New York Jets Named To Pro Bowl: Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold, D'Brickashaw Ferguson

Think back about a year ago, where we were discussing which of the "core four" New York Jets should receive new contracts.

As it turns out, three of them got new deals. The Jets must have known what they were doing, as the three said players were just named to the 2010-11 AFC Pro Bowl team as starters. This is the third straight Pro Bowl selection for both Mangold and Revis. It's the second straight for Ferguson.

Here are all of the Jets that made the team, both starters and alternates (according to NYDN's Manish Mehta)

First Team:

CB Darrelle Revis, C Nick Mangold, and OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson

Alternates: (Nine Jet players)

LB David Harris (first), KR Brad Smith (second), CB Antonio Cromartie (second), TE Dustin Keller (second), OG Brandon Moore (third), DE Shaun Ellis (fourth), LB Calvin Pace (fourth), LB Jason Taylor (fourth) and RB LaDainian Tomlinson (fifth).

Congratulations!

Wilfork was low down on the fan voting ranks...

So he was voted in by players and coaches. That says quite a bit.

Meriweather, however… ugh.

Better than Revis? Its actually impossible, because Revis is playing near perfect football right now. The fact that McCourty got in over Cromartie and Brandon Flowers and Quentin Jammer is a joke.

I'd gladly take him over Cromartie

Cromartie arguably lost the Jets-Ravens game with those PI calls. Flowers is unlucky, but McCourty’s won several games by either getting a pick to seal it, or making a big third-down stop to force a punt (or missed FG).

McCourty wasn’t ranked highly in the fan vote, so clearly he was elevated by NFL coaches and players. It’s not like he scraped by on reputation (he’s a rook) or ridiculous fan votes (he didn’t have any).

You know what, those guys have made plays all season

Yeah, they may be trash in coverage, but, they have made big plays all season. Can’t say the same for the Jets defense. I agree about Wilfork though. He’s just a fat guy who takes up space who can make a tackle now and then when the runner comes his way. He never gets penetration.

Sometimes guys who do the dirty work and don’t necessarily make big plays don’t get appreciated.

I actually heard somebody call WFAN yesterday and claim Sione Pouha and Mike Devito, both of whom have been terrific against the run this year, couldn’t play for another team in the league.

They went dink-and-dunk around the time he came back, so you could potentially look at the stats before and after him and think he made a big difference, when really it was schematic.

Mankins has been really useful in the games he’s played, but he missed half a season. In terms of any-given-play, he probably deserves to be there. But missing half the season makes it a little hard to justify.

Meriweather? No chance. He’s not the best or most useful or most valuable safety in a Pats uniform.

Stating the obvious, but

The Pro Bowl has lost it’s relevance over a dozen years ago. Why should we be surprised at some of the picks? And then you have some players who don’t think it’s worth their time (I thought it was the fan’s time also BTW) to show up, so they develop an injury that they didn’t have the day before and get replaced by a player that probably should be on the practice squad.

But isn’t Hawaii beautiful?

by oldskooljet on Dec 28, 2010 8:59 PM EST reply actions

I have to question Revis making it. He spent a quarter of the season either hurt or nursing an injury and less effective. Since he’s become healthy again, he’s been really good. Still, he isn’t shutting down an elite receiver a week like he did last year. Seems like he got the nod on reputation as seems to happen often in the Pro Bowl.

Ok, I know you’re not, I think :-). Yeah, Revis has no interceptions, but only gave up two TD’s all season. And one was not a TD if Rex would had challenge it (Denver game). The Jets as a team have given up 28 TD’s. so do the math.

If anyone were to be annoyed, it'd probably be Champ Bailey

And if Bailey were to look at anyone to replace, I’d have to think he’d be gunning for either Asomugha or Revis’s spots, because they’ve both had significant time off and seem to coast in as much on reputation as anything. Bailey’s rep is equal to those two (perhaps not as recently), so he ought to be battling it out for those spots with them.

The interceptions were just icing on the cake

The guy’s a great tackler, snuffs out a lot of third-down plays with big tackles that don’t allow yardage-after-catch, and he’s had a couple of fumbles forced and a sack. He’s a hell of a tackler. Also, all his interceptions have been ‘solid’ plays – he hasn’t tried to jump a route yet, he just plays proper positioning and great leverage and occasionally comes up with the ball.

In short, he’s not Asante Samuel (or Antonio Cromartie), and that’s a great thing. He’s a tackling machine like Leigh Bodden, but he comes up with athletic interceptions too.

I found it interesting that Rex said he was coveting McCourty himself, pre-draft

He’s not quite the same sort of player as Revis. McCourty’s a better tackler – he seems to thrive on making hits in run support – but he hasn’t got Revis’s all-over-the-WR-like-a-rash coverage ability yet.

Revis really fits the Jets’ blitz-heavy D, because you can sit him on an island and use everyone else to pass-rush. McCourty really fits Belichick’s (current) D style, because he’s as good in run D as he is against the pass, he can hold the edge and he never jumps routes or goes for risky plays.

john i meant that at no disrespect to revis

but go look at the stats compare rookie years the stats are near identical but mccourty has double the picks and had more sacks ff and fr . rookie years i would give the slight edge to mccourty if devin can get better as he goes like revis did is the question. i think in the long run they both will be similiar shutdown cbs.

No revis is on his own level which for me is not debatable. Its more about performance is a Revis season at say 75% capability more derserving than another player with a career year?

There's no debate, Cro had I believe eight or ten interceptions in his rookie year

He’s not even mention in the same breath as the other corners. I agree McCourty has made plays, but he don’t even move around the field like Revis has at times. Great going back and forth with you Pat fans, but leave the homers back at the Pulpit.

I agree McCourty has made plays, but he don’t even move around the field like Revis has at times.

That’s schematic. The Pats play LCB and RCB. It’s because Belichick likes to disguise what he does, and moving players around the field screams “man-coverage!”, which is, well, not disguised. He likes to be able to throw man- or zone- at will.

Cromartie’s a different type of CB to both Revis and McCourty. He’s very much like the ex-Patriot Asante Samuel – he jumps routes, whiffs on tackles, but because he takes risks, he comes up with the occasional big play. However, because he takes risks, he often also comes up grasping nothing but air (or penalty flags). He’s bound to get interceptions, but he’s also bound to give up plays and/or games because he makes stupid errors taking risks when he shouldn’t. Cromartie will win games as well as lose them, but he’s not an all-round CB like Revis (or like how McCourty is becoming/ has become).

Because of a good rookie season?

Lets not forget Lito Sheppard and Cromartie were once pro bowl CBs that were suppose to be great too. One good season doesnt tell the future.

That's what we're saying.

IF McCourty continues his development at the same rate as he has from week 3 to week 16, THEN he can be one of the top 5 CBs in the league. Is he now? Probably not. But he could be.

He might be in 3 years time if he develops at his current pace.

But the best corner in football is subjective – who is better, the corner that isn’t even challenged, or the one that is targeted 100 times and breaks them all up?

See? _You_ take the one that breaks up every throw.

But from a tactical standpoint, they are equally good for the team. If the QB knows that if he throws it to one side, it falls incomplete no matter what (see Revis in the Monday night game, or Deion Sanders in his prime), he won’t even bother looking to that side. He’ll take his chances on the other side. This is what defensive coordinators want – it means before the ball is even snapped, they know what side of the field the ball is going.

when another corner starts running around following the opponents #1 wr, then we can start the revis comparisons.

Until then, that guy u wanna think might one day become revis, aint in revis’ league. Just like that guy who has stats comparable to brady’s first year is not any sort of indicator that he will ever be as good as brady is.

by Crackback on Dec 28, 2010 11:34 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

That's the point

He is not Revis, this year. In 3 years’ time, he may be as good as Revis was last year.

That's not how the Pats D works, though

McCourty has had picks on throws to Calvin Johnson and Braylon Edwards where he played perfect inside positioning and robbed then on the deep throw. If he can play those guys perfectly as a rookie, it’s a good sign for later on. That goes double when you remember that Revis really showed how good he was by keeping great WRs like Moss down.

The fact he doesn’t follow WRs around isn’t his fault, it’s just the way the Pats scheme works – by disguising what people are doing, by not allowing the matchups to be easily ascertained.

If he was good enough to do it he would. Its not about getting picks. Its about taking the opponent’s best receiver out of the game with one guy.

Why can’t a guy just be good or have a good year? Why is it every time some corner is playing well that team’s start coming here saying he’s as good as revis? Do you people understand the quantum leap that revis took btw year 1 and year 3? That wasn’t a natural progression. He went from being a pro bowler to have the greatest season for a corner ever… By far. If some young qb’s season measures up with brady’s first year at the helm, does that mean he’ll have a 50 td season as well down the road? Hell no.

Saying he isn’t as good as revis isn’t a knock. The kid is good, but revis had the best year in history at the position last year, and has been just as good this year when healthy. There’s a looooong way to go from revis’ first year to now.

by Crackback on Dec 29, 2010 12:25 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

that is an insult to Night Train Lane's rookie season

no corner’s season will beat that. He had int’s and his hits were vicious.

As pats fans, we look at Mccourty, already playing better than most corners. So we see who last great rookie was. That was Revis. We believe, because BB is just as good a defensive coach as rex, and Mccourty’s ceiling looks extremely high, that mccourty good be just as revis in our system (aka no passes to the right, no runs outside to the right.)

No

They tried it against Megatron, but it stunted their pass-rush a bit, because it meant that Hill could identify coverages. When they abandoned it in the second-quarter, Hill started throwing picks.

It’s just a feature of Belichick’s D – opposition QBs aren’t supposed to be able to tell if they’re in man-coverage, playing Cover-2 short zones, Cover-3 deep zones, or Cover-4 quarter zones. Moving them around the field tacked onto one man one-on-one tells the QB they’re in man coverage one-on-one – meaning he knows it’s not Cover-2, Cover-3 or otherwise.

The Jets blitz a lot, so they can afford to play man-to-man like that. The Pats play a lot of exotic zone-looks with minimal blitzing, so they need their guys to be left/right all the time.

I dont think he really had anywhere near a good year, mostly from his own standards. Last year, even with defenses doing their best to avoid him, he still managed to get around the ball and make plays. This season, hold out, hampered by a hammy, and no real impact plays. He did a good job in coverage for the most part, but wasnt near the player he’s been the previous few years. reputation got it, but i’ll take it.

That is the equivilent of being a Giants fan these days

Big Argonauts fan, eh?

Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

The Giants won the SB three years ago

last time Jets won was 43-44 years ago I believe. And I don’t really follow the CFL. But i go to lots of Jays games, and boo the Yankees every time I can.

Hows cliff lee doing, oh wait, how about carl crawford. oh. srry.

The Carl Crawford comment makes no sense

Yanks were never serious about him. No Yankee fan I know wanted him either. His defense will be wasted in the dump anyway. I meant Giants are Mets like with their recent collapses. Its funny that Boston fans take shots at the Jets for not winning in 40 years, when they should know all about going long stretches without winning.

You arent one of those types of "fans", are you?

A card carrying member of RSN, a fan since 04 and a Pats fan since 01? Ugh, I hate wagonners of any kind, even Yankee or Jets ones.

You would be shocked

But the majority at PSA was fine with DJ leaving instead of getting some 6 yr 120 million deal. Yanks did a good job in painting DJ out to be the bad guy. Amazing how a guy with a quarter of a billion will soil his legacy for a million more. Very Sad.

I won't ask why

you Pats fans show up at the same place and time where there is heated discussion to support/rec, each other. I will just point out it is very obvious if it is an argumentative tactic or an effort to hijack a thread that’s ultimately unrelated.

We had an out of control member in this thread that I ultimately had to censure, so you get a bit of a pass. I’ll just say a badly behaving person won’t be an excuse for excessively provocative behavior, if I see it.

Maybe create a fanpost for out of hand arguments not related to the thread. Or ignore a GGN member who gets heated.

I know you’re just defending your team but DO NOT come to our blog in packs and then call my members trolls. This is our home blog. You are guests.

As a Pats fan, well said sir

I will say, however, that the intent to defend the team only goes so far as the intent to defame them, in most cases. The language, at times, was terse and, again as a Pats fan, I apologize if any action I made played a part in extending or worsening the discussion.

That said, congrats to the Pro Bowlers for the Jets and Patriots, with the exception of Merriweather on our side, the positions were well deserved :P

Plan?

I haven’t a clue what you’re talking about, I don’t think I was on the game thread at all since I didn’t watch the game. But if you went through a game thread or open thread looking for things to complain about, you’re likely to find them. Shrug.
