Jim Leonhard Suffers Leg Injury, Out for Season
Jim Leonhard was injured today during practice in a collision with wide receiver Patrick Turner. The exact injury has not been confirmed yet, but he was carted off the practice field and it is assumed to be either a broken shin or leg.
This injury is HUGE news and a major loss for the team, defensively and in special teams. Jerricho Cotchery will be taking over as the punt returner and we may also see two-deep punt return packages including Santonio Holmes and Antonio Cromartie. I'll have more news for you Jets fans as time develops.
UPDATE: According to Jets beat writer Manish Mehta, Jim Leonhard will indeed miss the rest of the season.

Damnit Damnit Damnit Damnit Damnit Damnit Damnit Damnit
Smith has about the same run, and pass coverage skills. We lose a bit on special teams too, but in the realm of the secondary Leonard’s not irreplaceable. Though I’m worried about communication problems arising from this. Still Damnit Damnit Damnit Damnit Damnit Damnit covers my feelings on this one
shortest man out, again
Horrible news….Jim’s a warrior and a sparkplug and will be missed. Rex has to squeeze what he can out of Smith and fix the schemes.
That now leaves Drew Coleman as the shortest Jet on the field, at 5’9". Usually the shortest Jet ends up being one of my favorites (Ray Mickens, Leon, Woodhead, Leonhard), but that ain’t gonna happen w/ Drew Coleman…
I really don't feel the drop off from Leonhard to Smith is that big, but...
it does hurt our overall depth at safety, Lowery is the key here, if he can transition over to coverage safety well this could even be a blessing in disguise. Still Leonhard’s leadership will be missed.
Terrible news
absolutely awful. There’s nothing we can do right now that adequately fills the void left by his injury.

We Lost Revis for the Second Half of the First Pats Game...
…and then made adjustments and shut down the Pats offense.
Next man up.
this is terrible
one of the best on our defense. whos gonna lead the defense now? our best cover safety and great punt returner is gone damn.
Best cover safety and great punt returner?
Not even close. he was a liability in coverage and very average as a punt returner. With that said, he will be missed, he is a great tackler and was the quarterback of the defense.
Was he really the qb of the defense though? Seems like our guys were always misaligned. He can tackle but he’s not much of a hitter. Its not like he’s intimidating anybody.
I think the only reason he starts now is bc Rex is being loyal. Rex wanted him last year to get his defense in, but now he’s a liability that we spend more time trying to hide than we do to actually make use of his limited talent. I’d much rather Smith, who also can’t cover, but he’s supposedly pretty smart too, he’s a much heavier hitter, and he actually has a presence. Receivers know not to get caught with smith comin downhill on them. They all know how he broke Boldin’s face.
Our safety group just got more physical and athletic. Our team actually just got better.

So your saying Rex had a better option at saftey
and chose loyalty over the overall good of the team ? I don’t know bout that.
Not downing Smith but any goon can break somebody’s face being as there is little meat on ones face. just to clarify Smith is not a goon.

I don’t know maybe. Couldve been an unconcious thing, like an old pair of jeans. Yeah the knew jeans are good and all but you keep rockin the old ones bc they fit good. But they keep geeting just a little more worn out as time goes on. Then they get a rip and you have to wear the new ones. And after wearing the new ones and breakin them in a bit, you realize they are better than the old ones actually. Now you only wear the old ones when you paint.

ummm
OK lets hope that’s the case.

I’m actually hoping that is the case. Why would I not hope to discover that the guy riding the pine is actually better than the starter? Maybe we have the next Tom Brady of safeties.

Hearing this news actually made me sad.
Darrelle Revis once won a game of Connect Four in three moves.
Ruined my day
So I’m right there with you.

I dont think we'll miss him.
This might even lead to him being cut after the season. He’s got no range; he’s not very good in coverage, gets picked on by TEs on a weekly basis; he’s a sure tackler but not much of a hitter. The excuse made to create a perception of value is that he’s smart and can get guys in the proper position. But we’ve had guys misaligned all year. In fact, that’s been the on-going achilles heel of the team.
Leonard was valuable last year for the purpose of installing a new defense. But he’s not at all a playmaker. Now that the defense is installed its time to get more athletic at the position. At SS u have to be able to either hit really well or cover. Jim does neither.

I hate to be that guy who says “no huge loss” but as far as this week goes at least, I think he would have been something of a liability against New England’s tight ends. I like him. I like a lot of what he does. We will miss him some over the long haul, but I don’t view this as devastating.

It could be
He’s the signal caller for the D…we just got over most of the communication issues we had, but we still had some to get over, I.E. the Joel Dressen(?) TD from the texans
This could set us back quite a bit

Good news / Bad News
Leonhard is out for the season, he is the leader of the secondary, he could be the heart and soul of this defense, The Jets margin in their last games have been very small, losing an intregal part of the defense, disaster for the rest of the season is very possible, thats a lot of bad news. This injury scares me.
The good news is that compared to other teams, the jets have been very fortunate with injuries. IMO a lot of the credit ned s to go to the Strength and Conditioning coachs, and Rex’s approach to practices. The good news is that with this disaster opprotunity arises.
The Jets need to make decisions on the three remaining safeties for this year and next.
Pool, Smith, and Ihedigbo have to step up, decisions have to be made, they all will have plenty of opprotunities to show what they can do. I am hoping that this gives Lowery his shot at safety.
I’m with you on Lowery. If he has range this Leonard injury may have been a good thing.

Anybody remember Rashad Washington?
Give him a call lol
as a long time jets/islanders fan this is par for the course
But our d is awesome against the run and we do have good depth in this area. Now keep our O line healthy and I am still believing this team can beat the Belicheats.
We don't have much depth at Safety
We have general DB depth, mainly in the CB position but our safety position has been our Achilles tendon this year. We can’t cover tight ends or running backs that receive all year long. Expect us to sign a free agent like Donovan Warren that we had during the off season to help in that department

There Is some good news
Just heard that he MAY be able to come back very late in playoffs or so if he makes good progress, according to the NFL network……
Expect him to be placed on IR though if they don’t think he can come back
In defense of J L's "shortcomings" this year
1. He had 1/2 a Revis for 1/2 the year.
2. had a rook in his secondary
3 . had a new safety to his left.
4. And a new corner in front of him.
Thats a lot to put on anybody’s plate. IMO

He had a new everybody last year. And the revis excuse actually makes him look worse. Ur basically saying revis was covering his deficiencies.

league has adjusted as a whole to the jet D
last year he came in as a QB and led the on-slot for the D. Having a all world revis helped a lot last year.
But we S See. i think he will be missed.
I may not be the most noble of men but in a town of lepers, im the one with the most fingers.
