Jets Drop Roller Coaster Shootout; Still Make Playoffs

The Jets fell to 10-5 today with a 38-34 loss to the Bears in Chicago. Both teams blew double digit leads. Go figure that a game between two teams with excellent defenses would be a game with plenty of fireworks in the passing game. However, the Jets clinched a Playoff spot with Washington's overtime victory in Jacksonville. So we can celebrate even after a frustrating loss.

I think this one came down to the front seven, which was pushed around in both the run game and the pass rush in the second half for the second straight week by a terrible offensive line. This is an issue to be concerned over.

Mark Sanchez's play was a big plus. He's catching fire at the right time.

Leave your thoughts below. I suppose you can be both happy and angry. The official recap will be up this evening.

I’m usually an optimist, but let’s face it. With no pass rush you’re not beating Brady and/ or Manning, least of all on the road. Where are they going?

Buster Posey: Let's enjoy him before he goes to the Yankees because he wants to win the World Series. Wait, what???

by rxmeister on Dec 26, 2010 4:32 PM EST via mobile reply actions

We probably wont have to worry about Manning

looks like it will be KC then NE, Indy if they make it will have to go through Balt. and Ptt.

Every game is different from the next

You never know what can happen with the right game plan

Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

I don’t think they have a game plan which can produce a decent pass rush.

They still have found a way to win 10 games and beat teams like NE and Pitt

And there wasnt a decent pass rush the whole season in my opinion. We made it to the dance and anything can happen.

It was a tough loss...

But now almost meaningless in the scope of things….Playoffs were the goal.

Offense looked great today, and remember this is a good Bears team that has played tough all year. Remember when they took apart a strong Philly team?

I would have loved the win, but just glad the offense showed the spark that’s been missing for a while.

The pass rush was very good in the first half, but it was nowhere to be found for most of the second half.

Less blitzes in the second half

When we rushed four, they blocked with seven.

by James Calvin on Dec 26, 2010 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

Disappointing

There’s no way we can have a home playoff game, which is unfortunate. We’ll have to win 3 playoff games on the road. We could have easily won this game. If our defense played like they did in the 4th quarter for the entire game, then we would have easily won this game.

I hope no one quickly blames the loss on Sanchez. Considering it’s NY, there are a few very critical fans who will. Sanchez was amazing today. Looked great. Tough pass to end the game, but I think most quarterbacks make that pass too.

Yeah I realize that, but there was still the outside chance of hosting the AFC Championship Game. With the skill of the AFC wild cards this year, it was possible.

Meh, we suck at home anyway.

And I think somewhere it was proven that the only time home field advantage is really such a big advantage is the Divisional round, which is probably moreso because you get to rest the week before. We already lost our chance at a bye a long time ago, so it’s not really a big deal to me. I’m just more concerned that we really don’t look like a very good team right now. When’s the last time we played a complete game in all 3 phases, seriously?

by Exystence on Dec 26, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

The home field edge does seem like something of a self-fulfilling prophesy.

The reason teams are at home during the Playoffs is they were better in the regular season and were in most cases the better of the two teams.

Yeah, he made the right read there.

He just needed to put more air on it, it was picked because the safety was able to cut under it. If he throws it ahead of whoever it was—Holmes I think?—that’s a TD all the way baby. But all in all he had a really good game.

by Exystence on Dec 26, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly, he hit his first 9 throws and looked great all day. I expected him to have a really tough time with this Bears defense but he impressed me today, there’s no doubt. Since we made the playoffs and we’re guaranteed the 6th seed in the playoffs, there’s not much pressure for him at home next week against Buffalo.

We are REALLY missing Jim Leonhard

Dude is more valuable than anyone really imagined I think. Our D just hasn’t been the same at all without him. And if our first pick next year isn’t a pass rusher, I swear man…

by Exystence on Dec 26, 2010 4:33 PM EST reply actions

not just a pass rusher

its not that we need a pass rusher we need a replacement for kris jenkins. SP is doing a good job and he earned the right to be a starter, but lets face facts…no team is rearanging their game plan to account for him. in the draft, or free agency we need a DT…an Albert hanswoth type…not albert hansworth but a big guy in the middle. we need a DT not a DE or a rushing LB we need a DT that commands the tripple team and is a sack threat each time

by willmpk on Dec 26, 2010 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

The simple question is

can the Jets learn from their mistakes and use their extremely talented roster to its strengths through the playoffs?

I see improvements and failures every game. We made a deep run last year. We’ve hung with every team we have played this year, sloppy football and all. SB is pretty unlikely but possible and not at all out of the question.

It was really stupid

that they were still giving LT carries in the 4th. Greene was the better back all day. Let LT come in on 3rd down, but he had no business taking hand offs in the 4th. It was an automatic no gain.

by David G on Dec 26, 2010 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

Remember in the beginning of the season we said fumble once and you're done for the game?

Greene remembers that because it happened to him. Unfortunately, there is a double standard on this team for better or worse. LT should have been relegated to 3rd down or passing downs.

by Timmaht on Dec 26, 2010 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

I see your point, but LD is one of the game’s best and Greene is a guy trying to establish himself who has issues holding on to the ball. The #3 RB of all time is gonna get a much longer leash.

Sanchez just waited too long. That punt really put them in the hole. Jets really should have had an up man to catch a short punt just in case. They lost 25 yards of field position and then they had to go way down field.

no argument

no argument from me Sp and (to a lesser degree) Devito are solid but in a 3-4 you need a superstar at the DT to make a 3-4 work…both are solid neither are superstars. I think this is the reason for lack of pass rush…may be ok in a 4-3 but we have a 3-4 and in a perfect world i would trade this years #1 pick to the lions for SHU…but that wont happpen so we need a SHU or Hanswoth type player…we need a super star DT more than a DE or rushing LB to generate somthing that resembles a pass rush

by willmpk on Dec 26, 2010 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with the fact we need a pass rusher badly

Not sure Jenkins can be looked at as a superstar DT anymore though. Going forward he might play scared.

Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

by YankeesJets on Dec 26, 2010 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

teams planned around kris jenkins….other teams plan through sione Pouha. SP proves he is a starter but Kris Jenkins was a superstar when healthy (not very often through his carrer). SP not a superstar and in a 3-4 defense the DT needs to a superstar not just solid

by willmpk on Dec 26, 2010 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

How did they go so far without Jenkins the last two years?

The D got better after Jenkins was out last year.

by YankeesJets on Dec 26, 2010 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

yes the D got better

yes the D got better but the pass rush suffered. part of the d getting better was the addition of Antonio Cromartie and Pool has been better than solid as well…in some ways an improvement over kerry Rhodes… but the majority of the D getting better was the addtion of AC.. that and teams have learned to not test the best CB in the leage DR. the past 2 years other teams were not afraid to try no they for the most part dont

by willmpk on Dec 26, 2010 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

I understand what you are saying but injuries happen

Jets need to just take the lemons they have and make lemonade. Rex also has to realize he doesnt have the personel he had in Baltimore and adjust already.

by YankeesJets on Dec 26, 2010 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

sometimes injuries "just happen"

Jenkins was injury prone for the past 5 years….it defies logic that the jets fron office get rid of washington before they knew if he would be 100% or 90% but yet they keep jenkins knowing that for the past 5 years he was in something like 8 whole games….again i say piss poor planning. The injuries to our safties JL and Smith are examples of injuries just happening… kris jenkins should have been cut 2 years ago and to plan a D line thinking he will be involved is piss poor from a front office that otherwise has done a fantastic job

by willmpk on Dec 26, 2010 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know if I would really say it defies logic...

As good as Leon might have been for us honestly he is closer to that dime a dozen type player. A NT like Jenkins is harder to come by in my opinion…I know it’s been said before that Jenkins was amazingly athletic for a guy his size. Yeah, we could probably find someone to occupy some blockers but if Jenkins can remain healthy he is a game changer. I don’t know how many people noticed how our def looked in that first game prior to his injury. The defense looked like it would have wreaked havoc on about any O-line prior to the injury. They played close in that Baltimore game but I think we may have been able to win that one if Jenkins played the whole game (yes even with Sanchez reigned in).

by Mac N Cheese on Dec 26, 2010 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

No offense, but I’m questioning how much you really know about our defense behind Jenkins, if anything at all.

the jets are my team…and i admit i am no expert. I understand that the Jets tried to replace him with Ratipoi…but he had an anckle injury (i think an achillies but not sure) that put him out for the season…I know that for the most part our D is way better than solid. and the addition of pool is in many ways an upgrade from rhodes

Baltimore is the best shot to take down New England, IMO, followed by Indy. The Ravens are capable of getting to Brady, and Peyton Manning gives anyone a puncher’s chance to pull out a win. Unfortunately, by losing to Chicago and getting the 6 slot, the only way the Ravens see the Patriots is if we’re already out.

Pleased that they are in the playoffs...

…but I have no illusions about a deep playoff run this year. The team is simply too inconsistent to have any faith. When the offense is good, the defense sucks, and vice versa. About the only reliable unit is the special teams on a weekly basis (with the exception of occasional shaky kicking from Nick Folk). Bottom line, we need some SERIOUS defensive line help in the offseason, because we are unable to generate a pass rush without blitzing two or more guys. Troubling stuff.

I thought it was a good call. I bet they practiced it 100 times and it always worked. Smith just dropped the ball. The next punt went 41 yards and was returned 36 by Hester. They should have tried it again. Everyone uses the gift of hindsight to say it’s a bad call. The defense didn’t have to give up a long TD pass on the next play either.

Think what took us to the dance last season....

and look at those same aspects this season. Does anyone believe that Green would’ve ceded that many points last season. A solid D at least keeps you in the game, and advances you deeper into the playoffs. We were one completion away from a win with less than a minute remaining, but there were simply too many points given away to win.

by oldskooljet on Dec 26, 2010 8:27 PM EST reply actions

It's bad that the run D is also failing now

Surprised to see Forte that effective. Jamaal Charles will go nuts on this D, and Cassell has been on fire, too. A win at KC in that environment will be tougher than their wins at Cinci and S.D. last year. The D line has to be addressed this off season. These guys will get smoked by Pats if they get that far, lets face it. And Cromartie was awful today, he’s so scared to tackle.

Couple quick points on clock management: 1) they should have let the Bears run their 2nd down play instead of calling timeout with 2:42 left. If they let it run down, the Bears would have had to run a 2nd down play just before 2 the minute warning and then they could have stopped it right after the 2 minute warning with the last timeout saving about 35 seconds. It might be a detail considering the pick, but it’s terrible that pro teams can’t figure this stuff out.

Defence

Where the hell was the D in the 1st 3 quarters??? We actually made Cutler look like a good QB and that’s been pretty hard to do this year. Didn’t like the play of the secondary today either, gave up way too many easy catches. We’re in and that’s great but unless the D picks it up we’re leaving the dance early and without the homecoming queen.

by leafs71 on Dec 26, 2010 9:14 PM EST reply actions

We're in--but dumbest call ever!

Great to be in the playoffs—but we have no hope besides becoming the luckiest team in NFL history or Mark leading us to shootout victories. The defense sucks. We’re out coached in every game. Was the fake punt the dumbest call in Jets history? Forget about the NFL, I don’t think there’s a college or high school in the nation who would make that call. With our defense, we have to play field position. That’s the way to win. The fact that Rex defended the call just shows me it’s the blind leading the blind. Just plain stupid. If it wasn’t for all that BS about winning the Super Bowl, I would feel a lot better about this accomplishment. Keep your fingers crossed. Go Jets!
