Jets vs Chargers -- Matchups to Watch
Date: Sunday 4:30 EST
Location: Qualcomm Stadium -- San Diego, CA..
Matchup: AFC #2 Seed Chargers (13-3) vs AFC # 5 Seed Jets (10-7)
Round: AFC Divisional Playoffs
Current Winning Streaks: The Chargers have won their last 11 games, while the Jets have won 6 of 7.
Matchups to Watch
Darrelle Revis vs Vincent Jackson:
There is a strong possibility Revis will win the DPOY come Tuesday. What more is to be said about the guy who has held opposing WR1's to under 35 ypg this season? He gives new meaning to the term "shutdown corner", and has been excellent in defending against the deep ball this year. He has also been phenomenal in holding WR's to little, if any, yards after a catch.
On the other side of the ball, Jackson has been a great big-play guy for the San Diego offense this year. He averages 17.2 YPC, and 4.5 catches/game. He may be playing with a chip on his shoulder, as he was snubbed of a pro-bowl mention.
Kerry Rhodes vs Antonio Gates:
The Jets have been excellent in defending against receiving Tight Ends this year, and Rhodes has been playing the best football of his career over the last couple weeks. This week he will have his hands full, as he will be pitted up against one of the top 3 receiving TE's in the league. Norv Turner has said he thinks Gates is hands-down, the #1 TE. Gates is a huge red-zone threat and the Jets will need to clamp down when San Diego gets within scoring range.
Dustin Keller vs San Diego Safeties: (this matchup via our man Crackback)
The Chargers safeties have been inconsistent in defending opposing TE's this year. If they choose to blitz out of the secondary, Keller could find running room and have a big game on Sunday.
While SD has completely shut down a couple of TE's this year, it should be noted they had the benefit of facing some bad teams with extremely ineffective TE'.s. Good, Receiving TE's have burned them bad this year.
Opposing TE's that have had success against SD:
Oak- Zach Miller has torched them twice. 148 total yards (96 & 52)….
Denver – Scheffler 101 yards/1 TD…. But then only 12 yards next meeting.
Pitt – Heath Miller 70 yards… 2 TD’s. Rape.
Bengals- Foschi 82 yards
Clev- 80 yards to evan moore?!?!
Philly – Celek 47 yards, 1 TD
Dallas – Witten 49 yards
Skins- 48 yards (46 davis/2 yoder)
Jets Stout, Veteran Defense vs High-Octane Chargers Offense:
The Jets field the #1 defense in PPG (14.7) and also YPG (253.3)
The Bolts have scored 20+ points in 22 consecutive games.
IMO, they field the most balanced offense in the NFL, and this attack is very hard to stop. They have so many weapons that can beat you -- even more-so then the Colts.
Jets Pass Defense vs Phillip Rivers:
Rivers has had an exceptional year and was a front-runner in MVP voting. He is easily playing the best football of his career. He averages 8.8 yards per pass... and has an incredible TD/INT ratio of 3.11 (28 : 9). What makes him so good, is how smart he is with the football, and the decisions he makes.
The Jets secondary has been exceptional this year with all the looks Pettine has thrown at opposing QB's.... and are the #1-ranked pass defense giving up a ridiculously-low 150 ypg.

Not always.
Colts vs. Ravens? It was a few years back when Mcnair was their qb. And Matt you spelled Darrelle wrong. Shame Shame Shame.
Jesus dude, calm down. I edited it in about 60 seconds. I’m surprised you even caught that.
Tough crowd.

Good stuff Matt, some tough match-ups that really could go either way. I would add one for the Jets offence though, say the run game v run defence, that’s where we win the game IMO.
Regardless, should be a fantastic match-up this coming weekend, I can’t wait. Like someone said, we are playing with house money, no pressure on us at all.

Also the TE. Hopefully Keller is back and here to stay.
Not sure but i think they have trouble covering TEs.
Very Interesting Point
Did you ask their guy John (obviousman) in his thread near the top of the page?
If he could give us an objective response that’d be cool…. if not I can look it up. Good point though crack.

Im not asking that guy anything. He's anything but objective.
He thinks the Bolts are unbeatable.
In fact he did say that TE is weakness.
Right after he said Jammer and Cromartie are as good as Revis. Can’t talk to a guy like that.
definitely a weekness
Keller could have a big game

And then the rest -- notice the lower quality of talent in a couple of the teams... especially KC.
Teams they have shut down:
NYG – 31 yards to Boss + Johnson combo
Balty- Heap, 1 catch, 9 yards, TD
MIA –0 yards. Fasano lol.
Tenny- 0 yards, but vintage vince went 8/21
Both KC games… 0 yards, but quality of TE extremely low here loll.

Some good ones mixed in with some bad ones, keeping Witten to 39 yards is decent, but then having Miller go for 148 is dreadful, especially considering the QB’s.

That 148 is in two games. And the Raiders aren’t the same Raiders in AFCW games (just ask Denver).

-Zach Miller’s 1st time, Sheffler’s 1st time and Heath Miller were all because of Clinton Hart (former starting SS that was cut).
-The yards given up to the Redskins were after the starter were pulled.
-Celek was open underneath because the Chargers were shutting down the big play to Maclin/Jackson.
-Nobody knows who the hell Evan Moore is or why he had such a great game against the Chargers. He was signed from the practice squad on the day before the game.
So, when you look at how the team has done since Hart was cut….
Z Miller – 52 yards
Sheffler – 12 yards
Forschi – 82 yards
Moore – 80 yards
Celek – 47 yards, 1 TD
Witten – 49 yards
Miami – 0 yards
KC – 0 yards
etc. etc. What I’m getting at is that the TE coverage has been greatly improved since Hart was released. Also, a lot of this yardage is racked up on a bunch of check-down catches (for 4-5 yards) that happen because the WRs are blanketed. So don’t expect Keller to be running free down the middle of the field.

Definitely cutting Hart was addition by subtraction. The guy was terrible, but Ellison is quite solid.

And in fact, according to DVOA
The Chargers are the 9th-best-ranked team in covering TEs this season with a -7.9% DVOA rating.
So not as bad as has been perceived.
No alcohol and no snowballs for these Jets.
Nothing like homers. To give you a heads up, the real experts, the guys that set the lines, have the Chargers by a touchdown. When it’s a blowout, maybe the classy Jets fans can take out an equipment manager with some snowballs (think 1995). I can’t think of a group of fans that is more deserving of the whoopin’ that is coming for ya. How is that whole alcohol sales thing during games going for you guys anyways?
Jets = Raiders of the east coast.
And an underdog has never won a playoff football game in NFL history........?
Who cares what they set the line at. That’s a soft number anyways, it’s an opener. Just looking for early action at low-limits so they can get an indicator of where the line should move. That way they don’t get beat badly.
And the real experts don’t set the lines genius…. computers and software do that. The real experts don’t work for sportsbooks/linesmakers, and are in vegas slamming the lines, and so far plenty of their money is coming in on the jets.
Take your ball and go home.
Chargers = Patriots of the West Coast – Ignorant/Arrogant but Clueless.

At least the Patriots win.
All the Dolts do is underachieve. Of course they win their division and get first rounds byes all the time. But yhey play the damn Raiders and Chiefs twice a year.
I can’t wait to watch the Jets dance on the Dolt logo next week and watch Tomlinson spring to life in an outrage, suddenly uninhibited by the phantom hammy/groin he’s sure to pull in practice this week.
AFC West = Joke
Seriously, I was laughing my ass off seeing some of these awful TE’s that SD faced this year loll. And QB’s. Great strength of schedule.
AFC West what a powerhouse division. We could go 13-3 if we were in that joke also.

Okay, real football comment
I think in all honesty (and despite the trash talking) that the Jets match up pretty well against the Chargers. The Chargers run defense has been pretty poor all year and I’ve watched a number of teams move the ball between the 20s at will on the ground. The Chargers cannot clog up the middle without Jamal Williams there to draw the double teams. Its not until the field shrinks inside the red zone that they can jam up the run game. I think that the Jets will rack up close to 200 rush yards, I’d bet money on it.
I do think that the Chargers corners (while not as good as Revis) are good, but not elite, which could allow the Bolts to stack the box against the run. Jammer is good, but draws flags, Cromartie has a tendency to get beaten deep. It goes without saying that they’ll be using an 8-man front and safety blitz schemes regularly to try to put a lid on Thomas Jones and daring Sanchez to air it out.
The Chargers have traditionally (over the last 10 years) been very weak against the tight end. They’ve gotten better since they dumped safety ‘turnstyle’ Hart mid-season, still their younger safeties are still vulnerable. Keller has a chance to have a huge game. I’ve only watched a couple of Jets games, but I can’t think that Edwards will be much of a threat with the number of drops that he has had. Cotchery is good and I think that his matchup against Cromartie is the one to watch.
On the other side of the ball, the Bolts have not been able to run the ball at all this year. Contrary to what people think, LT is still as lethal as ever, he just hasn’t seen a hole produced by his O-line all year and has been hit behind the LOS more times than I could count. They are good in pass d, terrible in run blocking. To get around this, the Chargers have used the screen pass effectively all year as an extension of the run game. I think that if the Chargers have any big plays coming from Sproles or Tomlinson, it’ll be in the screen game. I really think that if the jets can shut down the screen, the deep threat of Jackson and Floyd are completely negated.
In the pass game, Jackson is going to Revis all over him. He is a good receiver (but not great) and I can see him bringing down a jump ball our two using his height over Revis, but I would expect him to be pretty quiet all game. The real question is can the Jets shut down Gates and if they do Floyd step up? I haven’t seen Rhodes in action, can he shut down Gates? I think that this is where we’ll see the double team in the passing game. The other receiver Floyd is an average receiver that is 6’5", He uses his height and draws more pass interference calls than catches balls. He has dropped a few clutch balls this year and was benched 2 years ago for doing the same (that is why they picked up Chambers originally).
I think a big factor could be in special teams. Is Feely going to be punting the ball next week? He is a good kicker and all, but the punting game is going to be a HUGE factor is this one.
In all honesty, I still remember that game in 1995 when a punk-ars nailed the equipment manager in the head with an iceball and he was out cold for 20 minutes. You guys are right, every team has its classless a-holes, but that one was so far over the top that it goes down in the hall of shame. I wouldn’t be surprised if they bring it up during the game broadcast, they did during the 2004 wildcard game. If that a-hole was sitting next to me at Qualcomm I would have thrown him over the railing.
Despite all of my s**t-talking, I say that this game will be a close low scoring affair. Down to the 4th quarter.
good points
but your completely wrong about Floyd.
He probably has some of the best hands in the entire league, the only reason the chargers brought along Chambers was because Jackson was still raw and not fully developed, not to mention Floyd was injured.
Life is like riding a bicycle, to keep your balance, you must keep moving.-Einstein
Every single Chargers offensive skill player is an above-average catcher.
Just a fact, Jack. Malcom Floyd is a slightly less-physical Braylon Edwards with stickum in place of the WD-40.

Dude when you can offer football posts like that, I would leave the trash talk out man, that was an excellent post and well worth reading. I will just quickly address the 95 incident, and I’m sure most if not all Jets fans think that guy is a complete ass-hole. Unfortunately we can’t account for every single fan at the game, so some idiots have a few drinks and get a little courage to do something cowardly and stupid, that’s what that guy did.
On the Gates v Rhodes, that’s the big question really, and I think that is the key match-up of the week. Rhodes earlier in the season was catching some flack, we were frustrated with his lack of play making. He was not wrapping the tackler, he looked tentative and seemed to be shying away from contact. So like all good coaches should do, Rex told him to ride the pine. He took him out of the base formations, and inserted Smith who did a stand up job. There is nothing that gets you motivated like seeing your job done by someone else. He went out there and made plays, he hit people, he made plays, intercepted passes, started getting his shoulder in but also bringing the arms around to bring him down. Now we are seeing the Kerry Rhodes of 2007 where confidence is up that he is going to start making those plays. Can he control Gates, I really don’t know, I think it depends if we get pressure on Rivers. If he has time to stand and pick a pass, he will pick us apart, luckily this season, no QB has done that.
I doubt Feely is punting, we have worked out so many punters over the last 6 months, Mike Tannenbaum has them on speed dial. If there is any chance at all, that Weatherford could miss this game again, a punter will be signed as back-up. Punter will likely be T.J Conley. It would be a shame because Weatherford not only does a decent job punting but he has pace as well, we have executed several fake punts this season, and it was mainly down to his foot speed.

For Real??
Come on guys is it hope? Who really believes that any LB or Safety can stop Gates?? He scored 9 TDs and had over 1150 yds just to start and he led the league in third down conversions on a team the doesn’t usually need third downs (look it up).
OK, really, can I get a show of hands
Against good teams toward the end of the season, Gates did nada.
Why would you assume he’s going to torch the best passing D in the league.
No one guy can stop Gates
But you can double him with a LB and a S. Takes both. Anybody he can’t smoke he can steamroll, but maybe not two of ’em.

By that, I mean they’ve fixed the defense from last year, so it’s gone from stinky to average, and fixed the pass game so it’s gone from spectacular to surreal. Otherwise about the same, maybe a little less effective running.

If they bring the secondary up and blitz too often, I think Keller
can burn them on some counter-type plays. He killed Cincy a couple times when they would blitz a safety and Keller had nothing but daylight in front of him, as they initially thought he was just blocking and paid no attention to him.
Will look up later in the week SD’s blitzing schemes and whether or not they like to zone blitz safeties off the edge. I know Weddle does but he’s banged up and currently listed as day-to-day.
Obviously SD will watch the film from Sat and keep this in mind, but can they stop it? If he can hold on to balls and not pull a Braylon, he could have a huge game on Sun.

Classless jerk right here
Whoops, Matt’s evil “computer bookies” have the line already moving up to 7.5 to 9 up from an opening of 7. Ooooooh, burned Matt. Those Vegas experts are piling on the wrong direction.
Way to address the main part of the message: the scumbag portion of the Jet populace. So far the only one that has addressed it is David. To David, touche.
Classless Jerk – out
hmm
sounds more like a jealous Giants fan that lost money betting against the Jets this week than a Chargers fan to me especially with that comment about no alcohol at the stadium. Who the bleep gives a rat’s ass what the lines are! (unless you are dumb enough to gamble on sports) They don’t predetermine the outcome of the game. Hey dumbass how about you go b_tch on your own message board. Your team is a disgrace to the stadium.

do you even know what the betting line represents?
And sounds more like a dolphin fan to me, the ignorance gives it away.
The Packers were suppose to destroy the Cards and the Pats were suppose to beat the Ravens
If everything always went down the way the experts say it will, would anyone even watch? No. While I think the Chargers are footballs best team, I think the Jets have a chance. They have a chance if Braylon actually catches the ball, Keller and Smith remain in the gameplan and most important, special teams have to do a better job in coverage. If the Jets allow the Chargers great field position, this game will make the Eagles/Cowboys game look close.
This is going to be a tough, tough match
Can’t wait to see it!
2009 Dallas Cowboys: 11-5!!!
2009 New York Jets: not 11-5 :(, but PLAYOFFS!!!
2009-2010 Dallas Mavericks: 57-25, despite the recent molestation at the hands of the Lakers
Can the Jets get pressure with four rushers?
That’s the #1 question. The Gumby Squad is impossible to cover with six men: you just have to double up on too many studs. There was a time when blitzes were working against this team, but that was back when we had a bunch of newbies on the OL. The guys we got now are solid like a rock.
In particular, exotic blitzes are just raw elemental fail against the San Diego offense. Rivers can be had up the middle from time to time, but getting him from the edge usually means grabbing onto him just as he completes an improbable bomb from a crazy angle.
If you can’t get pressure with 4, you have to hope for an off-day from Rivers. Otherwise you’re going to get hosed.

JETS FANS ARE WAY TOO COCKY
WHICH JETS TEAM WILL SHOW UP THIS SUNDAY? THE JETS ARE WILDLY INCONSISTENT, THEY HAVE A GOOD GAME, BAD GAME (LOST 10-7 TO THE FALCONS IN NEW YORK!), BUT THEY DON’T HAVE A CONSISTENT PASSING GAME. WHAT HAPPENS IF THE JETS FALL BEHIND EARLY, IS MARK SANCHEZ GOING TO RESCUE THEM? NO, AND BECAUSE THE DEFICIT WILL PRACTICALLY ERASE THE JETS RUNNING GAME, I SAY THE JETS LOSE THIS GAME. JETS FANS THINK TOO MUCH OF THEIR TEAM, I MEAN YOU GUYS GOT TWO GIFT WINS TO END THE SEASON AND NOW YOU GUYS THINK YOU’RE A BUNCH OF GODS. WHAT HAPPENS IF REVIS GETS INJURED? WHERE DOES YOUR DEFENSE TURN THEN? KERRY RHODES?, PLEASE, GATES WILL HAVE A FIELD DAY AGAINST HIM. RIVERS WILL TORCH YOUR SECONDARY AND THE CHARGERS WILL WIN EASILY.
