RT Damien Woody is Out for the Season

EAST RUTHERFORD NJ - SEPTEMBER 19: Rex Ryan Head Coach of the New York Jets greets Damien Woody #67 before the game against the New England Patriots on September 19 2010 at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford New Jersey. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)

Multiple sources are reporting via Twitter that Big Wood will need arthroscopic surgery on his knee and will be out for at least three weeks, which is all we have of the regular season.  He could be back for the playoffs, but will we be in the playoffs without Damien Woody?

This will be the first time since 2008 that a starting lineman doesn't make it for the game.  Are we finally going to see OT Vladimir Ducasse start?  Or will we stick with OT Wayne Hunter?

*UPDATE: Check out Rich Cimini's report for more info.

Oy. Lamarr Woodley and Julius Peppers both just popped wood at this news.

The Super Bowl was in doubt.

Now it is gone.

This is no small thing.

Let’s not get carried away. It’ll make the road a bit tougher, but it sounds like he can be back in a month or so.

This OL has been in disarray for a while.

The OL is the hidden heart of the offense, and Woody’s injury has subtly been causing all kinds of problems.

by ________key on Dec 13, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

I agree completely with that, but that’s just one facet of a team. You can cover it up with an extra lineman or a blocking TE on the field during plays that you expect to need time for. I trust the line coaches and Rex to make the necessary adjustments.

by SioneBAAOOOHA on Dec 13, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

We have already been “covering” it, with some pretty obviously bad results.

Honestly the team hasn’t even been the same w/o Faneca (communication and experiences on the OL count for a lot), even though Slauson has been good enough. Take both Faneca and Woody off last years OL and it is just too much to recover from.

If the Jets were operating like a well ordered machine I would agree, you just slide a few resources over, but instead the Jets have been leaky boat, problems on both offense and defense. Don’t you think that some of Sanchez’s issues (freaking out under pressure) come from the OL problems? Shave a half-second off his time in the pocket and things change hugely. Don’t you think that we can’t run the ball any more has something to do with Woody’s difficulties?

As for Rex and his ability to make adjustments, I’ve seen very little this year that suggests that the coaching staff is good at making adjustments at all.

by ________key on Dec 13, 2010 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

Our strategy for this week is simple. We keep letting James Harrison sack Sanchez and keep collecting 15 yards on the roughing the passer flags.

100%... but

Is there any way we can play Shotty at QB instead of Sanchez?

by Re1gn on Dec 13, 2010 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

If Ducasse has not improved tremendously since preseason, he shouldn’t get anywhere near the field IMO.

agree

He should at least be able to run block. If he can do that, we can help him. I don’t know much about line play, but I would imagine that playing tackle is a little easier than guard in terms of getting the calls right since you can only pass off to one guy. If his reads are somewhat simplified, then it should help his technique bc he can focus on it more. Or maybe I’m just blindly hoping against hope that the pick wasn’t a total waste.

by Crackback on Dec 13, 2010 3:30 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Tackle is not an easier position than guard. You have to protect the edge and do so against much better, much faster opponents. It would be pretty optimistic to think that a player who couldn’t become active at Guard now can play RT.

But this doesn’t mean that the pick is a waste. He was a project, and could take a few years.

by ________key on Dec 13, 2010 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

I think people aren't realizing Ducasse is a project player.

If anyone watched the preseason, hell even Hard Knocks they’d know Vlad will be seen later then sooner in a game situation.

by Timmaht on Dec 13, 2010 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

So in other words, Hunter really is the best available. I think we can actually survive with Warrior Wayne if we help him out a little.

VLAD will at least have to get some snaps this week—

Who’s starting the petition for Schotty for QB—that was a good idea

Vlad looked lost at guard in preseason

I know he was a tackle in college but i dont want him to start his career against peppers and harrison or woodley and if he does maybe we can see what brunnel or clemens has and sit sanchez til buffalo thats the only way i see him still being alive
