Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

Sheer Luck

I can't think of any other way to describe that win. The Jets played a terrible football game. They made boneheaded play after boneheaded play. This team had very little business beating the Detroit Lions today.

Sometimes having a special season requires finding a way to come through even when playing lousy ball so there's that, but this team has an awful lot of work to do.

Leave your thoughts below. I'll have the official recap up as soon as I can.

We seriously look like the Ravens last year

Probably the best team in football, but couldn’t find enough ways to hand games away.

Call it what you will

I call it a win.

I’m sweaty, on edge, too distracted to drink. This is what football is for. When your team pulls off a miracle on the road in OT in the face of defeat.

and on the other hand I don’t think any team in the NFL feels confident when they play us.

Peyton Hillis is a BEAST. Thats the story of that game. The guy just went off on the Pats.

by Crackback on Nov 7, 2010 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

Good game guys.

It was exciting til the end. The refs jobbed both teams, but you guys came out with the hard fought last quarter.

I will say this though, fuck Trevor Pryce. “Roughing the Kicker” is not near enough punishment.

by Mavyrk on Nov 7, 2010 4:35 PM EST reply actions

to be fair those 3 points

turned into 6…

"Pass me the damn ball, I don't need a pick at all, And don't worry about my shot Cause I'm a get that off..Yea, I drops 40 on your double team...Then I drop 81 on another team."

by YoungMoney24 on Nov 7, 2010 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

We had to throw it.

It was the Jets who made it seem bad by running the clock down themselves, no one could know they would do that. They had plenty of time to get down the field if they actually stopped the clock instead of checked down in the middle all day.

by Mavyrk on Nov 7, 2010 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think you had to throw it. It was unlikely to get a first down, and with how horrible our offense was playing all day, it would have made most sense to run as much time as possible.

by random122 on Nov 7, 2010 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

Truly.

it would have made more sense to take the sack, honestly.

Which is what Schwartz basically told Stanton. Unless there’s a touchdown opportunity wide open, don’t throw the ball. Stanton threw it to the backfield. He gets the blame, not the coach. That’s all I’m saying.

by Mavyrk on Nov 7, 2010 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

The 3rd string QB had to throw it? I dont know about that. But it was a weird game with the refs making bad calls against both sides and something I don’t want to be subjected to again this year.

by xDieseLx on Nov 7, 2010 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

I get that.

But saying it was a dumb ass play might be calling it a little bigger than it really was. Stanton messed up the play, not the Coach. But Schwartz stepped up and took the blame in the interview, so I respect that.

by Mavyrk on Nov 7, 2010 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

Bull

Pryce was knocked into the kicker by his own man, nothing malicious about the play. They need to throw the ball downfield more early in games I think

Because half the yards came on two big plays.

by nationalist88 on Nov 7, 2010 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

The Holmes throw was a great pass too

its amazing as much as people complain about his arm strength I think Sanchez has been at his best throwing medium and long this year, and at his worst on those short dumps he misses horribly on.

by Judgegavel on Nov 7, 2010 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

That’s true, it’s weird how he seems to have no accuracy or touch whatsoever on short throws..

by nationalist88 on Nov 8, 2010 12:13 AM EST up reply actions

Be fair John...

I agree to some extent, but credit has to be given to Sanchez, as awful as he’s played at times this year and particularly most of this game, he put the team on his shoulders when he had to and led us back to the win, he is something special. Also Folk is clutch.

by Judgegavel on Nov 7, 2010 4:37 PM EST reply actions

But. But. But.

Yes, we played horrifically, we should have lost.

However, NE played even worse, lost to the Browns, and we’re back in first place.

Of course, now we need to not do what they did next week…

by nationalist88 on Nov 7, 2010 5:27 PM EST up reply actions

Hell I guess they were giving up then...

because that was one of the worst rushing performance by a team I have ever seen, to try to give it to them to run out the clock is suicide.

by Judgegavel on Nov 7, 2010 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

So that means.

that Stanton is incapable of making a throw that is caught by a receiver? Really?

by Mavyrk on Nov 7, 2010 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

No but certainly completing one 81 yarder on the Giants proves nothing

Stafford was making tremendous throws against us, and that was the only place the Lions were having success, Stanton is a journeyman third stringer, his chances of having the same success is very unlikely, and looked awful during his time in there.

by Judgegavel on Nov 7, 2010 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

Stanton threw a 12 yarder that turned into an 81 yarder when the defender tried going for the pick. Don’t get hyped over that.

It’s not really that simple. They’re not beating elite teams playing like this. They need to fix several things. The running game is not getting it done, the play calling is ridiculously predictable, the penalties are stupid, and although the defense is playing well, they need to be told it’s legal to get a turnover once in awhile.

That being said, this game bears out my favorite saying – bad teams do more to lose games than good teams do to win them sometimes, and the Lions made more mistakes than the Jets did. The Jets are a good team, and they capitalized. I’ll take 6-2 through eight games, but as Bart Scott just said postgame…we’re happy with the record, but not necessarily the team’s play.

I have to agree. I said it in the game thread…but I think the best we can hope for is a head coach position next year. For some reason he isn’t being held accountable for an anemic offense with the tools we have.

for some reason beyond our understanding

the ownership has been in love with the guy for years.

This.

I get the feeling that Rex is even twinkle toes around him.

I've been saying it for 3 years.

Fire Schotty. Who’s gonna hire him now?

If the Jets have a playoff run or better

I imagine other teams will want to at least interview him. Happened before.

I don't doubt it

I sincerely hope it happens, actually, but either way hope he’s gone soon (fired or hired away)
I really hope Callahan takes over.
I understand how valuable he is to the O-Line, but I’d like to see him call plays too!

Sanchez might of been joking when he called plays in pre-season and scored so easily, and said Schotty you suck-but there is obviously some truth to that!

You may be right, I may be crazy

While it might have been “lucky” to pull out this win, that is what championship teams do, and that is why they are the Lions. Championship teams pull out wins that they might not be supposed to get. We won, they lost. They played lazy football for four minutes and it cost them.

by dhrodgers52 on Nov 7, 2010 5:19 PM EST reply actions

Youre not crazy, and that wasn't luck.

We made plays and we won. NO apologies necessary.

by Crackback on Nov 7, 2010 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

If anything we were far from lucky. We beat ourselves up early and had to work twice as hard to get the W. This is big (even if it is Detroit).

Bigger picture is there aren’t many teams that will kick away games like this if the Jets keep playing the way they have been. Luck was on our side today.

They were lucky to get some of the calls that they did. Was that really a PI on Smith? Late hit on Ellis?

And they were absolutely lucky that Pryce decided to take a 3-foot bong hit and do 5 shots of whiskey before that FG.

The Jets finished last season on a 7-2 run including the playoffs.

Combine that with this season and they are 13-4 since the 1-6 streak.

Last season we lost a 4 point game to the Dolphins, a 3 point game to the Bills, a 5 point loss to the Dolphins, a 2 point loss to the Jags and a 3 point loss to the Falcons.

All games we could have won, be it that they would have been ugly wins. A year later no one remembers an ugly win from a good loss. All that matters is wins and losses. This year the Jets are a championship Caliber team because they are winning the tight ones.

I don't agree totally

Yes it wasn’t the best looking game but the way these games are being called is making it hard for anyone to play football out there. The Jets found a way to win and thats all that counts. I love the W ill take it and we can worry about these Browns who just beat the brakes off of NE…GO JETS

I wonder why Detriot let Suh kick the extra point

If their punter kicks it in then we probably lose this game.

by secret defense on Nov 7, 2010 6:08 PM EST reply actions

Harris.

Kicked it off. Suh only did the extra point.

Harris is a terrible placekicker, that’s why Suh did it.

by Mavyrk on Nov 7, 2010 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

A couple answers.

1) Suh played soccer. He’s probably the second best FG kicker this team has after Hanson went down.

2) Harris is our holder. Holding is a much harder job than it seems.

3) Suh was only like, a sixteenth of an inch (in terms of english on the ball) from making that kick.

4) Can you imagine how NUTS the place would have gotten in terms of noise if he had made it? Pack it up, Jets.

by Mavyrk on Nov 7, 2010 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

Suh also said that he didn’t get a chance to warm up.

Correct.

We probably should have called a time out to give him a second to stretch. Schwartz has taken the blame entirely for that.

I guess the Jets fanbase just has a hard time believing our #2 FG kicker is, in fact, a DT.

2 minute

I read Sanchez talked Rex into staying in the 2 minute drill in overtime. Funny it didn’t say he talked schotty into it. Time for schotty to go, I think scotty’s game plan is not helping Sanchez develop quicker. Let the kid open up a little and make some of his own calls sometimes.

by ocjet on Nov 7, 2010 10:58 PM EST reply actions

This

It was clear early on that the Lions were jumping all the short routes, but it took until the end of the second quarter to finally throw deep? Maybe some of that is Sanchez looking for the quick read, but jesus, you can’t throw short for the first 25 minutes of a game. And this is not new, they did it in Denver and they did it all game vs. baltimore. We have downfield threats in Edwards and Holmes, effing use them please. Schotty’s play calling really is crap. Also, LT was great on the last drive, but he’s looked slow getting to the edge the last couple games. On several runs, he should have had more yards. We need more Greene in my opinion.

Here’s the quote and a link to the article:

Sanchez begged for a hurry-up offense. Coach Rex Ryan relented. And that was that.

"The kid’s been trying to get us to go more two minutes," Ryan said. "And I’m a ground-and-pound guy and all that kind of jazz. At the end of the day we said, ‘All right, let it go kid.’ "

Exciting win!

I’m stuck in Beijing. No TV. But fortunately get ESPN 1050 broadcast. Penalties must stop. Sanchez must get more consistent and improve his accuracy. Hard to criticize Shotty without seeing the game—but he seeme lost for most of the game. Cleveland is a team we must defeat. No way will they run on us. Rookie QB against shutdown D. Jets offense needs an 80-yeard, five-minute drive in first quarter. That’s the way to win championships!
