Ask a Colts fan... one more time

Hiya Jets fans. First off, let me state the obvious: Your team deserves to be in these playoffs. Anyone saying otherwise is an idiot, and should be utterly dismissed. Second, I don't buy this notion that the Jets were "allowed" into the playoffs. Teams like the Steelers had numerous opportunities to get in, such as their Thursday night game against the Browns (which they lost) or their last second collapse against the Raiders. The Jets won the games they were supposed to win and got it. Teams like the Steelers didn't. It's that simple.

This fan post is so you Jets fans can ask Stampede Blue writers and reads questions about the Colts. Folks like me, shake n bake, and others will do our best to answer your queries. We look forward to Sunday's game and to your questions about it.

Thanks

For the kind words, i have so many work freinds and others who are STILL saying otherwise. Pittsburgh and Houston lost the games that could’ve gotten them in the playoffs, we didn’t.

I just have 2 questions for you:
1. How much faith do you have in Matt Stover? This postseason perhaps the biggest question mark for teams are the kickers(Kaeding, Graham etc), how well do you think Stover will be able to kick it?
2. How well is your secondary playing? I ask this because i simply do not think the Jets will be able to ground and pound it for the whole game. I can see them falling behind by a touchdown or two and simply being forced to throw the ball. I see that Sanchez has progressed immensely over the last couple of weeks and i think the recievers have also came together as a whole to support Sanchez more. That being said, how well do your cornerbacks, safeties play the ball and force turnovers and also what kind of matchups should we be looking for for Braylon and Jerricho, as well as Keller.

Thanks alot for your time!

by ThomasU on Jan 19, 2010 9:25 AM EST reply actions

Answer

1) Stover is a solid kicker with a long history of making big FGs. If the kick is over 45 yards, the Colts still have Adam Vinatieri. Kicking situation is fine. If Stover or Vinatieri pull a Kaeding, it is an anomaly. Kaeding had a rep for missing big kicks prior to Sunday’s game.
2) Very well. The Colts have, arguably, the best secondary in football. Jerraud Powers was probably the best rookie corner this year, and Kelvin Hayden is a stud. Antoine Bethea is one of the best free safeties in football, and Melvin Bullitt has made many of us wonder if Bob Sanders was worth the big contract he got.

This didn’t really seem to be an issue in week 16 because Keller really wasn’t playing that well, but he has really broken out the last couple of games and is playing like he was his rookie season, how do Indy cover tight ends, and do you think that his size and speed down the middle will cause you the most problems receiving wise?

Also cheers for the words, a lot of people still are harping on about us not belonging in the play-offs, but I think two wins against two division champions are starting to make them question themselves.

Answer

Dustin Keller is a stud and we in Indy know him very well (Purdue football). Colts deploy a Tampa-2 scheme. So, whatever zone Keller runs into, that defender will be on him. Likely, on seem routes, it will be Gary Brackett, and he is a very god coverage linebacker.

what is your most immediate concern about the defense the colts are facing. what do you think the colts will do to combat revis-island?

secondly, how confident are you on the outcome of this game?

third, what do you think the score will be?

by ControlTheMind on Jan 19, 2010 11:24 AM EST reply actions

1. Great pass D. A great run D doesn’t have much effect on the Colts, since their running game has really just been about keeping play action effective and not letting teams get cute and run the dime on them all the time.

2. As confident as I’ll allow myself to be for a playoff game. The Jets are a good team, but I think the Colts are clearly better. Victory is in no way guaranteed, but I think the Colts chances are very good.

3. 24-16 Colts (yes I just combined the spread and over/under)

bc your "best D"

allowed more points in the 2.5 quarters to half of the Colts starters than they did on average all season.

b/c your “best D” allowed 2 rushing TDs to a Colts team which finished last in the league in rushing.

b/c your “Best D” allowed peyton to throw for 50 more yards in 2.5 quarters than your “best D” gave up per game.

Another answer

Revis Island doesn’t concern me simply because Reggie Wayne has been taken out of games before, and Peyton still can find Dallas Clark, Pierre Garcon or Austin Collie to pick up the slack. All are extremely competent players, excellent route-runners and quite adept at finding gaps in coverages.

I am brimming with confidence, as I have been all season long. You have to understand this team was only a Bill Polian “rest is necessary” decision from going undefeated, so why shouldn’t I be confident? I do not expect it to be a blowout, but I expect the Colts to win.

I think the Colts win this game 27-17. And 17 points is giving the Sanchize a lot of credit.

I Bleed Blue! Go Colts!

by Mr. Indianapolis Colts on Jan 19, 2010 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

You had 2 double-digit wins against playoff teams all year.

One was against Arizona when they were struggling in week 3.
The other was Baltimore last week who did everything they could to gift-wrap that game for you.

You expect to put up 27 against a better defense when you could only muster 20 against a lesser defense with 4 turnovers and help from the refs.

The only thing youre brimming with is arrogance. And the football gods will strike you down for spitting in the face of history.

by Crackback on Jan 19, 2010 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, I expect the Colts to put up at least 27 points...

And I don’t know where you get off calling the Ravens a lesser defense…Ok, the Jets gave up an amazing 1.5 fewer points per game and 48 fewer passing yards per game than the Ravens. The Ravens had a better Rush D, forced more fumbles, had more INTs (overall more TOs), and you both managed 32 sacks.

I consider the 1.5 ppg stat a wash, which leaves the only category you trump the Ravens is solely because of Revis. Big deal. We don’t need to throw it to Wayne to win the game.

This is why I liken the Ravens and Jets defenses to each other.

I Bleed Blue! Go Colts!

by Mr. Indianapolis Colts on Jan 19, 2010 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

Stat man

The point difference between the two teams jumps up when you figure in the fact our O gave up 7 touchdowns. Take those away and our D avg 11.7PPG to the Ravens 16.3 for a difference of 4.6. Forcing a fumble means nothing if you don’t recover it and we did that better as well., thats why they have 1 more TO than us, (as you would say a wash).

And we didn’t call them a lesser D, the stats do!

In the words of The Sphynx from the movie MYSTERY MEN, “We are number ! All others are number two or lower!”

by amrson69 on Jan 23, 2010 1:53 AM EST up reply actions

points allowed isn't just a function of defense

The Ravens offense was significantly better meaning their D got better field position to defend. The Colts will likely be facing shorter fields against the Jets than they did against the Ravens.

Thats poopy talk.

The ravens have a finesse running attack and an injured QB. Our backs won’t dance around in the hole waiting for someone to come in from the side for a tackle. We get north and south and get down hill in a hurry. And Greene, who will likely get the bulk of the carries, is a load.

Your defensive front will wilt, just like they all do. Cant wait til Monday to see how cocky you guys are then. Lets see if Peyton can go 2 weeks in a row squeezing the ball into teeny windows with blitzers coming from all angles.

20-14 Jets.

Thomas Jones runs this league

by FlyNYJ on Jan 21, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

I'm most concerned with Calvin Pace...

The offensive line has been the only weak link for the Colts this year. Manning is great at getting rid of the ball quickly, but sustaining pressure on him is really the only chance you have against the Colts.

In the first matchup, I honestly was not that impressed with Revis. I don’t know if he was having an off day or what, but it looked like Reggie shook him on several routes. Hard to judge with Manning missing him a couple times and only playing a half, but I think Reggie will be just fine. As others have said, Clark, Collie, and Garcon are always viable options as well.

I’m predicting Colts 24 Jets 10. The Colts offense will be fine, but I think a very under-rated Colts D will be the story of this game. The Jets aren’t exactly an offense powerhouse and the Colts D has been at top 10 (sometimes top 5) unit this season. I think the Colts will get up 7-10 at the half and manage the game from there.

by invisibulman on Jan 19, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

Throw to someone else

1. In short if a receiver isn’t open, you’ll see Manning throw to someone who is. Most Manning INTs this season have been either due to disguised coverage (usually a safety coming over) or a tipped ball. Corners pwning receivers has not really been a problem.

2. Very

3. Colts win 17-7. Colts D has made a quantum leap, and the offense is adequate.

I said its impossible to assess out WR/TE group bc of our subpar QB play.

If Sanchez was QBing your team this year, would your guys still have such gaudy stats? Your group is just as difficult to assess bc of the regular season greatness of your QB.

Anyone with a brain (and certainly any Jet fan) knows that the Jet group’s numbers would increase dramatically if they played on your team.

In fact, if we swapped QBs for the season and met at season’s end, our team would completely demolish your team. Thats an undeniable fact. That proves how much better we are than you over-all, and how great your QB is. It also shows how propped up by him you are.

So yes, its arguable. And yes, our group is arguably better.

…can always avoid Revis (though I don’t think we will.) Pace is the one player with potential to screw up the offense. I suspect Addai will be kept in to block quite frequently to prevent this. Fortunately, Addai is an elite blocker at the RB position. He won’t stop Pace by himself, but should do enough to help plug up the o-line.

1. Did Colts Fans start chanting J-e-t-s when they realized they didnt have to get by a Chargers team that had knocked em out the past two seasons?

2. What Jets player on Offense and what Jet on Defense do you feel could give the Colts the most problems on Sunday?

3. Do Colts fans in Indy really care about the team’s history while it was in Baltimore and if they do, how do they look at the Super Bowl 3 Upset.

4. Outside of the obvious culprits on the Colts O and D, what player should I watch out for as a Jets fan that could cause some serious problems.

BTW, I always pull for the Colts when they dont play the Jets, you guys always stick it to the Pats and what Jets fan doesnt enjoy that. Best of Luck this weekend

Good Questions

1. Yes. Watching the Chargers get run by a team that was made the playoffs due to two (perceived) better teams laying down on them was a classic. The Chargers fans are a special kind of smug that gets you sent to the back of the line at any respectable NY Deli. They thought that because they were the San Diego Chargers and your team was the inferior Jets from the wrong coast, that all they had to do is show up, take three snaps and the game would be over 41-0.

2. We usually leave short passes over the middle defended poorly, so I would expect your slot receiver to have a better than average day.

3. We laugh our asses off about the Mayflower incident. Baltimore was trying to use Eminent Domain to seize the team and the owners did what any business owner would do. GTFO. As far as SB III, that was the Baltimore Colts. The clock started for most of us when the Colts moved to Indy.

4d. Colts sleepers to watch on defense: Bethea (S), Foster (DT), Brock (DT), Bullit (S)
4o. Colts sleepers who will have big games against the Jets: Garçon (WR), Collie (WR). It looks like Mike Hart (RB) will get quite a few snaps. Oh, and remember the player with the highest QB rating on our team is RB Joe Addai, not Peyton Manning.

1. it was a mixed blessing to not see the chargers. 1 i wanted the colts to beat them. 2 i didnt have to hear about prev playoff games.

2. jones/ greene – sometimes although not lately the colts LBers can have suspect tackling. however due to great team speed i dont see any big runs like greene’s on sunday. i think the colts have only gave one up to frank gore, but i could see these two being able to pick up key 3rd downs

3. no, nobody cares about it, i wish we would play them less so everyone stops talking about it

4. – O- Austin Collie WR has really been doing great. while manning was on the field last time i believe he had 94 yards. – D- Clint Session WLB – i believe he leads the team with tackles. he is very fast and able to plug up a hole. i can see him giving Jets RBs fits

1. I didn’t chant that but I was rooting for you guys the entire time. I could stomach you guys going to the SB but I couldn’t stomach the Chargers or the Pats going in our stead. I have always been rooting for you guys, the Phins, anyone to rise up and take the division from the Pats.

2. I have a ton of respect for Keller. My cousin and I watched him play at Purdue and we were both just talking about how he has a knack for the ball and for getting the ball into the endzone. We are going to load up against the run so I am afraid of Keller getting big chuncks down the seams.

3. I know and respect our history but I don’t really think much on it.

4. At the begining of the game I think Session is going to be a player to watch as he is one of our main run stopping cogs along with Miur. These guys aren’t widely known but play their roles in the defense very well. IF we get a 7-10 point lead a not well known player to look for is Eric Foster. He is only a 6-2 265 DT but he is excelent at getting penetration and pressuring the QB. He obviously isn’t an elite run stopper but he is one of our ‘closer’ type on players who just puts too much pressure on teams trying to come back. Just pray that you don’t see a Mathis/Foster/Brock/Freeney defensive line because that means you are in a hole and aren’t coming back.

Just a moment on your Run D.

The colts run D was ranked officially 24th in the league, which is surprising since, as a good team, usually that means that people are throwing more on you and rushing less. That’s worse than both the Bengals and the Chargers. Many pundits point out that we’d have trouble if we keep trying to run laterally since your ends and backers have such speed, but if we do run north/south, how worried would you be about your D holding up for 60 minutes? Are the rankings flawed, as in is there a reason 24th in the league vs the number 1 rushing O shouldn’t be a worry?
Thanks for doing this, very sporting of you.

Regarding Regular Season Stats..

It’s a funny thing, the atmosphere of change which permeates the postseason. It’s funny because the Ravens boasted a running attack which, in the week prior to taking on Indy, racked up 250 yards and 4 TDs on the ground @ New England and the “Defensive Genius” Bill Belichick. And what happened when they came to Indy? 87 total yards on the ground, zero TDs.

2006, the year the Colts won the Super Bowl, the Colts had the WORST rushing defense in the entire NFL, and was just coming off a game in which we allowed 344 yards on the ground in a 44-17 loss to Jacksonville. What happened in the playoffs? The Colts shut down the Larry Johnson and the Chiefs, holding the 1789-yard rusher to 32 yards on 13 carries. The next game the Colts played 1200-yard rusher Jamal Lewis and the Ravens and held him to 53 yds rushing.

I realize these are mixed stats from 4 years ago and 1 game from this postseason, but the point is, when it comes to playoff football, everything changes. You can throw regular season stats and trends out the window because they matter only to people attempting to build flimsy arguments which persuade mindless sheep.

While the Colts where officially ranked 24th in rushing defense in the Regular Season, they are also officially ranked 3rd in rushing defense in the post season, having held the 5th-ranked regular season rushing team (the Ravens) to nearly half their average output on the ground.

Running laterally or up and down makes no difference. The Colts do a remarkable job of identifying the ways teams can beat them, and thus focus on making sure it won’t happen. Mark my words, the Colts will do the same thing this week that they did last week, which is force the opposing QB to beat them. Despite the bitching and moaning about how “different” Jets fans claim they are than the Ravens, the fact remains that on film they are quite similar. And when it comes to their strengths and weaknesses as a team, they are practically identical.

Both teams pound the ball, play incredible defense, and have very young and inexperienced QBs. The Colts will drop an extra man or two into the box, blitz your Sanchize like crazy, and force Mark to make plays with his arm.

I have no worries about our defense at all. I’m really only worried about committing a stupid turnover and losing the field position battle. If we take care of the ball, we should take care of business. It’ll be a good game, but I believe the Jets are overmatched, out-flanked and out-gunned.

I Bleed Blue! Go Colts!

Hey man

No bitching and moaning here. Just pointing out the stats. I asked a question. No worries about D is a strong statement. We have tendencies to play well late on the Run, and your two BEASTS on the Ends might have worn themselves out by then.

Are we VERY different than the Ravens? Probably not, the difference is that while Ray Rice is a beast, and Greene is only getting there, we have better run blocking (maybe the best in the game with the way Faneca and Mangold are playing) and a slightly better D (IMO) while the QB’s are a wash (maybe Sanchez has the edge with how his confidence is right now)

Also you’d better hope that Out-matched is not how Indy starts to portray itself because say what you want about Rex, he’s shown he can rile his players up. I think this is a closer game than you’re giving credit.

Its funny how we took that model into your house Week 16 and spanked you with it.

Your front seven is fast, but theyre small and dainty. Their speed only comes into effect when teams try to get to the edges. The Jets will go jumbo sets and pound you straight up the middle; maybe pull a guard from time to time to kick out Freeny and Mathis and wear them out for the later rounds. By the end of the 2nd or beginning of the 3rd those little guys will start bracing for beating instead of flying to the ball. They will wilt just like all the others. Just like they did last time.

Can’t wait to see who Greene’s next victim will be. My money is on Bethea.

Colts Run D

saying that you have the 3rd best run d in the playoffs when you’ve played one game (btw, it’s the same playoffs that featured the GB, Arizona, NO, and Philly and New England Run D’s) is less persuasive to me than explaining to me why those season numbers don’t suggest that we can keep this to a game with a minimal amount of possessions where we tire out your great (but at times over eager) Defensive Line.

Facts Suck

11-7

We’ll not get into if the record would have been a dashing 7-9 or 8-8 had Cincy kitty-cats and the Colts not taken the day off and your team failed to make the playoffs.

You can stop acting like the Jets are the second coming of the 1972 Dolphins. The Jets are a good team. They are not an elite team, and barring an improbable Superbowl win are likely to be immortalized on someone’s “Road to the Superbowl 2009” video as the over-matched, but scrappy wild-card usurper that put up a valiant first quarter and then was drubbed back to the Meadowlands 32-10 in a game that features tons of highlights for the winners.

Now on to Freeney and Mathis and the undersized D-Line of the Colts. Reality is that those dainty little ends are the best in the AFC. Both are at their best at the end of games. Both line up against bigger linemen every game, some better, some worse. The outcome is usually the same. Colts Win.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I do believe that your expectations for what will happen in the game are a little north of fantasy land. If the Jets win, and I think they can, it will be an ugly, low scoring scrap where a big defensive play or a special teams play wins it.

by WaynesWorld on Jan 23, 2010 11:10 AM EST up reply actions

I'll try to give a statistical answer..

I would say that the Colts’ 24th ranking in rush D is a bit skewed by a few games:

Week 2: Miami Dolphins, 239 yards
The infamous Wildcat Game, wherein the Colts had the ball for less than 15 minutes. I don’t have the numbers on me, but as I recall the Dolphins got the majority of their yards from the Wildcat, which the Colts were woefully unprepared for. While there’s no excuse for getting gashed like that from a gameplan they should have seen coming, no other team has yet been able to replicate Miami’s gameplan.

Week 6: Saint Louis, 155 yards
About 2/3 of these rushing yards came in the second half, which the Colts entered with a 21-3 lead. As I recall, they spent most the half in prevent, so Jackson was able to accumulate a lot of what were essentially garbage yards.

Week 15: New York, 202 yards
The Jets had 54 yards in the first half, 148 in the second. I’m not sure at what point the defense started going out, but I think it’s safe to assume the nearly threefold increase in rushing yards was the result of the Colts mostly playing backups on D.

Week 16, Buffalo, 248 yards
Again, most of the defense rested this game.

Of course this doesn’t mean the Colts are great at defending the run (see week 11 vs. Houston, 122 yards; week 12 vs. Tennessee, 142 yards; week 14 vs. Jacksonville, 139 yards), but they’re certainly not pushovers either. The Colts’ run D is better than it has been in the past. I’d say that – when fully healthy and actually trying – they have a middle-of-the road rushing D, probably 15th-18th. In fact, while the Colts are indeed 24th in yards per game, they’re a more respectable 16th in yards per carry.

I wouldn’t say there’s no reason for worry, as the Jets are certainly a team that can take advantage of the Colts’ middling run defense, and if everything goes according to their plan they probably could wear out the Colts’ DL by the end of the game. However, I believe the Colts run D is more competent than they at first appear, and that Sanchez is going to have to make some plays with his arm for the Jets to win. That’s just my opinion, though.

As a small anecdote, I think remember reading on FO at one point that while the Colts are not a great run D, they are surprisingly good at stopping runs straight up the middle – ranked 9th or something. Can someone back me up on that, or am I just making stuff up?

by indytoad on Jan 21, 2010 1:48 AM EST up reply actions

can't back you up but will point out the bend but don't break mentality

The “dreadful” Colts run defense gave up 14 TDs during the season. The vaunted number 1 rush D of the Jets? 16. The Colts are very effective at getting stops when it matters (something they never did in the past). They still give up their fair share of 3rd downs, but if it is 3rd and 5+ there is a good chance the drive is over.

So the yards from scrimmage stat is a bit inflated from a few of those above games and from the yards picked up between the 20’s. Rarely, does this defense get gashed for big plays, see Frank Gore.

I'll take a late-game back-breaking 60 yard TD from Shonn Greene again.

Long runs are essentially meaningless if the total rushing yardage is relatively low, as well as the attempts, and there’s no TD attached. But any long TD in a close game is unforgivable.

Colts Run D is actually pretty good...

It is a little surprising that they only ranked 24th during the regular season. Excluding the two games where the backups played, the only time a saw a running game dictate tempo was the Dolphins game. Teams still seem to be of the opinion that running the ball 30 times/game and owning ToP is the way to beat the Colts. It’s just how teams have chosen to play us. We have really limited some of the top rushers in the league this year. Run D is not really a liability any more. Honestly, I would much rather see a team try to pound the ball all game because it makes it more difficult to come back when you are behind. The Colts are going to score points, that’s a given. At some point the other team is going to need a flurry to respond. That’s hard to do on the ground.

by invisibulman on Jan 21, 2010 8:31 AM EST up reply actions

Why is it a given that the Colts will score points against the stingiest defense in the league?

Your team escaped a loss by the skin of your teeth on at least 3 occassions. If you think the Miami game wasn’t pure luck, then there’s no cure for your homerism (didn’t Ginn drop 2 TDs in that game?).

And your run D is terrible, you haven’t stopped it all year. Not even last week, where the Ravens and their injured QB played a bad game and the Colts benefited from a few fortunate bounces.

The Colts will be under enormous pressure to score TDs because their possessions will be limited and the Jets will be running the ball up and down the field. Our pass D is far superior to Miami’s. If Manning doesn’t play perfectly, you’ll be feeling a lot a Charger fan on Monday.

The only thing thats stupid is thinking that the Colts will be able to tame our run game for 4 qtrs.

You should avoid ad hominem attacks and keep it to football. It was a cheap flag because the contact was incidental. Lewis was NOT leading with his head. The “foul” was not what the rule was implemented to protect against. So yes, its a phantom call because it DIDN’T happen. It was another way to get the Princess and her maids a new set of downs so that they could score a TD.

Your paranoid if you think all these calls are to benifit a certain team. if you think that watch replays of freeney and you will see

holding on almost every play and they are not called for example. Also the rule states that helmet to helmet gets called. Also even in the replay you can not honestly say he wasn’t leading with his head because that was what he was going with. Also yes that is what it was implemented to do is protect the players from hits to the head.

Incidental doesn’t tend to play a part in those calls. FWIW it looked to me like Lewis led with he forearm and follow through with the helmet. The contact was most certainly to the head though. It was one of the obvious helmet to helmet calls you will see.

by invisibulman on Jan 22, 2010 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

I totally disagree. It was questionable at best.

He led with his shoulder and forearm, the receiver adjusted his position and the helmet contact was incidental. Lewis didnt lead with his helmet in order to collide with the receivers helmet. The receiver wasnt vulnerbable and the collision was mild. This is playoff football. It was a cheap cheap call and completely deflated the Ravens.

by Crackback on Jan 22, 2010 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

really??? a player is in the air and he isn't vulnerable??

also the call was made because it was helmet to helmet (the fact is the contact was made) Oh and officials dont have the benefit of replay and it goes pretty fast and so when they see helmet to helmet they call it. It happens every time there is a helmet to helmet because they have been told to really step up and enforce that.

If you want relevancy, how about a few statistics.

The Colts have allowed only 14 rushing TDs all season (your Jets gave up 16). Most of their run yardage given up is between the 30s. Which means their run D is underrated and not as vulnerable as many believe. See the reasons for inflation above.

The Colts Cover 2 defense doesn’t give up many big plays, so eventually the Jets are going to have to throw. When that happens I believe everyone here will cringe at the prospect of Sanchez trying to win a game. There’s a reason he’s only allowed about 15-20 throws a game anymore. He’s essentially Jamarcus Russell with more interceptions.

As for the offense. The Colts have arguably the greatest QB of all time on the field. Kerry Rhodes is now hobbled so even if Reggie Wayne is shut down, Dallas Clark will have a field day. If Clark doesn’t go off you still have to be concerned about Austin Collie, Pierre Garcon and Joe Addai receiving out of the back field.

If the Colts score 20 points I believe this game is over. The Jets can run all day but most of those yards will end in field goals. No one has ever beat a Peyton Manning offense by kicking field goals.

Notice of all the stuff I said, none of it has to do with who wants it more or who is more hyped for this game. These guys are professional athletes and as Nick Mangold said, if you need any more motivation than being in the game then you need to find a new career. Believing in yourself won’t do a damn thing for a team. Being good and executing will.

Every single one of those RBs who played our starters for the entire FOUR quarters went home with a loss.

Like I pointed out above, our defense gave up only TEN touchdowns all season. That includes the one given to you guys by our bench and two in week 2 against the Miami wildcat. The Jets can run all they want. Greene and Jones can each have 250 yards. But they’re not getting into the end zone and that’s what really counts. Only 6 teams gave up less rushing TDs…and guess what? Your “number one” defense isn’t one of them.
The number one running back Chris Johnson came to town and got 147 yards in TWO games and not a single TD.

On the flip side, Joseph Addai rushed for 40 yards and a TD in just 6 attempts against the YOUR Jets in week 16. That averages to 6.1y/c – that’s nearly double his season average and an entire yard more than Greene’s season average. Your two RBs picked up 200 yards in almost 40 carries yet the end result was the same as Addai’s – only SIX points.

Don’t put up random numbers without any argument because the one’s you put up prove NOTHING.

You were lucky.

Lucky to beat the Phins.
Lucky to beat the Jags (twice).
Lucky to beat the Ravens.
Lucky to beat the Pats.
Lucky to beat the Texans.

Your luck has run out. Karma is on our side.

But I was pointing out to the gentalman/woman above the falsity of his/her claim that very few RBs have had good games against your little D.

The Jets were near the top of the league in rushing TDs. We’ve rushed for 3 TDs in this post-season against better defenses than the little Colt D. We’ll definitely score running the ball, that goes without saying.

The only question is whether we’ll be able to keep your offense in check. I think we will.

The Jets will win on Sunday either bc we’re just a better football team right now who match up favorably or bc of Karma. Either way is fine with me. A win is a win is a win.

Karma

Its a principle of universal balance. Like yin and yang. The Colts have benefited from fortuitous breaks all year long. The universe will balance itself and go against you. Your franchise has thumbed its nose at history and history will respond on Sunday.

I don’t where it comes from or who doles it out but I know that it exists. Just like I don’t know where the universe comes from or who created it, but I know it exists.

You can say you don’t believe in it and that ironies are nothing more than mere coincidences.

I believe differently. I believe its too ironic that in the game that your franchise decided to flip off history that you were playing the Jets. I believe its too ironic that we probably would not have made the playoffs if you did not flip the bird to history. I believe that theres a reason that the Jets have surpassed insurmountable odds to be in this game, against your team, on Sunday.

Sometimes its just too ironic to be a coincidence. I think that THIS is one of those times.

by Crackback on Jan 22, 2010 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

I never knew history had a mind of it's own.

OH NO history is coming to get me! Please. Why don’t you focus on actual football. According to you, karma is gonna be the only thing keeping us from winning. Lucky your Jets have that.

The kickers were under pressure to make big plays which they did not because of the immense pressure on them. Arizona’s kicker missed one at the end of regulation in the wild card round. Yet they still won.

He is practically begging his karma gods to help his outmatched Jets beat the vastly superior team that is the Colts. However, even he knows that their is no such thing as karma and if there is, it will not be affecting the outcome of this game. Peyton Manning + Colts > “karma”

Our offensive line is great. There isn’t 1 weak link on the line. Also we have the best blocking full back in the league and our jumbo set is excellent. So don’t think your DT will be able to actually shut down our running game. Our running game has been held to under 150 yards once since thanksgiving. That was the game we lost. So basically to beat us shut down our run game which is very hard to do. We ran all over the bengals top 5 run stopping unit twice. Your run defense is average as best.

WHAT??!?!?!

The Jets had 296 TOTAL yards in that game, 142 of them rushing. They lost because of the 5 INTs (6 if you include Weatherford’s). I doubt it would be easy to find stats on it, but I’d be surprised if more than 5% of the teams with 6 INTs won the game.

6 INTs and the Jets D sill only gave up 16 points. And it’s kind of hard to score when almost half your drives end because of a turnover. INTs haven’t been a problem lately, and, gee wow, the Jets have been winning.

And as far as offensive prowess goes, if you only give up 14.8 points a game, you don’t HAVE to score 35 to win….

At least not the running game. But if you have no passing game, it really limits your margin for error. 1st and 15 isn’t a problem for the Colts. If the Jets are facing the same, my money is on the D. I think the Jets run game will do just fine as long as they don’t get behind early. The problem is converting yards to points. This is something at which the Colts D excels. One dimension just won’t cut it.

Maybe I whould be more specific, since apparently "home game vs. the Bills" doesn't quite compute.

The date was 10/18/09….not 12/3/09….Not your away game vs. the Bills…your HOME game…like I said in the title of my post.

TJ had 210 yards on the ground, Leon Washington had 99, Sanchez and richardson combined for 9….which equals a grand total of a hell of a lot more than 142.

So your point is...

That rushing for 300 yards in a game is not a demonstration of offensive prowess? Or that a Rookie QB from SoCal playing in his first ever pro cold weather game threw too many picks and that somehow means that the 300 yards weren’t really that impressive? If you want to pick a hole go with Buffalo’s crappy D. I prefer to look at that game as the following: Our rook qb threw 5 picks and we lost in Overtime. Sounds like Rushing Prowess to me.

I can rush 300 yards to the store but it means little if I don’t have the money to purchase anything.

Question on total Possessions.

I think we’ll all agree that the Colts have significantly more offensive fireworks on display, and are on paper a better team.

The theory to this has always been, in any possession sport (Football, Basketball, etc) that a better team should aim for more total possessions, and the underdog for less. The reasoning is that a “lesser” team has a better chance of doing better in 5 series for each team than 10 series because one or two key stops, or fluke plays would weigh heavier.

So, considering that we have an offense keyed around running the ball and chewing up clock, and you have a Pass game (run game too I suppose, but even Colts fans, the run is only for a change of pace for you guys) designed around the short pass, and longer 11 play 73 yard drives rather than the quick hit, my question is the following.

Do you think Caldwell and Manning might want to change it up and go more for the big play in this game, in order to maximize total possessions and/or try to take advantage of a blitzing D? Or do you think they’d rather not shake from their game plans that have worked well enough to date?

Quick addition

A good example of this is the Roy Williams led Tar Heels who tend to have more talent than their opponents and who admittedly push the pace for the very reason I mentioned above

GOOD QUESTION

Against running teams the Colts generally try to score quickly and get two scores ahead. Most teams will abandon running when faced with a 10-14 point deficit which is where Freeney and Mathis are at their best.

The key for run-heavy teams is to score touchdowns, not field goals and not end drives in punts or on downs (DON’T GO FOR IT ON 4th and 3). The Colts offense has the same issue, btw that the Chargers did – 3 and outs.

by indymike on Jan 20, 2010 11:52 PM EST up reply actions

Well that's the theory...

The Colts actually have a quick hit offense. Not always big plays down field, but a lot of plays that chew up 8 – 15 yard chunks. Drives are usually very short on ToP. They run a lot of no-huddle or semi-no huddle plays to push the tempo. Most would agree that Manning is at his best in hurry-up mode.

Teams always try to grind it out against the Colts D. Sounds good in theory, but then you end up with the Miami game. (perhaps an extreme example.) Miami owned ToP, but as soon as they fell behind; it was over. They had no chance of scoring quickly enough to match the Colts at the end.

Jets actually have a pretty good chance

Just copy the dolphin’s game plan against the Colts and add in a better defense. The dolphins nearly won, however Ted Ginn can’t catch a cold, so he dropped two gamewining touchdown passes in the last two minutes. With your defense however, Manning may not have multiple 6 second 70 yd touchdown drives.

the difference is the Dolphins actually have wrinkles in their run game

the Jets are going to have to learn the wildcat awfully fast to pull off what the Dolphins did.

I'm glad you think we deserve to be in the playoffs

So many people talk as if the Colts were running all over the Jets in week sixteen even though it was only a five point Colts lead that the Jets would have erased with a single touchdown. Colts are going to have their hands very full with the D.

I figure though, since the Jets’ passing game isn’t all that great, that the Colts main defensive strategy will be to just shut down the run, no? That would make Sanchez duke it out with Peyton Manning, which will inevitably rule in the Colts’ favor. Any word on if that is indeed what the Colts gameplan is?

2009 Dallas Cowboys: 11-5!!!
2009 New York Jets: not 11-5 :(, but PLAYOFFS!!!
2009-2010 Dallas Mavericks: 57-25, despite the recent molestation at the hands of the Lakers

They opened against the Ravens with 9! in the box

and made Flacco/Mason hit on some passes before they backed off at all. After the Ravens got a FG on their first drive the Colts switched to 8 in the box and the Ravens never scored again.

I expect cover-3 with Bullitt well into the box in all but obvious passing downs. They are going to force a running team to hit on the mid range passes that a cover-3 gives up before they’ll let them run against an unstacked box.

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

It's shocking how much can slip your perception

Question:

Why did the NFL say it was going to monitor your PA guys during the AFCCG?

by mad science on Jan 23, 2010 6:52 PM EST reply actions

why would you ask a childish question like that.

Because I want to know colts fans' thoughts on the matter.

I heard it was a direct response to what happened in the BAL/INDY game. The same noise heard during previous games.

Can't find an NFL statement to link

Heard it in passing on the radio and saw a very biased youtube video saying the NFL was monitoring the PA in Indy. NFL has said that a previous incident, 2007 vs Pit. was CBS’ fault. Today is the first I have heard of it, but if the NFL was actually keeping an eye on the Colts this Sunday, I shouldn’t be having much difficulty finding a credible link about it. This does seem to be a recurring theme though, so it will be interesting to see if there is any difference this week.
