New York Jets Waive Kenwin Cummings
The Jets have waived backup linebacker and special teamer Kenwin Cummings.
I liked the job Cummings did in the preseason, but we all know how much preseason is worth. It is one thing to perform against backups. The coaching staff clearly did not see enough. He has only been active for half the games to this point and has not made an impact.
It will be interesting to see whether the Jets try to bring him back to the practice squad and develop him.

I wonder who they cleared the roster spot for...
I would like to see Tanny try and bring Shawne Merriman to NY. He could join up with old buddies LT and Cro, and who knows? Maybe he can regain his form in a brand new uniform.
Merriman is on IR
and the trading deadline passed on Tuesday the nineteenth. Free agents and waived players only from here until after our season ends.

They Should Have Cut Gholston
This guy needs to go away. He is useless I mean 3 years and not even a sniff of a QB sack. He is the biggest bust in Jets history. Johnny Lam Jones and Blair Thomas you are now relieved of that stigma.
Agreed
It’s pretty clear even when the line is depleted the most he can ever do for us is 4 tackles in 6 games.

Gotta figure this was done with somebody else in mind.
Wonder who it is. Adalius maybe? Maybe Cumberland or Vlad starts to make the active roster?
Gotta figure that whoever they snag will be signed and ready to roll for practice on Monday.
Josh Mauga ILB promoted to the 53
Reported by Lisa Zimmerman the Jets promoted Josh Mauga ILB out of Nevada to take Kenwin Cummings spot. The move was done for two reasons IMHO. First Kenwin was not a good special teams player, Mauga has some potential, and Westoff is looking to utilize it. If you are not a starter you better play ST, and play well, ask David Clowney. The second reason relates to the type of player that Mauga and Cummings are . Kenwin, came out of tiny Wingate as a DE, the Jets working with him on the PS in 2008, & 2009, to develop him as an ILB. The value that Cummings gave was that he was a thumper, in a Mangini, rigid 3-4, playing strongside ILB, taking on offensive guards. But he was a two down LB with only one position ( remember he tried to take over for Trusnick after he was traded to Cleveland, Trusnick was a great ST ). Therefore you will see Cleveland and New England have an interest in Cummings right away.
Josh Mauga has been a Linebacker all his life , starting all four years at Nevada, playing both inside and outside LB. In Rex’s defensive system he requires players to be versitile. Josh is excellent in coverage and a strong MLB a better fit for the defense.

Good observations. Maybe the injury to Westerman gave Cummings some more reps and Kenwin just didnt look ready to step up.

Straighten up and fly right.
Linebacker Depth very thin
The depth at linebacker is not very good. Westerman being banged up makes the situation worse. Laury was brought in for special teams, he couldn’t make it as a backup LB in Seattle. Mauga is a rookie undrafted free agent, training camp and six weeks on the PS, it is important that he develops quickly.
The good news is that the Jets are deep at Safety and at CB… Rex feels very comfortable replacing a LB with Eric Smith or Ihedigbo..
