Jay Feely: Stay or Go?

Feely's a popular guy among Jets fans. Originally signed as a stopgap replacement until Mike Nugent got healthy in 2008, Feely kicked so well that he took the kicker job and never gave it back. He's hit 54 of 64 regular season attempts in two years. He is also a polished guy and active on Twitter. The former Giant also has plenty of experience kicking in the Meadowlands, although it's unclear how the wind will play in the new stadium. He even did an admirable job in spot punting duty in the Playoffs.

I personally think he's a bit overrated. There is only so much stats say about kickers. I think the kicker position is similar to closer in baseball. Guys who hold both roles have limited high pressure spots where they enter games. A lot of them put up great stats, but there are only a few you can really trust to deliver when everything is on the line. Feely hasn't missed many kicks as a Jet, but the ones he has missed have tended to hurt (one in an overtime loss to Buffalo, one and one blocked in the Atlanta debacle, two in the AFC Championship Game). If your life depended on a kicker making a 45 yard field goal, would you feel safe with Feely? I don't think I would.

I vote to keep Feely. It's one thing to say he's not an elite kicker. It's not easy to find one, though. He is better than most. I also would like to see the Jets look through the CFL, UFL, and undrafted free agents. Bring in some competition for Feely. You can find a great kicker off the scrap heap. They might find that rock solid kicker. If it doesn't work out, they can always come back to Jay.

Bring back Nugent

They should let Feely go and bring back Nugent for the following reasons:

1) Nugent is a better clutch kicker
2) They haven’t yet gotten enough value from using that 2nd round pick on Nugent
3) Nugent’s a Buckeye (and Feely is from Michigan)

No way

Nugent was horrible for Tampa Bay last year.

Didn’t Tampa cut Nugent after he hit like 2 of his first 7 attempts???

Nugent's misses for TB

were …… a couple 50+ yarders ……. one of them hit either the upright or the crossbar. He did miss one or two that he should have made but …… he had a rookie coach off to a horrible start and he used Nugent as a scapegoat.

Nugent played a couple games for the Cardinals near the end of the season and was perfect in his kicks (substituting for Neil Racker who was injured for a couple games).

My prediction for the off-season: Nugent signs with the Bengals.

To be fair though, he only had two kicks for Arizona, so it would be worrying if he didn’t have a 100% record. He was 50% on the season with 2 touchbacks, I just think that would be a dangerous choice. I think the Jets and Nugents should cut ties for good. Wish him all the best, but would trust Jay 100x more than Mike.

Jay Feely

is also a pretty good tackler. One of the best tackling kickers out there IMO. It’s always good to have competition in camp, so the only way I would let him go is if somebody actually outplays him for the position.

Jay Feely, one of my favourite guys, is pretty reliable, has the Jets consecutive kicks record, it’s not easy to find an elite kicker but I would Jay in the next bracket, he tackles well, we saw that if absolutely necessary he can do a job punting the football. Some of the kicks he missed were due to bad holds or high snaps. He comes across as a real true professional, and seems like a good man to mentor younger kids, not in the art of place kicking, but just being a football player. He is a steady kicker, and there are only a handful of kickers in the NFL that I would fully trust to make a 45 yarder, Jay would be just below those. Bring in some competition, but bring Jay back.

Ha, it was awesome, did you send him the link or did he just pick it up somewhere. Jay is one of the better players to have a conversation with on there, had a good chat with him a couple of months back about religion. Very interesting guy.

Jay is just as good as anyone out there. Maybe I wouldn’t call him elite but who is these days, Kaeding? I trust him, he hasnt choked. And he has just the right kind of attitude for this team. The guy is fearless. How many kickers try to blow people up? Feeley might be one of my favorite kickers of all time. Its almost insulting to call him a kicker, he’s a football player.

It seems strange to me that Jay has only been here for two years, seems like he has been here for 5+.

This ones easy, even with his few misses, its tough to remember the last time we had a kicker this good.

I cannot believe some guys are serious about Nugent. Hands down Feely is one of my fav Jets, although I almost had a heart attack when he missed those 2 against the colts.
Stay all the way, he fun and a reall player..not just a , kicker..

Bingo!

Just to keep the conversation going...

Apparently, Rex wanted to bring in Matt Stover with him from Baltimore. However, Stover and Feely are friends so Stover didn’t want to take Feely’s job. Would you rather have had Matt Stover or Jay Feely?

I would take Feely, their career FG success % are pretty much identical, Feely has father time on his side, Feely probably has a bigger leg, he has a better % from 50+, and Feely was better in 2009. Feely hands down every time.
