Should the Jets Sign Laveranues Coles?

With Jerricho Cotchery's groin injury keeping him out of the lineup the next few weeks, does anybody think it might be a good idea to give Laveranues Coles a ring? Since we are past the first week of the season, the Jets would only be on the hook for his salary at the veteran's minimum as long as he is on the roster. The team could release him once Cotchery returns.

I have stated my concern over Brad Smith losing practice reps in other spots while serving as a third receiver. There's more, though. Smith is not a great option at receiver. While he has developed into a terrific weapon, his route running and hands prevented him from developing into the quality receiver the team initially wanted him to become.

Coles would probably be an upgrade out of the slot. He's a good route runner and already knows the system. If Hard Knocks was any indications, the coaches like him.  Coles seems like he would be a decent stopgap to me. What do you think?

for sure

Coles would be a nice addition, knows how to run routes and has good hands. Loss some speed but in the slot it doesn’t really matter, good route running does.

I apologize in advance to Crackback who probably was so upset reading this he spit his coffee onto his computer screen.

Lol. There was a quick and sudden wretch, but no coffe stains. ; )

As predicted, I say no.

Even if he does know the system, he’s been on the decline and hasn’t played meaningful football in a while. By the time he gets his sea legs back and gets his timing down with Sanchez, Cotchery will be ready to come back.

Give Braylon and Holmes and Keller more touches. Or give a guy with promise a few meaningful reps. Take the opportunity to develop a Cumberland/McKnight/Turner. Maybe create new ways to get BSmith involved.

I like each of these alternatives better than bringing in Coles for nostalgic purposes.

this

I loved coles throughout his tenures with the Jets but the time he gets into game shape Cotch will be ready to return. I’m all for your suggestions aside from getting McKnight reps. I’d rather buy his ass a ticket for a carnival cruise and wave bon voyage.

Its amazing how much Hard Knocks has shaped peoples opinion of McKnight. Can we see the kid perform in a real game before we pass judgment on him? Lets get him the ball with some space and see what he’s got. He has exactly zero carries/catches in his NFL career and people don’t even want to see him have any. Its crazy.

by Crackback on Nov 16, 2010 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

I havent watched one minute of hard knocks. I saw him as a bum at usc and was pissed as hell when the Jets drafted him. Also, I was a big Leon Washington fan. Eventually he has to be given an opportunity, I agree, just let it be a game where the outcome is a foregone conclusion before giving him meaningful reps. Do you think he’s been inactive by accident?

by Ozone on Nov 16, 2010 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

I think he’s got some really really good talent ahead of him and that their trying to reform him into a more complete back. Leon isn’t getting any RB reps with the garbage backs they have over there, so lets take it easy on McKnight until we see him get some NFL reps.

by Crackback on Nov 16, 2010 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

McKnight’s got physical talent, I’m not doubting that. He’s just on his way to see the wizard looking for both a brain and a heart. Also, his case of fumblitis hasnt subsided for years. The fact that they were giving him a look a cb doesnt speak well for him either.
As far as Leon, he’s currently leading the nfl in kr avg at 31.0 to go along with 2 tds. Also in limited pr duties 23.8 per, although carroll chooses to go with Golden Tate, although he’s not as productive. I don’t know why he’s not getting more reps at rb, only guess is because pete carroll is pete carroll.
I also don’t get why some defend Joe McKnight like he’s their little sister.

No they shouldn't. Coles is washed-up. There's a reason he's still a Free Agent in case anyone hasn't noticed.

Good Grief…..Plus, it’s only going to be a week or two for Cotch. We put Brad Smith out there in Cotch’s place, we still good. We still have Holmes….Braylon….Keller….and even LT.

by BrockRocks on Nov 15, 2010 8:22 PM EST reply actions

Coles is not a good option. Better off going with some young unknown or some practice squad meat if we must bring another person on board.

I voted yes but

Maby the Jets see what Patrick Turner has in him. From what i recall he wasn’t gifted with exceptional speed but having a 6’5" target and DK over the middle is a scary and difficult thing to defend against.

I voted yes but I like the Turner idea

Doubt either happens though.

Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

by YankeesJets on Nov 15, 2010 9:03 PM EST up reply actions

Keller will essentially be the 3rd receiver and I agree with flix, we should give turner a chance before signing coles.

by NJNETS29 on Nov 15, 2010 8:48 PM EST reply actions

I voted yes.

As much as I love Brad Smith, and I hope to see the best from Patrick Turner, if we were in the same situation as J-Co’s catch, I would rather have to depend on Coles. Having said that, I don’t think they’ll re-sign him.

Better Options

There must be a way to fill the need and perhaps find a longer term solution. Turner sounds like a better way to go.
Sit Cotch for 2 games at least.
Sounds like heresy after the last 3 weeks but we should be able to overcome an injury to our 3rd receiver againts Texas and Cincy – especially when the first 2 are Edwards and Holmes and we have a good TE.

Oh yeah, No, he’s not the same player he use to be.

Who gives you the best chance of winning

It seems at worst Cotchery will miss the Houston game and the Thursday night game against the Bengals… not much time…Even though Coles went through training camp, how effective could he be in the next two games.
The true “third receiver” on this team is Keller which leaves Smith as your fourth receiver, not a bad alternative.Brad gives you size, blocking ability, threatens the reverse and is a below average receiver. If you want to go 5 wide, LT is your man.
Watching the Patriots last night crush the Steelers, using multiple TE’s. The Jets have carried Cumberland on this roster all year ( never active ) apparently believing that he has some potential, opprotunity comes knocking. Mulligan TE is another alternative, a Hartsock clone, if you like Ground & Pound and three TE’s, it’s an alternative. Turner and Payne are on the practice squad, waiting for a chance. The most bizarre alternative, is RB Joe McKnight in the slot, think about it , crazy, but it could be dynamic for this offense( remember that Coles was originally a RB).
Seeing the Patriots use of TE’s , I certainly like Keller and Cumberland 6’4 255 at TE both running a sub 4.6

Seems like a lethal combo. Match-up nightmare.

who you going to cut?

I like Coles, but who you going to cut to make roster space. We already lost Woodhead making room for someone we really didn’t need longterm. So I say no.

by wwhyme on Nov 16, 2010 7:42 AM EST reply actions

Literally the first thing I thought of when Cotch got hurt was, “I wonder if Coles stayed in game shape…”

by Down Since '86 on Nov 16, 2010 10:55 AM EST reply actions

To play “Devil’s Advocate,” we don’t know that no team has tried to sign Coles…he came out in the media on more than one occasion and said that if he got cut he’d retire…he wanted to retire a Jet…just sayin’…

by Down Since '86 on Nov 16, 2010 11:01 AM EST reply actions

I just don't see the appeal with Coles.

He’s not a big target, he’s not fast, he’s not a good blocker, he’s old and declining…

Other than wanting a guy you used to root for 10 years ago to win a ring, what makes him a more attactive option than guys we already have on our roster? Just about all of whom we haven’t even seen in live action.

by Crackback on Nov 16, 2010 11:18 AM EST reply actions

He always had good hands and wasnt afraid of getting hit ..

…but relax, I dont think this has any chance of happening.
