Jon Gruden Primer

Here are some lines you might hear from Jon Gruden in the booth tonight.

Look at Brett Favre. He's 41 years old and still getting the job done.

LaDainian Tomlinson, does that guy look like he's lost a step? You think the Chargers could use a guy like this right now.

Check out Dustin Keller. He's developing into one of the best tight ends in the league. Let me tell you something. I wish I had a guy like this while I was still coaching.

Adrian Peterson is just a great, great player.

David Harris is one of the most underrated middle linebackers in the league. He's one of the best in the NFL.

Brad Smith does a little of everything. When you've got a Wildcat quarterback who can throw, you've got something special.

Jaws, Mark Sanchez has turned into a great, great quarterback, and you know a thing or two about quarterbacks.

If you want to see two elite players at their position, check out this Randy Moss-Darrelle Revis matchup. You just want to get a bag of popcorn, kick up your feet, and enjoy it.

Back when I coached Favre in Green Bay...

For the record, this was good natured tongue in cheek ribbing. I like Gruden. He knows he is going to coach again so he's too afraid to be critical of players, but I think he has a lot of good insights.

Will he refer to the fact that when he coached Favre, that he used to throw 25,000 balls a day? Or if he had a body like Moss, that he would be at the beach every day? I also put the over/under on “this guy/that guy/these guys” at 75.

It was scary, but I could actually hear Gruden’s voice in my head as I read those lines (scary because a Chucky voice in your head is something to be concerned about, next thing you know I’m taking orderws from a dog named Sam to kill people) .

Spot on! Reced!

Pretty funny

Lets not forget the inevitable, “Jaws, what we have tonight are two physical football teams…”

by Crackback on Oct 11, 2010 11:55 AM EDT reply actions

So Boring

Honestly, I hope I’m not the only person who thinks that the MNF announcing team is one of the worst on television. Honestly, of all of the announcing teams in the league, which do you LEAST think deserves to be the one for Madden NFL?
At least Cris Collinsworth gets emotional when a player does something stupid…

by MachlinT on Oct 11, 2010 11:56 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed

The MNF announcers are tough to listen to. Al michaels and Collinsworth are the best to listen to in my opinion.

I also can’t stand Joe Buck. Thank goodness he never does Jets games.

Luckily for me, I will be at the game tonight and won’t have to listen to Gruden and Jaws

You're not alone.

Jon Gruden is easily my least favorite commentator in sports and the chumps he’s with on Mondays make my brain hurt.

I would pay a pretty decent amount of money if it were possible to watch footballs with NO commentary. None. Zero. (On TV anyway. Oddly, the best thing about watching games live was NOT having to hear any of that crap.)

Every time I hear someone say, “You’ve got to make that play…” I want to go ballistic.

I want the man to go back to coaching as soon as humanly possible so I can watch MNF without having to mute constantly to maintain my own sanity.

Not even close. Joe Buck + Troy Aikman team is the worst. Jesus you should have hear them call the Packers-Vikings game yesterday, they were so clueless at so many points, I found myself almost screaming at the TV “aren’t you even watching your own camera feeds!?!” Like when the Packers challenged the late interception of Rodgers. They went on like two minutes about how the interception was clear & the Packers would lose the challenge, until only seconds before the ref made the announcement, it dawned on them, “gee maybe what the Packers were really challenging was not the interception, but the call that the cornerback wasn’t down by contact when he went to the ground, and that he shouldn’t get those twenty yards of runback after the interception?” you know, something that was obvious to every non-comatose viewer in america by the fifth slow-mo replay, if not the first

Maybe it was because it was at the tail end of an afternoon full of inane commentary that I just could not take it. Don’t these guys have earphones for people to tell them they are making themselves look like blind people on national TV?

Though the MNF announcers can get tiresome, they are that way in a “favorite uncle” kinda way. You know them so well that you almost know what they are gonna say 2/3 the time. But the other 1/3 … sometimes they actually say something really interesting. Unlike Buck & Aikman.

I don't know about that

Everyone would be passed out by the end of the first quarter. :-)

by BWJ on Oct 11, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Man at least he's better than Phil Simms

I mean at the very least Chucky’s got a reason for never criticizing anyone.

by Exystence on Oct 11, 2010 12:22 PM EDT reply actions

I think Simms is the only person I’ve ever heard say something like “that was a good hold” after a blatant holding flag

I like chucky

In an Ideal world, I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
