Frightful Offense

Photo

Thus ends the 5 game winning streak. The Jets lost to the Packers 9-0 today at the Meadowlands to fall to 5-2. It was a game that did a lot to resemble the last time they were shut out. It was in 2006 at home against another NFC North opponent. Just like that day, the defense did a top notch job, but the offense was horrific.

There are plenty of goats in this one. The quarterback will get a lot of justified heat, but there were a lot of guys who did not come through.

Considering how out of sync this team looked, expect to hear plenty of people questioning Rex Ryan's decision to give the team the entire bye week off.

Leave your thoughts below. The official recap will be up later.

Looks like the games we lose will be all on the O.

Darrelle Revis once won a game of Connect Four in three moves.

I REMEMBER THE STEELERS GETTING DOMINATED EARLY IN A SEASON BY THE GIANTS AND EAgles

what happened later that year, they won the super bowl. Lets play our best ball in December and January.

Schotty should be tarred and feathered.

22 total rushes is absurd. That team has no D-Line. So what do we do? Throw it on what seemed like every first down.

by Crackback on Oct 31, 2010 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

Yep. Should've been pounding it all day

Sucks that they wasted a fantastic effort by the D.

by gogomets on Oct 31, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

They couldn't pound it all day.

The problem was the poor field position. The second series was a three and out of 3 LT runs. The Jets were getting boxed in in the first half. And GB was daring the middle long throw, playing the run heavy. The Jets are not a POWER run team, they are a finesse, zone blocking run team. They have to run with at least the threat of the pass.

The fake punt was the Jet chance to get out of the field position game which they were losing. If they could just get to mid field they could start running. But from the 15 there was no way to run the ball.

True, we’re usually pretty good with field position. We couldn’t catch a break on it all day. The field position game was very crucial for our offense.

Completely. It is what kept us from being able to run the ball.

Tim Masthay

i never really wanted Tim Masthay to win the battle for our punting job.
I favored the Aussie, Chris Bryan (who signed with Tampa Bay as soon as we released him) and said so all summer.
Just last week, Brandon, the manager of APC, flat out said, “Tim Masthay stinks!”

That said, Masthay was our man of the hour yesterday, and gets my game ball.
Five of his eight punts ended up inside the 20.
That included his first four, which averaged 47 yards, and left the Jets starting at, respectively, the 18, 14, 13 and 10.

For now, Masthay has earned himself a respite from my criticism.

What the hell are you talking about we're not a power running team?

When your defense is playing lights out, and your QB can’t hit the side of a barn, you go back to the old familiar and wear their asses out. You stop with all the run/pass balance on first down BS and you run, run, run punt for a few series. Its was shameful for Greene to only have 6 carries in this game.

Schotty coaches to the stats. He tries balances his calls instead of finding some thing that works and making them stop it. When you’re not running smooth, you go to your bread and butter: the run. Let the big dog piss in the yard. You don’t bail out a thin D-Line by calling passes on first down.

And why do we have to go for 20 yards on every 3rd down???

by Crackback on Oct 31, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree in the sense that LT is the primary back. LT vs. SG is finesse vs. power in my opinion and we’ve been going primarily with finesse. Definite shame that we’re not using Greene much. I hope this strategy will work out as well as it did last year…

We are not a power running team. You may wish we were, but we are not.

If you pull the safeties up, we are NOT going to run the ball.

I completely disagree. I think if we slammed in there enough times they would’ve wilted. We did it all last year. Its the exact same personnel that seem to be as capable as before.

Although it’s not the exact same personnel, that is what we should be doing. Especially because I don’t like Sanchez throwing so much, he’s not there yet.

Nor have they tried. Luckily Sanchez has played well enough to win in all but 2 games. But he didn’t have it today, and running heavily should’ve been the strategy from the outset because their D-Line had no depth. They were overplaying the run early in hopes that we would go away from it. They are ecstatic that we obliged.

CB, I think you are confused in believing that this is a power running game. They were losing the field position game and COULD NOT RUN the ball. GB stacked against the run.

The problem with Schotty is that he would not throw to where the field was open, in the middle, mid-deep.

I think ou avoid those throws as much as possible with a young QB. When you have a big back and an o-line that you know can wear an opponent out if given the oppotunity, this was the perfect game to go with that plan.

You are in comic book land.

This team does not blow other teams off the ball. Just look at the run calls. The line opens specific holes, it does not get a push most of the time.

You can’t be serious. Greene had 6 carries!!! And the run calls were quirky for the most part. They would get push if they kept at it. The same thing happened last year: we would have much less success in the first half, then we would crack off big gains in the second.

But now Schotty is going to be balanced come hell or high water. Instead of exploiting an obvious weakness (defensive line depth), he’s going to be the opposite of obvious at all costs.

I say, “F that.” Do what you are good at doing and make your opponent adjust.

1). If they are stacking the box and jumping on the short passing game keep running, and running and running until they get tired.

I am saying:

2). If they are stacking the box and jumping on the short passing game make them pay middle deep which is what the defense is giving you, then run the ball when you have better field position.

3). If they are stacking the box and jumping on the short passing game resort to trick plays and keep throwing short.

I made this point about a couple weeks ago, if the Jets wide receivers are so good, why aren’t they making Mark Sanchez a better QB. I know the Jets got hose for two calls when GB took the ball from their wide receivers. Bad calls, but WTF is the receivers doing not coming down with those passes. The Receivers loss this game.

by BIG OH!!!!! on Oct 31, 2010 4:37 PM EDT reply actions

+10000

The receivers were terrible. Schotty is horrible at calling a game in which he has to get the defense to move. He doesn’t seem to understand how to take advantage of the scheme a D is running. Our receivers were terrible today. Sanchez was 16 for 38 with 6 drops, and 2 Int’s that also should have been caught. The Holmes drop was horrible. The entire D was moving to the other side, and he had 2 steps on the defender. The ball was waiste high, and he had an easy catch, and BLAM!!!! he dropped it.

by jetsbill on Oct 31, 2010 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

its not on the receivers. They didn’t play well, but they weren’t in the game for 3 quarters. You can’t play not to lose for 3 quarters and then expect to play to win.

I'm not sure

If we were watching the same game. The drops killed us. It started with Shonne Greene’s dropped screen when he had blockers, and nothing but a corner and safety to beat. Then Holmes drops a probable TD, then we drop multiple 3rd down completions, then our receivers drop 2 more balls into the lap of defenders for turnovers. I’m really not sure how you can say it’s not on the receivers without joking.

If we were watching the same game. The drops killed us.

it was about game plan. The drops killed us, but they LARGELY came late in the game when we already had burned through three quarters with horrible play calling. Many of the early “drops” were actually very inaccurate throws by Sanchez in the short game.

The way that they game was called was such that they were throwing into the teeth of the defense with short routes, with Sanchez never throwing the ball with accuracy. To expect to win the game late, it doesn’t surprise me that drops happened. There was ZERO rhythm to this offense, and it affected everyone. Nobody was in sync, and this was the game plan’s fault.

Yes, if the receivers had caught the ball it would have been a different story. But it should have been a COMPLETELY different story.

by jetsbill on Oct 31, 2010 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

It is wrong to think that this game was about dropped passes and a bad INT call.

It was about GB knowing that the Jets were going to game plan the run and short pass, and completely stacking the box and jumping all the routes. And believing that if they left the middle of the field open to the pass the Jets would not throw it. It was a calculation and it wasn’t until the 4th quarter that the Jets finally decided to take what the defense was giving them.

It was then that dropped passes made a difference, but it should never have come into that. They should have forced GB to back their safeties off, and they would have been able to run the ball.

It was the same plan that the Ravens had, and the Jets, as usual, are VERY slow at adjusting to what is being done on offense. Instead of adjusting and taking what the defense is giving, Schotty throws in trick plays to try to out hustle the hustle, trick plays that don’t have a high percentage of completion. He is TOO into his chess game.

Just throw the ball middle, not short, and when you get some field position run the ball hard.

the drops were killing us all game, and would have set the end game up differently. schotty did sort of fail on the play-calling, but the screens were finally there, so the future is brighter as long as we throw them, to LT or Greene learns to catch. sanchez missed some reads and threw some inaccurate balls, as usual, so he gets a piece of the blame too.

You would think that would have been one of the things on the checklist during the bye-week. That was frustrating.

by Crackback on Oct 31, 2010 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

He simply cannot throw it. Maybe he has big hands or something. But it is not an effective play call. And its too bad because LT is an excellent screen receiver.

The deep ball was there for them all game

but they never wanted to try it. Only that one time to cotch. They had a freaking linebacker on Cotch there.

by David G on Oct 31, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

All game.

Not the deep sideline ball, but the deep seam and cross, just behind the safeties who were up.

By the time they went to it, it was already too late. They should have done it in the first Q.

Pretty disgusting performance

When you combine 6 drops with a lot of inaccurate throws, and not much of a run game, this is what happens. Some thoughts:

1) A little too much wildcat. It wasn’t doing much, why keep going to it? And, how about letting Smith throw one again if you do?

2) Going for the fg into the wind on 4th and 2 was a pussy move by Rex. You’re a running team, run it down their throats.

3) If you want to do a fake punt, how about waiting for a 4th down where you have to gain less than 15 yards and you are around mid field instead of at your own 15? It was more of a stupid move than a gutsy one.

Also, not sure how Sanchez spent his off week

They said on the broadcast he was home and in bed every night at 9:30 p.m.? I have a friend who lives in Vegas that claims he is positive Sanchez was partying for several nights there on the bye. Not that he shouldn’t unwind, I would do the same, but he looked very bad today, left a lot of open receivers out there. It wasn’t just drops.

by David G on Oct 31, 2010 5:04 PM EDT reply actions

I'm not so sure

I didn’t think he looked bad at all. He did miss Edwards on that roll out pass. (Which by the way, seems to always be open, and gains great yards when the roll out pass is called). But damn, the drops killed us. We had 8 dropped balls (6 drops, and 2 int’s that won’t be included in the drops stat but definitely were).

Two years in a row

Two years in a row off the bye Rex has given them a full six days off heading into the bye. Two years in a row, two lifeless Jets defeats. Maybe this team isn’t mature enough, or lacks the leadership, or SOMETHING to handle that. Bottom line, I’ll bet Rex works them a little harder next year.

Terrible playcalling. Bad execution. Just a terrible offensive performance by all involved.

Defense was good, at least.

Gotta put it squarely on the coaching for not preparing the team given the extra week.

You’ll get no argument from me on that point.

A lot of his throws were sailing high

all day. Everyone on offense played poorly though.

mutual possession

i was in a sports bar and didn’t have any sound. how were those two interceptions called interceptions they both looked like textbook mutual possession. the first was challenged and upheld, but i have no idea how. can anyone fill me in on what they were rulling?

by Crimetime Island on Oct 31, 2010 5:10 PM EDT reply actions

No clue. I don’t even know how they could be classified as interceptions. If anything, they were catches and the receiver was stripped.

Strange...

How this year has been so fortuitous 4 Sanchez with missed int. opportunitys by the D that this game its 2 of his better throws that get picked.

I may not be the most noble of men but in a town of lepers, im the one with the most fingers.

Patriots stop the Vikings on 4th and 1 at the goal line. Boo.

Oh believe me, we’ll be lying to ourselves until the bitter end, or at least until New England officially wins the division.

Again.

You're the kind of Jets fan I can't stand.

They lose one game and you throw in the towel and start crying the dreaded “Same Old…” I can’t even write it, the term disgusts me so much. It’s not the end of the damn world! A lot of players on offense (defense was stout as usual) made too many mistakes. Get ’em fixed and move on.

Also, for those who don't think the Sanchez was the problem here

(aside from the play calling), recall that Sanchez compared his responsibilities to that of a point guard with lots of weapons. As a point guard it is his job to orchestrate the offense, to put it in rhythm, and this is done with timing and precision of passing. One point guard could pass a very catchable pass that does not result in a hoop, but a better one puts the ball right were it should be and the hoop is easy.

When everyone is dropping passes (both on the court and on the field), then you look to the point guard.

Schotty paralyzed the offense which his “chart” play calling, to be sure, and the play calling took the rhythm out of the offense, but Sanchez himself was all over the place such that when it came time to make a play and decide the game nobody, not the receivers, not the running backs, and not the QB could pull it together.

It is the job of the QB to change that, to set a new tempo, and to do so with the right reads and precise throws.

I feel bad for the guy, because he tries to be a student of the game, and seems so dedicated to getting better. But for whatever reason, it’s not happening. The last drive when we got the ball back with no timeouts and almost 4 minutes left, he couldn’t manage a freakin first down, much less a game winning drive. Pathetic.

Like Howie Long said, Rex Ryan has high aspirations for this team, but the Jets will only go as far as Mark Sanchez can take them. Today was another great example of what happens when he’s tasked with winning a game – it becomes a loss. There are a lot of Jets fans who insist on kidding themselves about Sanchez. I am not one of them.

Then last 4 mintues was telling. He locked onto Cotchery

and nothing else, pretty much.

He is a student of the game, and I believe long term, but this year is a crapshoot.

Um…maybe if freakin Cotchery would hold on to a pass he would have. He dropped TWO IN A ROW that would’ve been first downs! Don’t blame Sanchez for dropped passes. He can’t throw AND catch it.

Hey Moron!

You mean the same Sanchez who won us the game in Denver in the last drive?

The Same Sanchez who torched the NE D, the same Sanchez that won us that Miami game!

Give your head a shake you idiot! and actually watch the games. Sanchez did try but 8 drops aint gonna help, the wasnt effective since they had 8-9 in the box.

Bottom Line.

Playcalling was atrocious. Why Rex tried a fg on 4th and 1 is beyond me. Talk about going conservative…

by DJMATTN on Nov 1, 2010 12:33 AM EDT reply actions

Because it would’ve tied the game. Why wouldn’t you try a FG?

B-Schot for Predient: Then maybe he'll leave

Dropped passes, poor blocking and an all too inconsistent QB no doubt killed this team. But Rex, and particularly B-Schott, seem to have to learn the game-within-the-game every damn week, and the simple act of coaching. Too much time off during a Bye-Week it too easy an excuse, for if they came in three or four times, the coaching would still kill this team.

If Ryan is to survive as the coach of the NY Jets, he’s going to need a new Offensive Coordinator that can adjust to the changing dynamics of a game. In it’s lost in last years AFC championships, B-Schott couldn’t defend against an attacking linebacker corp, nor attack a vanilla cover-two defense. This team went from screening its’ way into third down futility under Edwards/Mangini, into the 50-98% Offensive stalling that occurs every game. All three regimes OC’d by Brian Schottenheimer
