What If?
I'd like to open the floor to you guys. The Jets look different than they did a year ago at head coach and quarterback, arguably the two most important spots on any football team. How do you think things would have been different had Eric Mangini and Brett Favre returned for the 2009 season? Would the Jets still be playing for the AFC title?

No doubt in my mind that we would not even be in the post season, nobody wanted to play for Eric, and Favre didn’t want to be here. Arguably we have gotten here on the back of players wanting to play for their coach, and not having to submit to the demands of a prima donna QB. We don’t get Bart Scott or Jim Leonhard if Rex isn’t here, and they have both been vital for this D.

I sure ate my words.
You guys deserved that game. We’ve made it a habit of choking in the play-offs. Congrats to your team and its fans for a great win in our house. Lets hope they can do it at least one more time. I will be pulling for your squad this weekend. Good luck!
The players that Rex brought
The Jets wouldnt have Scott or Leonhard either, 2 huge pieces to this team. Figure this is Favres last year for real this time, and in a weak QB pool this year in the draft the Jets wouldnt have anybody. Rex and Sanchez is much better than Mangini and Favre. Mangini lost that locker room pretty fast. I think another thing is Rex is actually willing to fire his team up in the press conference and get the fans into it. After every game it seems hes talking about how much the fans were into the game or how they didnt produce for the fans. And hes willing to stand up for his players in the press conference with the whole Sanchez is the QB and calling out the voters who didnt vote for Revis. Mangini wouldnt do any of that
Totally agree about Scott and Leonhard… That is what I was going to say.
Plus Rex has a huge role in where we are from bringing the guys to Cortland, to deciding to start the rookie QB, to the way he prepares the team each week and installed our swagger.
But we wouldnt be here without Mangini too… he gave us Sanchez and Braylon for next to nothing this year which opens up our running game and helps reduce the double coverage on Cotchery. Frankly, we had good drafts under Mangini too so he added a lot of really high caliber players to this team (him and tannebaum) – virtually no busts (except Gholston) compared to what we had under other GMs and Coaches.
Next year will be even more insane when players who’ve heard how great the Jets lockerroom is and see how successful this team can be WHILE HAVING FUN will want to come play here – hopefully we can add some depth to our roster and continue to build on what has already been a year beyond my wildest dreams (given most people thought we’d be 4-12 with a rookie QB). You never know which probowl players might be too expensive for their current teams but are willing to take a cut to come have some fun with Rex and the J-E-T-S!
That is how the Pats added so many big names over the past decade.

I actually think
we would have won more games in the regular season with a more mature qb, but lost earlier in the playoffs because the defense would be a lot weaker w/o rex.
Mangini's skill wasn't his problem...
It’s his personality and presence. He’s not a bad schemer and he’s not a bad drafter. Rex Ryan, however, brought exactly what the Jets have needed for decades to the team.
And, I don’t care how good Favre is. Favre is all about Favre which is the LAST thing I want in a QB (or any player for that matter, but especially a QB). Something I really like about the way the Jets are running now is that they don’t mind bragging or talking big about the team but individually they seem fairly humble.
I was really impressed that no one seemed to bite during the Chargers game when San Diego was all over the place being chippy and with some of the uncalled late hits (like the crap hit on Greene after the TD). They kept their cool. That tells me A LOT about this team, especially with the downright lack of media respect they’ve received. They’re proving it ON the field and letting that do the talking. That’s huge and that’s why they’re playing like they’re playing.

w/ Eric at the helm
The Jets would be fighting for 3rd place in the division.

I think Favre wouldve hurt us more than Mangini
Favre wouldve taken away our strength of running the ball at vital times, and lets not forget he actually threw more picks last year than Sanchez did this year and against an easier schedule. The Jets had a gift schedule last year, that they didnt take advantage of. Mangini, in my opinion, would make a better GM than HC. With that said, I think Mangini couldve eventually gotten us to this point, just probably not this year.
I disagree
I hate Favre, but if everything was the same, and we just had Favre instead of Sanchez, we’d probably have won 10 to 12 games. He’s just a better quarterback than Sanchez, and that can’t hurt. We almost certainly would have beaten the Bills in that game where Sanchez threw five picks, we would have had a better chance at beating the Saint’s, we would have won one of the Dolphins games, Sanchez cost us a few games. You can say Favre threw more picks last year than Sanchez this year (22 to 20), but he also threw the ball ~150 more times last season than Sanchez did this year (522 to 364), so it’s not a fair comparison. Also, 9 of those picks came after supposed arm injury in week 12.
I don’t know if we would have won the playoff games, but I think we would have had a better record with Favre over Sanchez. Mangini is a whole other story.
"Three home teams advance, and the fuckin' Jets" - Rex Ryan
Who wouldnt want Favre over Sanchez at this point?
I know Rex didnt want him. He wouldve compromised what we do, which is run the football, and possibly divide the locker room. I think Favre was far more unpopular than Mangini was in the Jets locker room. Whether you love or hate Mangini, we all know he wanted the Jets to win. Favre? I dont think he cared one way or the other. He just wanted to use us to get to Minnesota.

With Favre instead of Sanchez
I don’t see much of a change
With Mangini instead of Ryan
We go 2-14, no one liked him, and it seems like no one does now either.
"We're only going to score 17 points?"
2-14? Really?
Considering Mangini won 4 games with a team with half the talent he wouldve had this year(even without the Bal guys) I cant see a 2 win season. Nobody liked him? Im sure you were on the Mangenius band wagon in year one when he made the playoffs.
the bandwagon
It was more of a by comparison thing I think, they beat the Patriots that year and made the playoffs and things were good so we jumped on it but there wasn’t much excitement other than that. 2 wins? no I dont think theyd have more than 4 though.
I was one of the guys that wanted Mangini gone after last year
I think had he stayed, I would say the Jets wouldve had a 6 or 7 win season. I do think Mangini deserves a lot of credit for helping to put this team together.

Building for the future
The Vikings are going for it all this Sunday against for the Saints. I think N.O. wins and the Vikes end the season where they are now. They haven’t built a team for the future and they crumble in two years.
The Jets have built an infrastructure both player an coaching wise to last in the longer-term as well. In pre-season we were building for the future. Hopefully Green goes to Miami but even if not no one can say the season didn’t more than exceed expectations (except Rex, perhaps).
To compare Favre to Sanchez in terms of experience has no relevancy, Anyone want to watch a tape of the last few games of last season? The team is playing as a unit, and it isn’t bigger than any one player.
Sanchez may have been eating a hot dog on the sidelines, but at least he wasn’t taped singing Pants on the Ground!
If healthy...
If healthy Brett Favre would have gotten us a respectable regular season record, guestimating 11-5. The only true reason we didn’t go 12-4 or 13-3 this year was QB play was lacking. Favre would have finished games where a rookie wasn’t able to. Now the team itself would have been weaker overall because the defense would not be what it is today – thats all Rex’s credit. The best possible team would have been Favre with Rex coaching!
Mangini +Sanchez = 4-12
Mangini +Favre = 11-5, play-off loss in 2nd round
Ryan +Sanchez = Reality
Ryan + Favre = 13-3, Superbowl favorites.
80s were the Dolphins, 90s Bills, 00 Patriots, Its the Jets decade now!
IF Favre's heart was in it we could have gotten farther.
But I don’t think his heart was ever in NY. Just a stepping stone to get him from Green Bay to where he wanted to go.
Don’t get me wrong, I have no resentment towards the man and will never forget the year Brett Favre played for my NY Jets.
