This is typical NFL fan think......."fire the OC because I know how we could score thirty points a game."

That is just so lame. LT is wearing down and your O Line is a little banged up and your QB is not playing very well right now and your receivers are not the world beaters you thought they were and finally..the other team out there is actually making some plays and concentrating on taking away what you do best.

If I were to check all the SB sites the only OC not taking a lot of flack right now is the Pats. I guess scoring around forty points a game will satisfy all the genius NFL fans.

Dude, you’ve been making comments all morning here, and not one has added anything productive to the site.

Read a bit more and you’ll see your comments are grossly inaccurate.

Okay, I have read further down......and still don't see anything that changes what I said.

One thing I have always admired about the Jets organization is it’s decisiveness. Upper management does not seem to wait too long before making a change. And usually a big change. Mangini, Favre, Ryan, Sanchez, Cromartie, Tomlinson, Braylon, and many more. If Schottenheimer is so bad, why aren’t the Jets doing something about him?

Is it possible that the Jets staff knows that the problems they have run deeper than play calling and game planning? As someone below says, firing BS will solve nothing unless a good replacement is identified and brought in.

I don’t think anybody would dispute the problems run deeper, but I also think it’s difficult to dispute that these are serious problems in their own right, and they predate the current HC and QB.

John, Do you think that the Jets management does not see his performance as a problem? Or is there something else going on here?

That’s maybe the least informed post I’ve ever seen.

This isn’t a sudden reaction by Jets fans – this has been building for YEARS. Obviously when your team fails to score a touchdown on offense in over two weeks, it brings the years of frustration to a head. But this has been an ongoing issue with this offensive coordinator, and it’s become more glaring lately.

Maybe you should do your homework before posting next time.

I’ll offer you guys a straight up trade. You guys take Daboll, and we (Browns) get Schotty. If you think you have got it bad, look at that OC.

No talking. Talking doesn't play football, talking isn't going to make you practice harder or play harder.

Not a chance.

And that’s an important point you make. Just firing Schottenheimer won’t fix anything unless he’s replaced by somebody legitimately good.

Gus Mahlzan is going to be looking to run away from Auburn.

I know, there’s the whole college-to-pros thing, but the guy has succeeded everywhere he has gone. Everywhere.

Watching the second half the Auburn/Bama game convinced me he knows when to abandon a game plan, and how to coach against what was working before. And it’s not just Cam Newton, he coached a pretty awful offensive roster last year to over 30 ppg without a mobile quarterback.

by psuwxman on Dec 13, 2010 8:40 AM EST up reply actions

Mahlzan’s a great college OC, but I don’t think his stuff would work in the pros.

Auburn’s pretty much running the single wing.

But they didn't lest year.

And they sure as hell didn’t when he was at Tulsa. They barely threw the ball.

He’s coached all different types of offenses, and he’s done it well.

And by threw,

I mean ran. Been up since 230am. It shows.

by psuwxman on Dec 13, 2010 8:43 AM EST up reply actions

His stuff is really gimmicky, though. A lot of trick plays, unbalanced lines, etc.

Very innovative guy, but that stuff doesn’t work in the pros full time, where guys are more experienced and more athletic.

On the same note, I think Schotty would be fantastic in college, where you actually can win on deception.

5 years

Schotty has been our OC for 5 seasons now. People weren’t happy with him under the Mangini era, and things haven’t improved under the Ryan Era. A solid argument can be made that our talent level on the offensive side of the ball has increased over the past few years, yet we still struggle.

Our team hasn’t scored a touchdown since Thanksgiving, and in all honesty the offense didn’t look impressive then. We won that game on the back of one player (Brad Smith) going above and beyond for a day.

No one on this blog has ever required schotty to put up gobs of points every week, but when our defense can hold a team to 10 points (which happened in 3 of our losses this season), it is not unreasonable to expect our offense to win. And it is not unreasonable to hear the fans call for the termination of the OC when he has been under poor public opinion for the past few seasons.

I have been calling for this for a while. It is not the execution of the plays that have been bothering me but the plays themselves. The Jets have been plain vanilla most of this year. Unless I missed it, Brad Smith has yet to throw a ball. Even the TV announcers are waiting to see him chuck one. Until this year, I thought Schottenheimer was one of the best OCs out there. We had some exciting plays and a couple of really good gimmicks. Something is wrong this year…

by th27patrick on Dec 13, 2010 8:15 AM EST reply actions

Brad Smith...

Does have 1 pass attempt. It was a touchdown to Dustin Keller.

It is part of the problem, we haven't went back to what's worked at all.

We aren’t working the middle of the field with quick slants and Sanchez is obviously prone to getting picked on out routes or flats patterns because we always go there. CBs are jumping routes at this point because it’s so vanilla.

by Timmaht on Dec 13, 2010 9:03 AM EST up reply actions

brad smith....

yup, and teams know it. There was one play against miami where i noticed the jets ran the wild cat and before the snap the defense was spread out. Then upon noticing smith under center the linebackers turned around, signaled for the safeties to come in, and they all stacked the box because they knew it was a run. Its obvious to everyone except schotty, hes gotta go.

The whole NFL is all upside down this year. Christ, looka at Oakland, KC, Jacksonville, Chicago, Dallas, just to name a few. Yes, the jets have dropped a game when they shouldn’t have but that actually should wake up players. There should be NO stars on the team, just play as a TEAM. The damn Cowgirls are playing like a team now and almost pulled it out on Philly with there 2nd string QB and that crappy O-Line.

Sanchez will be good but you gotta remember, when he came out for the draft, he was a starter for only one season at SC. He really needed another year or two. If you want to fire Schotty, I can think of a team that would hire him in a NY minute. See my earlier post!

I think he’s got three games left and potentially the playoffs to redeem himself, so I voted wait until next year. If we get mathematically eliminated with a game(s) left, then I say let’s give Callahan a shot.

by dvdvil on Dec 13, 2010 9:23 AM EST reply actions

This is something that has needed to be done for a long time.

It is not just the last 2 games that have brought this feeling out of us. The inconsistency of this offense, has been around since Shotty took over. This offense needs to wake up, and it all starts with the coaches. Just look at the Cowboys. They fire their coach, and the team responds. The blame should not all be put on Shotty’s shoulders, our O-line needs to play better, Sanchez needs to make better decisions and throws, and our receivers need to catch the ball.

I think this move needs to happen right away. The sooner the better. I don’t think Rex is up to the task. He prides himself on having all the confidence in the world in his guys. To give Shotty the axe would go against that. He needs to put his pride aside, and make the move that needs to be done.

Get busy winning or get busy losing.

by GangGreenMag on Dec 13, 2010 9:29 AM EST reply actions

Rex fired D-line coach Kerry Locklin last year, and they had been very good friends for years, longer than his relationship with Schotty, so I’m sure Rex would be up to the task.

by dvdvil on Dec 13, 2010 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

I hope you are right

I think it’s a little different though considering Shotty controls the whole offense, not just an aspect of it like the O-line.

Get busy winning or get busy losing.

by GangGreenMag on Dec 13, 2010 10:29 AM EST up reply actions

I am not in favor of changing coordinators at this point. I am in favor of Rex being a head coach and tweaking things that Schotty won’t. We are still in the driver’s seat for a playoff spot. We’re still going.

And one more thing people aren’t mentioning… Damien Woody’s injury and absence is just as bad for this team as anything Schottenheimer has or hasn’t done. All of the harassment Sanchez has been taking that has forced those hurried, ugly throws has come from the right side since Woody got injured. We need to let him heal completely so that our O-line is back to its full strength come playoff time.

by SioneBAAOOOHA on Dec 13, 2010 9:32 AM EST reply actions

It's not like changing the O-Cord would mess with our offense's consistancy

They haven’t been consistent all year

by GangGreenMag on Dec 13, 2010 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

Well..

Unless you count the consistently poor play calling, even when the offense does good its more that the players are making plays then it was a brilliant call.

by RhodesRocks on Dec 13, 2010 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

Dump him

You guys who are defending Schotty need to have watched more than just the last few games to form an adequate opinion. His body of work since he was hired FIVE YEARS AGO has been simply pathetic. You can blame the players all you want for their mistakes (and they’ve made plenty), but when you look at the amount of talent the Jets offense has, at some point the only logical conclusion is that they are not being adequately coached. Schotty has been guilty of poor game planning, slow or ineffective adjustment, and worst of all, predictability. How many of us out there can pretty much predict exactly what’s going to happen on EVERY PLAY!

Callahan is a former head coach, I say give him a shot and let’s see what he can do.

by struckanerve9 on Dec 13, 2010 10:24 AM EST reply actions

Now. Just get it over with...

The entire season we’ve been playing to the level of most teams on offense. We’ve started slow. We’ve killed drives with utter stupidity. Our next two games are against very good opponents in their home and if we make the playoffs that’s all we’ll face.

Anyone who thinks we should wait… why? I’d rather lose breaking a new guy in than lose letting the old guy continue to demonstrate that he should be canned.

by cult hero on Dec 13, 2010 10:53 AM EST reply actions

Schotty and offense

I’ve been saying it for so long. No quick slant plays, brad smith never throws the ball, LT21 runs up the middle, its so brutal.

Sanchez is holding the ball way too long. The team needs him to run the quick slant plays over and over again. Look at all the great offenses and WR’s. They dominated on the quick slant. Once the defense comes up, you throw it over the head, once they go back, you run the ball. WTF, its very simple football if its executed properly.

Watch the Lombardi doc…8 hrs on the sweep. Schotty tries to look like a genius out there and its blowing up in his face. He’s been the OC for all these years and yet the offense is always in the bottom when it comes to scoring points.

Make changes and get some damn results

by joeyjets on Dec 13, 2010 12:12 PM EST reply actions

Quick slants are so effective, yet we never run them. Even the “quick” pass plays we do run are destined to fail. We don’t utilize a players strengths, or hit them with a pass going forward so they can move. Our “quick” passes are to guys running parallel to the line of scrimmage where there is no chance to have much of a run after the catch. And these plays are even more common on 3rd down when we need the yards. Instead of a quick slant for 9 yards on 3rd and 6, we have our receivers running 4 yard patterns in a position where they can’t (other than cotchery) go anywhere after the catch.

by ghepburn13 on Dec 13, 2010 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

There should be an option that say's "After the Buffalo game... LAST YEAR!!!!"

That was the day that BS should have been canned.

Why you ask?

If your team had been averaging 8 yards per carry, how many times would you throw the ball? 30? no? why not? Because your QB had 5 picks in the game, and your running backs had put up 300+ yards? Well, you don’t know squat. BS is soo much smarter than you are, and he tricked everyone! He’s so smart, he managed to pull a loss out of the jaws of victory.

BS is a complete joke!!!

Remember Schotty was the QB coach when Brees was with SD and what happened? They let Brees go presumably they felt he stunk…then a real coach took him under his wing and now he is on his way to the Hall.

Brees? You mean that guy who is too short to be an NFL QB? Haha. Really, all our offensive woes in one way or another point to the OC. It’s that simple. Obviously, he’s not 100% of the problem (discipline problems fall on the HC and the players need to carry their own weight) but he’s the root.
