Kudos to Rex for not going for it on 4th and less than 1, deep in their territory.
I think earlier in the year Rex would have gone for it. He would have been defensive-minded and thought that there’s no way his defense squanders good field position. Instead he made the smart call and took the 3, put us up by 10, and let the TEAM win the game, not just the defense. I think it showed that Rex has completed the transition from D-coordinator to Head Coach and it was good to see.
So Long As Rex Wins
as far as I’m concerned, he can talk all the junk he wants. Be assured, Broncos Country loves the Jets this weekend. It would be nice to see the Dolts fall short of their dream. War Philip crying tons of Rivers with Bartholomew Scott having a field day putting pressure on him. The Jets are playing with house money now! Good luck to you guys!

Appreciate that, like you say playing with house money, nothing to lose, everything to gain. I’m sure there are a few players on that D that want to show that they can beat the best.

The more I look at it the more i like this matchup.
They seem to be a team built for the big play. We rarely give up the big play.
Revis shuts down Jackson like always.
We handled Gonzalez, we can handle Gates.
I thought Rivers was having a better year than Brady but thats not the case. Brady scorched us with Welker in the 2nd game. They don’t have a Welker. And you saw what we did to them in the 1st game when they didnt have Welker.
They may do a lot of check downs and screens to their backs, but that won’t work to well against us if you can’t focus our attention to the interior with a running game. Besides, we’ll surrender the short stuff and keep everything in front of us and come up and lay big hits.
I think we can run the ball with violence and make them play our game.
How can you say Brady had a better year? They had the same amount of TDs, but Brady had 5 more picks. Rivers finished the season with a QB rating 8.2 points higher than Tom’s. Rivers got a full yard more per attempt than Tom. Just because the Chargers don’t have a Welker doesn’t mean it’s not an offense that can be effective against the Jets. The Patriots offense is complete different, relying on 4 and 5 WR sets and lots of short passes. The Chargers offense typically has 2 WRs, 1 TE and 2 RBs and relies on the versatility of the players at those positions to create mismatches.
This is a team that will take the big play when it’s there, but can matriculate down the field just as easily if the defense is covering deep. The reason there are a lot of big plays is that eventually the defense leaves Jackson or Floyd one-on-one downfield and Rivers likes to test those matchups.
Screens are not set up by runs up the middle. Screens are essentially a way to counteract blitzes. When the Jets are sending 5 or 6 guys at Rivers, he’s looking for Gates (who screens a lot) or Sproles over their heads and behind a line of blockers. The Chargers are one of the worst running teams in the league, but one of the best screen teams.

Brady had more picks but he also had more attempts. And he had a much tougher schedule.
Rivers is good. But he’s no where near Brady yet. Brady is probably either the best QB that ever played or is a close 2nd to Peyton Manning. Rivers is very good, but not in their league yet.
And i don’t think he’s good enough to beat this defense.
The Pats are the best screen team in the league.
They couldnt beat us with screens.
Different era.
For those of us old enough to remember Super Bowl Three, it was a different time. Yes, it was an upset, but it’d be wrong to try to match that year with this one. Can anyone remember the years following Super Bowl III for the Jets. If you can’t, consider yourself lucky.
Rex is building for the near term but for beyond as well. And that’s a hugh difference over some guys that got to do a Brylcream commercial for that season.
