Back Where We Belong: With Losses By Miami And New England, Jets Re-Claim Division Lead

With their overtime victory over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field today, the (6-2) Jets re-claimed first place in the AFC East.

Last week was disastrous for Jets fans and players alike, as both Miami and New England won close games, and the Jets shot a blank at home and lost a big game.

This week, was a totally different story. Eric Mangini, the "Mangenius," came out with a great gameplan against New England, and the Browns upset the Patriots, 34-14. Furthermore, Miami went into Baltimore and was dominated, losing, 26-10.

Per ESPN:

American Football Conference
AFC EAST W L T PCT HOME ROAD DIV CONF PF PA DIFF STRK
NY Jets 6 2 0 .750 2-2-0 4-0-0 3-0-0 4-1-0 182 130 +52 Won 1

Thanks for keeping the seat warm, Patriots. We'll take it from here.

It'd be nice to play a good game from start to finish...

but can’t complain being 6-2 and being in first place.

I want to see...

The team that beat the Patriots again. I liked that team. Those guys really need to show up next week considering what Cleveland just did to the Pats.

We match up really well with Cleveland I think, much better than New England does.

But that’s for another post later in the week.

Well, I know it’s all about the match ups. Still, Cleveland brought the damn beat down.

I, like pretty much everyone here, want a game where I can leave look at the score at halftime and feel confident about the game. Is that too much to ask for?

Just once I want to see some real pressure on a QB

Jets always look afraid to grab the QB. Im tired of the hesitation, go for it already.

Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

Only bad thing will be Sanchez having to learn a new system.

I know we have a different defense but dont underestimate the guy. And can we please put the “Cheatriots” crap to sleep? It’s so tired and old.

Pennington isnt Peyton Manning but he doesnt make many dumb mistakes on the field. It might help Henne to see the game from the bench for a game or two.

I almost puked watching the postgame comments

Rex praises schotty, he cant honestly think he is any good, right? Even if youre friendly off the field you cant be afraid to hurt someones feelings or be critical of your OC after such awful playcalling. I sincerely hope rex doesnt just brush this performance off and not make some changes because this type of play can NOT continue or we will lose the rest of our games. Time to have a chat with your OC rex, and get pissed off, and just maybe stop heaping praise on your team when they go out and play like a damn UFL club. come on. light a fire under their ass

by MA Jets Fan on Nov 8, 2010 12:34 AM EST reply actions

Didyou expect Rex to bury Schotty there?

Im not the biggest Schotty fan but he cant be blamed for guys dropping the balls the past two weeks. I mean what the hell has happened to J-Co? Used to have the surest hands on the team now its like Braylon is rubbing off on him.

by YankeesJets on Nov 8, 2010 2:57 AM EST up reply actions

Are you serious?

I didnt expect him to crucify the OC, but dont have to give the guy a damn medal, his play calling was absolutely TERRIBLE how do you not see that? Three yard curls on 3rd and 9, short inside slants when the defense has 9 guys playing up on the line, then continuing to call those patterns when the defense consistently stops it, his inconsistency calling the run with one of the best offensive lines in the league, it is disgusting, the offense has no flow whatsoever. Like I said Rex wont crucify his guy to the media, but he should be very critical of this offense’s performance and make some changes to get schotty to pull his head out of his a**, there is not being able to execute and there is bad play calling, and a lot of yesterday’s performance had to do with a bad overall game plan and little to no modification or tweaking of that plan when it was proved it did not work.

by MA Jets Fan on Nov 8, 2010 9:14 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Rex will always keep things positive. He never said anything bad about the d-line coach we fired in the middle of the season last year, or Kerry Rhodes’ performance last year or Howard Green’s weight gain this year. He does take care of things behind the scenes though.

I’m so sick of seeing a 2 or 3 yard pass when we need 10 yards. It never works. It never will work. Maybe once every 10 tries you’ll get a controversial 1st down. Every game we played where we went conservative like that over and over on 3 and outs we hadn’t gotten a single TD(packers/ravens). The only thing that SOMEWHAT helps shotty’s case is that his plays came up big at the very end. But obv. we’d all rather have them come up big all game.

I really dont care if we won today...

Our offense looks like hell… so when are we going to go back to playing JET FOOTBALL?!? are we turning into the san diego chargers and giving up the run? A hundred yards rushing?!? wait was that for just one running back? nope both freaking UNACCEPTABLE. Lets get back to defense and run based offense! Yeah its great having all these new offensive weapons… But lets be realistic we are the jets, we run first, we run second and the recievers are to keep the defenders honest. I feel like shotty is going to make the Jets turn into the east coast version of the chargers giving up a successful run based offense for a west coast style pass first offense like the chargers did when they gave up on LT in the first place. We got a pair of the best running backs in the business and some awesome full backs… Lets use them and for the love of god… GET RID OF SHOTTY!!! His play calling is awful REX IF YOU READ THESE POSTS PLEASE JUST FIRE HIM AND CALL THE PLAYS YOURSELF!!!! okay im done with my rant now I can go to bed with a little bit of peace of mind.

In Rex Ryan we trust.

by Russell B on Nov 8, 2010 1:36 AM EST reply actions

Jets tried to run early, Lions stacked the box

When every team knows you are going to just run the ball, they will stack the box. I think something might be up with LDT too. Jets will not go very far if Sanchez never throws. Its very simple, if he doesnt have any chemistry with his WRs, Jets wont go far. Instead of crying about Schotty, cry about WRs dropping the balls and having them wrestled away last week. The NFL is a throwing league, ground and pound will only get you so far.

Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

by YankeesJets on Nov 8, 2010 3:05 AM EST up reply actions

How many times

Did we run the ball last year against 8 and 9 in the box successfully? Every game! because everyone wanted to make the rookie beat them through the air and we still ran it down their throat. I feel like since schotty is so buddy buddy with the players and a pussbag that he feels unrealistic pressure that a coach should not have to get balls to all these wideouts and get them touches. Well guess what Sanchez should not be throwing 40 times a game! it should be the other way around, 30 throws at the most, more rushes, its schottenheimers fault the offense has been awful and all you apologists should open your eyes and realize that.

by MA Jets Fan on Nov 8, 2010 9:20 AM EST up reply actions

We also lost a lot of those games

I don’t think the problem with the playcalling has to do with the run/pass balance. A team with as much offensive talent as the Jets should be able to do both. The problem is with the type of runs and pass plays Schotty calls. How many times did they run that stupid quick slant yesterday (or the bubble screen)? Right into the Lions defense, who were putting 8 and 9 in the box so the slant was essentially run right into them. Also, look at how we were successful at the end. We spread the field. Made it impossible for the Lions to stack the box and we were able to run the ball and pass with relative ease. Ground and Pound works great, but it can’t be all you do. No team is good enough to run effectively when the D stacks the box and you bunch up and run right at them.

by struckanerve9 on Nov 8, 2010 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

ding ding ding

too many short passes, which Sanchez sucks at, we need more medium, and deep routes.

As far as the run, very poor play calling, they kept running LT behind the guards, against Suh and Williams, just stupid, they need to run off tackle more.

by Judgegavel on Nov 8, 2010 7:26 PM EST up reply actions

I agree the play calling hasnt been very good the past few weeks

I think LDT is beginning to wear down a bit. Sanchez is throwing the ball too much and Im sure they will get back to ground and pound against the Browns. Rex is going to want this game pretty bad against his brother and Mangini.

Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

by YankeesJets on Nov 9, 2010 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

We're winning, but are we learning....

Seeing another W is great, but no one looking at our last 3 games can really be satisfied. A pass interference call at the 1 against Denver, the Green Bay loss, and the come from behind win at Detroit. No game in the NFL is a cake walk, but none of those teams are dominant (OK, the Packers are IR-laden, but shut us out).

I’m waiting for the dominant, smash mouth team I thought ‘d see this season. But I see too many three and outs. When your defense can hold the opponent to the points that the Jets have, we shouldn’t find ourselves in these game situations that often.

Teams will have disappointing games (thank you for yesterday, Pats), but we play at Cleveland this weekend. If anyone thinks Mangini doesn’t want a repeat performance against another former club, think again. We have to change our offensive game plan and become more of a dominant team. This offense does not say Rex Ryan to me.

by oldskooljet on Nov 8, 2010 7:39 AM EST reply actions

Yeah it certainly does not

Feel like Jet football, ground and pound feels more like three step drop and throw. I think yesterday was the first game that Shonn Greene’s YPC was higher than LdTs yet he still only got 10 carries with one of the best offensive lines in football, the guy ripped off runs of 12, 7, 7, then he just stops getting the ball. Why get away from something just when it starts working? and here I am thinking we go with the “hot hand” in the running game and yet it does not happen. Now Im not getting on LdT he played well catching out of the backfield there at the end, but it just makes you question schotty even more.

by MA Jets Fan on Nov 8, 2010 9:26 AM EST up reply actions

Couldnt agree with you more, MA. Preach it brotha.

Greene should be carrying the load 60/40, IMO. Plus he’s the kind of guy that gets stronger the more carries he gets.

by Crackback on Nov 8, 2010 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

A win is a win is win...

If the Lions didn’t miss the extra point on their second TD yesterday and if the Jets didn’t get the late pass interference call against Denver a few weeks ago we could be staring at 4-4 at the midway point of the season. The difference between this year’s team and the “same old Jets” of the past is that they’re winning the close games and the ones that frankly they shouldn’t have… but good teams are usually the lucky teams too. It wasn’t pretty yesterday but I’ll take it. LOL! ;-)

by Montcalm's Revenge on Nov 8, 2010 8:30 AM EST reply actions

Or...

If our OC wasn’t giving himself a perpetual unassisted rectal exam we could be undefeated.

 I like this game.

How about if the refs didn’t have their heads up their asses in Denver as well, maybe that non-TD they gave them wouldn’t have been called a TD and we wouldn’t have had to have our receiver blatantly dragged down by his face-mask to prevent a TD that he would have scored otherwise.

How about if the refs weren’t hanky-happy in game one and didn’t call that phantom PI on Wilson in the endzone, we onlt give up a FG there and win 9-6?

Or how about if Santonio Holmes doesn’t drop that TD catch-and-run against GB and we win that game 7-3?

We can play this game all day.

by Crackback on Nov 8, 2010 11:35 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with you...

but you must admit that they Jets have to stop shooting themselves in the foot all the time because at some point they’re not going to get the call or lucky break… In the last 3 games: too many stupid penalties(yes some were BS ticky-tack calls like the Ellis hit yesterday on Stafford… he was still IN-bounds), dropped passes and mishandling of the ball(Edwards’ fumble yesterday was a doozy—TWO HANDS ON THE BALL! Plus it killed the momentum they had gotten at the end of the first half and going into the second).
All I’m saying is: if they want to be a serious SuperBowl contender the sloppy, unforced errors have to stop. And when they play a weaker opponent they need to go for the jugular(like the Giants did against the Seahawks) early and keep them down(don’t let them hang around—grind em under!)

by Montcalm's Revenge on Nov 8, 2010 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

No. If they want to be Superbowl contenders, they have to win games any way they can and get hot in the playoffs. How you win means very little at this time of the year. All that matters is that you get a W. If we finish 12-4 or 11-5, nobody is going to care about a few close games that could go either way. Besides, you have to know how to win close games in the post-season. And not panic when you’re down 2 scores with only a little time left.

by Crackback on Nov 8, 2010 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

But if they make stupid errors\take stupid penalties now what makes you think they will solve the problem come playoff time? Also teams that have a reputation for having a lot of penalties usually end up getting called for things that the refs might let go for other teams… Point being: you can’t just assume a team can “turn it on” when the games really matter(December-January). Look at the Giants in 2008. First 12 games they went 11-1(coasting through the season). In December lost 3 out of 4 and then got smoked by the Eagles in the playoffs…they had won the SuperBowl the year before and I assume the “knew how to win a close post-season game”… I’m not saying the Jets have to be “perfect” every game but playing more disciplined now will certainly sow the seeds for a more profitable post-season don’t you think?

by Montcalm's Revenge on Nov 8, 2010 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

Its about resiliency. Im not saying that the lack of discipline in certain areas are ok. But its the teams that grind it out when things aren’t perfect that go to big things. Its the teams that can take a punch, and not play their best and still find a way to win that are the most dangerous. Its the teams that play in a bunch of hard fought, closely contested games that you have to be wary of. The battle-tested teams.

To win the big one, you have to have the ball bounce your way sometimes. But you also have to be able to fight your way through it when things aren’t going your way.

In the long run, i’d much rather this team win this way than winning easy. I’d much rather have Sanchez fight through a not-so-great game and put his team on his back and win it, than i would if he just easily dismantles whats in front of him. Because in the playoffs, he’s going to face defenses that can get stops against him, and offenses that can match him, and crowds that are deafening.

I want my team and my QB to be battle tested and confident when faced with adversity. Tough wins and tough losses keep you grounded and they keep you edged. An easy win would mean nothing to this team in the post-season. This tough win will make this football team better next week, and it gave them something that they can draw upon the next time theyre faced with adversity.

by Crackback on Nov 8, 2010 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

I'm with ya MA

You gotta wonder how “changeable” the game plan is when the situation warrants it. And when you have an opposing QB who can tack on yardage in a hurry, three and outs aren’t helpful. It’s extra pressure on the D who can respond most of the time but the offense needs to carry it’s share whenever possible.
