“Things like that are day one training-camp things we’ve got to get better at. I think we’ve slipped the last couple of weeks,” Ryan said. “That span in the third quarter, I’ve never seen anything like that. I think we can get better through hard work on the practice field.”

This is a guy who has lost all control of his coaching staff, and discipline on his team. He doesn’t know what else to do. The team is a leaky boat mess with some very talented players.

And yet has still locked up a playoff spot before the final week with double digit wins. Is the constant negativity really necessary?

“Lost all control of his coaching staff”? Really?

And I gotta say, while I’d say the offense is loaded with talent, I don’t feel the same way about the defense. We lack a pass rusher, our D-line is average, we’re really hurting in our secondary, we have one all-star corner and another guy that’s inconsistent. Our linebackers are also terrible against the pass.

by cult hero on Dec 28, 2010 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

Only a team that does not expect greatness is one that is thrilled to be in the playoffs despite horribly inconsistent play, and coming off blowing a game.

I thought the goal was to win the Super Bowl?

by ________key on Dec 28, 2010 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

That’s not true at all. The NFL is tough. The Saints are most likely going to be going in as a Wild Card. We’re in. It’s a big deal. I’m happy about it. We’re in the playoffs for the second year in a row. We’ve won 10 games. Our QB is improving. Our OC may have FINALLY pulled his head out of his ass.

Our biggest problem is the lack of experience at the two biggest leadership positions on the team: HC and QB. That is something only time can solve.

While I want us to win a Super Bowl, I’ll be satisfied with a couple playoff wins. It’s nice. I’m glad to have a competitive team. And I’m not going to complain about not winning the Super Bowl until we’ve been eliminated in the playoffs.

I thought our goal was to be a Super bowl team? This isn’t the type of team that wins Super Bowls. In fact, its sloppier than last year’s team. Wrong direction to be heading.

Funny. I missed the part where Rex said this on Hard Knocks.

by ________key on Dec 28, 2010 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

I never said the defense was loaded with talent, I said "some" talented players.

And there is PLENTY of talent on defense. Rex’s entire defense is based on not having to have a dominant pass rusher. The absence of a pass rusher shouldn’t matter (or Rex’s defense doesn’t work anymore in the NFL). It is a corner’s defense, and they SHOULD have the best corner tandem in the NFL. And the Linebackers are exactly Rex Ryan talented linebackers.

The problem isn’t the talent level. Its that Ryan’s defense isn’t working.

by ________key on Dec 28, 2010 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

i completely agree

We’ve been complaining all year that the d-line doesn’t fight off of blocks on passing downs. Which makes no sense bc guys like devito and pouha slip off of run blocks routinely. The only conclusion is that they’re coached that way. And if you watch them, once they get engaged on passing downs they slow down. Which to me indicates that their job is to tie up blockers and create blitzing lanes; which never get there anymore bc the league has adjusted and have been leaving in extra blockers.

We’ve all been screaming about how we need to adjust to the fact that the overloads and zero blitzes aren’t working since week 1.

But rex has arrogantly held steadfast and refused to adjust his scheme. You can tell they don’t practice playing coverage; he expects that his blitzes will work. You can tell that they don’t practice shedding blocks; he expects his blitzes will work.

His call to reinforce fundementals is an admission, finally, that we can’t expect the blitzes to work. It only took 16 weeks.

Completely their job. And that is why having an elite pass-rusher isn’t the design of this defense.

You can tell they don’t practice playing coverage; he expects that his blitzes will work.

Completely. He just can’t believe his eyes. And even when he does drop back in coverage (which he’s done more of) he doesn’t have the personnel (esp Linebackers), nor the coaching, to do it.

by ________key on Dec 28, 2010 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

He needs to bite the bullet and accept that the design is flawed. U need at least one player that can routinely beat oneo on one match ups and create a double team; 2 would be even better. We need a suggs; but a suggs plus ngata plus the crazy blitzes would be glorious.

by Crackback on Dec 28, 2010 7:43 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I don’t know what he can do to accept that. Its his life’s work. I don’t think its going to happen.

He believes its going to work even after watching it NOT work literally 100s of times.

by ________key on Dec 28, 2010 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

Plus
We need a suggs

The roster was structured under the salary cap to exclude just that kind of player. Those kinds of players are VERY expensive because everyone wants one. Instead this year we got “a” Revis, meant to mean everything to this defense.

And I'm going to vent some more!

The Jets reached the playoffs through the back door? So what, only the performance on the day we could have locked up our own playoff spot counts? What about the 10 wins that let us lock it up with Jacksonville’s failure?

by cult hero on Dec 28, 2010 6:10 PM EST reply actions

i agree. we beat pittsburgh in pittsburgh for win #10.

Yeah troy didn’t play, but nobody assumed that that was going to mean a whole lot before that game. Most of the pundits had us getting beat.

We didn’t back into anything. All of our wins were hard fought and earned. And I don’t think there’s a team out there that has less wins than us that can say they have a better team or that they’re more deserving.

by Crackback on Dec 28, 2010 7:36 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

BTW, the same guy who said they backed in the playoffs and made it in the worst way, is the same guy who wrote the week before that the Jets just blasted off into the postseason with that naked bootleg play.

and the HOLMES of the... JETS!!!

I don’t think there’s a team out there that has less wins than us that can say they have a better team or that they’re more deserving.

Giants, GB and possibly San Diego have better teams in my opinion. But the problem isn’t about the teams below us, its about the BIG difference between elite teams and teams that are a handful of plays from having finished 8-8.

by ________key on Dec 28, 2010 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

well the giants and gb are both in the nfc so they don’t count. And with all those eli picks and RB fumbles and their effort and stupidity from the end of the 3rd qtr of the philly game and beyond, there’s no way in hell they’re more deserving than we are. Did they even beat a legit team that had their starting qb this year?

And there’s no way sd is more deserving with all the terrible losses they’ve had all year.

by Crackback on Dec 28, 2010 7:51 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

So you are saying that the Jets are better than the rest of the middling teams that didn’t make the playoffs in the AFC? All bad teams, none of them super bowl contenders. The Jets should be trying to be compared to the best teams not the middle of the pack.

by ________key on Dec 28, 2010 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

yes.

And they are better. And if they had solid coaching they’d be banging on the superbowl door with a win total in the teens.

Baltimore, green bay, 2nd miami, and chicago are all games that we not only could have won but should won, if not for bad coaching.
