The first body I noticed belonged to Jared Odrick (Pen State). He is very well put together, strong frame from top to bottom. He was getting off the ball quicker than any of his fellow defensive linemen play in and play out. He jumps the snap and gets in to the blocker’s body in a blink. He then used his hands to get off the blocker and his ability to flow to the ball kept on disrupting the offense’s attempt at practicing their running game.
New Era Scouting's David Syvertsen reports on the North teams practise from today, and I picked this section out because Jared Odrick is a player who I think we should be focusing on in the upcoming draft. Right now he is my number one choice for the first round Jets selection.

Odrick
don’t we need a DE more than a DT? particularly w/a 3-4 alignment we already have a very good NT and decent backups
Odrick played DT at Penn, but is projected as either a 4-3 DT or a 3-4 DE, he has the size to play the end in a 3-4 as well as the burst.

Not a problem, just for arguments sake here are his vitals that he came in at this week:
He came in at 301lb’s and just over 6’5
So obviously he has DE size, I think his playing weight will likely be more around the 295 mark

will he be available
if he’s that good, shouldn’t some other team grab him
According to Kiper he will. In his latest mock he has the Jets taking Golden Tate and the Saints taking Odrick with the 31st pick.
On a side note, what exactly does Mel Kiper do? Just review college game tape all year long? Does he have an actual job?
Still think Jets should trade up and get Eric Berry. I know everyone is gonna call me crazy. But he is one of those rare talents.

I would love Eric Berry, but he is a top 5 selection, probably around 3, no way we have the picks and or players to leap that far again this year. Remember our first is not worth as much this year as it was last year.

What's the story on Berry anyway?
Is he a safety or a corner? I hear conflicting things all the time and admittedly I’ve never seen him play.
Well he was a safety a Tennessee but I keep reading scouts view him as being better at CB. So maybe a team like the Chiefs would take him and make him into a CB.

yeah plus we will need as many picks as we can get since we will be limited in FA.

david do you mean that odrick is your top choice of the positions we need (CB, DE, WR, etc) in the entire draft or is he your top reasonable choice? i just want to know if you think hes a better talent than gerald mccoy, joe haden, or someone else projected to be picked very early.
Oh no he is my top reasonable choice, if there was a chance we could get someone like Haden then I would be all for it. I just don’t think that we can afford to move up to be in a position to take someone like that. Haden is a very nice talent though, and would be a great compliment to Revis, I have him as a top 15 pick, and jumping almost 15 picks in the first round will cost a lot.

First off David, he played at Penn State, not Penn…don’t you ever mix that up in front of an alum of either ;)
All kidding aside, I’ve seen every PSU game that Odrick has played in (been to every home game the past 6 years) and I would be pleased if we picked him up. While it doesn’t seem to be an issue on the surface, we struggled to pick up sacks this year which is pretty incredible considering our blitzing and great passing coverage and Odrick is a good solution.
While he hasn’t been the best PSU lineman I’ve seen in my time of closely following the team (Hali [KC] and Maybin [BUF] were definitely better), he’s the best DT. He has the size and speed that would work really well with our defense. I love Kris Jenkins but you just don’t know how someone of that size will bounce back from a serious knee injury. Though even if he does bounce back, Odrick could work at DE.
As for his availability, he should be around. This is a very deep draft with all the underclassmen coming out ahead of the new CBA which could cap rookie salaries. On the previous comment about Eric Berry, I agree he’s one of those top talents but we’d really have to give up a ton to trade up that high. I’d rather grab a 1st and 2nd rounder this year and keep future 1st rounders as well (all of which I’m sure we’d have to give up).
I would avoid trading up this time
The reason for it: we have no third or fourth round draft pick this year, so our ability to draft for depth is limited. Trading up works when we have a specific player definitely in mind and feel we have to get him at all costs, but I think we’ve used it a bit much recently. There are some needs we want to address at and the very least, I don’t feel we should be giving up any more picks unless we give them up for a solid experienced player.
i disagree. if we have a chance to take an extremely high potential player again like last year, we should pull the trigger. trading up has gotten us a lot of great players in the past (sanchez, greene, revis, keller) and i would like that to be our strategy again. i wouldnt mind at all trading up to take a guy like joe haden or gerald mccoy. i would rather leave the draft with one guy like that than five so-so guys.
With no 3rd/4th round selections, it might be a case of just not having enough to move up for anyone, both those guys are top 15 talent, and probably/perhaps top 10, not sure we even have the capability to move up.

Update on Odrick for Day 3
This unit is clearly head and shoulders above the offensive line. Jared Odrick (Penn State) led the way in team drills, as he was nearly unblockable. He was shedding blocks well and I constantly found him in the backfield, re-directing a running back or forcing the QB to move in the pocket.
Certainly not hurting his stock this week
