Initial Draft Outlook

I hope you guys are not feeling too down this morning, I have to admit I woke up with a sense of optimism, usually not experienced after a loss in the AFC Championship game. My first thought was not about what happened, but what is about to happen. Where are the New York Jets going?, well first let's take a quick look at the 2010 NFL draft.

As far as I'm aware right now, we have the following selections in the 2010 NFL draft

New York Jets First Round Selection

New York Jets Second Round Selection

Philadelphia Eagles Fifth Round Selection

New York Jets Sixth Round Selection

New York Jets Seventh Round Selection

Our 3rd and 5th round selections will go to the Browns for Braylon Edwards (bargain), and our 4th round selection will go to the Eagles for Sheppard (although I'm still very mixed up on that trade, it seems like I hear different scenarios every single week), it could of been as high as a 2nd but based on playing time it will be a 4th. If I have this wrong then let me know and will amend it.

We also sent a conditional pick to Detroit for Kevin O'Connell, not sure what that will be, probably the 7th round selection, but I can't see that confirmed anywhere. So as such, will leave it as it is.

So where do you think we should go in the first round? If you could vote in the poll then we could get a clearer indication. Personally I feel we need to go for a player like Jared Odrick from Penn State, Corey Wootton from Northwestern or Arthur Jones from Syracuse. Of course a lot will depend on combine numbers as to where these players will be projected. However Wootton may be a faller because of injury problems.

Over the course of the off-season, we will be previewing a lot of the players that are possibly on the radar, starting with the players at the position you think we should target initially.

Good point Troy, completely forgot about that, with Rhodes end of season performance and Leonhard being as solid as you can get, Smith being a nice replacement it didn’t cross my mind. Especially considering that outside Berry, I really don’t see a guy in their, Taylor Mays obviously but I think we went over this a month or so back, he has a big ‘bust’ potential.

What do you think is gonna happen with Jones? Will they cut him and resign him to avoid his roster bonus? Or will they cut him outright and go with Washington and Greene?

As for the draft we do need an elite pass rusher. All depends on what they do with Rhodes to determine if safety will be a priority. HAVE to get a slot receiver.

by chrebetsthebet on Jan 25, 2010 12:43 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It’s such a hard one to call, before the season I really didn’t think he would be back, up until week 16 I thought he was definitely staying. Now I’m onto not sure. It certainly will be a hard decision, would Jones accept being cut to be re-signed? I’m not so sure he would. I want him back as a security, Greene should be the feature next year with Washington as the 3rd down, but Jones still has a lot to give. I’m not surprised he slowed down at the end of the year, he is getting on, and has taken some serious carries the last few years, 19 games was just too much. I hope he is back, how that happens I’m not sure.

Jordan Shipley is a guy that I really want this team to get, not sure he lasts until our selection in the 2nd round, mid 2nd rounder IMO, if we came out of this draft with Odrick and Shipley in the first two rounds, it would be a cracking draft IMO.

I think Rhodes has been appeased a little, don’t you think he is back with us next Year? he loves New York too much not to.

Keep TJ

We worked TJ too much during the regular season with over 300 carries and he wore down. We didn’t see the real TJ in the playoffs. If we have TJ, Greene and Washington all season that would work by spreading the carries and keeping them fresh for the playoffs. We need a pass rusher, cornerback and a slot receiver if they have no confidence in Clowney, Smith or Wright to fill that void.

+1

Im concerned about Greene and his apparent fragility. Unless his rib was broken yesterday he should have returned. That and the ankle injuries earlier in the season make me wonder whether he can hold up over a season.

Thats why a three back rotation is the way to go if we can afford to keep all three. Too bad we can’t use Washington as a slot receiver……………hmmmmm, or maybe we can.

Golden Tate

If he’s available. We need more playmakers, Tate could be a great slot guy. Mel Kiper has the Jets taking Tate in his latest mock. In the later rounds, need to add another corner and another pass rusher.

by Mackey Sasser on Jan 25, 2010 1:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I was all for taking Tate earlier in the off-season and wouldn’t complain, just think you are more likely to find a good WR in the later rounds than you are a pass rusher. As a ND fan, I have loved watching Golden on a weekly basis though.

If we went DE/WR in the first/second round, would people be happy with this combo?

i Say we take a DE in the first round

adding a solid pass rusher would really boost the defense, so i say take Odrick in round 1 and Shipley in round 2, as he would be a solid slot guy, and having him with Cotchery and Edwards would make for a solid receiving corps

I'm a Syracuse guy..

…because it is my alma mater, however, I STRONGLY believe our first focus should be WR and not a pass rusher. I have no qualms about the football ideology of using the run to set up the pass… in fact I play Madden football that way. Still, our game is incredibly one dimensional and the Colts capitalized on that. If you look at how we got beat in the second half, it wasn’t only Manning’s demigod abilities at QB, The Colts running game was incredibly effective, taking away many 3rd and long opportunities on which the Jets are known for capitalizing. That kept our defense guessing for 30 minutes and they guessed wrong.

A Jets passing attack makes us a more complete team. Cotchery is our workhorse. Edwards is an excellent deep threat who will only get better with more reps with Sanchez. I think we need to pick up an outstanding slot receiver to pick up the underneath routes and overcome blitzes, like a Wes Welker or even an Austin Collie. Between that WR and Keller, Sanchez will have two options for the short passes he’s already very comfortable with, Cotchery working the middle routes and Edwards as the deep threat, it opens up our playbook. Remember, we picked up Favre to open the playbook and our running game in ways Pennington couldn’t, and we wound up taking a step backwards playcalling-wise in our ground-and-pound/safe passing scheme. A threat in the passing game will lead to staggering numbers for Shonn Greene and Leon Washington.

by TeamJets on Jan 25, 2010 1:13 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It is usually

a mistake to spend first round picks on WRs. Not only do many high 1st round picks on WRs end up as busts, but WRs of all quality may be found through out the draft. It is more of a system position than a pure skill one. The offense will improve by Sanchez’ maturation and the hopeful return of Washington. I think a pash rush or depth in the secondary (either CB or S) would be more valuable.

by Buzzy on Jan 25, 2010 1:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

small sample

and #s again depend on system. Look historically and you will see what I mean. As for system-telly me how well Harvin would do if he played on the Vikings in 08 instead of 09 (hint-look at Rice’s career jump).

by Buzzy on Jan 25, 2010 1:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm

the Jets already have Cottchery, Edwards, a pass catching TE (Keller) and if Washington can return, a pass catching RB. The have absolutely no one that can generate a rush at all with just 4 guys (occasionaly Pace can, but he is average at best). It just seems a bigger need and a lesser risk. If Edwards goes, then perhaps…

Washington in the slot

If we are able to keep all three backs do you think Washington is durable enough to be our slot receiver? That way we would not have to draft a slot receiver and can use the pick for another need.

by NYC KID on Jan 25, 2010 2:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think Leon will be expensive.

A lot of teams are going to be shy about pulling the trigger on a guy with his style coming off of a broken leg like he has. And most teams won’t have the patience for him to return to form. We are in a unique position (assuming TJ returns) that we have 2 very good backs and can win plenty of games without him. We can wait for Leon to get back to form, if he can. If he can’t we can get along without him.

by Crackback on Jan 25, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Gotta feel proud....

About how far they went this season. Would’ve been great to get to the big stage, but losing to Indy in their dome is nothing to be embarrassed about. Us older guys know those seasons, and this one was a real success.

Important to take lessons learned approach from the post-season, what worked and what didn’t and to improve from there. With the draft aproaching, Green needs to focus on what was glaring in yesterday’s game. Another corner and/or safety, a running back to complement Shonne Greene and a slot receiver to complement the development of Sanchez. Of course, all of this assumes availability. Some youth on the D-line would be great also.

Regarding Lito, one thing that Rex tells you is why you’re benched. Then it’s up to you to either improve or find more suitable surroundings. A $10 million roster bonus for him should be out of the question, cap or no cap. If no one is available and he comes down to earth, then it can be re-visited.

But again, great season!

That is too small he wouldn’t be able to take the pounding going across the middle all the time. That is why he is really just a ST player for LSU, he may be fast but not so fast that he won’t get clobbered.

He caught 3 balls for 36 yards this year, not sure he is the answer. I think he is a perennial ST player, and if he does hit the base it’s going to be as a RB more than a WR.

I think we need a pass rushing OLB since in a 3-4 D thats where the pass rush comes from. That should be our 1st priority. Than Corner & or Saftey

Wow, not only is it a stupid rule, but its even worse now that they’ve changed around the rules of the draft.

The Jets should pick based on where they finished the regular season, not how they did during the playoffs. Theres no reason that the Pats who won the East should have a better pick then the Jets.

think you can almost always pick up quality receivers throughout the draft. Concentrate on D in the first couple rounds.

by horace clark on Jan 25, 2010 3:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

DE can come much easier from FA...

We need to sign either Peppers or Seymour, and then draft either Golden Tate or trade up for Dez Bryant in the draft. Only player I’d look to drop and take over a WR is Taylor Mays.

Only alternative I see to that is if we work out a trade for Marshall or Boldin (although I really dont like Boldin, hes not the player he was two years ago), still sign a DL if we could afford Seymour great (I think Peppers would then be out of our price range) and then go after the best player for depth at CB, DL, S, or WR.

by Judgegavel on Jan 25, 2010 3:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Times doen't know what they are talking about (fully) besides

they definitely loose Kellen Clemens, and possibly Smith and Washington, so they do have some room, they are just limited, the one and only big need is a pass rush DE that fits the 3/4, Clemens is gone but will sign somewhere so we have our one.

by Judgegavel on Jan 25, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

that someone might go-but they will not be able to to sign several FAs. Also if Washington goes or is not the same, then that is a hole that needs filling, as might be Jones, etc. Plus, we will need a backup QB, etc.

Greene would have never been given the carries and would have never shown what he could do.

by Judgegavel on Jan 25, 2010 4:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

true.

On the other hand Leon is pretty good as a straight up RB, awsome catching out of the backfield, and a great return guy. He is a guy that defenses have to gameplan for. If he comes back full strength next year, then getting Greene the time would make the injury a long-term blessing in disguise.

by Judgegavel on Jan 25, 2010 4:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I still think Greene gets his carries, we just have an option on 3rd down. Would of been very valuable to Sanchez, instead of forcing these throws down field, he dumps it off to Leon who makes it all happen. Greene might of not has as many carries, but I still think he would of had ample opportunity to show his ability.

We also missed Leon a ton on kick and especially punt returns

Absolutely, but nobody works harder than that guy, when the season comes around, he will be ready to go. If we can keep him more to the 200 carries type mark, instead of the 340 carries or however many he got this year, I think we can get some value from him. and there are two great options in Peppers and Seymour available.

I think Ainge is ready to step in as back-up QB, so we will only be looking for a third stringer.

Plenty of WR options available through trades this year.

I still have a few issues with what the times is saying, what happens to players that are cut, say Jones, or Sheppard, what about the lesser players under 1 year contracts (Woodhead, etc.). The Jets have to fill their roster, so I don’t think they are explaining it right.

Dumervil has a good chance to land in Miami, Nolan now there, a native of Miami.

Spears is a restricted free agent in 2010, he has been a bit of a disappointment since being a first round draft pick, maybe Rex could get something out of him, 20 odd tackles this year, nothing special, but still only 26, so might be an option.

Right now though, I definitely have my eyes on Jared Odrick and Jordan Shipley as our first two selections. Fulfils two of our needs.

I don't think that Dumervil would be a good fit

He’s completely a pure pass rusher and totally a non-factor in run defense, and versatility is key in Rex Ryan’s defense.

I agree hes a short term gap, problem we have no depth and to aging starters...

I say get Seymour and also take a shot with a few picks, but DL’s can be found in late round much better than DB’s or WR’s.

by Judgegavel on Jan 25, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree with that, I think WR are much more likely to be found in the later rounds than a every down defensive lineman. I’m just against paying the price that Seymour will likely want for a short term fix, while we still have serviceable defensive ends we should look to bring in the next generation.

Maybe a 4/3, but not a 3/4 end, plus this draft is suppose to be particularly deep...

at DL and thin at WR. The better draft will be getting the WR in the first (if its one of the top) or even a CB or S and then getting the developmental DL in the second.

by Judgegavel on Jan 25, 2010 5:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree-didn't

we just get torched by a 6th round pick from Div. III at WR? Every year there are good WRs found in the later rounds it seems.

by Buzzy on Jan 25, 2010 5:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

and yet you look

at a guy like Garcon and you see big, strong, fast with good hand and runs good routes. It is a system position, that is why you see so many guys at that position that pan out later in the draft. And you also see the wasted 1st rounders on WR, as in Detroit’s idiocy with their obsession with WRs.

by Buzzy on Jan 25, 2010 5:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You can also say that about a ton of other WR's that haven't panned out

Garcon would be Wallace Wright if it wasn’t for Manning

by Judgegavel on Jan 25, 2010 5:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I always wonder with someone like him, how good would he be with an average QB, or at least a good QB, not necessarily a superstar like Peyton. I still think he is a serviceable guy.

He works hard

has good physical tools and good hands and route-running skills. Of course he would not be great without Manning-but that is my point. It is hard to find a WR who transforms QBs, it is much more likely to find QBs that transform WRs. That is why I don’t like wasting high draft picks on them…

by Buzzy on Jan 25, 2010 5:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Seymour still has a few years left, and is perfect for the 3/4...

although he’s not the pass rush end they really need, he would be the perfect fit for the Jets overall. Honestly he’s a better end than Douglas or even Ellis at this point and can spell Jenkins at DT too.

Peppers is the pas rusher they need, but may not work in the 3/4, and will take a ton of money.

by Judgegavel on Jan 25, 2010 4:29 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

it is funny

Peppers seems built for a 4-3 but wants to play in a 3-4 above all else…

by Buzzy on Jan 25, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t really understand that either, he is much more suited to the 4-3, switching at this point could be a real issue with him.

I could see Peppers working in a 3-4, but as an end, not a linebacker.

I think Casserly said, on CBS yesterday, that Raiders would franchise Seymour. So take him off the list.

IDK they also have ...

Morrison, and Howard as UFA, who are just as valuable and younger to hold on to.

Just out of interest for the people saying CB in the first round, who do you have in mind? as far as I can see there is one CB that is ‘elite’ and then there is a massive drop off in talent to the 2nd round minimum. Got Joe Hadan in the first, and then probably Warren and Arenas possible 2nd round guys, then we fall further for Lindley and Robinson (possible he could vault his stock at the combine).

Just wondering who you had in mind?

Robinson , I think should be a late first rounder and is the #2 CB...

although I dont like him there, I’d prefer Golden Tate or Taylor Mays. If Sapp falls I take him hes the perfect fir otherwise DE can wait till round 2.

I'd go after Adaliu Thomas

to address our pass rush issues. I’d definitely pick him up if Pat release him, or trade a low pick for him

not a lockdown guy like revis, but clearly dwight lowrey is not cutting it. just someone to take away their #2 reciever cough pierre garcon cough

Hmm Scouts inc. has him rated 25 overall...

Kiper has him going 30 in his first Mock, McShay has him in the late first round too.

Patrick Robinson really?? umm interesting. I saw him a few times and wasn’t impressed enough to place him in the first, obviously those guys know far more than I do. Will see how he performs the rest of the week at the Senior Bowl and at the combine. Like I said, I thought he was between the 10-15 pick in round 2, but if they have him very low first then maybe he is worth considering.

To be fair, Pierre Garçon is a f***ing beast

I didn’t realize he was as big of a guy as he was until Sunday. Holy friggin crap and Lowery’s like probably under 200 lbs

Garcon is definitely a big dude, fast as well, he will be a great player with Peyton throwing to him. Still think Collie is the better receiver though, how crisp is his route running. Nearly pin point every single time.

And Garçon is only a step below him in that skill

…and Wayne is maybe the best route-runner in the league. And that all pretty much plays right to Peyton’s strengths. It’s no wonder their passing game is so amazing.

by Exystence on Jan 26, 2010 10:23 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not at all, Peyton makes them look a step above where they are, but they still have to do a lot of things right. Nice scouting job by the Colts to get those two guys. If we are looking at a wide receiver late in the draft, Mike T should give them a call.

Reggie Wayne was shut down by Revis and Clark was by Rhodes, but nobody was able to cover Garcon OR Collie, exactly why we need a second corner

Anybody think

we should get Damian Williams? Good receiver and he used to be Mark Sanchez’s teammate.

by Bob_The_Friendly_Baker on Jan 25, 2010 6:11 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Did think about that Bob, but then I just thought, what does he have that we don’t already have with Cotchery and Braylon, where as someone like Tate or Shipley will add as a slot, not sure Williams has the short area quickness to be effective there. Not seen a ton of him yet though.

Secondary or WR

anything else sits on the back burner, including the pass rush. There’s some teeth in the pass rush, neglecting the secondary another year will crush Jets defense.

by Bro Namath on Jan 25, 2010 6:54 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

DE

Getting a DE would help the secondary. Getting a natural pass rusher would allow Rex to get pressure on the QB without sending people up to blitz. That way you can keep people back in coverage.

by PowerBar on Jan 25, 2010 7:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That really was where we struggled at times, we had to send a lot of players to get pressure, against average/decent QB’s it works, but against the absolute elite like Peyton, not being able to get pressure was the downfall.

This will be tough

for tanny ,but hes got a couple a months to figure out how to fill our 3 most glaring holes.

If its possible to sign peppers, seymour, or dumerville i say we get 1 of them and use our draft picks to fill the wide reciever and cornerback problem. I also can see us trading down to aquire more picks if Tanny sees who he wants.

But we also need to release people to get the amount of money to sign seymour. I say we let clemens, jones, lito, and drew coleman go (if we can).

Use the money to get 1st choice dumerville, then peppers and then seymour.

Draft Golden Tate and A cornerback with our 1st 2 picks

5th round- Punter
6th round- QB
7th round-OLine

There are so many punters available post draft, I’m not sure I would go with a 5th on that position. I sometimes forget about all the players that don’t get selected and fall through the net, we have to remember Bart Scott was one of these guys. There is talent to be had after the draft, and I have faith that Rex can find a few good ones.

Cornerback

I think that we need to find a corner in the draft, a major reason as to why we lost was because, Coleman couldn’t keep up with the speed of Garcon. With that said I think that this season showed a great step forward for years to come.

NJ.com sites a source within the Jets that says the team will release Shepperd and trade Rhodes. So the secondary might be a top priority in the offseason. He also said they will tender Edwards but would listen to all offers for him. Looks like they are trying to pile up draft picks.

by chrebetsthebet on Jan 26, 2010 5:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Probably not a bad idea considering the depth in this draft. I know Rex said that he had a conversation with Rhodes and what was talked about will remain between those two. Probably a we are going to look at the opportunities but not against keeping you. I have a feeling that our D will take a step back next year to be honest, but It depends on who we target obviously. I really thought Rhodes would stay after late season performances, and Lito would be released and then re-signed, but then maybe being dropped in the AFC Championship game was the icing on the cake.

I still think that Sheppard is a good corner but what are you gna do.

Any hybrid DE/OLB players out there (for drafting)?

It might be good to have a guy who can act as a DE on passing downs and OLB on run defense. That would improve our performance in both areas. There are times when we have gotten gashed by the run (if the Colts gave Addai more carries, Benson, Ricky Williams).
As for the other needs, both a third WR (Clowney is a clown, and I like Woodhead but I’m not sure he’s the right guy) and a CB opposite Revis would be important (Arenas in the second?), but on the last one I think even getting the best corner available in the draft is no guarantee of performance.

by Rabbit T on Jan 26, 2010 6:38 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I really can’t think of too many hybrid’s in the draft this year to be perfectly honest, Jerry Hughes is 6-3 and around 260, so could probably play both DE/OLB in the NFL, but still a little undersized for a 3-4 DE. Kindle/Davis both of whom would be good as OLB in the 3-4 are undersized to play DE in this system. Really can not see too many.

Personally speaking I would rather Robinson and Warren ahead of Arenas.

#1 pass defense

means DBs are not a priority (obviously that changes if we lose 2 starters in the offseason). the secondary was good all year, except against manning. i know its the last game so its on our minds, but they should focus on their pass rush which didn’t really do too much without blitzers. a natural pass rusher would make this defense very very difficult to contend with.

The second game against the patriots Brady-Welker DESTROYED us, and i do recall us playing them twice a year.
