Mike Francesa... has a good idea?

I know the fat man isn't exactly Mr. Popularity around here, and rightfully so, but I thought he had a good idea when it came to what to do about the mess that is the NFL Pro Bowl.Over 30 starters opted out this year. Nobody ever wants to play in it. Nobody ever even watches it. It puts players in danger for no reason. So why do it? Tradition? What about alternatives?

This is where Mike's good idea, at least in my opinion, comes in...

Instead of a game, since nobody wants to play, have a kind of award dinner the week before the superbowl, at the site of that years superbowl. Give out offensive player, defensive player, MVP awards, all that stuff, you can make it into a little show, a mini espy’s type of thing. You can have the best play of the year, best defensive play of the year, best hit of the year, etc. Have players presenting awards and cracking jokes on each other, televise it on ESPN. I think that is a much better idea, I for one would certainly enjoy it a lot more then the Pro Bowl.

As for the athletic part, maybe just have a little hour long skills competition, something like that.

What do you guys think? This game is just silly, and in some cases embarrassing. Why force guys to play in a mock football game, where half the playbooks are excluded to avoid injury? Just get them all in a room and let them have some fun with the camera rolling.

It makes sense

that Francesa would think of an award dinner. I don’t think it’ll change much soon though, as apparently last night drew big ratings.

But Jon Gruden had a good point during the broadcast last night. All those replacements had a good experience at the Pro Bowl and it must have served as some sort of inspiration for them.

As long as he is not invited to the dinner I’m all for it. Not taken an interest in the Pro Bowl for years, and not seen a single snap for the past three years, but I definitely would tune into an occasion like that with all the awards handed out etc,

sure

sounds good.
only one problem.
it will never happen.
nfl will not do away with it’s all-star game.
the only way i can see this becoming a real game though, is making it mandatory for the players voted in to play. though i must also say that it might not change much. like has been said, half the playbooks are missing, people are scared to get hurt in a pointless game. but i’m not at all opposed to doing something to keep us from being the weakest all-star games in pro sports. that’s a little embarassing to me.

Of course that fat piece of s__t would think of that

It would be a free dinner for the press and a chance to get more in depth interviews. Its actually a good idea, except, this years pro bowl sold out. Where you goner replace that revenue.

Skills comp

I could be wrong on this but I think they had a mini skills competition a while back before the actuall Pro Bowl. I recall a kickers contest and some sort of QB challenge. I like idea, almost like the Basketball all-star format then the dinner with the awards and jokes. Im all for it. The Pro Bowl has mess up rule like no blitzing and you can only play a 4-3. Get real, who wants to watch that.

I remember a skills competition back when Boomer made the Pro Bowl as a Jet. Dan Marino was there, too. They were throwing at moving targets, like the kind you shoot arrows at. Boomer didn’t do so well though. Hey, if they bring this back, they can actually get Target to sponsor it.
