary Anderson in 1998. Look at Mike friggin Vanderjagt. All I’m saying is there’s a reason why kickers come and go so often. Hopefully Nick Folk turns out better this year, but no one can say for sure.
Now, to be fair, I’m not really all that shook up about letting Feely go… I mean, if you’re planning on kicking field goals all year long then you’ve got more to worry about than just your kicker hitting them, y’know? But we know that Feely is a great all-around special teamer and is a positive influence on the team in general, so it feels like a downgrade no matter what.
What about Michael Turkovich
Jets sign K Nick Folk, “OT Michael Turkovich”
Who is Michael Turkovich? Future RT?
Height: 6 ft 6 in Weight: 305 lb
Can he be…another undrafted free agent the Cowboys give up on who has a very successful career? (I.e. Tony Richardson) — no comparison, but hmmm.
He could be a help to the run game, the Jets usually line up with an extra tackle on run formations, let’s see what happens.
I watched Michael for a few years in college as a ND fan, really struggled as part of the infamous 2007 line which was about as bad as the Jets 07 line, he played LG that year, and opened up a few holes but generally was just part of a bad unit, nobody could look good on that line. 2008 we moved him to LT and he did considerably better, he plays off of confidence, and could be a decent back-up, run blocking is decent, pass protection needs to improve. Not seen him since he went undrafted in after 2008 season, think he injured himself and didn’t take the field last year. Was a decent college player, not sure if he has a future in the NFL, but might as well bring him in and see what he has.

The Jets need to get better at scouting kickers. They have gone through a revolving door of average talent. Maybe they should invest on hiring the Raider’s kicker evaluators.
Every year they sign two or three kickers and punters for training camp, and always come out with lame ducks.
Please dont get me wrong I like feely as a player, just want a kicker that lasts a couple of seasons with this team. This comment includes Punters.
Jets green since 1997
To be fair Jay has lasted two years with this team, and there is no reason to cut him, so it just be a case of the team skimping on positions like kicker. Until Jay loses the job it should be there for him, and so far he hasn’t so at the minimum he should be going into his 3rd year kicking which is not bad by NFL standards. Punting position is another matter though, really thought T.J Conley was going to come out of TC as top dog in that regard and hold it down for a while, but never happened.

It just seems like whenever we get a new kicker,
everybody is all pissed off, and then said guy always ends up stepping right in and doing fine. Folk was the definition of consistent before his mini melt down at the end of this season. And I don’t know what the talk about him having no leg is, well, actually it is nonsense is what it is. He easily has the leg to boot 50 yard FG’s, I watch a lot of Cowboys games. I don’t really get why the chose this road, maybe Feely just was asking for more money then they felt comfortable giving out, I don’t know. If Folk does end up kicking for the Jets though, I think he will be fine. There is no reason to think otherwise.
