questions about the 46 defense
Hey Jets fans I was wondering if you guys would share some of your knowledge with me. I am a Colts fan, but also a fan of great defenses. I have always been a fan of the 46 defense dating back to those awesome Bears defenses in the mid 80's It's a defense that truly draws a line in the sand and says "none shall pass" I love that stuff.
I was curious as to how this defense compare to the 46 that Buddy ran with the Bears?
Do they over load the one side of the line like the Bears did?
On the Jets web site they have the defense listed as a 34, is it a modified 34 or is it a true 46?
How do these players compare too the Bears defense back in the 80's?
I have been truly impressed with Rex has brought this team along. I'm also impressed with the fact that the Ryan's have been apart of every great NFL defense in the modern age.
I do appreciate you taking the time to share you knowledge
I am hoping for a Colts win, but expect a great game.
Thanks again for your time.

The Bears 46 D
consisted of 4-3 personal arranged with the strongside linebacker lined up to the right (from the defense’s prospective) to the weakside linebacker. The MLB shifts a bit to the right and the SS occupies the vacant strongside linebackers spot. Before the season, it appeared that the Jets only had one real starting DT (Pouha really has preformed better than anyone could have expected-even taking into account his improvement last year) and 4 worthy linebackers, which was a result of Jets running a 3-4 unit under Mangini.
However, unlike what Mangini did in his first year, Ryan didn’t try to fit a peg into a square hole and used a modified version of the 46 defense with 3 linesman and 4 linebackers with one line backer usually lining up on the line in base formation. The strong safety still lines up on the LB level on the strong side. However, keep in my that the basic idea of the 46 D is to confuse the offense with pre-snap movement and various blitzes from different directions, so while the Jets lineup similarly to the Bears D, it’s hard to compare the two of them.
The causative relationship is that talent (plus luck) leads to wins. And that talent (plus service time) leads to payrolls.
I would add
The Jets defense focuses more on the secondary (not giving the QB a good throw to make), while the Bears defense focused more on the pass rush, pressuring the QB into bad throws. You could call them respectively pick-happy and sack-happy.
Did Rex bring any of his own players for his defense?
thnx man very informative. I appreciate you taking time to explain some the differences. I did a little web exploring, but never found any info about RR’s version of the 46 compared to BR’s version.
Defense is more important than breathing.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
